Okay, I knew it’d been a while, but apparently it’s been 2.5 years since the previous Nichelle Clarke book (then titled the Headlines in High Heels Mysteries). Since then, the author has acquired a new publisher for the series, the series has a new look and also a new name – they’re now the Nichelle Clarke Crime Thrillers. The new covers are edgier and definitely darker than the previous ones, which reflected a much more cosy feel. I binged the previous books over a period of about six months, I think. The first four or five had been released and then I picked up the others. I’ve checked back periodically since reading the 6th, hoping it would continue and the 7th is finally here.

No sooner does Nichelle get the amazing news that she’s being pulled in by the political reporter to help cover a Presidential visit to Richmond, when she gets an interesting tidbit of information – a dead body has been found in the Mayor’s office. Kyle, ATF agent and Nichelle’s long-ago boyfriend, sends a cryptic message hinting at the identity of the victim but then vanishes, giving her the standard ‘no comment’ line.

That doesn’t wash with Nichelle – he can’t just offer up some information and then vanish after begging her not to print it. Nichelle is determined to get to the bottom of what happened, especially as it seems like the possible victim (apparently identification is an issue) is someone that she knows from an earlier case she investigated and reported on. Nichelle is also confused when she confides in Joey, her boyfriend of dubious employment and it seems he’s much more affected by this death than she expected. What exactly is going on? Joey has also warned her off the Presidential coverage but is vague about the why – just that he doesn’t want her anywhere near it. Nichelle doesn’t really do what she’s told, especially if he’s not going to give her a reason but she’s curious about what Joey knows that she doesn’t. And that’s a whole can of worms right there, given Joey’s line of work and the difficulties of being a crime reporter when your boyfriend is probably in the business of producing it. The deeper Nichelle gets, the more intriguing and dangerous this becomes – and when she takes a gamble, she might not just have blown up her career but she could also have signed her own death warrant.

This was an explosive ride from start to finish, in lots of ways. I feel as though this is a bit of a new direction for Nichelle, perhaps to match the new look. The fundamentals are still the same – Nichelle is still amazing at her job, she still has a great ‘nose’ for trouble and she’s still smart enough to puzzle things through, although this book does lead to her getting it wrong at one stage, but she figures out so quickly why and how. Nichelle has been struggling in her job for a while – it’s not a qualifications issue. It’s more the owner of the newspaper doesn’t really like her and has wanted to replace her for quite a while now. Nichelle’s boss Bob has always been able to back her up and keep her in the crime position but the way that things play out here suggest a very new direction for both Bob and Nichelle and I think I like it. I think it gives her a lot more scope and it might allow her to branch out into some more diverse and complex topics and features. I think the dynamics of the new situation will be really interesting in future books.

Something else that will be interesting is the situation with Joey. I really like Joey and have ever since he appeared in Nichelle’s living room in the first book. I’ve always been curious as to how Walker would progress with Nichelle and Joey given their different….situations and it seems she’s decided in this book. I’m not sure I like one of the complications of this but I hope it’s short term pain for some long term gain. I think the thing I like the most about Joey is that deep down, he knows that Nichelle is always going to do what she’s going to do – and it’s get on board or get out of the way. And he tends to just get on board. He might occasionally try to warn her off (like with the Presidential visit) but ultimately, he knows that it isn’t going to work. Nichelle simply isn’t like that. And he better just roll his sleeves up and try and keep her from getting dead, but in this book it’s kind of Nichelle who keeps Joey from getting dead. They work together so well, I’d really enjoy seeing them in that capacity more in the future.

I think this is probably my favourite in the series.

This isn't the same Nichelle from the first six books in this series. If you like LynDee Walker's newest series featuring Faith you will like the new Nichelle. I don't. The final outcome was riveting, high tension and gory. No longer any cozy components.

Previously this series was titled: High Heels Mysteries but there were very few mentions of exclusive footwear. This latest episode the references to Louboutin and Manolo are constant - almost like someone is trying too hard to remind us who Nichelle is since there has been a long break between books 6 and 7.

I give the book a 4/5 because it is well written overall and they mystery is well done.

I received an ARC from the author which I very much appreciate. I just miss my old Nichelle.

Review to come...

Quick Thoughts:

I have loved Nichelle as a character for quite some time. She's funny and smart and has great taste in shoes.

It's been some time since the last Nichelle book was published and I was quite excited to see LynDee doing another book- and with a new publisher.

However, this book is def more "gritty"/darker than I recall her previous books being. It's not a bad thing, but it's a def going to require an adjustment period for me about Nichelle and the series.

This book was fabulous, you never know who did it or who is the culprit, it was a chase. Political books are normally not my thing because I was got a little bit confused with all the different head games.

This book not only gave us something to root for but also so many questions and small answers along the way it was intense in a way I wasn’t expecting.

The way that Kyle acted had me so confused but also intrigued because he’s not one to freak out. All he wanted was to keep Nichelle safe and by accidentally getting her involved he knew she wouldn’t be.

Joey surprised me I loved when Nichelle and Joey work together those two are fire. I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen next I am sad that the series only has one more book left.

Again Therese is awesome!

Another Nichelle Clarke crime thriller, well-written and filled with hair-raising drama! I was shocked to read about a call girl being found dead in the governor’s office. I was also appalled to read about the plans to construct a uranium bomb to cause a major catastrophe. I can’t wait to read the next Nichelle book!

Once again, there was good writing and i love that Nichelle uses her intelligence and heart to solve the mystery. There was a ton of action in this Nichelle book. It took all the important people in her life coming together to get through this one. I am excited to see where Nichelle's changes take her in the next installment

One of the Best of the Series!

I wasn't sure I was going to like this one when local politics was involved in the case but I shouldn't have worried as it was one of the best in the series, in my opinion anyway. Probably the most exciting too and that's saying a lot for this series that is usually full of action.

This is the seventh book of the series and by now the characters are favorites and well known to me. Nichelle is up to her eyebrows in the case of a dead prostitute, one that was featured in an earlier book. This girl is found on the governor's desk making for even more intrigue. Joey,of course, is still around only now he lives in the same town as Nichelle. The couple is closer than ever and this time Joey is almost as involved in the case as Nichelle.

I enjoyed this one immensely and it had me on the edge of my chair in at least a couple of parts of the story. I rated it 5 stars and I think it was worthy of all 5 stars. Highly recommended to ages 16 plus.

It is good to have twists in a story, but in that story there are so many twists that it made me dizzy. So many names that you have to memorize a list every name and its function in the story. If you don't read the book in 3 to 4 days you will forget who is who in the story. I hate those books where the author plays it smart and create the final villain out of no where.

Deadly Politics from LynDee Walker is the latest in the Nichelle Clarke series. If you haven't read any of the other books yet you can start with this one, I think it could easily be read as a standalone, but if you like a series with a protagonist you can care about then start with whichever one you'd like but read them all. They are well worth your time.

I'll direct my comments largely to those unfamiliar with the series since those who have read the others will likely read, and be pleased, with this latest volume. Nichelle is a well-rounded character. Not too perfect but not too bad either. Most of her success, and missteps, come as a result of not only the situation she finds herself in but who she is as a person. Many protagonists in a series like this one tend to be rounded but, for the sake of each novel, emphasis sometimes shifts to stereotypes (journalist, detective, vigilante, lawyer, etc) so that the story can keep up a brisk pace. Walker keeps the pace up while keeping who Nichelle is as an equal part of the narrative with what she is. So if you like character driven novels with action, this might be your best new reading series.

The action, while amazing, never leaves the realm of reality and possibility, which in some ways makes it have a greater impact. With far-fetched stories we can be caught up in the story then, when we're finished, feel like the chances of anything like that happening are slim. With this series, there is a little thought in the back of your mind: this not only could happen but something like it likely has happened. Now that can be suspenseful on its own.

The writing itself is wonderful. Scenes are set so you feel like you're there. You can easily put yourself in the scene and take in your surroundings. Dialogue is believable and natural and helps to propel the story along. This is not a novel that relies on just the story or just good writing. This is a good story told with good writing.

So yes, I recommend this book, as well as the entire series, to any readers who like crime series. If you've read some of the series and are familiar with Nichelle, then I think you will like this one quite a bit, I did.

Sometimes a certain author and main character will click with a reader. That’s what happened to me with writer LynDee Walker and her character Nichelle Clarke, a reporter for the Richmond Telegraph. I was hooked from page one-of Front Page Fatality, the first book in the Nichelle Clarke Crime Thriller Series and from then on anxiously awaited the release of each book. It’s been a bit longer wait for book 7 Deadly Politics to be released, yet trust me it was definitely worth it; I think it may be the best book in the series to date. Deadly Politics begins with Nichelle Clarke being given the opportunity to cover a speech given by the President’s husband when he and the President visit Richmond. Yes, President Denham is a woman. Nichelle is ecstatic as she has always been interested in the political beat; while she is savoring her delight she gets a message from Aaron, a Richmond police detective, and Kyle, her first love and current ATF agent. A murder has taken place in the governor’s mansion, a dead body was found lying on his desk. From that point buckle your seat belt and hold on for a gripping storyline that will have you on the edge of your seat. Nichelle knew the victim Lakshmi Drake, a brilliant student and former call-girl, she had encountered while working on a previous story. What was she doing in the governor’s office? Was the upstanding highly principled Governor Blaine having an affair? Obviously the story had the potential to stir up a political powder keg so the “powers that be” were trying to contain it. Nichelle, with her reporter’s zeal and passion for truth, was determined to find out what had actually happened and why. Her investigation appears to be thwarted at every turn even by those closest to her- even Joey her enigmatic yet loving and supportive boyfriend. So many possible motives emerge, yet many are just dead ends. I could go on, however I highly recommend that you read Deadly Politics to get the answers. It is a very well crafted, fast-paced, suspenseful page turner with many twists and turns. I’m so glad LynDee and Nichelle have returned!

“Deadly Politics” earns 5/5 Secrets & Scandals…Engaging & Nail/biting Thriller!

I decided to venture outside my “cozy” bubble with LynDee Walker’s newest crime thriller “Deadly Politics,” and WOW! was it worth it. A big fan of the efforts and perseverance of reporters on MSNBC and CNN, I found reporter Nichelle Clarke the perfect character to wade through the mire of politics and uncover the truth about a dead woman found in the governor’s office. Although Walker could have chosen a third-person narrative putting the reader on the outside looking in, she chose to put us right in the middle with Nichelle’s “I” perspective. Ok, first, a woman president? I enjoyed that should have been and might be reality, but the rest of the plot was realistic with nail-biting intrigue, secrets best secret, adult themes, not-so-cozy issues, and crimes that need to be reported, no matter the cost. I found Walker’s writing style clever and compelling with vivid descriptions that for “only-cozy” fans would find too realistic, engaging dialogue, romantic entanglements, and an ending that literally made me say, “Wow!” I am a newbie, but I was never at a disadvantage starting with book seven. What a great book! I just might be a fan of crime thrillers. No, I am sure of it…I am a crime thriller fan! Thank you, LynDee Walker.

The long wait for the next book in the Nichelle Clark series is over! It is everything you expected and more. This is a fabulous series by Lyndee Walker that will grab you from page 1.

Nichelle is in a meeting with her boss when Trudy comes in with an offer Nichelle can't turn down: the chance to cover a speech given by the President's husband at the same time as the speech given by the President which is covered by Trudy. Still in the meeting going over the day's edition, Nichelle gets a text from Kyle quickly followed by one from Aaron. When she meets with Kyle, an ATF agent and former boyfriend, it's to find out a body of a call girl has been found...in the governor's office. The deeper Nichelle gets into the investigation, she is beginning to wonder who she can trust, who is friend or foe. Will the action she takes in good faith affect her dream of covering a presidential speech?

Just like the previous 6 books in this series, it is non-stop action, cleverly plotted with a twist I never saw coming. When I read the last word, I thought Wow! If you have never read the Nichelle Clark books, you are missing out with one of the best series out there. If you have read this series, then you are in for a treat with Deadly Politics.

“Finding truth in situations both ordinary and exceptional is my favorite thing about the news business. When a big story breaks, my universe narrows to the thrill of the chase. Caffeine becomes a food group, adrenaline a friend. Schedules evaporate. Sleep is for suckers who settle for second place. I love every minute of it. But that rush has taught me to appreciate the quieter days, too.”

There’s been a murder at the State Capital and Nichelle Clarke:investigative reporter, is on the case. Turns out the victim is someone Nichelle interviewed, respected and admired, and she’s going to find out how and why she was killed.

Stonewalling politicos block Nichelle’s investigation, and as her determination finds the parts unraveling and behind it are things Nichelle can’t begin to imagine.

I love Nichelle Clark and I’m so glad LynDee Walker has written another book in the series. The world has changed since Nichelle came on the scene, but our heroine is still intelligent who gets into the biggest messes, and despite the odds, gets out. Highly Recommended 5/5

Wow! I just finished reading, Deadly Politics, by LynDee Walker. It’s been a long wait for Nichelle’s return! The plot was gripping and the characters dynamic! I honestly was completely caught by surprise at the end!

Nichelle thinks she gets involved in a political murder but it’s so much more! As she works to uncover the real story, Kyle, Aaron, Landers, and Joey do their best to help solve the case and keep her safe. The plot twists with a dead call girl, a missing governor’s son, an unhinged ex-senator, a crooked federal agent, and a bomb. With the President visiting Richmond, the pressure is on.

Nichelle’s relationships with Joey (still romantic with secrets) and Kyle are complicated. I love the dynamics between the three. I’m personally still hoping Kyle ends up with Nichelle.

This series started my cozy addiction. Nichelle will always be one of my favorite protagonist.

The only downside is the constant misuse of the Lord’s name. I realize that’s real world but it is hard for me to read.

Deadly Politics, the Nichele Clark Crime Thriller, is magic in print. A large part of that magic is amazing writing that LynDee Walker weaves into to each of her novels, but slight-of-hand seems to play a part in the complex and nothing-is-quite-what-it-seems plot that Nichele Clark, investigative reporter, is called to unravel in her newest book. The first call in fact comes from friend informing her old friend that there has been a murder in the state capitol. Soon she hears that the victim is a woman she had once reported on, a woman she had come to admire. A sudden stonewall blocking all new information is thrown around and the incident denials of the death lead the reporter to unravel an intricate web of deceit for information that leads far beyond anything she should have imagine. An intelligent, witty and strong protagonist and a wonderful but mysterious lover are among the highlights of this exhilarating thriller.

Nichelle Clarke gets a call from Kyle Miller, who reveals something that is to be kept off the record concerning Lakshmi Drake. Nichelle knows Lakshmi, whom she had tried to warn. Nichelle went nosing on the internet into Lakshmi and noted a picture on social media, which disappeared right before her eyes.

Lakshmi's body was found on the governor's desk, and from social media, she was seeing his son. The more Nichelle dug, the more stone walls she hit. When Nichelle decides to release a story, she doesn't realize the danger that is involved, which includes herself. She, also, doesn't know who her friends are because she knows something is being kept from her. Her friends wouldn't lie to her, would they?

Great thriller that kept me guessing!

I received an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

So, many, new characters... so, many, moving parts. I could not stop listening to this audiobook, but I was exhausted when it ended. This book does not know if it wants to be a murder mystery, a political drama, or a Bond movie (specifically, the one with Denise Richards as the nuclear scientist).

I do appreciate that this book was different than the previous ones in the series. Niche lost her support system and does not know who to trust. Who can blame her though? Both Kyle and Joey, her closest confidants, lied to her and hid things from her. All the men in her life sucked at picking up their phones when she needed help. The charming secondary characters from the past books, such as Parker and Bob, are MIA for one reason or another.

I liked this book, but I did not love it. I wanted to love it... it reminded me of a roller coaster ride - thrilling but gave me whiplash.

Can’t wait for more

Ms. Walker is a master at leaving you wanting more while also giving you a complete story. In this Nichelle Clarke thriller, we get a deeper dive into Nichelle and Joey’s relationship, but miss some of the supporting characters we’ve grown used to. It’s not a bad thing, I enjoyed a more personal look into their lives.
Nichelle has worked for almost 10 years to get to the point where she’s covering politics and today might be her foot in the door. The President is coming to Richmond, and she’s been asked to help cover the visit.
But a body found on the Governor’s desk may just trump a visit by the Commander in Chief and Nichelle isn’t sure why no one is talking about the victim.
This story has twists and turns guaranteed to leave you breathless. Excellent plot and characters.

This is the seventh in the series and the first I have read. It is not a cozy mystery.

Wow! I liked the twists, turns, and surprises. It was somewhat gory. This is a well-written story with a good mystery. We get a glimpse of the underbelly of the political world. I can only hope it is stuff in novels and not real life.

Reporter Nichelle Clarke is excited to be able to cover a presidential speech until a dead body, Lakshmi Drake, is discovered on the governor’s desk. As she digs into this investigation to get at the truth, she finds that she doesn’t know who she can trust. Something is being kept from her. She just doesn’t know what.

I was given an ARC e-copy of the book and am not required to give a positive review.

Politics, friendship, law enforcement, and a reporter who demands truth

What a ride! An attack in the governor's office is only the first event in a series that becomes ever more threatening and frightening as Nichelle struggles to understand what is happening in her beloved Richmond. With her newspaper's publisher becoming ever more critical and obstructive, she relies on the other people in her life to help her get to the bottom of the political shenanigans that are threatening everything she holds dear. This is the best, most well-thought-out story I've read in years and I recommend it without reservation.

Wow! Nonstop action with just enough breathing room between everything. Each event brought a new level of tension and let us see so many different parts of the political and journalistic worlds. Felt like the right time in the series for these high stakes. I never wanted to stop reading. I think it’s my favorite one in the series so far.

It is different from the other books in the series. Possibly because of the publisher change. The past few have moved to a darker place, so less cozy and more gritty. I think it works for this point in the series though and for the story it was telling. This book needed the tension and grit and depth and I thought it was really well done.

Nichelle is up to her arms in political intrigue when a woman from one of her past stories is murdered in the governor's mansion. Multi layered truths & lies with wild goose chases, friends turning into enemies, & a zigzag mystery of what's really going on and the lengths people will go to cover it up. Nicey puts her reputation on the line and is in danger of knowing who to trust in her small circle. Does Joey really love her and what is he hiding? Is Kyle still her friend or is he lying to her? Are her police informants involved? A twisting & turning story that pulls you in and you can't figure out what really happened until the end

Deadly Politics, the seventh book in the Nichelle Clarke thriller series, finds Nichelle going from excitement about a political assignment to a dead body in the governor's office. The murder investigation quickly becomes a room of trick mirrors for Nichelle -- who can she trust? The questions pile up, and each piece of information adds to the mystery. If she doesn't figure out this puzzle, the result could well be deadly. In Deadly Politics, Nichelle is gritty and tenacious. I loved this book as well as the series. I highly recommend it!

I was fortunate to recieve an ARC copy of this book.

All the usual characters are there, and the complicated relationship between Nichelle, Joey and Kyle is still there. Must say the ending was a total surprise

All are great characters. Must admit to sometimes being bothered by the unknown in Joeys life, which doesnt jive with Nichelles life, but thinking it may not be what it appears

I totally recommend this entire series

Seventh in a series of 7 Nichelle Clarke mysteries. Clarke is a police and court reporter for the local paper in Richmond, Virginia who would much rather cover Politics. In this latest installment she gets her wish, but I think she regrets it. As a person who cannot walk 2 feet in heels, I found her being able to run and wear her beloved Louboutin heals in all the places she does unfashionable.
