The history recorded in books is, of necessity, a summary of the actions of many people. Each individual involved in a historical event may have a different story to tell. Samuel Livingston rode with the Second Regiment of the Texas Cavalry for nearly four years in the bloodiest internal struggle experienced by the United States, the Civil War. He survived where many others didn’t. In fact, he survived to become an old man. Sam’s recollections about his journey to settle in Texas and his service in the War Between the States (told from the vantage point of a 98-year-old) is not quite the gallant saga you might expect. He remembers the violence and the suffering vividly, but he also recalls moments of humor and even romance.
