Jessica Keller keeps pushing Buran back, using chaos and surprise as her weapons, as well as the warriors of First Expeditionary Fleet. When her reinforcements arrive, she pushes even harder, though honestly, it doesn't matter if she wins. She must provide adequate distraction. Why? Moirrey and friends carry a superweapon capable of killing a god, and Jessica must buy them the time to use it. Whatever the cost. Winterhome - the penultimate volume of The Jessica Keller Chronicles - takes you to the edge of the very apocalypse. Be sure to enjoy the rest of the series, starting with Auberon .

Another outstanding book by Blaze Ward!! His grasp of characters, dialog, descriptive language and excellent storytelling have moved him into my "must read" list of authors (along with Bujold, Elliott Kay, Weber, Modesitt, Lackey and others).
When I first started the Jessica Keller series it came across a bit like a knock off of the Honor Harrington books (more than a few authors have tried to emulate the Honorverse...), but I quickly discovered that the series (along with the other books in the "Alexandria Station" universe like Science Officer and others) is worthy of recognition on its own. The Keller character is not Harrington, but very much "her own person", and the universe the series is in is very well delineated through the Keller series as well as ones building up to it.
If you are into very well done military and far future scifi, very worth your time. If you haven't, I'd recommend reading the earlier series in the Alexandria Station universe before starting the Keller set, just to have a better feel for what's going on. I recommend them all.
Spoilers follow. The finale should have involved Jessica attacking Winterhome and destroying Buran, with at least a screen confrontation between them. Maybe including Summer. Instead we get a lengthy Deus ex machina, with Jessica fighting a grand but pointless action somewhere off to the side. The next book, heavily heralded in this one, is unnecessary for dramatic integrity but probably helps author income.
Having said that, Ward remains a master of character and of sliding backstory into his plots almost unnoticeably.
Overlaps with Queen Anne’s Revenge, Packmule and Persephone but the storylines merge about halfway through this book. Not as much fun as those other three but still worth rereading.
