Every road is the wrong road when you’re driving 291

This was not the first-time that rookie cop Michael Chambers had found himself stuck in this broken-down police vehicle while the rain bucketed down outside.

In fact, this kind of ‘bad luck’ had happened almost every time he’d been assigned car 291. Usually, he’d get a flat, or the locks would jam or the damned onboard computer would freeze.

291, though, had a bloody and tragic history which might explain why this piece of metallic crap seemed so intent on driving him crazy—excuse the pun.

At first, he jokingly called it the demon car, but now he realized he may not be far off the truth. Something lurked inside this car and whatever it was, it meant him harm.

He was beginning to seriously believe that if he didn’t fight back soon, this car might be the death of him. And he wasn’t about to let that happen.

From international bestselling suspense author Susan May, comes a story of possession, desperation, and one man’s battle against an unknown enemy.

I was four when I decided I would be a writer, packed a bag, and marched down the road looking for a school. But for forty-six years, I suffered from life-gets-in-the-way-osis. Setting a goal to write just one page a day cured me in 2010. This discipline grew into an addictive habit that has since borne several novels, and dozens of short stories and novellas--many of which are published award-winners in Australia, the US and the UK.

My childhood reading diet consisted of Edgar Allen Poe, O'Henry, and Alfred Hitchcock Presents, plus horror comics like Tales From the Crypt. Anything out of this world like The Twilight Zone and Outer Limits had me glued to the television.

Inspired by these classics, I attempt to pen tales that are simply about the story and the characters and not about fancy words or beautiful descriptions. At the end of my stories I hope, wonderful reader, that you will feel you've enjoyed a journey into the fantastic with a neat twist at the end.

Every day I pinch myself that I am able to do what I love and be in control of every facet of it. And I can wear my track suit pants and slippers while doing it. Bliss.

Most days I'm just an average mother and wife living in Perth, Western Australia, but this darn imagination of mine keeps constantly venturing into the crevices of dark worlds, whether I want to go there or not.

Police Patrol car 291 is just like any car other isn’t it? Well no, not exactly - for one thing it has a plaque dedicated to a former serving officer, who was violently killed on duty whilst assigned to car 291, and this may have some bearing on what is about to happen to its newest driver.

Rookie cop Michael Chambers seems to be assigned car 291 every time he’s on duty, and the darn heap of junk is nothing but trouble. It often has a flat tyre, or the locks jam, and quite often the onboard computer seems to have a mind all of its own! Eventually he becomes convinced that this car might be haunted, and not only that, but he believes it means to harm him.

Michael decides to take matters into his own hands, and devises a plan that will put an end to this demon car’s mission, but things go very wrong for Michael when he wages war on the unknown!

As usual, author Susan May ratchets up the tension and suspense, leading to a terrifying climax that leaves you gasping for breath. If you haven’t read any of Susan’s books then you’re missing out!

* Thanks to Susan May for inviting me to be one of her early readers. I have given an honest unbiased review in exchange *

Michael Chambers thinks his car is posessed and attributes every kind of mishap to the power of the car. It was the former car of Frank Chester who died in action being attacked by a mysterious assailant. We hear on many pages that Michael doesn't like him being into the police service and what other professions he already had. You also find some references to popular songs (Ghostbusters) or Christine by Stephen King. The book wasn't badly written (far from it) but the insight into a character like Michael over so many pages was a bit tedious. Also the Frank Chester scene was extremely long winded and repetetive. The denouement seemed lame to me after that reading distance. I was looking forward to read about a horror car but this novella rather is a psychogramme of the main characters than real horror on a posessed car. If you really want to be swept away by a book based on a horror car take Stephen King's Christine. This is the right stuff!

This was a gripping, fascinating novella.
Rookie Michael Chambers was assigned a patrolling car, 291, with a tragedy linked to it. It seems that every time he drives it, something happens. The car seems intent on sabotaging him somehow. The thought of it being hunted crossed his mind, and then he decided to take matters on his own hands.
This "fight" between man and car was fascinating to follow, and i tried to imagine every plausible, and not so very plausible, explanation; but when i get to the final twist i just burst out laughing, although i admit it was not the most logical reaction to it, but because that was the one thing i didn't see coming. I really thought i had the story figured out but i am so glad i didn't, i love being surprised by unexpected twists.

Thank you Susan May for an advanced copy in exchange of an honest review.

Fascinating and eerie. A haunted car and a rookie cop. Very well written. However, I didn't connect with the main character at all. I didn't like him and by the end of this short story, I didn't care what happened to him. Nice twist at the end though. If you like dark and strange, you will probably enjoy this book.

I'm such a huge fan of this author, and this novella did not disappoint. Rookie cop Michael Chambers is not happy with his lot in life. It doesn't help that he keeps getting assigned car 291. Between malfunctioning equipment and the car's tragic history, he begins to feel it is out to get him. I enjoyed this from start to finish, and that ending was amazing. I highly recommend if you are looking for a quick read that will get you your spooky fix.

291 is a twisted tale in more ways than one with the biggest twist saved for the very end.

When I started reading this, I was immediately reminded of the Hulu Original "The Rookie," starring Nathan Fillion since 291's protagonist is also an older than average rookie cop. That train of thought disappeared and was replaced by thoughts of CHRISTINE and FROM A BUICK 8. I went back and forth between a cop having a series of bad days, and, maybe, that same cop experiencing the supernatural. It is hard to tell until you get to that last page.

291 is a fast read that will take you down roads you may not want to explore. You will go along for the ride just to find out what is really happening.

This is a fast-paced novella by horror/thriller author, Susan May. I thank her for the e-ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

I knew very little about this story and I think that's why I enjoyed it so much. I had no idea what was going to happen! The title, 291, is the number on a police cruiser and the car is the "protagonist" along with the rookie police officer, Michael, who is usually assigned to it. Things are always going wrong with cruiser 291 and Michael starts to think it's haunted because a former officer who was assigned to it died a horrible death. As the problems mount, Michael figures out a way to get rid of it and save face with his co-workers and supervisors.

Susan May just gets better and better. She grabbed me at the beginning and held me to the brilliant twist at the end. I never saw that coming! Because my husband is a retired police officer, I asked him questions regarding matters in the plot and he assured me that scenarios depicted by Ms. May were right on. She either had a very knowledgeable consultant or did a lot of research to display scenes so accurately. Thanks to a terrific plot, I can't stop thinking about it.

Boy do I love this author. Her stories are creepy in the best of ways and always leave me feeling like I have entered an altered universe where the unnatural takes over. This time we get a car with a history, a questionable one at best. A haunted car?? Where does she come up with this stuff. It's a great read especially with the twist at the end as this slacker gets his. . . well you'll see. It's a great story and yes it's done well by this author who likes to trip us up.

It would make it easier for me to rate this book if there were a separate category for Novella Length Books. This is probably the best Novella-length story I've read and, since I suspect any prospecting reader will know this is a Novella, it's going to get the top five-star rating from me. I believe this is the first Novella I've ever given five stars to. The fact that it's written by an author who writes like my favorite author, Stephen King, has everything to do with this rating.
From having read most of Susan May's works, I know it is her desire, to write like her favorite author, also Stephen King, and this book is about as close as you can get. There is a subtle difference between them in this book but, to reveal it would give too much away. If you're old enough, or a good enough fan of King's, you will recall "Christine". She was a 1958 Plymouth Fury that was possessed by an evil spirit. Michael, the main character in "291", a rookie policeman, remembers her and believes his Patrol Vehicle, number 291, is also possessed. Interestingly, it is a Memorial Vehicle honoring a murdered Police Officer assigned to car 291 on the shift he was working when savagely killed.
Michael has developed a plan he believes will free him from being the object of torment by this demon car. The car, or rather the demons influencing it, may have a surprise for him. This story has one of the best endings I've ever read. You won't see this coming; neither did Michael.

Let's go for a ride.

Susan May continues her long winning streak as one of the best writers of thriller/horror fiction in the 21st century.
Her latest, "291" will not disappoint.
291 is the number of a police patrol car and is always (it seems) assigned to rookie cop Michael Chambers. Weird things begin to happen whenever Chambers climbs into 291. Silly, stupid, frustrating things that anyone who has driven/owned a car has certainly experienced.
Let's face it we LOVE our cars: we name them, caress them, beg them for warmth on a frigid cold morning, beg them for relief on a scorching hot afternoon, swear at them when they don't start the first time we crank the engine.. Our culture is our car. No matter how old you are, like your "first time" you NEVER forget your first car. Go ahead. That memory is clear as glass isn't it?
Michael is old for a rookie cop. Finally pleasing his distant father, Chambers joins the force at 35 and is given 291 as his ride.
Frustrating, irritating things happen when Michael drives 291. Tires need repair, computer system goes haywire, all the little gremlins dance about in our new cars with the latest technology.
Micheal hears stories about 291. Not happy stories. The kind that make the hairs on your neck stand up.
One of his officers takes to calling the car "Christine" after the Stephen King brilliant novel.
But it isn't. It is so much more.
No spoilers here, in fact I won't even make you sit in the back where they push the perps. Sit up front. Next to me. Let's go cruising. Have I got a story for you.

Rookie cop Michael Chambers finds himself at war with his police vehicle. Every time Chambers is given car 291 for his shift, something goes wrong; engine trouble, flat tyres, electronic issues. He can almost swear that he can feel the presence of something or someone, after all the car was the vehicle of a cop who was killed on duty.

As a horror novella, the first half of it works but I was a little disappointed with the ending. I can see what the author was going for, but it didn't quite work for me. It was good enough though that I will try some of the author's other works.

What a fantastic, suspenseful story, reminiscent of Stephen King's "Christine" or Joe Hill's "NOS482". The tension builds and builds until the climatic ending, with a twist that will leave you thinking long after you finish this one. Susan May has once again crafted an amazing, twisty thriller that will leave you wanting more!

I love this author. I have been impressed with everything she has written so far, and this novella was no exception. I am not easily surprised when it comes to the endings in books, but the twist in the end of this one was truly fantastic and had me chuckling to myself reading it. Maybe that makes me sick and twisted..................

Wow! This story has more twists and turns than a road laid out by a black snake! 291 grabbed me and didn't let go until the final page. My mind was absolutely blown by the shocking conclusion. It is an excellent lesson on human behavior and consequences of our actions, as well. The subplot was just as good as the main storyline. I highly recommend it and know you will enjoy it.

If you are a Stephen King fan and are looking for a new author who writes similar stories, check out Susan May. Her books and stories are very reminiscent of Mr. King's works and are just as enjoyable!

Michael Chambers is a Rookie Cop at the ripe "old" age of 42. He comes from a long line of cops but fought against following in his father's footsteps. Instead, he has been working at security and other mind-numbing jobs.

As a Rookie, he is assigned to patrol areas that see a minimum of action and crime. Michael suspects that this is because of his age. But, the biggest problem he has with his job is that he keeps being assigned to drive vehicle #291. Said vehicle comes with a lot of mechanical problems and Michael begins to suspect that it might be haunted ala "Christine".

As the story progresses, we learn that #291 is a Memorial vehicle, dedicated to the memory of Frank Chester, who died in the line of duty while using this car. The detail in the story of Frank was wonderful and the author does a great job making the reader feel every emotion.

After Chambers becomes convinced that the car is haunted (or just out to get him personally), he decides to take matters into his own hands. Once again, the author does an amazing job describing Chambers' emotions and feelings as he puts his plan into action. And the ending? What an unexpected twist! I don't dare say more because each reader needs to experience this story with a fresh viewpoint.

Ms. May's books are wonderfully entertaining, well-written, and have great character development. Just be sure that you have plenty of time to start what you finish because you won't dare put this story down until you reach the end!

I found this novel to be amusing & sinister at the same time. Michael Chambers was a rookie cop at the age of 35. Having had many jobs & finding them ultimately boring, he became a cop like his father & brother. I have to say, I did not like Michael one bit. I thought he was a horrible person. He had constant critical thoughts for everyone in his life. His view of life was cynical and pessimistic. I felt like, underneath all that pessimism, he was an arrogant jerk. As I read this novella, I was thinking to myself about Michael: “You deserve all your troubles in your life & with car 291.” Thus, I had no sympathy for his mishaps.
Even though Michael was not a sympathetic character, I greatly enjoyed this story. I’ve read a few of Susan May’s novels, & feel she is a first rate author. Her writing is descriptive & beckons the reader to continue on till the conclusion. All in all, this was a first rate novella. It’s not often I read a novella that contains full character development & an intricate plot (due to word count constraints).
This story was a fun read!
I was given an ARC of this novella with my agreement to post an honest review.

This was an amazing book. Susan May has captured the heart of a Christine era type read and made it all it's own.

Rookie cop Michael Chambers has been stuck in car 2-9-1. IF it was going to go wrong in any car it went wrong in this car. It was going wrong so often and poor rookie cop Michael started to think that the car was possessed by a demon. He didn't know what to do about it. It got so bad he started losing weight and could not sleep and just didn't know what to do. He finally came up with a plan. It was a crazy plan but it was the only thing he could think of to get away from the car and the demon that was in the car.

If you want to know what happens and I think you do, then you really should read this book. It is a rather quick read and it is well worth it. Nothing but the best in this book. I can not wait to read more from this amazing author. So far I am loving her writing style. So Stephen King-like yet all her own in the end.

Rookie cop Michael Chambers started his career at a older age than other cops did. He thinks thats why they all sneak looks at him but nobody talks to him. He is given a car to drive that always seems to have problems. Flat tires, doors that don't unlock, windows don't work, onboard computer freezes up are just some of the things that happen. His complaints are ignored. He starts comparing the car to Stephen King's Christine. He's sure the car is out to get him. Hop in and ride along with Michael. You will enjoy Susan's descriptive writing. You will turn the pages as fast as you can and you won't put it down until you finish it. Great characters, exciting plot with a twist.
I voluntarily received a copy of this book and I''m voluntarily posting a review. My opinion is entirely my own.

Susan May has given us terror and humour and come up with a winner!

I loved this book by Susan May! Imaginative yet cohesive, but what a surprise is in store. In some ways this is a storyline of a young man who doesn't really seem to care too much about his future. With a nod to Stephen King's "Christine", this brings a turnaround, is he in a nightmare? The squad car assigned to him certainly seems nightmarish, who is the operator of the car? Or maybe what? How will he ever get a chance to prove himself? So many questions, so much frustration, why does he keep getting assigned to the same car? Can he get the better of this outrageous haunt or is there no haunt at all? Sometimes when we get frustrated, the answer is not what we expect.

... Still, perhaps the car is teaching him.

291
By Susan May
I have read everything that Susan May has written and have thoroughly enjoyed each book. Her newest, 291, did not live up to my expectations of her writing.
291 is about a “haunted” car and the rookie cop who is assigned it each time he works. While I enjoyed the story, I did not enjoy it as much as previous stories of hers. I felt she took too long to get to the end. Susan always keeps the reader in suspense, but this story bogged down too often on a storyline that I felt was not necessary to keep the suspense moving along.
Even with my negative thoughts on 291 I still highly recommend readers pick up any of Susan May’s novels. You will never be disappointed.

A scary car…with a twist!
What would you do if you weren’t very happy in your new job, and on top of that, the one piece of equipment that you had to use constantly apparently HATED you? Not just any job, but one you had to work hard for, invest of yourself and your time to get, and had a lot of personal identity and self-worth tied into, so you felt like you couldn’t just walk away… Susan May has given us a main character that we may not exactly like, but as time goes, we can definitely feel for. And..I didn’t expect to laugh, but I did.
This is a quick story that keeps you listening.
Great narration!

Not really a bad little novella, but it did have a very predictable ending. It also seemed a tad long-winded and the characters a tad dim-witted. The suspense didn't work for me because I don't have a whole lotta patience for people that are lazy and trying to game the system, such as the main character, so I couldn't relate or empathize with him. If I were grading high school papers this one would have gotten an 'A'. The editing is really good. But we're not in school anymore.
