Jessica is a good girl that really likes to follow the rules and care about her grades.
Suddenly one day She meets 2 guys that arrive at her home for her help and they tell her she is a witch and her family has lied to her all of her life. She has a very powerful grandma that explains things to her and she decides to help the guys that are investigating the apparition of a lot of demons by entering high school
This book is ridiculous. Some of The things are so badly explained (or not at all) that is makes no sense.

The guys going into high school was so idiotic. Chase looks old, but is a professor of magic. But he is still weak enough that he doesn't have a familiar a needs help from an old lady and a teen. And the old lady doesn't even help them, she just comments what they said. And somehow, he needs to go to high school, but they never explain why. If he needed help smelling the demonic aura of people he could've gone for the church's help, or pass as a reporter, I don't know, but a 27 year old guy going to high school and doesn't even know what is physics, it's stupid and makes no sense.

The book never says what the other guy does and he just disappears to investigate stuff nobody knows about. If you wanted to maintain mystery around him it was badly done, because I really don't care for a character that hasn't done anything for the plot.
The author could've put Roger in high school and Chase investigating the stuff that needed The other one to not be at high school, but yeah, we need a dialogue saying how awful high school bullies are.

the "villains" are stupid, they behave stupidly and even they realize that, but the author still thinks that having a crappy reason is good for bullying and cursing. They want to not be looked as witches, so they blame Jessica for being a witch... Or... you could not talk about witches at all and nobody would care. Also they curse Jessica with an imp because she has the new guy around her. What. That "girls need to be catty with each other because of boys" plot is beyond dumb and even is more dumb the curse they give her. They could've send her some spell to make her look ugly or embarrass herself. But no, they a wanted to prank her so she would think she was crazy and then the guy would leave her. As a decent human being if I heard that someone is being pranked I would take even more care of her, or if I think that she is crazy, I would get her help. Not simply leave her to be with the next hot girl. Also the plan is so long term it would take months for someone to think she is really crazy.

Jessica I actually liked that she was able to defeat magical stuff without magic. A book and a ruler are such funny weapons, I enjoyed the dialogues were she explained that all of the things that attacked her were dead. It was just annoying the "omg you are such a powerful witch, you defeated those things without no training" but she never used magic to defeat them. She could just be a good Hunter, a good fighter, whatever, without no magic.
I did find disappointing that this book is about magic and demons, but they appear very rarely. They focus more on her defeating an imp, her realizing the guys are stupid in high school, her explaining how cold her car is (when it is not relevant for the plot), how crazy her grandma is, etc. Never do we see actual decent magic appear an if it does you can count it with one hand.

Th plot is meh, the characters are meh, nothing is super interesting and the development is stupid. Her not caring for her grades all of the sudden was such a drastic change, I really didn't find it realistic. I only like that she wasn't given a love story with anyone, and the book stayed relatively consistent with how her reactions are to her discoveries.

When I saw this book on offer I wanted to give it a go as I was intrigued by the title and the front cover caught my eye.
It did leave me with questions though.
1. If Gloria is the reason for the demons to get back at Jessica, where did the first few come from since the story and the plot had not started then?
2. How did Chad go from dead police officers to needing to be enrolled in a school?
3. What was Roger's lead, surely Chad would know as his mentor but Roger does not want to tell in fear of jinxing it? (Maybe Roger is up to something! That would be intriguing).

However I did like the plot. Having petty teenage girls loose with spells was quite fun, causing problems with an imp.
I loved Ethel and Pastor Norman, excellent characters that made me laugh. The water gun was especially brilliant.
It did flow well and although it left me with questions that can only be a good thing to keep the reader wanting to continue.
I would say it is worth the read, overall a very good book.

A good, T&YA coming-of-age fantasy. Or, at least, a good introduction to the cast and setting. After some cops die of fright in the local cemetery, Chad enlists Jessica and her grandmother to investigate the demons' origin. Unfortunately, Jessica's parents had hidden her heritage. Thus, she's an untrained witch. Things go from bad to worse with no end in sight.

This title is reminiscent of an RPG (role-playing game). A character starts out with little to no abilities and, through experience, grows more and more competent. However, there is rarely any ultimate goal or none shared with the reader. This story follows the same pattern evidenced by looking ahead at later titles. This title has plenty of action but fails to come to any resolution: not even a clear indication of direction. Entertaining but unsatisfying.

Action-packed. Easy-to-read. Entertaining. Great world building. Scary. Tragic. Twisted. Unpredictable. Whimsical. Wonderful characters.

In the beginning ...

This seems like a great series, but it seems to start off not at the beginning but at chapter4 and the ending is??? Not a book that has an ending at all. Girl finds out she is from a strong witch family after she is about to graduate public school even though she is supposedly smart. Her grandmother and mother are witches though her mother doesn't "practice" the craft. Now she has demons after her that she whips because she is "special". But they are really after her cause her grandmother has a jealous rival. But no one in the story ever learns this and it ends just as things start to wind down
I am afraid to get the next book as I don't know if it will pick up or just go to another tale.

Okay, 54%. That means I have this book a fair shot. I have over 1,000 books in my kindle library and another few dozen paperbacks on my shelves. I don't know when I purchased this book, but it doesn't fit my current style. It hops between characters as the omniscient narrator and gives both passive and active voice. It has a fake romance, demons, witches, and what is essentially a teen angst squabble. I can tell you I would have devoured this book as a young teen in middle school. As a college student and (unfortunately) adult, it is lack luster for me so I am putting this one down and moving onto the next. If you are under 17 or just getting your feet wet in the fantasy/supernatural world give it a go, it's a great place to start.

A bit scarier than I normally read about a young girl age 17 who's grandmother is a powerful witch and who's mother is a non practicing witch have a very powerful witch's coven attempting to kill the grandmother and the granddaughter. The granddaughter has some unseen powerful talent when it comes to fighting demons but another coven and the daughters of the witches of this coven are out to kill her. Problem is this is book one and really cannot be read alone! I guess that is one way to sell more books!

School was never like this!

JESSICA is just trying to get thru this year's school. Two cops have died in the local graveyard. It looks like they died of fright. What on earth would be that frightening? Maybe something that didn't come from earth? Then a gorgeous guy shows up at her house and tells he she's a witch. A witch????? Read on to find out what is frightening people to death!

A very fun read. A high school girl finds out that she is a witch, even though others knew of her heritage. She discovers, without training, that she really can fight demons and imps.

Life with Grandma is good, but takes on a whole different meaning when she discovers that Grandma is really one of the most powerful witches around.

Pure Enjoyment Entertainment!

Similar in some regards as "The Twilight" series in that reader's doubts of reality are addressed in almost believable ways as the fight between good and evil play out! The mixture of lovable and hateful characters, with a few "normal", make this one of the most enjoyable reads ever!

Fresh new story

A good read with believable characters who aren’t perfect. Jessica is a likeable character, and one who doesn’t have it all together but who is brave and courageous. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and can’t wait for book #2 to be released.

Continuity issues

Continuity issues with some of the scene changes.
Shows up at arch-nemsis in bloody clothes, no mention of change or ideation at parents or grandmother's.

Character intro was a stiff.

Can only get better

Not real good but there is some talent in this author. Characters and the dialog need to improve. There is no way anyone can dispatch 3 major demons with a ruler. The three stars was generous. Michael needed to read this before it went out.

Cute series!

Quite the crazy start to this series!
I always love stories that go right from the fryer into the fire!
Will she stay at mundane school or start magical training?
Very cool!

Awesome read!

Loved this book. Unlike books about Good Witches, especially with no bad language. A little isn’t a problem but none of the bad, bad words😉 I would recommend this book to all my reader friends! Great job Hayley Lawson!

Loved it

Lots of action from beginning to end. Learning something new is not always a good thing but learning something you have naturally is good. Love this start, fighting evil.

I read this over half way through and still wasn't impressed. The storyline is fine, the characters are fine.....just fine. This book is meant for pre teen young adults.

A nice read about a teenager who finds out she comes from a long line of witches. It all began with demon attacks and mean girls.

Could be good

Interesting story, could really be a good one to develop. Cannot wait to see what happens next. Looks like a granny fight is on the books too.

After 4 chapters, I’ve decided to put it down. Just couldn’t get into it. The story seems interesting enough, but I can’t get passed the writing style. Not for me

Cute story. Lacked character development to the MC. I liked the grandmother and the Priest dude. The plot was weak but the author managed to drop a little intrigue in the end.

Truthfully I would say go ahead and skip this series.

Honestly I find it terrible. The concept is cool but the writing is weak. The main character is not likeable, she comes off dumb and takes too long to figure anything out. The dialouge seems forced (I'm sorry but what 27 year old man would say "rude much?"?) And the revelations are done terribly. Jessica is basically like, okay I'm a which, confusing and stressful but okay. And then she finds out her arch enemies are witches and, doesn't even care? Everyone just acts like its totally normal that this high school is full of witches?

Its very basic, very cliche and very childish. I'm not even sure if I want to finish the trilogy.

Jessica is a High school student, who suddenly finds out that she is a witch. She gets involved in Adventures fighting evil spirits, with 2 demon hunters who have come as a result of 2 policemen dying in the graveyard. Great characters couple with a really enjoyable story line make this a worthwhile read
