The beginning part about how to dream journal was helpful but the "dictionary" is unorganized and lists very specific dream scenarios such as "seeing a butterfly at a funeral" or "maggots in fruit at the farmers market". Thank you?
While the book is --gorgeous-- and there is some interesting content, it is not what I was expecting. Some of the stories given for further explanation seem apocryphal. Perhaps it's just not what I was looking for. The dream reference guides are not as broad as I had hoped. For example: I have a recurring animal in my dreams and I had thought that this book would address it, but the animal section focused mainly on being attacked or stalked by animals.
Perhaps this just wasn't the resource I needed, but it did feel as if it didn't fit the synopsis as well as it could have.
The first part of this book is interesting as it talks about the history of the human race discovering their dreams and recording them. After that, unless you have dreamt the very specific examples of dreams the book provides, it's not as useful as it appears from the cover that states "unlock inner wisdom discover meaning and refocus your life". I wasn't able to discover the meaning of any of my dreams.
This is one of the better books on this topic that I got a chance to read. It does not try to make dream interpretation somewhat a psychic matter. It does provide different beliefs and perspectives of dream reading and the psychologists that contributed to the scientific foundation of dream interpretation. The book also guides you on how to record more details of your dreams by asking the right questions and even to continue it with your imagination. It has plenty of illustration which makes the book more pleasant to read. The case studies in every few pages are also helpful. I wished it was a little more details on each symbols and topics.
This book has strong fortune-telling elements, such as stories related to dreams and dream diagnosis. The illustrations are tender and nice, but I thought the content lacked credibility for a DK book.
There is no scientific basis for “Dream Diagnosis,'' which involves reading the psychology of people, places, and actions that appear in dreams.
A light reading with delightful illustrations. I scrolled through the PDF version in half an hour, particularly because I already have a deep knowledge on the topic of the subconsious and dreaming. But this book is a wonderful introduction for a beginner in this theme, I think.
I personally enjoyed illustrations the most, I loved designer's decisions, an aesthetics of color palette and a subtle play of a typed text with pictures. A cute source of inspiration for visual artists, I believe. Calm, gentle, coherent, attractive pictures with well structured words.
If youre looking for a complete dream dictionary, this isn't it. But it's a really pretty book and I like that it explores the idea that dream meanings are not objective - it can vary depending on your own life experiences. A lot of books will tell you straight up "if you dream about x, it's because y" and it's obviously not that simple. This book has good information on dream theory and learning to interpret your own dreams.
I was fascinated by the "dream directory " in this book. It takes the reader into different dream descriptions and winds each up with a possible interpretation of the dream. I found the interpretations to be focused on extracting meaning and value for the dreamer in-flesh in the Now. I will keep coming back to this book as I restart a process of writing and recording my dreams down and re-regard them as sacred and symbolic.
I found this beautiful, substantial book on the New Nonfiction shelf at my library. It’s lovely. In case I ever dream about cats or rainbows or trains, (??? we’re in America), I know where to turn. Why I keep dreaming that I cannot successfully send a slice of pizza as a fax, that’s going to have to wait until the second edition, I guess.
It's a little too mystic for me. I'd rather marry mysticism and psychology. I mean, medicine started out "there's ghosts in your blood. Do some cocaine about it." and evolved into "we're going to micro dose you with meth so you can breathe while you fight off the common cold." ~Digression~ Wasn't helpful, wasn't useful. You'd probably be better off using Google but if it helps you, great!
The beginning was quite promising, but the whole concept of dream guide completely spoiled - the dreams presented here are very specific and although I respect the author being an experienced therapist, I can't not feel her brief, concrete, everything-will-be-alright advice a little irritating. A bit of a disappointment, really.
some base-level dream theology at the start followed by extremely specific dream signs throughout. found it very unnecessary to read about symbols that i hadn’t experienced (which were a lot because most were quite niche) but found the descriptions to be vague, open-ended and not saying much in explaining the ‘why’ of recurring dream signs.
I was expecting a deep, insightful guide based on it's title. It's more life a beginner's book on the topic. The section on dream journal provides a structured guide. This section is practical, and actionable.
I love the illustrations, but wasn't impressed with thy book overall. Not quite what I thought it would be, wouldn't recommend, as I feel there are better books on the topic
Fine as a basic intro to dreams. The journal for me doesn’t cover enough but then I’ve been dream journaling for a while and have expanded my practice quite a bit.
A very general overview about what dreams are and some either very specific or very general themes and interpretations for them. Not incredibly helpful if you're trying to learn more about specific dreams you're having, but it's good as an introduction to dreams and dream interpretation.
Not to mention the illustrations are beautiful. This would be a good coffee table book or intro for someone who doesn't know much about dreams
