This title called out to me from the bookshelf. A laughing heart is such a beautiful idea.

My Heart Is Laughing is a tale of friendship, change, and growing up. A very realistic story with teasing, jealousy, joy, and sadness between kids at school.

Dani is sad and upset when her best friend moves away. Hurt feelings and miscommunications only add to her sadness and troubles. Children ignoring each other, pinching, and pouting are details kids will relate to for sure, but I do feel like some other issues needed to be discussed as well. For one, the apology—in my opinion—needed to be said. And the running off from school, locking the door, and sneaking around needed to be pointed out and discussed between parent, teacher and child as behavior not to do.

Friendship was captured on the pages with warm, expressive illustrations and words. But for me, a few more things needed to be said out loud. Perhaps this story will start a discussion at home with kids about dealing with change and missing someone you love though.

Ja na tom mojom dieťati zbankrotujem. Večer jej dám knižku a ona mi ju ju za dve hodiny donesie prečítanú?! Však ešte ani do školy nechodí, ledva oslávila 6 rokov... A že chce nejakú novú...
(nebudem ju ťahať k tým neprečítaným, radšej pôjdeme do knižnice :))

Dunne-kirjojen avulla on helppo käsitellä erilaisia tunnetaitoja.

"Moje serce skacze z radości" to druga część serii o uroczej Duni.

No nic, zobaczymy, jak to będzie!

It's tough to be a kid, especially when your best friend in the whole world moves away. Dani and Ella are inseparable until Ella moves away. Dani's heart is broken, and some of the other girls in her class are cruel to her. Through it all, Dani never gives up expecting her friend to come back and sit in the seat next to her in class.

My heart was breaking for Dani as I read this delightful little story of childhood heartbreak. I could easily relate to Dani's feelings as my friends always seemed to move away from me too. This story is very simply and beautifully written. This would make a wonderful read-aloud book for parent and child.

Cute story. Good with dealing with loss and bullies. I wouldn’t say squirt sauce in the faces of your bullies but fighting back is an option

Dani has always been happy, but now that her best friend has moved away to another city, she is unhappy sometimes too. But Dani tries not to think about being unhappy. Dani didn’t know anyone in her class when she started school, but now she does. When two girls in her class both get a crush on the same boy and ask him who likes best, they are amazed when he shows that he’s much more likely to like Dani. Dani tried to keep being friendly with the girls, but neither of them wanted anything to do with her. Dani sat by herself at lunch, but she didn’t mind because she just thought about all of the fun she had visiting her best friend. But then her teacher moved her between the two girls, and Dani was cruelly pinched by them. Dani finally had enough, and reacted by squirting them (and then the teacher accidentally) with sauce. Now it is up to Dani to tell the truth about what happened and to figure out how to find happiness without her best friend at her side.

This is the second book featuring Dani, following My Happy Life, which tells the story of how Dani met her best friend and then how she had to move away. In this second book, the focus is on bullying and the author does a great job with it. As the situation escalates, Dani remains apart from the situation for awhile, then finds herself right in the middle of it. I appreciate that Dani is not faultless in the situation in her reaction, but also that she reacts humanly and believably to the situation.

Set in Sweden, the stories have a universal appeal but also are clearly not set in the United States. This is a gentle introduction to the subtle cultural differences and a great way to start a discussion about how people are both the same and different in other cultures.

Fans of the first book will love the next in Dani’s adventures. This will also find an audience as a read-aloud for teachers wishing to discuss bullying with elementary students. Appropriate for ages 7-9.

Dani's and her best friend, Ella, have moved away from each other and she misses her terribly. To make matters worse, two girls in school decide to be mean to her because the boy they like seems to like Dani better than them. She tries her best to ignore it and have a happy attitude, choosing to sit alone at lunchtime and concentrate on all the fun she has with her friend Ella when they are together. When the teacher makes Dani move to sit between the mean girls, they pinch her until her arms are red and sore. When she can take it no more, Dani reacts by squirting sauce on both girls--and a little bit on the teacher, too-- and then Dani is the one who is in trouble.

While I am not sure the ending where Ella hides in her father's car and comes to visit is very realistic, that was really my only problem with this book. The characters are realistic, Dani is very sympathetic, and the bullying situation is handled well once the truth comes out. The line-drawing illustrations are adorable, as well. Girls who are just beginning smaller chapter books may enjoy this one.

A free copy of this book was provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
My Heart is Laughing is the story of Dani, a little girl whose best friend Ella has recently moved away. Dani really misses Ella and when she starts being picked on by other girls in her class it makes her day go from bad to worse.
There were some parts of this story that were really sweet, like the friendship between Dani and Ella and the moments they share, such as playing in the monkey tree. However, when reading it I felt that a lot of the story's fluency and heart got lost in the translation from the original language. Too many parts of the plot felt very abrupt and switched quickly from one scenario to the next with little fluidity. It's a shame because I feel this would have read as a much more heartfelt story with a different translation.
A sweet story about friendships that doesn't quite translate across the page. 2.5 stars.

My Heart is Laughing by Rose Lagercrantz, illustrated by Eva Eriksson, 119 pages. EARLY CHAPTER BOOK Gecko Press, 2014. $17 9781877579523

Language: PG (1 swear, 0 ‘f’); Mature Content: PG; Violence: PG

BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - ESSENTIAL

AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

Dani is a charming lighthearted girl who thrives on being happy. This is a story of friendship, of friends moving far away, bullies in school, learning to solve problems and challenges when they arise, and the miracle of forgiveness.

The stories and illustrations are delightful. It reminds me of the Romona Quimby books but she has a more positive outlook on life. This book has all the charm of a great story and extremely relatable to a kid. The illustrations just add that extra greatness to the story.

DNF at page 57.

I wish I could read this series in the original language. However, as I don't speak Swedish I'm stuck with the English version, and I'm annoyed with the publisher/translator for changing things that didn't need to be changed. The main characters' names are Dunne and Ella Frida in the original, and Dani and Ella in this translation. I can sort of understand changing Dunne to Dani (because English speakers would likely turn Dunne into "done") but what's wrong with Ella Frida? And why are we told that Dunne/Dani has hamsters, when it is plainly obvious from the illustrations and description that they are guinea pigs? Hamsters don't "squeak with delight." Now I have to wonder what else was arbitrarily changed into nonsense for the American market, and why?!

Another book in the Dani series for In-Between readers translated from the original Swedish. Dani is always happy, except for now and then when she is unhappy, but she doesn't count those times. With her best friend Ella having moved to another town, Dani suddenly finds herself the target of her classroom's mean girls through no fault of her own. She tries to ignore their behavior until she just can't take it anymore and things go horribly wrong. But this is Dani so once the grown-ups have sorted out what really happened and Ella just happens to show up, Dani is ready to forgive and forget and return to her happy life.

Sequel to the first book about Dani. She continues to cope with loneliness after Ella moves away. In this book, she has to cope with unkind classmates and the dynamics of making new friends. She clings to the hope that Ella will come back. A bit unrealistically, Ella does appear one day as Dani's father is speaking with the teacher about the bruises on Dani's arms from being pinched by two classmates. The two spend the day together in class and the book moves on.

I liked this book. I had lots of feelings when reading it.

I felt awful when Mickey and Vickey were picking on Dani. I was frightened when Dani accidentally squirted her teacher with sauce. I was so happy and surprised when Ella showed up at school. I'm glad Dani got to spend time with her friend again. I am anxious to read the next book!
