This is surprisingly my first low rated book of the year. Now there's probably a lot of you who are going, "Autumn, we told you not to get your hopes up." or maybe something more like, "Why did you do it Malli?! Why did you read the book if you weren't going to like it?!". Well, all shall be revealed in this full on review on my reading experience with this book.
For starters let me clarify something. I was very excited and went in thinking I was going to love this book. With that being said, there were things in this book that I thought were great ideas to try. There were even a lot of things in here mentioned that I already do like bird watching. I do bird watching and I even volunteer for a raptor sanctuary. Even though there were a lot of great parts and so good ideas, I had A LOT of issues with this book. Which is an understatement because half the time, I wanted to throw this book at my wall.
My biggest issue I had with this book was repetition. Now, for some readers it doesn't bother them and for me, it usually doesn't bother me either. However, when you're repeating the same things every other page and repeating the same words (nouns, verbs, etc...) on every other page...I have a HUGE problem with it. Now this wouldn't bother me so much if it was broken up or if same activities weren't repeated. But when every other page you're telling me I need to get outside to get some fresh air or you're telling me I need to rearrange the inside of my house every other page, but you think you're being sneaky by wording the title of that activity a little differently, I'm going to have a problem with the book. To me, if an author is continuously using the same activities to fill up page this makes me think of two things: One; you did no research at all and basically ran out of material to fill up your book so you're using same activities as filler. Two, you don't know what it means to proof reread your work and truly ask yourself "Am I giving good quality content right here?" or "Am I providing enough variety for my readers?" I don't understand why these weren't questions asked after your drafts were finished. To me, all of this screams poor research and poor quality content. Which is concerning since there were books written for each zodiac. What's also concerning is the author is suppose to be someone with twenty-five years of experience in astrology so with all that experience, there should be no reason why things are being repeated and why activities are being repeated every other page. There's no excuse.
Another thing I had issues with is how people under the Gemini sign are addressed in this book. Now, I have no problem when the reader is referred to as Gemini or Geminis. My biggest issue is with the constant referral that the reader is referred to as he or him. Considering this book is a new release, I'm surprised that author chose to be gender specific. It's one thing if the mythology is being referenced, but considering this is supposed to be a self-care book for the reader under the Gemini sign, I was very surprised that there wasn't a mix of he/she or her/him being referenced. The fact that Gemini and he/him is referenced SO MUCH, it's bothersome. It's not too big an issue, but it would have been nicer to see a little more word diversity. I find that as a female reader, it makes me feel drawn to a self-care book if my gender is referenced. I find that when I book becomes very gender specific, I'm not as drawn or feel a desire to continue reading the book. So this is something that could be changed in future books.
Another thing that definitely could have been done is have the activities broken into sections. Prime example, things to try at home, things to do outdoor, etc... These are great ways to break up activities and allow for easier referencing instead of forcing the reader to try and relocate the specific things they wanted to try. This is something that could have been added to provide more navigation for readers. It's something super simple, but it can make a difference for readers.
All in all, this wasn't the greatest book. In fact, there were small parts in which I enjoyed. However, I feel like there were major parts of this book that could have been improved upon before getting published. Going into this book with an opened mind and interest only for it to be a shattered mirror with repetition and having the book become gender specific killed any sense of enjoyment or interest in this book. It also makes me worried because I gifted two other books from this zodiac collection to family members. So I'm concerned on how they will feel about these books. I wouldn't recommend this book just based off my own experience, but if you find yourself picking this book anyway then please take what I say with a gain of salt because this is just my opinion and experience. For me, this book was a complete failure.
Better then expected. Very light, but it present a bit of the basis of the astrology and then present a list of self-care «activities» that you can do. i would be curious to compare this one with one for another sign to see how much different and specific from sign to sign this really is, but the self-care routine are good, some better then others obviously, but still a good bunch of things to do to let go, relax and take some time for yourself, and just for that, I think it could be helpful for some, even if you don't believe in astrology that much (I'm interest in it, but maybe not the biggest believer of the lot and I still enjoy and find some use of this book).
Read for a friend with significant Gemini placements. A light read, full of little self-care activities catered to a “Gemini” personality. I would love to read the entire series, which has different ideas for all of the signs. Many of the activities in this book are things anyone would enjoy. I particularly liked “put your colored pencils in a vase,” “hang eucalyptus in your shower” and “look at clouds.” Occasionally repetitive but overall very cute and straightforward.
Some of these Gemini characteristics are nail. on. the. head. And other things this says about me as a Gemini are wildly off but that's how these type of generalized books for people born in a certain date range are. Took away a few lil morsels tho still. Found there were some duplicate recommendations just phrased differently which was a little odd but I guess just reiterating it all. Had a fun, quick time reading through this.
Let me preface this by saying I don't follow or put stock in astrology and that I only somewhat connect with things I have read or heard about typical Geminis so I wasn't sure how this would go but it's short, the audio was free on scribd and it's a great time to be thinking about self care so I figured I'd give it a go.
I wasn't interested in some of the content, not being a follower of astrology but I did surprisingly find that almost all of the activities or suggestions mentioned were things that I have really enjoyed, would naturally gravitate towards or can see myself really enjoying. A few examples were swimming, always trying to make sure that you have fresh and clean air, enjoying music when stressed (especially with vocal harmony), reading books + discussing them, making lists for things, keeping your hands busy to improve concentration and using colour to organize things.
Unfortunately I did find that there was A LOT of repetition throughout and that the order of ideas presented is very disorganized! Often, you'll have an activity relating to a certain area then a whole bunch of other activities and then one that strongly relates back to the original area. This could have been summarized and organized so much more nicely! It also makes me wonder if the author is just separating some ideas to have more filler content which is discouraging!
Overall, I didn't get very many new ideas but I did get a sense of wow...this book kind of gets my likes and dislikes, maybe I am more of a typical Gemini than I thought?! xD
Getting into astrology has been one of my 2021 pet projects with my bestie and we found out I have notable Gemini placements so you know I had to get a book about it! This book is for the third sign in the zodiac (first air sign, thank you very much) but is a part of a twelve set. Each book follows the same format and is split into three key parts: 1) it defines self-care, 2) breaks down the specific sign and the signs associations and 3) the actual self-care activities.
Now onto the actual Gemini fun! I thought this was adorable and exactly what I wanted. I loved learning about the myth-history and other associations around Gemini. For example, Gemini’s sign is the twins therefore the body parts associated with this sign in particular are doubles i.e. the hands, shoulders, and lungs. As for the rituals and activities, I thought they were fun and cute. They relate to both Gemini and to air sign oriented activities. Below are a few I’m hoping to implement into my routine soon. They do get repetitive but I didn’t mind. I gave this a five out of five stars and would recommend to anyone getting into astrology.
Disclaimer: Obviously astrology is meant to be fun so anyone can use these tips for their self care. You don’t have to be a Gemini to love/need fresh air, enjoy some popcorn or any of the other activities. You do you!
This one is a bit interesting because I have mars in gemini in my birth chart so it relates to me in a way. This one has given me some new ideas as well how to improve myself giving me new perspective how to do things
