Just gonna pop in and give a warning. The bad guy is really really gross. the bad GUY fell in love with another GUY and was punished for it, but the other characters make it sound like it was an injustice against him and the guy. That's plain evil, and the line seems blurred as though these characters think that wickedness is OK. Proceed with caution.

Another wonderful Sherlock and Lucy story - with romance!

I loved it! Another excellent mystery, and great sleuthing. But the best is the growing romance of Lucy and Jack, with a wonderful conclusion!

We listened to this book on Audible. It is a very good story and was very well read by two excellent readers. There are a number of other books in the series that we plan to listen to.

Diogenes Club’s. General John Pettigrew (retired Indian Army general) had been killed.
Mr. William “Sherlock” Scott Holmes (Scotland Yard consulting detective) & Dr. John Hamish
Watson (husband, Sherlock's BMF. MD), DI Greg Lestrade (Scotland Yard), & Constable Jack Kelly (London Metropolitan PD) arrived at the crime scene.
Lucy James (Sherlock's daughter, P/T investigative partner) had arrived also.
The charwoman looked on as Sherlock pulled back the bedsheet to observe the male (60+) corpse.
Mr. Carey (General Pettigrew’s nephew) had arrived to look over matters.
The Diogenes Club case investigation/interviews continue.
Edward Barton introduced Lord Lansdowne.
Mr. Dimitrios (Greek arms dealer) was in custody.
Jack was madly in love with Lucy (Sherlock’s daughter).

Will the Diogenes Club murder case get solved & someone brought to justice?

I do not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing free books from publishers & authors. Therefore, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one.

An awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very professionally written 19th Century mystery book. It was extremely easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a large description list of unique characters, settings, facts etc. to keep track of. This could also make another great 19th Century mystery movie, or better yet a mini-TV series. To be continued. An extremely easy rating of 5 stars.

Performance: ****
Story: **

Trigger Warnings: Mass Shooting, Torture

I continue to be impressed with the narration and it remains the best part of this series. Unfortunately missteps in the story itself get in the way here, so I can’t recommend this specific episode unless you are (like me) a completionist. The primary issue for me was the strange moral lapse of the main characters in the middle of the story that was completely out of place to the general wholesome tone of the story. Once that irritation settled, it only increased with each little apparent inconsistency … such as the relatively weak portrayal of Sherlock Holmes himself (yes, I understand the need for others to participate in the plot, but that is not how Sherlock works, so it would have been better for him to remain mostly in the shadows and allow this to be more Lucy’s story).

For somebody who was so famous for his perception, Sherlock was frequently second on the scene so to speak. Unlike the previous stories, there was much less international intrigue here as the plot unfolded with a more domestic feel. The mystery itself was well done if also fairly simple and Lucy’s relationship with her father and Constable Kelly (James) advances satisfactorily.

I was given this free advance review/listener copy (ARC) audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I love historical mysteries and especially the character of Sherlock Holmes. I have read many Sherlock pastiches; the Sherlock & Lucy James books by Anna Elliott & Charles Veley rank high along Goldberg's Daughter of Sherlock Holmes series. Off the top of my head, the two arguable best Sherlock related historical mysteries may be Laurie King’s Russell and Holmes series and the Anna Kronberg Thrillers by German author Annelie Wendeberg. All of these referenced books and series have Sherlock matched to a young, strong, intelligent woman; if this is something you enjoy, then give this series and these strong female characters a try.

Lucy James is back and working with her father Sherlock Holmes in this the 5th entry in the Lucy James Series: “Death at the Diogenes Club.” Although this can be read as a stand-alone mystery, I do highly recommend that you read this series in order to be able to watch the characters evolve. Also, there are many allusions to past events from previous stories. As with the previous books, the characters were developed well and the plot was engaging. I enjoyed the series and look forward to reading the next one soon. The optimal reading order of these Sherlock and Lucy books is: [1] “The Crown Jewel Mystery,” [2] “The Last Moriarty,” and [3] then continue in order. If you are a Sherlock fan and are open to new avenues of character and plot, then you should give this series a try.

It was pretty obvious from the start of the series that Detective Constable Jack Kelly was added to the regular cast of characters as a love interest for Lucy James. What was not obvious was how long it would take them to figure out that, as a couple, they were meant to be. It doesn't help that each of them spends a lot of time trying to divine what the other is thinking and getting it all wrong.

Character development in this series puts a lot of emphasis on intelligence and capability. Both Jack and his young sister Becky are both. Lucy James could be seen as a female Sherlock Holmes were it not for her impetuous nature and somewhat fiery demeanor. I'm guessing that if you have gotten this far into the series you know the relationship between Lucy and Sherlock and how that old adage about apples falling from the tree applies but with caveats.

In previous books we had the benefit of two points of view, that of Watson and that of Lucy James. In DEATH AT THE DIOGENES CLUB the entire story is presented from Lucy's point of view. Given this perspective, we learn more about how Lucy defines herself, and how she learns to face her greatest fears. The book still has all the requisite clues and action to keep it well within the boundaries of Holmesian canon while provoking a tear or two along the way.

All in all I count this as a most satisfying read.

~Disclaimer: I received a free audiobook copy of this book. ~

At the beginning of the book, Death at the Diogenes Club by Anna Elliott, I appreciated the quote that captured the essence of Sherlock Holmes: "I decided within a week of knowing him that the real trouble with Sherlock Holmes was that he had no switch to turn his mental powers off and on. Entering into conversation with him was like being a butterfly and asking to be skewered by an entomologist's pin; if you spoke to Sherlock Holmes, you placed yourself under the fierce lens of his scrutiny—inescapably." The perspective from Holmes' daughter really brought his character to life.

This book delves into the fallout from the previous book, exploring Lucy's trauma and the damaged leg of Jack. The story also sheds light on Jack's past. The level of violence in this book is more intense than in previous books. Despite this, the series still feels fresh and enjoyable.

Although the story is a bit more predictable than previous books, the logic of the series is still engaging, and the narration remains enjoyable.

These are so much fun!

I love these little nod to Sherlock and sir Conan doyle. They are well written, extensively historically researched, and all the stories (and the overarching story) keep readers well engaged. The characters are sympathetic and mesh together well, even the great detective himself. I enjoy mycroft being a regular pop in, acting as not so much a foil to sherlock, but a reactionary mirror to add depth to the readers insight into his thought process, as well as add a bit of snark and humor when the brothers' encounters are viewed by a third party. Red herrings are usually well done and not blatantly obvious, but there is definitely more information for the reader to easily consider, in contrast to the original Holmes, where you only realized all you missed as Sherlock lays out his case at the end. Certainly, this series has been a welcome find for me. Highly recommended!

This adventure has its dark moments--as our cover hints at with its color tones of deep purple and black. On the mystery level, there's murder, blackmail, and the threat of even more killings. And on the deeper, emotional level, there's despair, cynicism, and the sheer unyielding pain of injuries and social injustices that seem insurmountable.

But as our cover also shows, there's a light within. On the story level, Sherlock and Lucy lighten things up with magic, both to entertain and unmask the perpetrators. And on the personal level, there's courage and integrity, two powerful forces that Lucy and Jack, after their ordeals in their last adventure, re-discover within themselves. When those powerful forces emerge, crimes are solved, mountains of obstruction are moved, and an inner emotional sunlight bursts forth--with a brilliance that will forever shape these two young detectives and their future adventures.

This time the whole story is told from Lucy's POV so we are more immersed in her side of the investigation but we are also privy to the way in which she sees herself, which is quite revelling. I just love her wit and her big, big heart.

We also get to know a lot more about Jack's background and how said past brings danger into his life and Becky's. Again, I enjoyed the realism of the stories, Jack wasn't miraculously cured after the wounds sustained in the previous book, his leg is giving him trouble and his feelings of depression are very logical in his situation. But... he's too stubborn to just give up, and with the chance of becoming a Sargent in his future, he's, more than ever, willing to keep fighting and get the final prize. If he survives this adventure, that is :P

Fantastically well-narrated, and a great addition to the series

Years ago I was an avid reader of Sir Arthur, so I was prepared to be disappointed if Mr. Veley did not live up to the high standards set by the original Holmes stories. I have enjoyed the first six books in this series and even better have noticed a decided improvement, especially in the area of Holmes' deductions from small bits of evidence. There was a display of sibling rivalry in The Jubilee Problem where the Holmes brothers seemed to be trying to outdo each other in deductions of what each had done that morning. Those now fit into the story almost as well as they did 100+ year ago. Ms. Elliott has certainly made Lucy into a major part and her soon to be husband fits as well. CMac

I found the criticism of belief in ghosts to be so off brand for Conan Doyle that it was a distraction. I get that nowadays we would assume ghosts were a trick and I approve of the way the authors include illusionists and the tricks around such things in the detective story. But in the original stories the supernatural was always an option and Conan Doyle was famously into spiritualism. The reference in this book to the Fox sisters and spiritualism would have been odd at the time because their heyday had been like 60 years before. I would like less violent confrontation with criminal underworld as the heroine and heroes’ physical prowess is just too much to believe. I did enjoy the overt creation of family for the main characters.

Lucy James and Sherlock Holmes must solve a mysterious locked-room murder at London's exclusive Diogenes Club. But Lucy is still coping with the traumatic after-effects of their last case. Then the dangers escalate.
Lucy and Holmes soon find themselves drawn into lethal conflict with the most ruthless gang leader in London. Lucy's relationship with a certain handsome young police detective is also growing more complex and intense. She will need not only to solve a mystery and catch a killer, but also to protect her heart.
If you love a strong heroine and a classic Sherlock Holmes, you're going to love this story.

This is a brilliant piece of work. It has all the elements of a great story. The suspense was gripping , intense at times , some romance , multilayered , compelling and captivating. I think it's my favorite one so far. I've already had to go back and reread several chapters , because I just can't let it go. I'll probably do a reread again in the near future. It was exciting following along with some much loved characters as they put themselves in peril and find resolution after big reveals. I'm so enamored and impressed with this adventure, that I'm sure it will stay with me a long time to come. Phenomenal!!!

A couple different threads come together and big fun ending for long time readers. Now that the big bad German threat is discovered things are stabilizing. Lucy is in 221A and Jack is recovering while studying for the sergeant's exam. Jack leaves for a spa and Becky is staying with Lucy. Then someone is poisoned at the Diogenes Club and ghosts appear. This leads to a fun new hobby for Becky - magic. Things aren't quite what they seem and several threads intertwine leading to much personal progress

Lucy James is a "chip off the old block" with her natural powers of deduction. She is her father's daughter and personally I find it a bit disappointing. She's always running straight in danger with little regard for her life. Whereas, Sherlock looks at the whole picture and thinks through the many possible outcomes. I found it very frustrating Lucy James is so impulsive. The beauty of Sherlock stories is his "logic=elementary". I'm still looking forward to next book in the series as I'm quite invested in the lives of Holmes universe

Lucy James, daughter of Sherlock Holmes, has intruded her way into her father's cases and has proved to be an asset rather than a hindrance. The Diogenes Club has some strange rules, like no talking to other members, so when someone dies there, it becomes difficult for anyone to find the murderer. From there, the characters begin to parade through the story. I love the meticulous plotting, the differences in characters, and all the other things that show the reader the differences between people. I loved this book.

Have enjoyed the five books in this series. This one was worth the read. The books read easily and the mysteries and adventures are great. The relationship between Lucy and her boy friend Jack seems to slow or actually stop the momentum of the book at times. ( I just scanned through those parts ). Also Lucy has a mothering relationship on Jacks little sister which comes across awkward and juvenile at times.
If you scan past those the book is very good. I will purchase the next few books and see how it goes.
The series is enjoyable so far.

Sherlock and Lucy

I have read all the Sherlock Holmes and Lucy James mysteries and decided to wait until I was through with them to write a review. I am well and truly hooked! They are so good every one of them, I can't even pick a favorite. They are well worth reading, I can't wait for the next one! The writing team of Elliot and Chelly make the stories come alive. I would give them more stars if I could.

Thank you to https://www.smithpublicity.com/ for the book for an honest review!

I read these books out of order because I wasn’t sure and should have checked, but either way wasn’t hard to follow.

This whole new series is a fun new take on Sherlock Holmes and his daughter Lucy. I felt like I was transported into the story with then, solving the mystery and clues to who-done-it.

I highly recommend this series for anyone who has ever loved Sherlock and wants a fresh new spin on them

Another fine addition to the series

Lucy and Sherlock along with the regular group are trying to solve an arms theft along with a murder at the Diogenes Cub. The book has many twists and turns and the ending is a surprise. The character of Lucy continues to be expanded and you can see where Anna has helped really refine her role as Sherlocks daughter. I look forward to reading the next book

Don't miss these really really good mysteries!

Arthur Conan Doyle did not live long enough to write these books that they have his spirit his wit and an amazingly good detailed plot. I've enjoyed every minute of each of these books and this particular one is especially good at turns, plot twists well-drawn characters and lots of action. Homes famous deductions add a ring of Truth to each page. Lots of new characters but all of them suitable for holmes' associates.

Excellent Read

I’m at a loss to how authors can write a series and NOT have each book seem just like the last. This series is different each time and logically and intriguingly written. Well researched. The characters are well defined. The plots suspenseful. The narratives written with such vivid descriptions that the pages become a movie viewed in your mind. Thoroughly enjoyable.

charming

This series has believable characters, with wonderful personalities. The enemy are well done making it a bit difficult to figure out who that is. I usually get them 75% or more of the time, but with this series it’s below that and I read at least 300 books a year. Books are better than the tele or tv whichever word one uses for that item of entertainment. I wish BBC would make a series on film of this wonderful historical series.

Think there is only 1 more regular longer story before there are no more, except the short story collection, which I put off until the end of the long ones, hopefully not messing with continuity too much. The next 1 in Jack the ripper one, and may be the last of the longer ones, at least for now, but I will check when I pull up that one next.

Wonderful listening

Due to eye issues Alexa reads to me. A will written romantic thriller mystery in the Sherlock Holmes and Lucy James Mystery Series. The characters are interesting and will developed. The story line is fast moving with lots of misdirection leading to the unexpected conclusions. I would recommend this series to Sherlock Holmes fans. Enjoy reading 🔰2021 🎩🏰

Just want the excitement to continue forever

The wonderful style of writing is like none others. One can see the setting , feel the emotions , and marvel as "elementary " deduction evolve. The personalities are relatable. This is a series I already know will be read over and over.
