Everly doesn't want to talk to restless spirits, and she definitely didn't sign up to help murdered ghosts resolve their unfinished business. All she does want is to forget about her rotten, cheating ex-husband and return to a quiet life in her quaint, cozy hometown.
But when she stumbles across her high school boyfriend's murdered body—and his ghost—Everly's fresh start begins to look more like paranormal purgatory.
Hudson Montayne is dead, pushy, and somehow even more annoying than he was at seventeen. And he refuses to rest until Everly pieces together the clues and finds his killer.
Only Hudson's murder is just the beginning. Small-town secrets rarely stay hidden, and the more Everly uncovers, the clearer it becomes—someone will stop at nothing to keep the truth hidden.

I live in Maine with my husband, a silly flufferpup named Dash, and a crazy cat named Cricket. I write full time and also create mixed media artwork when I get the chance.
When I was three, my mom brought home a new book and when she went to read it to me, I read it to her instead. That was when she realized I'd learned to read. Since then I couldn't even estimate the number of books I've read. It's a lot!

Ghost Mortem: A Ghostly Mystery is the first book in the brand new series, Haunted Everly After.
This was a great read for me. I really enjoyed it. The author does such a great job with her character development and I fell in love with the protagonist Everly Dupree. When her marriage ended she moved back to her hometown and bought a haunted house.
Not only that Everyly stumbled upon a body at the Bide A Way Motel (GREAT NAME, by the way). Turns out she can see the ghost of the murder victim.
From the book summary which I loved this line:
"You might not believe in ghosts, but sometimes they believe in you"
Ghostly Motem is a cozy mystery with a hint of paranormal. I loved it! The characters were strong and didn't give up.
I am looking forward to the next book in this great new series.
So Everly catches husband cheating with best friend leaves with intention to move back to her parents until she gets back on her feet only to discover they have taken in a lodger, David, who says he will have a conversation with Everly as ro why he came to be staying with her parents. This never happened, no explanation ever given. I found that happened throughout the book, u sort of arrive at final destinations without much of how u got there if u know what I mean. Unfortunately won't be reading the next one. Gave it 2 stars as I did manage to read the whole book and not abandon it.
This is the first I've read by this author, and I'm anxious to read more. I enjoyed Everly's character so much! She's snarky, caring, emotional and just a regular girl, well minus the finding a body thing. Jacy is such a great friend to her and whether she likes him him now or not, I feel like David and Everly may end up getting together eventually, even though due to her cheating scum husband, she's sworn off men (famous last words, right?). She probably never thought she'd be helping a ghost find rest either.
Being a shorter book, there weren't a ton of suspects, but I wasn't completely sure who did in Ev's high school boyfriend, Hudson. The showdown was quick but effective and may or may not have had a little ghostly assistance. I'm really looking forward to reading the next book!
Easy enough to read, but ended VERY abruptly, which was a shame. It felt a little like they ran out of time writing and they had to clear up the murder before the bell. I know it's the first in a series, so hopefully this will be resolved in later books, but there were some things that were brought up or eluded to and then never mentioned again, that needed further explanation. Oddly though, I was most annoyed at the suggestion that anyone could get keys to their new home (especially one they'd never seen before) and NOT immediately investigate every room in that house, let alone not go upstairs until DAYS after moving in! Utter madness.
Another southern cozy mystery, complete with good friends, potential love interest, and slightly troubled past . The ending is interesting and is designed to bring you back for book 2.
There are several things I look for in a good book. Tantamount on my list is the strength of the characters. I’ll have to admit that Everly did not start off as one of my favorite female characters. She’s weak and wish washy. I mean who walks in on their husband and friend having sex in her own bed and simply walks away? Goes to file for divorce and asks for nothing. No alimony, none of the belongings in the house... nothing? The lawyer wants to advocate for her and get her what she is due and she says no. Her lawyer tells her that she should make her experience public and get her revenge that way. She says no. Really? This doesn’t make me have empathy for her or want to see good things happen for her. It makes me want to push her down the stairs. I kid you not. I found myself on more than one occasion yelling at Everly to grow a pair or at least stop being a doormat. Luckily, Everly has the great fortune of having a fantastic support group. Included and at the top of that list is her best friend Jack. I absolutely adore her character. Macy is that of which the best sidekicks are made of. Sadly though, Everly’s now dead high school ex boyfriend has more personality than Everly does. How sad is that?
Somehow though, I found myself not being able to put this down. The wonderful array of small town side characters saved this book. They’re fun, they’re quirky, and I want some of my own. Regardless, I somehow found myself involved in small town living. I finished this book and quickly found myself picking up the second book. Luckily, Everly seemed to finally be growing a pair and standing up for herself, even if it is only to the dead.
Awesome. A terrific read and without a pity party too. But hope the next book sees her ex actually having to cough up some money after the way he treated her. Terrific plot - okay the murder was just a sideshow to the main event but I still loved it. Strong characters who wouldn't give in and roll over but got back into the game and fought back. Finding her husband in her bed with her BFF was one thing but being sacked from her job, careless and homeless was another when the divorce papers were given to her the next day. Now in the moving truck with just a few things she's headed back home. Only to find her room taken by another and having to stay at a local motel. A house, a job and a murder - and all within days. Worse she can now see the ghost of the murder victim. Can she find his murderer and get rid of her unwanted visitor? How will her new life go?
I was expecting this one to get read in a day… it took me 9 days to get through this. I just couldn’t connect with it. I loved Everly and the way the story was developing in the first quarter, but it never developed much. It continued to be Everly trying to navigate her way through the sudden end of her marriage (which I did relate to and was enjoying until it become pretty much the only thing the books as about) with a VERY light sprinkling of ghost activity and solving-ish a murder. The ending was so terribly rushed it was awful. I know it’s the first book in a series, but it was so badly paced. I was very disappointed by the end and will not be continuing the series.
Well, I’m not actually sure how I came about reading this book but I wasn’t disappointed.
My usual genre is romance, spicy romance to be more specific but I have been known to wander off tangent if the story is good enough and this one definitely was! I wrongly assumed the heroine would be indulging in a romance with a ghost which although sounds slightly weird, I’ve read weirder. BUT this wasn’t to be and instead the story is about a woman, Everly, who is down on her luck after she finds her asshat of a husband boinking one of her friends. Lots of things turn to shit in a series of unfortunate events BUT she’s determined and things change for the better. I’m skipping lots of rich descriptions and beautiful realistic relationships with old friends and her parents when she has to move back to her home town and start a life again. Then the death of her high school sweetheart means she’s a source of gossip again as she was in the next motel room to him when this happens. He then turns up as a ghost and a little detective work on her part ensues with his bothering of her an in opportune moments, humour SLT and sweetly done.
But this is all wound around a fantastic, realistic writing of her daily life and I was shocked at how much I loved the journey of her purchasing the ‘spooky mansion’ and the bonding experiences she has with her friends and family whilst cleaning it all up and making it liveable. The writing is sumptuous, funny, heartwarming and believable. One thing I would say is the ending kinda smacks you in the face as it suddenly appears out of nowhere on the turn of a page you don’t expect at ALL. But the murder motive and killer ends all tied up, just a lot quicker than expected.
I will definitely be buying the next instalment, Everly is extremely likeable and the extra characters are well rounded, descriptive and absolutely add to the story brilliantly.
Everly catches her husband cheating on her, and is out on her butt quicker than lightning. having to return home and lick her wounds, she becomes town gossip, buys a house sight unseen, gets a car, gets annoyed, makes friends, gets a job, hears a murder, and manages to solve it. but it doesn't read as fun as that all sounds
Here's what I didn't like: This was slow moving. it isn't until 49% we hit the real inciting moment of the book. She doesn't start really investigating until around 76%, and somehow figures it all out and has the huge confrontation at 97%--which is all summarized, and a mess. On top of the slow moving plot and weird connections you didn't see until the MC explains what happens, there are a bunch of errors, typos, punctuations through the entire book. It grew worse the further I read. It needs a lot of work, and a set of eyes that aren't close to the work. however, it had a lot of potential. (oh and what was up with that weird epilogue? it was in a different size font, and felt far too tacked on.) there are a lot of things that weren't tied up in the end. Like the talk with david or her divorce. the conflict the author tried to instill with her mother and then repair the relationship was fleshed out.
Here's what I liked: the characters are relatable and sympathetic. I liked them all. the title is great. The author has decent voice.
Overal, I shouldn't have finished this. I've ditched books for less, and this definitely fits into a DNF category, but I finished it, but don't recommend it. It just isn't a finished work. Not moving on to the next.
Ghost Mortem by Regina Welling and Erin Lynn ⭐️⭐️ I didn’t love this book, am on the fence on if I’ll give the rest of the series another chance right now. Bright side: it was a pretty quick and easy read. The series is marketed as a cozy mystery so that’s what I went into it expecting, and it really didn’t feel like that at all? The ending felt super rushed, and I felt like I didn’t actually get to anything interesting until about halfway through. I liked the main character Everly, but it didn’t feel like she ever actually did anything to solve any mystery or catch the killer so to speak. She moved back home after catching her husband cheating, lost everything, upon returning home kinda felt like she got everything magically handed to her but without any explanation of the potential magic and it was basically just chalked up to lucky breaks and coincidence. My hope is the rest of the series may provide more answers, though I can’t truthfully say I care enough to go looking for them in the immediate future.
I love these homey stries,, set in small towns always a young female lead who is having to move back home due to a bad breakup and start her life over again and especially with a bit of a paranormal edge. They don't have to be too complex with long drawn out descriptions and the mysteries are always easily solved with very little drama. I look on them a bit like palate cleansers only for my brain, a fun, easy, light read and Everly Abbott series is just the ticket. Finding out her husband has cheated on her .......with her best friend no less............Every quickly finds herself with no home, no job, no car and all her belongings in the back of a Uhaul so what's a girl to do?. This one goes home to mum and dad ...... Just one problem, they've rented out her room so there's no place for her to.stay, this sees Everly forced to stay in the Bide-A-Way motel (at least it's clean)..........not much of a welcome home and that's before the man next door to her is murdered and half the town believe she's the killer............
This is an entertaining paranormal cozy mystery series. A fun cast of characters and an entertaining storyline. Nina decides to move back home after some events that happened in the beginning of this book. You will find out once you be in reading. She moves back to the small town where she grew up in northern Maine And basically with not a lot of money and no car she plans on staying with her parents for a week until she finds an apartment and gets a job. Things aren’t going to plan though. Other things begin to happen a few things fall into place and maybe her life‘s getting ready to turn around when once again more things happen and then there’s a crime and she gets dragged into it and there may be a ghost involved at some point. It is a Entertaining and will paste the story that will keep you reading from beginning to end and wanting more. Check it out
I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 but only because I'm going to read the following books in the series and if they are better than this one, I would not be able to go any higher!
At first, this book seemed to drag but since it was the first book in a series, I let that slide and continued reading. I found the characters to be written very well, and once the ghost appeared, the book got better! I'm hoping in the subsequent books that some of the characters get fleshed out a little more and that maybe we will find out what David really wants. :)
I love Everly's mother and father and her best friend Jacy! I also liked Neena the widow of the ghost. Unfortunately, it was easy to figure out who the murderer was so that reveal was a bit anticlimatic.
I hope that Everly gets a pet/familiar in the future because that house is definitely big enough to house a cat and a dog or even 2 of each. :)
Everly catches her husband having sex with her best friend. Her husband, definitely not in running for best husband of the year, files divorce papers before she can. She can't move in with her parents so she puts a bid on for a house in her home town and manages to win it.
The house, though, is thought to be haunted. Until it's ready, though, she has to stay in a hotel and is bothered by constant sounds of two people having sex from the next room.
Things alter when a guy from that turns up dead. If that wasn't enough, it turns out that one of the guys she meets was her sweetheart in high school.
She manages to get a job (of a somewhat weird sort) and then, to make sure her life was going to get more complex, she sees the talks to the ghost of the guy that was killed in the motel.
I like the characters and the basis of the story is different enough from this genre to keep it from being boring. Really good first book in a series.
Such a fun and interesting story! I recognize that this story is a series set-up, in top of being a singular whodunnit. With that said, I really got into the backstory of the MC and soooo empathized with her. I thought the characters were well put together and gave enough in this opening story to be invested in them.
**MINOR SPOILER AHEAD** I hated that the climax literally came at the last minute, although the author did a decent job of mixing in some clues/hints throughout. Also, only spotted a couple typos — overall, editing was very good. I particularly enjoyed that this was slightly outside the typical cozy mystery set-up, and at least this book was more about a woman getting her life back on track with some potential for a love connection simmering in the background.
There’s something comforting in going back to your hometown, but sadly for Everly there’s not much comfort to be found. Her life falls apart, bit by bit. And what in the world did Everly ever see in Paul? He’s colored her world in grays while she loves colors, but she has always let him get away with graying everything. A fresh starts is what she needs. And no one is ever going to take the color out of her life ever again!
I loved this book. Easy-to-read, which requires some serious writing skills. Well-written! I couldn’t put it down. It does involve a lot of ‘new start’ and not a lot of investigating in the first half of the book, but I didn’t mind, because it was just so good. I liked the characters! (Although Everly could be a little nicer to David, the guy who inhabites her old bedroom, wink wink). It was lovely and awesome, and just very good.
I really enjoyed this book. At first, I was leaning toward a 3-star rating because the ending felt incredibly rushed and came a bit out of nowhere. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized how much I genuinely enjoyed the experience. This story pulled me out of a reading slump and completely drew me in. I absolutely loved the haunted house, small-town murder mystery vibe, it had just the right amount of cozy and suspense.
The characters were well-crafted, and I appreciated the depth the backstory added to the narrative. Even with its flaws, it kept me so hooked that I found myself eager to get back to reading whenever I had to put it down. That, to me, says it’s worth more than 3 stars. It’s a strong start to what I think could be a great series, and I’m really looking forward to seeing where it goes next.
Everly feels she's having the worst day of her life when she discovers her husband in bed with her supposedly best friend. she loses her job and car to the dissolution of her marriage. she then decides to go back home where she discovers her parents have loaned out her room to a friend soon so finds a room at the local hotel until she finds somewhere more permanent. Things go from bad to worse when she discovers a dead body in the room next to hers. The dead body belongs to Hudson, her childhood boyfriend. she gets the shock of her life when Hudson's ghost turns up and demands she discover who killed him. How will she do this? Will she find herself a jov, home and get back on her feet in this search for the murderer? Fabulous read.
First of all - I really enjoyed the naming of this book - Ghost Mortem! Hilarious! and Haunted Everly After! Just brilliant, I think we can all play around with ghostly words but this book has it just right. Who doesn't love a friendly ghost? Blimey, the one who ends up haunting Everly is scary for a whole new reason - the past. Shudder, I for one would rather be haunted by an actual ghost, yet this made for a fab storyline. As the text says 'Never, in the history of ever, has telling someone to calm down resulted in the desired effect' (quote from chapter 12) well, poor Everyly has reason to be vexed. Husband does the unthinkable, she loses her job car and home. She's all fired up and has just the right amount of tragedy in her head to be a supersleuth ghost mystery solver!
I really enjoyed the writing style of this book and felt like I could relate to Everly and her small-town family and friends. My only issue with the book is that the ending felt incredibly rushed. There was no way Everly would have figured out who the murderer was with the information she had and so when the murderer just came out and admitted to the murder, it felt forced. I think it would have been better if Everly had another few chapters to learn more about the death and gather some evidence. There were plenty of suspects, so I was disappointed when none of them panned out and were quickly dismissed based on very minimal evidence. I’ll read the next one though and see, maybe it just takes a bit for this story to come together.
I had this sitting on my Kindle for a while and it kept getting pushed further back until I had forgotten all about it. When I went to look for a story to read, this one came along and I decided to give it a try, and I'm so happy I did! There are so many books out there about girls being dumped, moving back home and getting involved in solving a murder BUT this one seemed a little different to me. I won't go into detail so I don't spoil it but I can say, I really... really enjoyed it. Everly is a very likeable character and along with her family and closest friend Jacey, I knew I had find my next series to get into. Now onto book two to see what Everly's chaotic world holds in store for her. This should be fun!
When Everly walks in on her husband and ex-best-friend in bed together, it starts the worst week of her life. She heads home to her parents, to find her childhood bedroom occupied by a lodger, and herself ousted to the local bed and breakfast. The troubles don’t finish there, as she ends up finding the dead body of her high school sweetheart- only to be haunted by his ghost asking her to find out who murdered him.
This is the first in the series, and sets up everything for the stories that follow. It’s an enjoyable paranormal cosy mystery, it is Everly’s fresh start: new home, no man, old friends… and a few new ones. It’s a quick and entertaining read for paranormal cosy fans, especially those who enjoy the small town setting.
This was a great book to read. It was easy, funny kept you emotions all over the place. Everly was a character that any woman could feel for. Having to deal with a very real situation, instead of hidjng and giving up she digs in and make a go of things. I love her strength and determination to get her life together and come out ahead. Having to deal with ghosts didn't make it any easier, but she showed her true colours. The way the story was written you could see where many more plotlines will aim to. If you like an easy read that has a good mystery, has humor and strong characters, you will thoroughly enjoy this book and any others in the future.
