Calling Magic

Rate this book
“Magic emerged between our fingers and a beautiful voice covered the hall with an enchanting song.”

Tia, the most powerful witch of her time, leaves her position at the Court of Wizards and, with a scarf hiding her purple locks, passes through the ancient walls of Paiza. As an assistant to the court magician, Tia spends her days brewing trickster potions, gossiping with Anna and navigating her way through the inventions and mechanics of Paiza and, most importantly, hiding her identity.

Tia’s dream of a calm, simple life starts to become a reality, until the day she meets Rhein, the King of Paiza, with his captivating gray eyes and cherished pocket watch, and the whispers of war reach her.

Will Tia be forced to reveal her true identity in order to protect her new home? Or will her power erupt and shatter her life once more?

After the success of her first novel, The Lost Rose, Kummam returns with a new enchanting tale of magic and adventure. Calling Magic is a perfect mashup of genres, following the young witch’s quest for a better life in the inventive city of Paiza. Don’t be surprised if the pages melt away in your hands and you find yourself dreaming of the magical streets of Paiza.

My rating isn’t to hurt the author or bring her down in anyway. I love that she was confident enough and was willing to put in the time and effort to share her work. I personally loved the book, I loved each and every character and their personalities, and I understand that the author is still developing the storyline.

However, My reasoning behind the rating is because
1. I believe that the author has much more potential, scrolling in her instagram page is a fairytale in itself, but being from the middle east we have many magical legends and fairy tale stories that could’ve been added to give the story more originality. I’m disappointed that she didn’t add any to her book.

2. I also felt disappointed in some parts of the book where the descriptions where short to the point where I had to improvise with my own imagination to picture the settings or the characters. There were also parts of the book where I couldn’t quite get what the author was trying to communicate to us the readers.

3. There were some characters that were mentioned and it frustrated me to not know what happened to, like the princess leaving, why is there a queens chamber but no queen, who is lady smitten and why is she in the castle. I was also disappointed that the battle the most thrilling plot was written in only 2-3 chapters at the end of the book, and there was no involvement from the other main characters in it, which implied the callers and inventors where weak and dependent on wielders since the confrontation was between the wielders only.

4. Also I believe that the book should’ve been proof read more than once for the grammatical and spelling errors.

Nevertheless, I’m excited for the next book wielding magic and hoping of giving it a higher rating.

First thing I need to say that I am really proud to see thriving Qatari writer. At first, I read this book because I was curious, I wanted to see the writer style of narration and the langue was used. I didn’t put high expectation because I didn’t want to be disappointed. However, while reading this novel I was really surprised because the writing style was really good, the narrative was unique and the story DEFENITILY DESERVES TO HAVE A DISNEY MOVIE ADAPTION. There wasn’t a page who I thought it was not important, or like an unimportant detail. Everything was connected to each other and made sense. There was a lot of events to say honestly, there was a lot of things happening. I loved how the narrative started with excitement, I felt the novel was written for teenagers, then there was a bit of romance and then shifted to a war events. I think this is really a creative way to shift between the narrative as it requires a very hard and needed a strong brainstorming. On the other hand, I think that the narrative moved very fast. There were many things happened and I think it required to be more explained. For example, the romance between the king and Tia. I think it needed more attention. As well as, the last part of the book, what happened before and after the war went very fast, I think it needed to have more details. All in all, the novel is really good, I enjoyed reading it, and I’ll definitely will wait for the second book to be released.

I’m not going to lie, going into this book my expectations were low as I personally did not like Kummam’s first book. I thought it lacked characters depth and the world could’ve been developed better. However this book was the opposite I couldn’t put it down and finished it in one day (and a few hours). I felt like Kummam truly took the criticism she got and worked on it to better her craft. I loved Tia and Burk and I loved her backstory I felt like she could be a real person. The plot was so interesting it was original and the mystery of not knowing fully what her backstory was and what she ran from until the end captivated me. The world building was amazing I loved the steampunk element it made it much more fascinating. I also LOVED the cover and illustrations. As soon as I finished each chapter I would go back and check what the illustration was and I liked how rough it looked it was not picture perfect and it matched the feeling of the book. However I’m hoping the King is developed more in the next book I felt like there is so much more potential to him. Nevertheless I applaud you Kummam for creating an amazing book and I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book in the series !

I read this book in less than 12hours and I regret finishing so quickly coz now I NEED more!! I honestly hate that I have to wait an entire year for part 2. I love the humor and emotions I got from this book and the growing connection between Tia and Rhein. I kind of wish there was more romance between them and I hope that’s what the second book offers. I can definitely see that the author is becoming more comfortable doing romance scenes, because this book has that romantic spark that “the lost rose” lacked a bit.

The author’s world building and the abillity to capture the reader’s attention is nothing short of impressive. Her take on magic and the laws that revolve around it in the city of Paiza are quite unique and creative. Proud of this Qatari talent! Would recommend calling magic to any fantasy/magic lover. Still reading the book and can’t wait to get back on it!

Loved it. The characters were well developed and the dialogue was great and the plot was well- established. It was a fun read and just what I needed to get out of a reading slump.

Being an avid fan of fantasy and fiction novel, I was excited to start this book. I loved the steam punk element of the world and how it was linked to the plot and characters. Having read Harry Potter and Ember in the Ashes series, I did find the book to be similar to those.

The characters were well written but I felt that the character of Tia could've been improved more. Also, the parts where Tia does something wrong, feels like she should be punished but isn't- was repeated a lot.

As for the plot, I enjoyed the overall story but I think most of the book was about describing the scenarios or the expressions and stuff rather than actual things happening on the plot. I wish there were more plot twists and progressions. The concept of wielders and callers was genius though.

Overall, I think the author did an amazing job writing the book. The word choices and dialogues were perfect. The relation between Anna and Tia was beautiful and showed the importance of strong female friendships. I would recommend this book to people who like fantasy and magical stories and want to immerse themselves in a captivating story.

Also, the book cover is gorgeous and worked perfectly with the story.
