Anne has spent her whole life being menaced by demons, but things have gotten a little easier since 12-year-old exorcist Haru Vellman took her in. Now Anne must face her scariest foe yet.. Haru's family! Dorothea, the head of the Vellman clan, sets down a challenge for Anne: if Anne can exorcise a demon that's been lurking in a nearby convent, Dorothea will approve of Haru and Anne's engagement. However, since men aren't allowed inside the convent walls, Anne will have to do it alone, without Haru's help...
Such a sweet, yet satisfying volume! Anne finally swallows her pride and professes her love for Haru, and I kid you not my heart swelled a bit. I really do enjoy their relationship and while Haru's advances can be off-putting to most, what like is that Anne doesn't allow it. She knows what's appropriate and knows her boundaries and forces Haru to respect them. Yes, he persists in his attempts, but she stands firm. However, while Haru does make advances, you can tell from his behavior that he would never cross her boundaries. As much as he flirts, he also genuinely loves Anne and respects her as a person and would never do anything to harm her. Hell, in this volume he goes out of his way to make sure she's safe, even going so far as to cross-dress to travel with her. He makes advances, sure, but it's clear that's more flirtation than anything and he would never put Anne in a situation she didn't feel comfortable with. I find it amusing that there is more respect in this relationship than in most romances, particularly novels, and even more amusing that it's a relationship between a twelve year old boy and seventeen year old girl. Oh manga, how I love thee.
One last thing I want to touch on is how Anne feels insulted that both Monica and Haru want to exorcise the demon despite this being Anne's responsibility. I enjoyed seeing Anne struggle with the realization that she's in way over her head by accepting this task. Yet when confronted with the possibility that she's not good enough for Haru rather than run home or demand a different task, she decides she's going to buckle down and learn more about his work so she can stay beside him and be accepted into his family. Even though she may not have done as much physical work in exorcising the demon, her fierce determination and willpower was integral to helping Haru. Also, she straight-up punched Haru, who was possessed with the demon at the time, so she effectively punched a demon. So awesome, I adore her.
Not much else to say, a great volume showcasing a great couple. Now to bide my time for volume four...
This was a very fun volume. Haru does not let anything stop him. I believe that an important element was mentioned in the story so far page. If you have not read this volume skip the page that recounts the story. I am looking forward to Haru, Annie, and Monica taking on Mephisto.
We got a little bit of jealousy coursing through the cougar! Honestly, this book series is hitting all the tropes, but I clearly need/want that right now.
super cute Series for teen audiences! The only issue I had with the series is the age gap between the main characters. (12 and 17). This is a historical fantasy romance.
