The plot and the characters are very good, but the writing is not. There are lots of repetitions and other unnecessary comments, as well as logical errors. So it's readable, but would have been much better with some tidying up.

The intense subject matter of this book is difficult to read . Sexual abuse of children is horrific with many of them being murdered . The many twist and turns in the plot gives the reader the reason to continue on to a end even though the ending doesn't complete the plot . Read on to the next book in the series .

The subject matter of this book is uncomfortable. There is sexual abuse and incest, so this may not be the book for everyone. I ran across this as a free download, but it is #4 in a series, so there is mention of something major that happened to the two main characters. Still, it can be read without having read those. Even though the writing wasn’t as good as it could be, there were enough twists to keep me engaged. Unfortunately, this is the first book of a trilogy, so much was left unresolved.

Did I enjoy this book? The content of a murderous pedophile ring... not so much. Very hard stuff to think about and picture. However, the storytelling really captured the horror of the act as the victims and all those it affects. I hope that somehow it gets into the hands of actual pedophiles or sex abusers/traffickers and maybe they'll realize what they are contributing to. The pace of action was well-written as well as each chapter having an unusual unravelling with the two storylines, one in present, one leading up to, so we know how the story goes, the A and Z part, but as reading uncover the in-between. I appreciated that Rachel was a victim, but not a helpless victim. She crossed over to Survivor instead of staying in a pitiful state and using it as an excuse. Instead, doing whatever it took to care for her daughter. Despite the very difficult subject and scenes, this was a very good book. I'll go even farther to say an important story to be told. Not advocating what Rachel wound up doing...but no one could blame her.

I received The Girl Who Ran Away from NetGalley and the publisher and this is my fair and honest review.

This is my first book by this author. Having said tht in the beginning I found the book very hard to follow along with until I figured out that it was actually going back and forward in time and that the young girl in the story was actually the woman that was later missing in the storyline. After I got to the point I realized what was actually going on then I could better follow along with the storyline. There were errors in the book, which could have been improved on. Sadly the storyline is probably happening many places in the world now days that is how prevelant sex trafficing has become, and so many sick people involved in it. This book could cuse flashbacks for those that have been subjected to trauma in their past.

Still reading - might update review when done, however not even halfway through and already tired of one character being referred to as "strange, odd, shifty, guilty looking" because he is suspected to had ASD. The author is constantly directly linking the adjectives to ASD. And not only has the author mentioned the ASD about 6 times already (overkill), they also keep using the term "Asperger's", which is no longer an official diagnosis since 2013 and has an incredibly ableist past, considering Dr. Asperger was a Nazi doctor who used his knowledge to support the Nazi ideas of "culling" humans.... I'd recommend for the author to have more in depth knowledge of neurodivergency, to stop leaning so heavily into stereotypes and to introduce new information about the character instead of making his suspected ASD a focus point every 20 pages or so.

I thought the book was intense and kept one guessing to a degree there were repetitive words to many times about being caught and Rachel daughter Sadie going into foster homes ,puts a bad spin on foster homes as being so horrific when there are good people trying to help..It is a bit too simple and one can easily guess what book to will end like..simply because Rachel's character plays out like a caring loving person and she would not want either men she cares so much for to be convicted of a crime she committed,so eventually her conscience will have her reach out and there will b a happy ending of ??? So to find out author wants you to purchase second book..I can't say I did not enjoy reading but I know what the end will be 👍.

This was the first book I read in Susan Lund’s set of trilogies of crime thrillers. I liked it but is was rather dark and upsetting, as it concerned child sexual exploitation and abuse. I found myself trying to put the clues together to see with whom the responsibility laid ... with the disappearance of a woman and child or the murder of two perverse men. It kept me focused and reading to the end. Now, I want to know more ... to read the next two books!

While Tess McClintock finishes writing her articles about a child murderer for the Seattle Sentinel, the girlfriend and daughter of a colleague photographer and friend go missing. When the bodies of two men turn up on property owned by the family, Tess's friend becomes the prime suspect. The ending is quite surprising!

The book was pretty good. Normally, I'd give it a 3 or 4 star rating. But I'm annoyed and frustrated. Annoyed, because it says it's #1 in a series. Uhh, at least 10% of the book referenced some other case. As far as I can tell, the back story of the other case had no serious impact on the current book. A few references might make sense, but not the number actually included. And frustrated because it's really Part 1 of the book. It's not a true stand alone.

A good detective but I'm quite split with this one... The story is very disturbing and a tad too raw for my liking sometimes. Although I wouldn't blame this on the author. I just think that the book is definitely not for faint hearted or people with an emotional trauma of any kind. All the disturbances aside, I think the author managed to balance the calm mystery and gripping suspense at a perfect level.

Awesome read

Very intriguing-made me keep going back and forth to continue reading. Hard to put down - I guessed this would be continued - however with that said; I would be interested in obtaining the next sequel. The story has a lot of interest with twist and turns intriguing story with obvious ending. Still hard to put down.
I enjoyed first part with more to come to see the conclusion. 😊

I really enjoyed this mystery which is examined from two angles - the ex-FBI agent, now DA Investigator Michael and his partner, crime reporter Tess. While she is required to tell Michael all that she uncovers, it is debatable whether he would be telling her everything from his side.

It does annoy me when books flip between time lines without any "heading" so that you know that you've moved 10 years into the past.

It was a complicated story.

Good Read

The book was predictable, and the writing was less than sophisticated. The characters were flat. There was no one I want to know better. I am not intrigued enough to buy the second book of the trilogy. Other than the above, the author's other writing mechanics were good. There was very little vulgar language, but the overt sexual acts were perverted.

Thank you, Ms. Lund, for the read.

It is easy to read and hard to put down. This is the first book of Susan Lund's A McClintock-Carter Crime Thriller, not realising that it is the 4th book (first of a trilogy). After finishing this book, I enjoyed it very much and decided to read the first 3 books. I am now three quarter of the second book.

Good Story Line

The Girl Who Ran Away is interesting in the story matter. It has several clerical errors and the writer contradicts herself a lot. For instance " When he looked down on her she saw the broken tooth she hated". "The victim had perfect teeth, never having had dental work." There were many other instances. As I said "the story line 's good".

No ending

Two issues. One, the book has no ending. You must buy the next book. Two, if I had wanted to read the book before this one, I could not. All during this book they told everything about the prior issue. So, when one already knows everything that happens in that one, including who the culprit was, no need to read it. I will not read anything else from this author.

Ok story, but....

The story was ok, but a lot of references to events in the previous book proved distracting. Also, the switches in time periods was a bit discerning. I took a long time to get into the story. I would have preferred the story told in a clean crisp manor because the story is good.

3.5 stars, not sure I'll continue with the series. It seemed really choppy and took me a while to realize it was jumping back and forth in the timeline. I enjoy nonlinear timelines often but it's just nice to know that's the format or at least be clued in rather than feeling so confused several chapters in.

This book made me sad. Sad to think that even though it's fiction, there are people out there in our world who do these things. And sad for the innocent children who are abused and killed because of someones sick, perverted needs. There has to be better ways to protect the kids from these predators.

More a slow jog

This story kept me intrigued, turning the pages to find out what would happen to the runaway(sorry but I've forgotten her name), but you have to buy book two to find out. People are facing life threatening changes, murder, abduction etc, but the story carries on to another novel. Not sure that's fair & ultimately do I care enough to buy the second book?

What a story with reality based situations.

This was amazing to read. Many true stories are written by survivors. It's upsetting at times but the changes and getting away gives hope for the characters future. Well written and some lovely characters teach love and trust to one that never knew normalcy.

The girls who ran

Great reading. But an awful thing for a child or children to go through. Going to start reading the next book. I recommend these books. They will keep you reading to the very end.

Harsh reality of the world

Rachel was abused, used in porn movies and then pregnant by her own father. She ran away and started a new life. The past caught up to her and it was time to run again.
The author draws you in and won’t let go. Time to read book 2.

Fabulous

The book started very slow. I almost gave up on it. After reading another chapter, I became totally hooked. The rest of the story moved along at a good pace. The characters are well drawn. The plot is well written.

This book really needed a reviewer and editor. Felt like a debut, wasn't bad but too many repetitions between paragraphs made it feel unfinished. Like the three separate paragraphs who described in practically the same way Mickey's physique, beer gut and belt buckle.

An abandoned car and two naked dead bodies. A missing woman and her child. Can they be connected? Lund takes the reader along for a detailed, sometimes frustrating ride into darkness, friendship and how far someone will go to protect what and who they love.
