September 25, 2019ARC reviews are talking about a hot love story between two people with an age gap but all I see is the story of a guy who falls in love with a child he raised and I feel sick!
And they do not want to give the information about their ages. Age gap, they say. Oh come on, tell me what the age gap is.
Well, let me tell you, she was 7 when he was 23. That's the age gap.
Because he takes her in when she is 7 and raises her, he acts like a father figure.
One review says, "It's a real "Daddy" story with great emotion". Another one says "It has delicious daddy kink in it" - yayyyy, how nice... Let me go puke some more!

Unconditional is the story of Maddie a young girl who lost both parents to a double murder/suicide. Left orphaned she is taken into care by Cal, a junior law enforcement officer who finds her at the scene of the crime.
Present day sees 10 years have passed and Maddie is approaching her 18th birthday. Having spent her formative years with Cal, her feelings begin to evolve, creating complications for them both. For many, this book would be classed as a taboo read as it involves a guardian and his ward falling for each other, not to mention a large age gap.
Although Cal tries to keep their relationship platonic, ultimately the heart wants, what the heart wants. As they very much love one another, they are prepared to deal with the ramifications once they decide to enter into a relationship.
‘Maybe all along I’d been falling in love with her. Not in a sexual way, but in a way that made me love her mind and her soul and her heart. The way that made me believe in soul mates’.
This is a very hot and explicit read, so be warned. I really enjoyed this although it takes a strangely twisted turn at the end...

‘I want to worship her…but I also want to defile her.’
Aiiiighttt, look, I know most of my GR friends loved this one, and for good reason: it's taboo, there's quite an age-gap, and the writing's really addictive.
That being said, this book didn't quite live up to the hype for me. The plot was overall a 3-star, but the unnecessary plot twist aka drama at around 90% made it even less enjoyable. Lastly, let me tell you what pissed me off the most... Maddie. This girl spent about 80% of the book crying. Sounds like exaggeration? I wish it was.

She turns in my arms, allowing me a look at her face that’s red and splotchy. Her eyes are glistening from her tears.

The tears are already in Maddie’s eyes, but they haven’t started to fall.

I squeeze my eyes shut to prevent the tears from falling when I feel one leaking out of the corner of my eye and slide into my hair.

My eyebrows shoot to my hairline and my eyes fill with more tears.
I limited myself to about 10-12 quotes, but there are around 20 more times that she cries. So basically, this was me trying to get past her crying parts:
Me: OMG, JUST STOP CRYING!! 🤬
Maddie: ‘My eyes well up with tears at the harshness of her tone.’ 🥺

I wanted to love this book so much...but no one told me the heroine was only 17 during this book...
Honestly, if the heroine were at least 20, I would be all on board. However, she's only 17 and we're dropped into the story when she's had a crush on Cal for 3 years and Cal is super attracted to her. Keep in mind he's raised her since her parents died when she was 7. I would have liked to see more of a connection between Cal and Maddie than the physical connection they had. They were literally obsessed with their physical relationship and I didn't believe they were completely and madly in love with each other. It definitely felt like insta-love and I didn't buy that Cal loved her beyond his desire to constantly sleep with her. Considering Cal is 33 and Maddie is 17, I wasn't that big of a fan. There's taboo and then there's TABOO and this just isn't what I like. Even if Maddie were actually 18 when they started their relationship, I wouldn't be able to get over how young she acted and how young Cal acted. She would act so bratty when any woman came around and I just did not see what Cal saw in her. He's a 33 year old chief of police and acted like a teenager too. I need some more maturity in my relationships in books.
The ending twist was interesting and helped move the plot along, but I just couldn't get behind the romance. I'll stick with QB's romances with older characters.

I AM NOT BEING JUDGEMENTAL BUT ONLY OPINIONATED!!!
See this was strait away creepy and disgusting. A person who has looked after a 7 YO till she turned 17 should not feel lustful about her as he has practically SEEN her growing which obviously means that he has seen her body changing as well.
Now if while during the change he start to have those feelings of which she knew nothing about then that's certainly not fair.
Also, the man till the time being could neither controlled his feelings nor could understand what's right or what's wrong.
I get it that this is a work of fiction but I couldn't read further chapter 1 as it was unethical. But still some people may like it for the very same reason (no offense to them).

Re-read-(7/12-7/14/22)
It’s a hard line to blur without coming off entirely skeeevy. I think the writer helped that along by having the timeline go back in forth, in essence giving you a taste of both relationships forming. Both that of a guardian/child and a man and a woman.
Lol honestly though, it’s a little skeevy and because I’m a sick bitch, it’s fucking hot. If it’s two consenting adults, I’m good and yeah she was a little under. It’s funny how everyone was up in arms over the Nyla K, but it’s always been a thing.
Anywho, the story of Maddie and Cal is pretty beautiful, as a cop he saved her. As a man he eventually fell in love with her. Super sweet really.
Until the sweetness was obliterated by pure filth. Holy smokes, these two know how to dick down. It could’ve been repetitive but it was so hot I didn’t care if it was.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. When it comes to steamy ass age gaps, QB Tyler is one of the best.
Not to mention all the character building, the ensuing drama. All in all, an extremely entertaining read.

TW:the awakening of your daddy issues.
This was one of the most delicious taboo reads of all times for me. 
I was on a cop kick, desperately searching for the best cop romance and I was GIFTED this masterpiece while on my search. Not only my badge bunny dreams came true, but it hit every single daddy spot known to men.
Q.B Tyler has such an unique voice, she gives me Penelope Douglas vibes and you know anyone who writes even remotely like Penelope has my heart in a chokehold immediately.
Her characters had awesome personalities, her writing flows so smoothly, her sm*t is not even a tiny bit cringy, the way she writes tension is amazing and the plot of this book was also pretty incredible. I was invested from beginning to end.
I will 100% be reading more Q.B Tyler for the rest of this year.

From all outward appearances this should have been a hit with me. I love taboo books. I love age gaps. I love hot sexy cops. However, I just could not get into this one. First, the flashbacks disturbed me. Not because I found the present situation disturbing, but I don't particularly want to be reminded about how the hero changed her sheets when she peed the bed as a child. Every time there was a flashback it threw me out of the story. Second, I liked none of these characters. The heroine came across like a desperate brat inappropriately throwing herself at the hero every chance she got. The hero himself seemed wishy-washy and weak. Don't even get me started on Aria. Every time she showed up in the book I wanted to throat punch her and tell her to mind her own f-cking business. So yea...I think it is best I shelve this one for now. (lol)

I read this book because I’ve been on an age-gap kick lately and someone recommended it to me on a Facebook group. I went into it kind of blind. I didn’t read the reviews ahead of time and all I knew was that this was an age-gap romance where h falls in love with her guardian.
I’ve read this theme before and I thought I was into it, but this book was just too much for me! The other book that I read, which was along the same lines as this was Little Dove by Layla Frost. I LOVED Little Dove, but there were a couple of big differences between that book and this one. 1) in Little Dove H didn’t raise h from the time she was a little girl and 2) although the taboo nature of that relationship was a part of the book, it wasn’t literally the entire plot of the book.
I just can’t wrap my mind around how it would be ok for a man who raised a girl from the time she was 7 years old, and played a DAILY father figure role in her life, to then look at that same girl and lust after her. This was justified by saying that Cal wasn’t Maddie’s father and that he never adopted her. Sure there was no blood between them, but the whole “I never adopted her, so it’s ok” justification didn’t make any sense. It would be like a common law partner cheating and then saying “but we never got married, so it’s ok”: the marriage certificate was a formality, for all intents and purposes, you were married! Same thing goes here: the adoption certificate was a formality, for all intents and purposes Cal was Maddie’s father!
The father/daughter relationship between Cal and Maddie was so in your face! Like, you couldn’t forget about it and pretend that it was ok and that they were just two consenting adults having steamy sex. The book would toggle back and forth in time between when Maddie was a little girl to present day. It would go from Maddie cuddling her bunny on Cal’s bed after a storm, to her rubbing up on Cal’s dick. It was fucked up! I actually stopped reading the italicized parts of the book, because they were trips down memory lane that I didn’t need to take! The whole thing was made even more cringeworthy because after they started hooking up, Maddie began calling Cal “Daddy” 🥴.
All that being said, I thought this was well written. Even though I was cringing most of the time, I couldn’t put it down. It was like a train wreck and I couldn’t look away!

I enjoyed the shifts from past and present which helped paint the picture of Cal and Maddie’s ever growing relationship! I enjoyed the relationships Maddie shared with her family, Cal’s family, and everyone around her! The secondary characters also brought life and joy into this book.
I loved ALL the tender moments between Cal and Maddie! You were able to see when the lines began to blur, its was beautifully explained! After everything that went on, I NEEDED their HEA.
“I haven’t explicitly told her I loved her since we’d crossed those lines, but I hope she knows. I hope she knows that with every kiss, every touch, every moment I risk my entire life just to hold her in my arms in every way I knew I shouldn’t, I hope she knows that I’d give up everything to love her forever.”
Their story is well written, emotionally charged, hauntingly beautiful, raw and real, and steamy af!

I want to give this book more than 5 Stars, because that’s what it deserves.
I’m one of those people who will pick up a book because other people have branded it “sick” “too taboo” or words to that effect. This is exactly how I found myself to be reading UNCONDITIONAL. You see, this book IS taboo, it pushes the boundaries and it has that shock factor. Just as well, though, that none of those things bother me. I’m able to separate myself from reality and look passed what might be wrong, and see the story for what it is. And it is fiction after all.
Cal and Maddie came out of nowhere and blew me away. I had never read a book by QB Tyler before, but oh, what a way to start. Her writing is raw, it’s emotional and it draws you in so much you don’t want to leave. I read this whole book in one go because I just couldn’t bear to put my kindle down, I HAD to find out how this was all going to end.
I know a lot of people hate reviews that say “you need to read it for yourself to see what it’s about” and that’s not quite what I’m going to say, but I do believe that you should go in blind and enjoy the story.

I’m one of those people who will pick up a book because other people have branded it “sick” “too taboo” or words to that effect. This is exactly how I found myself to be reading UNCONDITIONAL. You see, this book IS taboo, it pushes the boundaries and it has that shock factor. Just as well, though, that none of those things bother me. I’m able to separate myself from reality and look passed what might be wrong, and see the story for what it is. And it is fiction after all.
Cal and Maddie came out of nowhere and blew me away. I had never read a book by QB Tyler before, but oh, what a way to start. Her writing is raw, it’s emotional and it draws you in so much you don’t want to leave. I read this whole book in one go because I just couldn’t bear to put my kindle down, I HAD to find out how this was all going to end.
I know a lot of people hate reviews that say “you need to read it for yourself to see what it’s about” and that’s not quite what I’m going to say, but I do believe that you should go in blind and enjoy the story.

As far as forbidden romances go, this was quite good. I loved the tension in the beginning, the back and forth, the inner conflict and the slow progression. It was well written and I felt for the characters.
Something shifted in the middle though. It got dramatic, way too smutty and it dragged. I love smut, don't get me wrong!!! But somehow (and I never thought I'd say that!!) it got a bit much.
The chemistry between Cal and Maddie was great, Ms. Tyler writes FILTH very naturally and even beautifully, but the plot stopped developing at some point - and I found myself skimming. I must admit, I agreed with hero's friend and heroine's mother figure Aria about the distance the characters needed at some point. After Maddie turned 18, everything felt rushed and a bit undeveloped. Then the major plot twist (which I saw coming) happened in the last 10%...
So all in all, the pacing was unbalanced for me, some moments of super easy acceptance felt too convenient and heroine's obsession did not make a mature impression, IMO. She was still young, makes sense, yet if the author wanted to show me how epic and long lasting the love was, I wanted to see some more steadiness and maturity from the heroine. And from the hero too, frankly.
Still it was a good read, I did enjoy the writing and will be reading more by the author.

After so many mixed reviews, I decided to judge myself, and I always love a good age gap, taboo romance. So I dove right in with an open mind and read a great story.
Unconditional is the story of Maddie, who lost her parents to a murder/ suicide at seven years of age. Cal, the police officer on duty, finds her in the closet, and Maddie instantly attached to Cal.
Present-day, Ten years later, Cal is Maddie's legal guardian; Maddie is now seventeen and close to her eighteenth birthday. Cal is thirty-three. Her feeling has evolved towards Cal. Cal tries to keep Maddie at a safe distance and fights his feelings towards Maddie. But once he stops fighting, what a beautiful love story.

Plot:
Cal is a police officer who saves Madeline when she was 7 while she was hiding in her house.
Madeline's father killed her mother and then himself later and she didn't have anywhere to go except the system where she would be put in a stranger's family till she was 18.
Cal and Madeline both find themselves being attracted and very much in love with each other then.
As a book around taboo topics and romance with an older man and all that shit this was decent but somewhere down the line i had a lot of problems with this.
1) i love me a good age gap but something about Madeline being 17 and Cal being 30+ something just didn't sit right with me. I knowwwww it was said that it would be her 18th bday in like a month or two or whatever but that still bugged me because i felt like the lust part of it wasnt done right. Because they were introduced and next thing we know they were like "my dick is so hard for her" and "I'm so wet for him".
2) Cal knew her since she was 7. And i know that he didn't feel that lust for Madeline when she was very young but he admitted to have lusted on her when he was 15-16 when he himself was a full grown man.
3) Madeline was so annoying and for what really?
Like literally ugh.
She literally straddled him up and grinded down on him because she knew somewhere in her heart that he lusted on her so miss ma'am continued to grind up on his dick.

Unconditional by Author Q. B. Tyler is a standalone, taboo novel with an age gap.

Well, heck. When I first begin reading a novel, I generally enter being a bit guarded. I want to get a feel for the writing and characters before investing time I can never get back. BUT, there are some books that grab me and make me jump in lust first, throwing all caution to the wind. Unconditional was in this latter category of novels. It didn’t take me too many pages to realize that this was the type of taboo that makes me salivate, makes me want to run around the room and fist pump the air. It makes me want to scream, “YESSSSSS!”, and then promptly sit to get down to “the good stuff”.
“I won’t tell anyone. Our secret.”
This story was DEFINITELY of taboo subject matter. Author Q. B. Tyler did not skim over the off limits nature of Unconditional, but instead approached it with thoughts from numerous characters on the arguments for and against Maddie and Cal’s liaison. In doing this, she exposed the reality of challenges that might be faced, but illuminated the aspect that mattered most, love. What lead up to the forbidden was so sweet and caring that there was no way you could not make Maddie and Cal crash together in your mind. I loved the different stages they were at in their lives that contributed to the seemingly impossible shift from past to present to questionable future. I also loved the initial thread that wove them together, creating a bond that was one to be cherished.
“Trust me, sweetheart, the things I’m about to do to you are not things an eighteen year old boy can do.”
Past that tenderness was amazing heat and some never-ending sizzle. Cal and Maddie had fiery chemistry that was SO incredibly hot and tantalizing. Every descriptive act made the scorch turn into a blazing inferno. There were also numerous moments that made me aroused and ready to scream with delight.
“I hope she knows with every kiss, every touch, every moment I risk my entire life just to hold her in my arms in a way I knew I shouldn’t, I hope she knows that I’d give up everything to love her forever.”
I turned the last page of Unconditional with a HUGE smile on my face, knowing the naughty, needy taboo reader in me was satisfied, again and again, and that the forbidden became a reality.

4 "It May Be Ick, But I Can't Look Away" Stars!!!

So at the tender age of 7 years old, our heroine, Madeline/Maddie, was rescued by the heroic and dashing 23-year old officer, Cal, after her parents died in a domestic homicide-suicide situation. From the moment he found her hiding in her closet, she clung to this man as though her life depended on it and would trust no one else. Having no surviving relatives, the state felt that it would be in the best interest of the child to keep her with someone she felt comfortable with, thus allowing her to live with this single, young man, of whom she shares no blood relation and bonded so quickly with.
I'm not sure in what alternate reality this would ever actually be deemed legally or ethically appropriate, but HEY! I read to escape reality, not abide by the rules of it! So I certainly can look beyond social norms in a fictional setting.
So I'm not going to get my panties in a twist over that aspect. of this story.
The story continues and really starts off when Maddie is 17 (soon to be turning 18) and Cal is 33. It would appear that virginal Maddie is starting to have a sexual awakening and being in the constant presence of a young, caring man that has the body of a god is really starting to affect the way she feels about him. Cal, too, has taken note that Maddie has grown into a beautiful [very] young woman and tries to limit the kind of interactions they share these days. Before long, though, Maddie, who is convinced that she absolutely loves Cal and will never feel that way for another man, decides that she wants their relationship to change and starts to sexually come on to Cal. He tries to resist, but soon discovers his feelings have also shifted from being a nurturing guardian, to a lusting male who wants to actively pursue a romantic relationship with Maddie. They begin this secret affair and try their hardest not to do the actual deed before Maddie turns 18, but skirting around it proves too tempting. And when another teenage boy shows interest in Maddie, Cal's will caves and he ends up taking her virginity approximately a week before her 18th birthday. There's one problem. Unbeknownst to the couple, Cal's older brother, Henry, stops by the house and hears their first tryst in all it's glory and confronts Cal when he comes downstairs to investigate the noises he hears once they're done.
I really liked that the story did at least explore the whole aspect of how people would realistically react to the change in their relationship. I mean, you know there would be a lot of people looking at Cal as if he was a groomer that had prepared Maddie to one day fill these kinds of needs for him. And even though, there's absolutely NOTHING in the story that would allude to this being the actual case, you know there would be people ready to persecute him all the same.
Now, that's not to say that I think the author portrayed all these actions realistically, but I'm happy that at least it was addressed.
There is one thing that I have to come clean with and admit that I did NOT like about this story. The author chose to continuously give flashbacks of memories between Cal and Maddie as a CHILD throughout the book. I thought that was a very poor choice on her part. I mean, if you're trying to get a reader to accept this outrageous relationship that has developed between a man and a "woman" that he raised since she was 7 years old, you don't exactly want to highlight the moments between them when she was a child and he was a man as "bonding experiences"!
Ironically enough, she didn't really show them talking and interacting that much as "adults" to develop a different kind of relationship either. It was more so a mutual understanding of, "I know I deeply care about you and now I realize I find you really hot and sexually attractive, so let's start banging and be a couple instead" kind of thing.
Which brings me to my next thing....the steam in this book was off the charts! I mean, if I were rating on that factor, it would certainly be a 5 star read, which I think kinda tricked my brain into rooting for an otherwise very bizarre and off putting relationship.
Lastly, I want to say that the little added bit of drama at the end was very much appreciated and not really expected. It added a little edge to the story and helped to serve the purpose in showing all the characters within it just how much Cal really did love and care about Maddie. Oh and that epilogue! It was so VERY satisfying, which has not really been my experience with epilogues here lately, so I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Final Thoughts:
This feels like a story I shouldn't have enjoyed as much as I did, but QB Tyler did such an incredible job in writing it, you couldn't help be captivated by it despite it's very taboo origins. Would highly recommend to those who can keep an open mind when reading fiction. Your taste in reading material does not have to be a direct representation of your moral ethics and character-- and I think we'd all be doing a little better to understand and accept that.

It was more so a mutual understanding of, "I know I deeply care about you and now I realize I find you really hot and sexually attractive, so let's start banging and be a couple instead" kind of thing.
Which brings me to my next thing....the steam in this book was off the charts! I mean, if I were rating on that factor, it would certainly be a 5 star read, which I think kinda tricked my brain into rooting for an otherwise very bizarre and off putting relationship.
Lastly, I want to say that the little added bit of drama at the end was very much appreciated and not really expected. It added a little edge to the story and helped to serve the purpose in showing all the characters within it just how much Cal really did love and care about Maddie. Oh and that epilogue! It was so VERY satisfying, which has not really been my experience with epilogues here lately, so I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Final Thoughts:
This feels like a story I shouldn't have enjoyed as much as I did, but QB Tyler did such an incredible job in writing it, you couldn't help be captivated by it despite it's very taboo origins. Would highly recommend to those who can keep an open mind when reading fiction. Your taste in reading material does not have to be a direct representation of your moral ethics and character-- and I think we'd all be doing a little better to understand and accept that.

Aight, I did like this book more than love unexpected, but it’s still taboo & not everyone’s gonna like it. I liked the writing and also did not expect the plot twist. Talk ab whiplash☠️☠️ I really didn’t see it coming bc the rest of the book was very… expected lmaoo

Nothing like a good taboo to help you out a brain fog

For most of the book, the plot is just them navigating their changing relationship from guardian/ward to lovers.
However, the hero being the police chief, there were a number red herrings which were hinting at a possible kidnapping (which I've come to dislike lately). However, while it did happen, the way it went down was so surprising I was pleased! It's a tiny twist, but I still liked it because it's not too contrived and made sense.

This is definitely more erotica than romance, but there was a strong effort to developed the feelings well. The steam was off the charts, but there were several cut in the middle or fade to black and that was kind of annoying. Instead of cutting them, they could've just not been steamy scenes and made them more emotional ones.
However, I still don't think that means this would be for everyone, but for those that like the tropes

Wow! What a really fantastic read! The was my first story by QB Taylor and it definitely won't be my last. The storyline was great and honestly one of the best taboo stories I've read. Tons of twists and turns and the perfect level of angst and daddy kink. The character development was fantastic. You get invested in them and want them to succeed. The chemistry between the two of them was off the chain! All the sneaking and hiding in the beginning of the relationship just made it that much hotter! Highly recommend

I expected better
QB Tyler is a great writer, and I'm a fan of the taboo romance subgenre, but this book just wasn't it for me.

I wish that Maddie had been older. Like early twenties. Her being seventeen just didn't sit right with me.
I've read the Off Balance series (new version) where the FMC is sixteen in Georgia (Georgia's age of consent is 16). But reading about a 17 year-old in Oregon, it just wasn't right.
I would have liked it a lot more if Maddie was 20-22 and visiting from university when Cal and her did stuff. Something where they have time apart and it doesn't feel eerily adjacent to grooming.

this book doesn't even deserve a one star, it deserves a zero. i was really a clown thinking this was going to be so emotional and good and possibly a five. this was so very far from a five star read and I should have known that the moment this book opened up with the love interest (who is basically like a father to her) had a hard on when he saw her and she was 17 and he's like, idk, 16 years older than her? but I kept going because this book had glowing reviews and I wanted to see why. that was a fat mistake. one, these two thought it was so impossible to wait like 2 months until she was 18 to do anything sexual, and two, the plot was just absolutely ridiculous. I went into this knowing it was a taboo book, but could the author not have waited until the girl was officially of age? this was so stupid and I regret.

"Unconditional" was taboo, smexy and full of angst! This memorable couple, Cal and Maddie's story so raw but so beautifully written. This is my second time reading this author but I need another book by this author ASAP!
