Thank you Adam for another amazing buddy read!!
Unfortunately, this story wasn't exactly a masterpiece.
Miles is a CEO's son who is financing cancer research and is on the verge of a breakthrough when a stranger breaks into his apartment to steal documents.
Fearing for his life, he hires a bodyguard who happens to be the same guy he just hooked up with on the weekend. Said guy gave him a business card to remember him by. Convenient.
So bodyguard / hookup Gray is now doing his best to protect Miles and make him feel safe - which includes lots and lots of sex.
I'm down with most of what the story is offering, but Miles was a clingy needy twink and as such one of the most annoying romance characters ever.
Unfortunately, even the mystery plot somehow fell through towards the end, so this story doesn't leave the best of impressions with me.
Still, may they be happy ever after.

The bodyguard and the boss’s son !
Gosh, I liked this story ! We have a new Guardian Angels Security series, #1. Sean Ashcroft gives us the perfect characters, a fascinating story that is different and memorable, with humor plus lots of sizzling sexy times. Gray, ex-Military, big, strong, 6’3”, 32,
scarred and protective, is working with his friend Fox.
After a weekend hookup, the job comes in for a bodyguard. So, Gray goes to the Medical Research Company and it’s his hookup that needs safety.
Mild mannered, smaller Miles, late 20s,
the owner’s son is in danger. The two men already like each other, and ultimately feed their need for each other. Their is break-in, theft, an important drug trial in jeopardy, and more.
On top of that, our men fall for each other. We get terrific tension, worry, and a rescue, as Gray saves the day ! A happy epilogue that shows us some characters for future stories. This tale made me happy. I recommend it. ENJOY !

[Buddy Read with Martin and thank you for suffering though my incessant ramblings!]
Before I start off my review I would like to point out that this particular one might be either biased or that this particular book wasn't meant for me.
The story started off with a hookup scene with both the main characters and that wasn't the best way to start off a romance novel in my book. Miles was classified as a "twink", which unfortunately wasn't my favourite type of physical build in a guy. While I was hoping that my preference wouldn't affect how much I liked the characters, the book made it really difficult for me as Miles turned out to be needy and seemed to want to break down and cry at almost anything.
Gray is a much more likable character as a hunky and caring bodyguard. However for some particular reason, I could not bring myself to like or enjoy the relationship and character development in the story. Normally, I really love books that focuses on character and relationship development. However, the writing just didn't pique my interest and I have hardly ever felt so detached from the characters in a story.
The main story itself was mystery themed, or at least I thought it attempted to be. The plot itself felt vapid and plodded, and the way it ended felt cheap and anti-climatic. Many parts of the story didn't make much sense and even bordering unbelievable.
If there was one thing that the book has done well, it would be the sex scenes. From the foreplay to the dirty and sweet sex talk, they were all well written. However, this alone was not enough to make up for how much I wanted this story to be over.

I enjoyed this. I especially like how it started in Miles’ hotel room. Well, that was one hell of a hot scene. ;)
These two guys are perfect for each other, even if I did roll my eyes a few times at Miles for not seeing what – who – was right in front of him. Gray is one of those characters you can’t help but love. Miles had me shaking my head a little, but I liked him a lot, too. Nice story.

I am a big fan of Sean Ashcroft and I really enjoyed this book in the new series set in Sacramento.
We are going to get a circle of friends who were in special forces together and now starting a security firm. This is not an uncommon set up to a series but Ashcrofts hero's here are like all her other heroes--really good kind guys.
So, I am in.
Gray and Miles meet for a hook up and then Miles has a security issue and calls Gray. The plot is engaging but really it is the lovely relationship that makes this a book.
Both heroes have insecurities but they are always so good to each other.
I look forward to more books in the series.

Okay!
Not one of my favorites by Sean. Not enough action, sex or drama, and too much whining by both Gray, who was supposed to be the strong one and the bodyguard, and Miles. Omg, Miles actually got mad because the man tried to do his job, but left him alone!!! Really?? I may read the next book in the series be a I loved other books by Sean, so I'm hoping Fox gets his book...Loved him!!!

Don't want to be mean but....
I have to say this is my least favorite by this author. Good premise but it fell flat. Worst body guard ever, soap-operaish drama, insta-!ove, and all pretty juvenile. I know that sounds harsh and it might just be me but I really struggled with this one.

A great start to a new series. I loved both Gray and Miles. Loved the secondary characters and looking forward to the next book. My only complaint would be a little wordy at times and a lot of inner dialogue

I've read better by author
I'm surprised this had such high ratings, the book was okay but the main characters climactic argument was lame I just couldn't get over it and the subsequent events were predictable. I would not recommend buying, I'm glad it was free on kindle unlimited. I will not be reading anymore books in series.

Enjoyed this one. Yes, there were plenty of times where just *talking to each other* would have solved everything, but I do get why the characters might not have. The plot was just as compelling as the romance and I'm really looking forward to the rest of the series.

Hmmm... Miles and Gray.
So, when we meet these two, they're meeting via hook-up app for a one nighter. For some reason, Miles can't do relationships, though I don't really understand why, because he's out, even to his family.... he's accepted, he's wealthy, he's respected and well-liked... but he has this almost debilitating low self-esteem and he's constantly doubting himself. So, for some reason, even though the hour they spent together was hot and they both seemed to want more... Miles wouldn't let himself have it.
Gray and his best friend and former brother in arms have started their own PI firm, that does just about everything you'd expect a security firm to do. After a hot experience with Miles, Gray is hoping to see him again, though he never expected it to be a job related meeting. But, when someone is threatening Miles, by breaking in to his home and his car on numerous occasions, he doesn't turn him down. Not only because he can't afford to, but because he really wanted to see the guy who made such an impression.
Now, the thing with these two, other than being so stinking cute for each other. Is that they both wanted what they thought they couldn't have. It was irritating at times... the back and forth, with I want him, but I can't have him.... or, he's going to leave as soon as this is over.... or, I'm falling in love with him, but I shouldn't.... it's like.... why not? Neither of them said why not..... it was just spoken, so that was it. They were perfect together whereas Miles needed someone to take care of him.... he longed for it, though he didn't want to, he just did. And Gray needed to take care of someone. He needed to feel needed, and he was good at it.
Though, I will say that he wasn't like the Alpha's the I'm used to reading about.... the possessive, rough, do what I want to keep you safe, kinda guy. He often left Miles alone and wasn't all broody and in your face with his protection... which I didn't really like, because hello... you're the one supposed to be keeping him safe, not just coming around when he tells you to... you already know that he's not one to speak up when he needs help, choosing to do everything on his own and not wanting to be a burdon to anyone... which he wasn't, and as far as I knew, nobody made him feel that way but his mother before she left.... and I get where that could play into a little bit, but he was just irrational with it, and so full of self doubt that I was like.... okayyyy, enough already!
HOWEVER... because of the fact that one was so obviously needing someone and the other was so obviously needing to be that someone... it worked out between them, and it really did flow quite nicely. Gray was just a big ol softy, and I don't think he could've or would've hurt a fly... not unless he absolutely had to... so that was different, and even kind of nice, even if I wish he'd have been a little more take charge. Thankfully, Miles's situation wasn't really dangerous.
Speaking of the bad guys. I guessed them both at the very beginning, though one is kind of the well meaning bad guy, who really thought he was doing good. And he was, to an extent, his execution was just shotty. I understood why though, and I think you will too.
I'm hoping the next book is about Fox and Jimmy. I totally called that one early on too, though I think Jimmy will be just as needy and insecure as Miles is. I hope not... that is not a cute quality. I'm here for it though, so I'm looking forward to the next one.

First time reading Sean Ashcroft, and I'm grateful to have stumbled across his work.
Like I said above, Guarded is a fun steamy read full of feels and heart. Sean Ashcroft advertises an HEA with this story and fulfils his promise. Honestly, read his blurb on this book and he pretty much fulfills all the promises he makes for what's in this book. Plus: it's heartwarming but manages to hit the feels with many the things Gray and Miles go through, and the things that define them, without feeling anywhere close to sappy or overdone. They feel real and that's always excellent to find in any genre. There's an honesty to them and their story that's so good to read.
I was so stoked to find this. Steamy and heart don't always go together in stories. Anyone aiming for such a balance has a mission on their hands. But Sean manages to find that balance with Gray and Miles. Nothing detracts from the steam factor but I found myself chuckling or going 'aww' more than few times. Which was nice.
The plot was solid and found a satisfying balance between plot, characters, and sexy time. There wasn't a single point where I felt like skipping one thing to get to something else. Sean's author bio says, "he writes sweet, hot books about sweet, hot boys who absolutely deserve each other." I'm quoting because it's important. Sean Ashcroft, sir, mission accomplished. No, we're not looking at some multilayered-foreshadowing-to-hell-and-back mystery novel plotline. What we got though, was a super solid plot that didn't forget about the mystery but instead keeps in simple to put the primary focus on the characters and their connection. Honestly, the focus is character driven, which pretty much has me from go in any novel. When said novel still manages to not cheat us out of the secondary plot (which is the mystery in this case) but still ties it up in an unhurried fashion? Win. Do that in a any kind of sexy novel and well done. I'm sold.
There's nothing missing.
Speaking of characters though...
My two cents worth: Read for them. They are so adorable and endearing it's criminal. Nothing one dimensional about either of them. They were deep and vibrant and touching and most important in this context: hot. Full package deal. No complaints here. Plus, we get to go along for the ride as they find their HEA. Along the way we also get to meet side characters who were also vibrant enough to make me look forward to their books too. I'm a sucker for getting to follow a whole bunch of characters for several books.
Yes, please. More of all that, thanks.

But... rising so far above the bar to leave it in the dust: Ah, sweet victory. Thank you Sean, you're the boss and I, for one, appreciate it.

This is a bit the bodyguard trope with a twist. They hook-up before becoming clients. Miles only has hook-ups and gets together with Gray. When someone breaks into Miles' car and office his father insists on a bodyguard (they run a medical research company). Gray had given him his card so he calls and hires him. Of course there are more mysterious happenings and Miles and Gray spend some time dancing around each other.
I was a bit frustrated with Miles at first. He hires Gray but doesn't want to bother him by asking him to do any body guarding. Um. You are paying him to sit in his office then? I know it all stemmed from when Miles had cancer as a child and his mother couldn't deal with it and left and he doesn't want to bother anyone. He feels he has to be completely self-sufficient but if you are paying someone to do a job for you, they should do their job. Do you send your researchers home because you don't want to "bother" them by having them do their job?
But my frustration with Miles aside, he was a good soul who cared about people, just couldn't believe anyone cared about him. There is also a good dose of humour. Gray is not like your typical ex-military bodyguard who is so perfect and always knows exactly what to do, carried a gun and has a bazooka in the trunk. He's starting out his business with a former colleague/friend, they are barely getting by tracking down cheating husbands, they need the work and Gray knows he's not good at the investigation part. His job is to look mean and keep people away from his clients. He bumbles around at time, isn't sure when he should step in, makes minor mistakes, and is just a normal guy. I do get a bit tired of super hero bodyguards who can do no wrong.

This isn't an author that I go out of my way to read, but I've really liked some of their books. This one was a bit . . . off.
The MC, Miles, was too irrational for me. I know that the whole point of irrational fears is that they are not rational. I get that. But mentally healthy people tend to follow a sound internal logic even when they have a flawed premise. That didn't seem to be the case here. Even knowing Miles's backstory, his words, actions, and thoughts often had me going ". . . Huh?"
Still, this didn't have distracting grammar mistakes, and I didn't have the urge to drop it. It had some sweet and cute moments.
"For all that he was enormous, there was a kind of easy grace about Gray. He had full control of his body. I was glad when mine didn’t give up in the middle of something and leave me sprawled on the floor. It’d been a long time since that had happened, but… The weakness was hard to forget. Which was why it was hard to believe the way Gray was looking at me right now. Like he’d hit the jackpot."
“'How does it manage to feel like you’re topping even when I’ve got my cock buried in your ass?' Miles asked.
I shrugged. 'Talent.'

Not bad but insecure characters and unoriginal storyline.
Gray: bodyguard to Miles but honestly I'm so surprised he chose that profession. He's an ex-army ranger who doesnt think like a ranger at all. Yes he is an adorable teddy bear on the inside and I liked that but he was kinda dumb. Like are we sure he should he running the company and not Fox instead? He didn't seem capable as a bodyguard let alone be running a company.
Miles: CEO's son of Emerson Medical. Needed a bodyguard since his car home and office were broken into. I liked Miles he was sweet and smart but omg was he insecure. I'm okay with characters being insecure because everyone is in real life but he was over the top. Purposely pushing people away because you are hurting them and dont want to hurt them more drove me nuts. I almost stopped reading because it was the lamest copout ever.
The plot was okay but man was this story unoriginal. Hell is last name is Ward just like in Ward Security series from the spinoff of Unbreakable Bonds. I mean he also has a friend he calls Doc and a friend named Lucas? What are the odds? I also felt there needed to be more action. Miles didn't even really need a bodyguard he needed a private investigator.
What I did like was the very sweet romance. When both Gray and Miles were on the same page they were very sweet together.
I do have hope for the next one though since I liked Fox in this installment and am hoping I like him just as much in the next one.

Worst read in months..Painful in the wrong way
I'm beating myself up for reading this book. Why? Because that's all the main characters do page after page after page. A hint of drama, a shadow of plot and a whiff of action make this one of the most disappointing books I've ever suffered through. I kept hoping it would get better, that the author would actually DO something. So much potential to be a gripping story, instead I felt like I was reading a book for elementary school kids with with a bunch of sex to lure adults. Example? How about when Miles, the brilliant but inept damsel n distress tells his evil nemesis John that he has the proof of his criminal betrayal in his briefcase and that he's going home to figure it all out. This after berating himself for his personal weakness and stupidity over the past countless hours of my invested reading.
If you love watching grass grow on a windless, dry, empty prairie... This book is for you. Personally, I feel cheated by previous reviewers that think every book deserves a trophy. SMH
Disclosure: I tried my best but I couldn't do it. I read 82% and in spite of all the time and hope I'd invested in this book my self respect forced me to stop the pain and read something else.

Ok, so the first scene in this book really turned me off and made me not like Miles. I wouldn't have started with that scene. It made him seem like a selfish, soulless little prick and he's not that at all. I'd recommend starting at chapter two if you're a new reader.
That said, the rest of the book was really great. The tension was layered very well with a good blend of external and internal conflict. The pace was a little slow and there was A LOT of repetition in the internal monologues. Not so much that I felt the need to put it down but definitely enough that I started skimming. That needs to be tightened up.
I would have liked to have seen more interactions with Gray and his army buddies but that could just be me. I like watching males interact with each other. I think seeing both of them interacting with others besides just each other would been beneficial but not crucial.
Overall, I liked the story and was smiling at the end.

hmm. Not his typical style, I think. The book is just too wordy. There are too many inner thoughts that when it gets back to the spoken dialogue, I am lost as to what the conversation was about. Between getting coffee and salted mousse pie, I swiped twenty pages about coffee, liquids, cherries, wondering if gray didn't like his comment, and then to sharing a bite of the pie--which took 3 pages. I started to skim before I just lost complete interest bc I can't keep reading the same inner doubting dialogue and wondering if the other likes you but believing the other needs to see you a certain way so you don't act on your feelings but does the other even have feelings bc why would he have feelings for you over and over and over and over and over again. I'm going to keep going but eventually. Books you can put down are generally not what you want to read...

Seeing my 3 star rating one might think this wasn’t that great of a read but let me explain here for a sec. I picked this up thinking that it wouldn’t be too relationship focused. I tend to like books more that have conflict coming from an outside source rather than being angsty between themselves with a cliche misunderstanding and then it’s all roses again...that’s what I got. If that’s your style of read or that’s what you’re looking for this would be a great fit. The security role took a backseat and honestly Gray seemed a little out his depth (okay, a lot) and I kind of wanted more action, suspense, mystery, etc. Still, i think it was a good read and if there are books coming for the secondary characters I think they would be good to continue with as well. Just not for me.

Guarded is what these guys did with their hearts.
I fell in love with Miles, even though he was needy and did not trust most people.
Gray met Miles on a hook up and he felt a connection even though it was a one time thing.
Lucky for him he had given Miles his card. Never thought he would hear from him. However Miles needed protection and the only person he knew was Gray.
Seeing them try to manoeuvre their attraction, still be professional and of course guard their hearts was well written and engaging.
Miles had abandonment issues and had to get over that to fully Trust Gray. This was a step by step falling in love story. Good read.

Great start to this series‼️
Sean Ashcroft pulls out all the feels again. This story revolves around Miles, a wealthy healthcare researcher and Gray, the bodyguard he hires to protect him.
The storyline tugged at my heartstrings because the two main characters have so much to offer but don’t realize that they do.
There’s a great cast of characters who’ll certainly be headlining future installments.
I love Sean’s books. When he repeats himself through the flawed character’s thoughts, I know it’s his way of showing their angst and vulnerability. I’ve learned to love that about his work. On to Gifted (Book 2).

Great start to new series!
I really liked this book. Everything I’ve come to love from this author; well written, great characters, perfect humor, nice balance of love and lust so to speak. Sexy scenes are well done and steamy, but the emotional moments are equally as good. Our MCs had excellent chemistry and a great connection. This did have a little more angst and action than I think I’ve seen from this author before, but definitely not overpowering. Just right to give it a new twist for a new series. Well done! Will be looking forward to what’s next!

I liked the characters but as a bodyguard story just.....wtf? A bodyguard who doesn’t do anything other than come over if something’s not safe or already happened? No escorting to and from work, no cameras being installed after break ins. It just didn’t ring true. The story would have been just as believable if the guy worked at Starbucks and was hanging with his boyfriend and supporting him through some crappy times. Also, no gun, a 50 year old getting the jump on an army ranger when he knew the situation was unstable? Just no.

Miles needs protection. Gray is a bodyguard. Once they spend time around each other, they can’t help but feel the pull towards each other.
Someone breaks into Miles’ office, car, and house, and all that’s taken are some medical research results from his company that aren’t a secret. Makes no sense.
When the person is caught, it’s not for the reasons you’d think, and it’s complicated, but interesting.
All the characters are cool, but I love that Miles tries so hard not to be vulnerable or needy, but Gray knows when he needs someone.
Looking forward to reading the next book.

Feel good author
Ashcroft's sweet, shy characters have become somewhat of a palate cleanser for me after reading angsty books. A reliably good author if a little heavy on the fluff. This series has a little more action and grittiness than others I've read but is still cute, sappy, and everything you would expect from a romance novel. A heartfelt read with a pinch of mystery and a dash of action, it was exactly what I was expecting. The secondary characters are interesting enough that I'll read the next.
