Academy of Assassins meets The Selection.
Protector was not a bad book; it had magic, action, romance, friendship, fallen queens and handsome kings, a solid plot and a bit of mystery. Cliche but effective, everything needed for an engrossing fantasy book.
But I would not consider it good.
+ The world building.
The key to a great fantasy book is the extensive world building which is not there here. When it comes to magic, dark dimensions and non documented demons, readers need the author to draw them a picture. The world of Protector had makeup, magazines, running water, cars and cargo pants. But it also had only swords, balls and no high technology, making me unable to grasp the setting.
+ The characters.
The characters were not particularly fleshed out but they weren't bad characters. They felt more like pawns, making an appearance only when Isadora's story needed them to be there; no character really existed without her -like when her best friend disappeared for a third of the book.
But the characters were fleshed enough to make me expect things of them; dignity, pride, wealth, authority, ... and not a remake of the Breakfast Club. The Kings lacked presence and the witches were basic petty hindrance.
+ The writing.
The number of 'babe' and 'girl' used was overly ridiculous and so not appropriate in most situations. A King that called a woman 'babe' in public. A cook that called a potential Queen 'girl'. A Headmistress calling her student 'girl'. Her woman calling another woman that wanted to tear her apart 'babe'. All pet names were not only used in an endearing way but also sarcastically and the result was kind of obnoxious and so numerous they basically became punctuation on their own.
Protector could also have been shortened a bit. As a first book, it lacked confidence and sometimes ended up being quite repetitive.
Overall, Protector did pretty good for a debut and has everything needed to get better. And as a first step, a development both on the characters and the universe would improve everything greatly.

I may often rate a book with one star. (I do know I'm a nit picking reader, sorry) But rarely I go on a heavy handed rant.
This is one of those times.
Pure, unadulterated trash.
Awfully written, awfully thought, and awfully delivered. It's the author's personal (half-sexual) fantasy and should have remained well closed in her head or trunk.
There is really nothing good in this, and for once I don't think it's a personal issue. No world building, no plot (where plot is a woven piece of threads that forms an image, here you have someone's garbage disposal exploding), no characters (again where characters are something different than words on a page), everything moves on the author's wishes and not on its steam. Calling a Mary Sue is being extremely nice.

Nothing makes sense and everything happens because the heroine is the only thing that matters (so conveniently her rival and bf is lesbian, she can fight people who are way older and more experienced and win, she's the strongest without practicing, she doesn't have to follow protocols, she can do anything ...) Could definitely leave this series without another thought
I struggled to get through this but have sworn off DNFing books for the next month so here we are.
I found the writing extremely rudimentary - something that someone in high school would play with.
The plot is trope heavy - starts off in school, carries on like The Selection and who knows what it will develop into come second book. Don’t get me wrong - there are current trendy tropes that I’m selling my soul to get more of but what Protector is selling, I’m not buying. I found the plot unrealistic and wasn’t able to connect with any of the characters so even they were unable to save it for me. She grows up her entire life following her Grandmother’s wish of keeping quiet about her heritage and in a hot week (less than? The pacing was off in this) and blows it all to smithereens and barely.blinks.an.eye. What?! And what is the end game to begin with? First it was to remain a no one and go back home, then it was to help friend become selected to be one of four Queens to escape an arranged marriage and help beat the bad guys (Dark Worlders...?), but now her friend is a lesbian and she’s suddenly in love with four guys she’s only just met so now she needs to help with the gate or...? So many questions.
As I said previously, the writing itself was elementary. Quite a few (a lot) paragraphs were only paragraphs because the author kept repeating the same sentence or idea but differently with each passing sentence. As such, this entire novel probably could’ve been halved. Author also needs to either not self edit, or hire a better editor. The sentence structure and grammar errors were e x t r e m e l y distracting.
Characters weren’t really fleshed out. I feel like I still know nothing about the Four Kings save for a couple of sad stories for a couple of them. And the characters don’t exist without the main protagonist, which makes zero sense when the author delved into some of the Kings’ POVs. The “sisterly” bond wasn’t believable and the Four Kings roles as Kings were also not believable.
I didn’t find that any of her relationships held any depth. All the romance fell flat.
However, was intrigued slightly by Tiran but not enough to want to carry on the series.
I’m honestly stunned that the ratings are so high on this one.

I’m...speechless?
Written by Russian bots?
Everything about this book is awful. The heroine - juvenile, awful dialogue, her internal monologues/ thoughts sound as though they were extracted from a 13 year old’s day dreams.
The plot - has potential
I can’t get over the dialogue. The dialogue is definitely not for a matUre audience but then there is also extremely adult content at the same time. It makes no sense. Overall, an awfully written book.

I absolutely loved this book! Isa is such a strong character. I lived for her awesome fights and smart mouth comments. Her men are definitely not what you expect! The story of her past had me on the edge of my seat and gollowing all the twist and turns. I can't wait for the next in the series! The author did such an amazing job.

Started off good but quickly lost stars because of the heroines attitude. I like a strong heroine but I don't like one who comes off as a know it all. She hasn't practiced magic since she was 8 but the second she starts again (12 yrs later) she's a master at it - can do stuff that NO OTHER MAGIC USER CAN DO! Add that to the fact that she goes from a protector student to kicking the "Chiefs" butt AND was all high and mighty about it - questioning WHY someone at his skill level would be allowed to protect the Kings - and she became highly unlikeable. Even when she got schooled about different things it didn't bring her down a level, I don't even think she apologized. She just went on thinking she was the cat's meow.
As stated in other reviews, the Kings were not distinguishable at all. In fact I don't think the author could even distinguish them sometimes. They would all be in a conversation and the next like would be "and then he yelled"...well, who yelled? There's four guys around you right now and you can't tell me who raised his voice? Am I suppose to know who it was...because I don't... This happened multiple times.
The last thing I'm going to point out - and to some its not an issue but it became bothersome to me the longer it went on...and IT WENT ON THE WHOLE BOOK! The heroines relationship with her best friend was too much for me. It got to a point where I really started to wonder if the best friend was going to be in the harem...its on that level of intimacy. Everything the heroine does is for the best friend. Exposes herself to save the best friend - check. Goes to the castle (which she went on and on and on about NEVER doing) to save the best friend - check. Stays in the castle to protect the best friend - check. Allows the Kings to tell everyone who she is in order to protect the best friend - check. And of course...the book ends with the heroine having to go to the other realm (I honestly can't remember what its called) to save the best friend.
You'd think the best friend was helpless and NOT the second most powerful witch of the school...
Ultimately it wasn't win for me and I won't bother picking up the next book.

Decent
I liked this book. It’s a great concept and the notions behind the world in which they live got my imagination roaring. That said, I was still a bit disappointed in the execution of said amazing plot. It suffered from more “tell” than “show”, bogging down the narrative with long winded explanations that could have been better served spread out or eliminated in favor of dialogue or action.
Slow burn for harem, medium for individual. MMMMF(M?) Cliffhanger
Pros:
- Intriguing world building.
- The idea behind the tale is fantastic.
- Some parts flow very well.
- The twist at the end is quite enjoyable and will mix up the way book 2 progresses.
- Honest female friendships, rare in RH.
Cons:
- tell vs. show.
- FMC comes off as cocky, impulsive and demeaning, rather than strong and self assured.
- The Kings Lack individuality
- A bit confused on world building: obviously different world or dimension, more fantasy, yet there is a mention of a TV and reference to men in black? No background.

I loved this story, Isadora is an awesome heroine and her guy's are all different (but equally sexy! ) there's a few mysteries here and they don't all get resolved but in a good way, let me keep reading kind of way. The world building was fantastic and epic and well set up for future books. I had been in a real book slump but powered through this in a day and really couldn't put it down. Smallest of niggles around some conversations in the book not flowing naturally BUT it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the book. I can't wait to see what Serena Nova does next

3.5 ish stars rounded up, I fell into this story right out the gate. Picked it up off Audible and listened to the narration which, I thought, was great. Fast paced, plenty of action, Bad A female that doesn't do what she is told. Yep I was sucked right in lol. Character wise I'm not sure really how rounded we have gotten. I don't honestly feel like we have gotten to know everyone including our FMC really well yet in this first book hopefully this will improve as the series continues.. Slow reveals on the backstory and world building which really usually puts me off a story but honestly I didn't have any problem staying involved. I think most of the problem comes from us learning everything as the FMC does, which doesn't make much sense considering she has lived in this world since birth. There is also this constant threat that we know about but for some reason can't seem to make anything happen in regards to it, which is a little on the irritating side. I was also wishing during the book for a whole lot more explanation in regard to the magical concepts. Setting clear parameters when it comes to the abilities gives us as readers an idea of what the characters might be capable of and also allows us to rejoice or celebrate when they break through said barriers. Without those we are kind of shooting in the dark.
Isadora our FMC is the token bad A, keeping her gifts as a full blood witch hidden because she will be hunted by her families enemies. Enemies that in a play for power murdered her ancestors and took the throne. She has disguised her self as a protector but as such and in doing her job and protecting her witch friends she sets of a chain of events leading her straight to the palace to compete against other witches for the chance to marry the kings.. The kings who's families betrayed her own.. but she can't help but be drawn to...
I'm really interested to see where this is headed. Especially with the relationships not being quite developed at this point. I do feel like the male harem characters have different and distinct personalities so I feel like this series is sitting on some great potential.

Serena Nova; Discovered Author 2019 - not sure if this is a new author on the scene or what but my first impression is amazing!
Protector is a medium burn paranormal RH and the first in its series. It has a kind of ‘Selection’ (from Keira Cass) vibe to it obviously with a twist given the paranormal content.
Isa is the last Full Blood Savil; Royality. But she was sworn to secrecy by her grandmother lest she forfeit her life. Alas weeks before graduating she tells her best friend Astra what she is. All those years training as a Protector rather than a witch was to keep her identity concealed. When Astras life is put in jeopardy Isa risks that sanctity to safe her, this also meant that she was volunteered to join the Selection process to find the next Queen. If things could get any worse Isa is instantly attracted to the Kings and they with her. She turns their world upside down from the minute she meets them but as all love stories go they will do anything to ensure her safety and that of her friends and family.
Obviously as Isa is falling in love the kings have a job to also figure out how to close the gate that is allowing darkness in to their world, what they don’t know is that there is a conspiracy within the other houses brewing to keep the gate open. Why? We are to find out, but they have the best person trying to uncover the truth.
Look I like the story I think the characters really fit the plot and I can’t wait for the next one.

Wow, I'm pretty impressed with this book... It was so much better than I expected... Kudos Serena with a job well done. I'm quite "the"satisfied customer from the beginning to the end. Damn, it's just something about a badass heroine that gets the blood pumping hot with excitement! Whoo-hoo, YEAH!!! (fist-pumping up in the air)!!

WRITING:
The writing is basic. There is a lot of repetitive words, mainly “girl”, “babe” and “sister”. They are used so much that every time it comes up I get annoyed. It really takes you out of the story.
There is a lot of repetitive happenings. For example: Isadora putting on a sports bra, trousers and shoes.
CHARACTERS:
Isadora (main female character)
She is annoying with her “I’m can do it myself” attitude. She is to much over the top. It’s like the author wanted a strong and independent female character but she made everything 150%.
There are however moments where she is a bit fun, moments that made me smile.
Astra (Main characters best friend)
She is cool I guess. Not a lot of depth.
Flynn, Cain, Rayan and Avery (The four kings)
All the men flow together as one. I don’t know who is who and what any of them looks like.
Also Are they equally as strong ?
And then we have the process to become king. It would have been interesting and give a bit Moreno the story to actually know how they became kings and what the tests to become king were and why four kings? Is it because there is four elements? But they can control all of them so maybe not?
PLOT:
I’m not 100% sure what the actual plot was. Honestly I’m a bit confused thinking back on it.
I had a lot of questions and after a while Isadora just happens to get a diary that explained most of them. Sure it’s a great way to get things across but at the same time it isn’t that great to have all the information shoved in you face at once. I feel like it could have been done better.
Also it wasn’t that well done. Like she would “flick” through entries and stop at one. Then she’d only read things that needed to be there to move the story along. It could have been done better with dates on the entires and more story instead of just information.
Some questions that didn’t get answered that I felt was important is:
Why does she need four men?
Is the elements genetic or is it random?
How come she can talk to ghosts and why is it just one?
OTHER:
The book was slow at times and had some unnecessary things in. Instead of exploring the past or their country she would go into detail about useless things. For example she would mention dark creatures a lot, but never went into detail about those creatures/monsters. What they are called, how many kinds there are, if they have powers, or just what they look like.

Okay
ok start, and great storyline that I absolutely could not put down. I loved the characters, the kings, the best friends, and the world building. My problem, I have two, first I didn't care for isadora, she was strong physically, but mentally weak, lots of self doubt, and she seemed to carry on a lot about how she didn't want to lose her freedom, be a bloodmare, be a queen? She also had many, many breakdowns, and the whole thing about people finding her out? yet she was giving people her full name and using her magic like nothing? For someone who had years of suppressing her magic she all the sudden is being more free with her full blood witch background and showing her cards! Made no sense. I also got super tired of her talking about things she didn't want to happen when no one mentioned any of those things! Her grandma warned her about things that I didn't see one bit happen or take place, she goes on and on about these things that no.one.has.ever.said.to.her! There is way to much crying about absolutely nothing, lots of her rolling her eyes and being a child. It clashed hard with her tough girl show and it didn't work for me. Second, the romance moved way to fast, it made no sense because they knew nothing of each other, only felt the bond by first meeting her. As we go on it's the same, then all the sudden they care for her, it's weird and I wish the author has held off until future books, rushing romance only hurts a read and it definitely felt fake, I got no real chemistry with these characters and this book could have have been a great RH if done right and paced correctly.
ok start, and great storyline that I absolutely could not put down. I loved the characters, the kings, the best friends, and the world building. My problem, I have two, first I didn't care for isadora, she was strong physically, but mentally weak, lots of self doubt, and she seemed to carry on a lot about how she didn't want to lose her freedom, be a bloodmare, be a queen? She also had many, many breakdowns, and the whole thing about people finding her out? yet she was giving people her full name and using her magic like nothing? For someone who had years of suppressing her magic she all the sudden is being more free with her full blood witch background and showing her cards! Made no sense. I also got super tired of her talking about things she didn't want to happen when no one mentioned any of those things! Her grandma warned her about things that I didn't see one bit happen or take place, she goes on and on about these things that no.one.has.ever.said.to.her! There is way to much crying about absolutely nothing, lots of her rolling her eyes and being a child. It clashed hard with her tough girl show and it didn't work for me. Second, the romance moved way to fast, it made no sense because they knew nothing of each other, only felt the bond by first meeting her. Badass FMC
The world Serena Nova created in this book is amazing. A blend between modern and medieval. Televisions and swords,... The FMC was snarky and badass just the way I like it. She knows how to defend herself and is pretty independent. Her fierce loyalty towards Astra is probably my favorite relationship in this book. I liked the Natural Bond-twist, without them falling head over heels. The FMC leaves an impression and it's pretty normal the Kings want to get to know her better. I'm rooting for Tiran by the way 😛😂

This book has a kick-ass strong main character Isa. The world the author created with witches and elementals is rich and interesting. There is a lot of laugh out loud moments with the mc. Towards the middle things start to get steamy. This book is a page turner and ends on a slight cliff hanger. I can't wait for book 2.

I'm fatigued after binging the audiobook. It's a good, easy read, a little dark with action, magic, and simple fantasy. The simple writing style which pretty much explains the story instead of painting a image and allowing you to draw more conclusions and use your imagination does take away from the fantasy part, which why I call it simple fantasy.
The banter is good, as well as the dynamic in the group. Wish I had known more about the Kings, it would have added to their relationship and MM scenes.
I am left with unanswered questions. Like what happened to T, who put him there... seemed like an important part of the story only to have no real explanation....
Anyway, I would recommend the series. It's not fantastic, but it does build, and it has its moments.

Needs more work.
Unfortunately, I feel this book needs some work and further editing. There’s some obvious syntax problems within the first few chapters; poor sentence structure makes for an occasionally stilted read and makes it hard for the reader to immerse themselves into the story. Nova also needs to work on the principle “show don’t tell” - when you ‘tell’ the reader what everything looks like etc it changes the tone of the book dramatically. The tone conveyed here feels a bit juvenile and more appropriate to young YA, which, given the themes of the book (including RH, m/m and ‘long steamy scenes’) isn’t desirable. These are issues that should have been picked up and rectified by beta readers (assuming there were some) and the editor. Nova, I’d suggest looking into experienced beta readers not just people who want to read your book for free and tell you that everything sounds great, because they’ve done you a disservice in this regard.
However, I do genuinely like the premise of the novel, and the foundation of a great book is there. With a few more considerable edits this book could be a success.

First of all, this book needs further editing (spelling and grammar mistakes - even your best friend should be able to discern them).
Then, I didn't like the main character. It feels like she switches her personality from time to time in the book and her actions seem random and irrational:
- She is scared about people finding her out, but she's giving people her full name and is using her magic like it's no big deal a few chapters into the book? She overcomes her conditioning to hide and keep her existence a secret pretty fast.
- Some times she is suddenly afraid of things and as a reader you have no idea where this is coming from because no one mentioned any of those things.
- She is supposed to be this strong, independent, self assured, kickass heroine but comes off as cocky, snarky (not in a good way), arrogant, juvenile, ... - but she can kick ass.
Also it feels like instead of actual progress with the (main) story, I am reading about the main character eating, showering and sleeping all the time.

Well wow just WOW!! This books was fantastic it completely pulled me straight in to this awesome story with Isa and her guys, I couldn’t put it down. Everything was so beautifully described that it was all so clear and magical. The characters were awesome and their personalities had me laughing out loud, but also feeling the emotions that were pouring from the pages from them. This book is definitely one I’d recommend reading, the romance that is between everyone in the book is full of passion and excitement- plus there was some steamy hotness ;). This book really was epic and I cannot wait for the next one to come out!!

I was so looking forward to reading/listening to this book. The premise sounded interesting, the heroine sounded kick ass, and I'm a sucker for a good regain the crown campaign. Overall, the story wasn't bad, per se. It just had a few things that bothered me.
First, the heroine is very immature. She is supposed to be this incredible protector, trained in battle and disciplined. The reality, however, is we have this smart mouthed teenager type personality. I understand she was sheltered at this school for 12 years, but that's where the training and discipline come in, right? Nope.
Second there is supposed to be this bond between herself and the kings. I didn't see the love here. What I saw was a girl very in list with five men and in love with her best friend. She kept going on and calling her sister, but all her thoughts didn't really read sister to me. I mean, I really love my sister, would die for her, but I don't constantly was poetic about her in my head whenever her name comes up.
Third, this heroine is very much a Mary Sue. She spent the last 12 years studying swordplay and never practiced her magic once. The fact that she blows others out of the water with her magic skill is explained by her saying that since it is a born skill, they are born knowing how to use it automatically. If that was the case, then hello? why have these other witches been going to school for the last 12 years with you to come time their inherent powers that they were born with? I
Fourth, I listened to the audio of this book. Although there are not many, there is a section in the book that is in one of the king' s POV. Later in the book, the exact same chapter/section is read again, word for word. I had to go back and make sure that I didn't accidentally skip back again. U, I just heard it twice. I don't know if this was an audio book issue only or if the print book is a it as well.
Even with these issues, this series has potential. It is a trilogy, and I really, really want it to work, so I'm going ahead with book 2. I'm hoping it will pull it out in the end.

Witchy woman.
I really liked Isa and the story. A no nonsense, take no prisoners protector-witch, she’s been hiding who she is for years. Enter 4 Kings, some nefarious plans to open the underworld and a mysteries upon mysteries to solve. Will definitely read the next book!

Inconsistent fmc and snarky gone awry
The story could be fantastic. New world, new magic, but same tired trope. I would have loved more world and lore building because the bits that are there are probably the best part of the story. The characters all read a bit flat or, in the case of the FMC, underdeveloped. At least she actually trains to be a physical BA, because the rest...well... i'm kind of over instant knowledge and power. My biggest issue is the fact that the FMC seriously reads like she's got 4 personalities trapped inside her. The giggly 16 year old, the tired southern mother of 4, the stoic bodyguard, and a selfish and petulant brat. It became almost painful at the end. Still. I finished it.

I enjoyed reading this book. Give it a chapter or two; this is a new world so it's a little detail heavy at the start. I am looking forward to book #2!

Worst book I’ve read in a long time. My eyes were tired from rolling them so much. Definitely one for a younger crowd. Basic writing, and weak predictable characters.

Surprised. This turned out to be much better than expected I will say I did get a little sick of the main characters kid-ish phrases. If you’re going to throw adult themes take out some of the kidish-ness.
