A well-told story!

Hardie pens a really good story in The Altered. It's listed as a sequel in a series, namely book 2 in "Them" series. I don't feel like I've missed anything by not reading the first book, "Them" but that seems like a book I'd also want to read. This is the first work of Hardie's I've read, and it was a read that I could keep up with. I liked how the plot unfolded, and it had many different dimensions. It's an exciting story with great characters, though my favorite was Joshua. I think the characters develop throughout the story, as they need to deal with all the obstacles they face, especially in this new world. There is something about this story that makes a reader like me take notice, and I enjoyed it. I'm sure Hardie has a lot more stories that I'd like to read. I look forward to reading more by this author.

I received this book for free through Voracious Readers Only.

The System, an advanced computer program, runs all of human civilisation. It controls everything, from dreams to terrorism and business.
The Otherworlders, or "Them", are invisible beings from a parallel universe Earth, they cause natural disasters with the purpose of destroying humanity - because humanity's nuclear testing has infested their Earth with radiation and made it nearly unlivable.
Devon Heathrow is an Altered, a human with superpowers. He lives outside the System and can see the Otherworlders.

The Altered is a grimdark dystopian story about the formation of a team of vigilantes.
Devon is all kinds of messed up, a lonely dark anti-hero who talks to himself and misses his family, he is pretty much dead inside and prone to random outbursts of violence. Equipped with high tech spy gear, he lives a life outside of society chasing Them despite his inability to fight Them.
He enlists his best friend Joshua and his ex-girlfriend Gina, Altering them too, and there is a lot of in-fighting as they all slowly develop their Altered abilities.

The writing style is sloppy, at times incoherent. Correct grammar is rare. Huge infodumps introduce the world and characters, and continue to introduce them throughout the book, over and over again.
It was hard to connect with the characters, as their behaviour is incoherent and random.
There is so much aimless violence and murder and endless conversations about how horrible humankind is, it quickly became depressing to read.

The Altered will be perfect for fans of the grimdark genre, vigilantes, supervillains, and dystopias.
But I did not like it personally because I was expecting a science fiction story, which this is not.

Be aware this is part of a series. You can read this without having read book one as past events are explained, but it might be better when read in order.

“The Altered by MG Hardie has an engaging premise and kept me interested throughout. It is a very smart, interesting book that gave me a lot of things to contemplate. I really like the interesting fusion of the sci-fi and superhero genres and found this particularly effective.”- Steven Mitchell
