The Devilish Divas Series To Hell in a Coach Bag Damned if I Do The Devil You Know Satan, Line One Pitchfork in the Road
About the Author: Bestselling author M.J. Schiller is a retired lunch lady/romance-romantic suspense writer. She enjoys writing novels whose characters include rock stars, desert princes, teachers, futuristic Knights, construction workers, cops, and a wide variety of others. In her mind everybody has a romance.
She is the mother of a twenty-three-year-old and three twenty-one-year-olds--that's right, triplets! So having recently taught four children to drive, she likes to escape from life on occasion by pretending to be a rock star at karaoke. However…you won’t be seeing her name on any record labels soon.
I was born in Overland Park, KS, in the heart of Tornado Alley, and my life has been a bit twisted since. Actually, it’s not all that twisted, but I’ve always wanted to use that line. I grew up in St. Louis, MO, went to school at the University of Missouri-Columbia, and moved to Bloomington, IL, fresh out of college, after my husband got a job at State Farm’s corporate headquarters. I’ve worked as a high school/junior college teacher, personnel recruiter, office manager of a jewelry store, and, for the past ten years, as a lunch lady. I like to karaoke and attend rock concerts. I am actively involved at church and spend too much time on Facebook. I am the mother of a eighteen-year-old, and sixteen-year-old triplets, and have been married to my husband, Don, for over twenty-four years. I have been a writer all my life. My first book, which was co-written with Mary Ellen Murphey in second grade, was titled The Black Cat, and was written on blue hotel stationary, hole-punched, and bound by white yarn. I believe it is currently out of circulation. When I turned forty, I had an epiphany of sorts. I realized those bigwig publishing houses in New York were now probably run by people younger than me, so I shouldn’t be intimidated by them. At about the same time I was watching one of those award shows, and Jaclyn Smith got up to give a post-humorous award to Aaron Spelling. She credited him for encouraging her to go into acting, saying something brilliant like, “Reach for your dreams.” Nothing new. Almost even seems a little Jiminy Cricketish. But, for some reason, it struck me that night. When Aaron Spelling was thirteen, he was probably just like any other acned thirteen-year-old. But he worked to achieve his dreams, and became a household name. So, I began to write. Once I finished my first book, I wasn’t able to stop. I would rather write than do just about anything else. After all, you get to make people (characters) do what you want and design your own happy endings. What power! What a privilege.
Having previously read and reviewed all three of these books, I am so glad that they have come out in one happy, laugh-filled volume. To Hell in a Coach Bag: I really enjoyed the story, which has distant echoes of Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood. I loved the odd friendship between Sam and Dani and their crazy antics, as well as the safety net provided by Maxine and Alexis. All four women are handling their own heartache as best they can, but Dani is the most vulnerable of them all. The road trip to Denver to attend the funeral of Dani’s father is something of a catalyst for each of the women. Kyle and Tucker enter the story as secondary characters, but I would really have liked to know that there was some hope for them in the future. Damned If I Do: The Lunch Ladies continue to stand together and Dani and Sam in particular continue their wacky, music infused friendship. As a widow Dani is getting ready to move on and consider a new relationship, but still has feelings of guilt regarding her marriage vows. By becoming involved with Tucker, it means melding two families together with the resulting complications. Sam on the other hand is fighting her attraction to Kyle because she refuses to commit herself to another man who may cheat on her the way her ex did. His introduction to her children is less than stellar, but due to an unforeseen accident, Kyle gets closer to her family than she anticipated. I loved all the characters in this book, including the children and the two romances between Dani and Tucker, as well as Sam and Kyle are heart-warming with both moments of hilarity as well as sadness. The Devil You Know: I enjoyed catching up with the ladies, in particular, Dani and Sam with their easy wit and love of music. Dani is married with a baby on the way, and Sam is getting married, however the obstacles in her path threaten to blow the wedding apart. It takes creative thinking to put things together again. Much of this story focuses on Zoe and Zack's developing attraction with all the ups and downs that come with youthful relationships, some of which are potentially very serious. However, the younger son Scott applies his genius, not without causing some concern to his dad. As usual, the wit and humour surrounding this extended patchwork family group are most enjoyable. I particularly laughed at Sam rolling her eyes and - “if arms could be raised sarcastically, she raised them sarcastically.” As with other books in this series, tragedy is mixed in with the humour as the friends find their feet in their new relationships. I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily post this review. This is my honest review.
The trio of the Devilish Divas are well written and the characters are well thought out and consistent throughout all three books. The author addresses many true to life issues in a realistic manner but even the worst of topics she finds appropriate humor. Really enjoyed the books.
