Introducing Jarrod Black by Texi Smith is an interesting insight into the life of professional football player Jarrod Black. He is a devoted family man, passionate about those he loves and the sport for which he lives. Present and past tense tease the reader as we discover how he ends up far from home and his discoveries. As he matures through the story, leading us to his current dilemma, we realise how Jarrod has been influenced by those around him and also how he shapes the relationships he forms. This exciting first novel shows the inside workings of English football clubs and players' professional lives that are shaped and controlled by their clubs. Expect more of Jarrod's adventures from this new author.

In this thoroughly engaging and entirely accessible tale, there is something for everyone. Whether football (or sport for that matter) has been something you've grown up with directly or indirectly, there's a human side to this story that takes ahold beyond the beautiful game. Drawing on both his wider knowledge and, undoubtedly, relevant experiences of his own, author Texi Smith's writing style nurtures an effortless bond with, not least, the central character, bringing a global game to everyday life. With that, and more, in mind, I eagerly look forward to reading the sequel.

While my own soccer career ended at U16, I was captivated by Jarrod’s adventures in England. I enjoyed going along for the ride as he found his feet both in football and as an adult.
The book kept me up turning the pages, with writing that demonstrated skill at describing the game of football, as well as the development of relatable characters. Looking forward to starting the follow up book... Jarrod Black - Hospital Pass. Give it a go !
