In his first book for children, Grammy and Tony Award-winning performer Billy Joel expresses the deep bond between parent and child as a beautiful lullaby.
This poignant bedtime book is inspired by the lyrics Billy Joel wrote to his own daughter, Alexa, when she was seven years old. It captures the quiet beauty of the father-daughter relationship as a father puts his daughter to bed and promises to always in her heart.
Illustrated in lustrous pastel colors by award-winning artist Yvonne Gilbert, this book captures the same enduring emotions as the original musical performance by Billy Joel. An exclusive audio CD of the song is included for read-along and bedtime listening.
William Joseph Martin "Billy" Joel is an American pianist and singer-songwriter. He released his first hit song, "Piano Man", in 1973. According to the RIAA, he is the sixth best-selling recording artist in the United States.
Joel had Top 10 hits in the '70s, '80s, and '90s; is a six-time Grammy Award winner; and has sold in excess of 150 million albums worldwide.[2] He was inducted into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame (Class of 1992), the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (Class of 1999), and the Long Island Music Hall of Fame (Class of 2006). Joel "retired" from recording pop music in 1993 but continued to tour (sometimes with Elton John). In 2001 he subsequently released Fantasies & Delusions, a CD of classical compositions for piano. In 2007 he returned to recording with a single entitled "All My Life", followed by an extensive "World Tour" from 2005-2008, covering many of the major world cities.
I loved music before I began reading! In this, I am a completionist too; getting every album by artists I admire and being a fan for life of many. Billy Joel is one and I didn’t mind travelling a little ways into the United States, to see him perform with Elton John! Elton played our city later but my only occasion of seeing Billy, was in Minneapolis. I just discovered that he made “Goodnight, My Angel” into a storybook! It is fan fare for me but I love heart-warming children’s literature anyway. In this beautifully-crafted hardcover, I get both.
It comes with a CD of the lullaby but I have certainly known it for years, having the album from whence the hit derives: “River Of Dreams”, 1993. Most reviews rave about this book and song, which signify a new favourite for the generation to come along after this was published, in 2004. I don’t argue with the few who felt that the lyrics didn’t comprise action of a solid storyline. I am uncertain how well it would gel with me, if it weren’t meaningful to me by knowing the poignancy and tenderness of the song. However, I do and love to see put to pages, words that I know how to sing.
Any parent reassuring their children that they will always be with them and that the children will always be safe, is strong and lovely. It is nice to know Billy wrote it for his first daughter, Alexa, before composing his classical album. I imagine this lullaby inspired classical pieces. Many songwriters produce songs about their children, like Corey Hart & Julie Masse. I sing to my cats, as my children and one is named Angel. I love focusing on them, as Billy sings of boating memories for Alexa.
Goodnight, My Angel: A Lullabye Joel, Billy This is a beautiful book on its own, the pictures are colored pencil, the detail and highlights, are exquisite, and you could just get lost in the child's eyes, her innocence, and subtle beauty, is amazing... but that is not the only good thing about the book, the book comes with Billy Joel singing the lullaby, the perfect add on to any teachers lexicon, especially music teachers, the book is so beautiful, and page by page enraptures the children, and you sing this low pitched soft dynamic song the children are transfixed... such a beautiful song and strong teaching helper... I sand with Billy Joel this song to a group of autistic kids, they begged to hear it again, they were so moved......
What a sweet lullaby and the illustrations that accompany this book couldn't be any sweeter. Written for his daughter, Billy Joel wrote the song after his daughter aquestioned him about death.
Even though you may not be with the one that you love, they will always be a part of you, is just one of the messages that I took away from this picture book. Memories and dreams, they are in your heart and become a part of you. This would be a great bedtime book. It comes with a CD or you can watch the video of Billy Joel singing the song on YouTube.
A gentle, lyrical lullabye by one of America’s most prolific and gifted singers is here given the literary treatment. With realistic colored drawings by Yvonne Gilbert, Goodnight, My Angel encompasses all that is lovely, sweet and tender about the storge that exists between parent and child. Accompanied by a CD featuring the title song, this book deserves its place in the pantheon of children’s literature as an instant classic.
This is just gorgeous! This was already one of my favorite lullabies for my little girl, before we found the book, but with the sweet pictures to go along with it and the lyrics printed in case my brain is too tired to remember, this is a sure fire winner. When my little angel mouths the words along with me I just melt. Thanks Billy and Yvonne!
I was a really excited when the little girl I sit for handed me this book and asked me to read it because I had never heard of it before. Inside was the sweetest lullabye along with some of the prettiest pictures. A great night time story!
The illustrations are beautiful - the way this book was crafted is awesome and does Billy Joel's song a lot of justice. one of my favorite songs and now one of my favorite childrens books to flip through. :)
Good night my angel is a good book because it makes you appritate your family because no one lives forever. It makes you feel safe and loved when you read the book because of the words the auther uses.

This is Brent and Coco's song. I gave this book to Brent for Father's Day before Coco was born, but she has commandeered it, and it always is in her bedside book basket.
Grace's favorite night-night book. She heard the song for the first time on the radio the other day and her eyes lit up! She said "this is like my night night angel book!".
This book has not recieved any awards that I know of, and would be appropriate mainly for kindergarteners. It is an illustrated version of the lyrics to Billy Joel's "Lullaby," which is a great song for parents and children. It tells the story of a father singing to his child, and has very well-done illustrations to go with it. Possible in-class uses include placement in the classroom library, or for reading as a way to calm down the class after an exciting acivity or before any sort of nap or rest time.
This was my favourite book as a child, I used to have the CD and I would play the song at the same time and cry when I was like 6. It’s actually the cutest little book too

Book Overview: The words of Billy Joel's song are printed in this book with beautiful colored pencil illustrations to highlight the words of a father's love for his child.
Mary's Review: I love this book. What more can be said when a father expresses the love he has for his child through song? What a beautiful legacy to leave your child. I think my favorite part is ""Someday we'll all be gone, but lullabies go on and on...They never die. That's how you and I will be". I love the thought of as a family we will go on and on.
This book is also beautifully illustrated by Yvonne Gilbert. Illustrations you would love to pull out and hang on the wall of your daughter's room.
I recommend this book for ages 1-8.
