A surprisingly tense and involving 1973 quasi-Avengers-type novel in which the author describes action and ratchets up the suspense most effectively, even if characters are standard and anything other than action is a little clumsily done. Lady Jennifer Torrington and her two upper-class male friends, one American and one Italian, are caught up in the crimes of a private army, first stealing from a luxury yacht, then from the rich at an opera, and, after capture and rescue, culminating at Royal Ascot. Unexpectedly, this holds up well today
