The official art and making of book for King of the Monsters.
Following the global success of Godzilla and Skull Island comes the next chapter in Warner Bros. Pictures' and Legendary Pictures' cinematic Monsterverse, an epic action adventure that pits Godzilla against some of the most popular monsters in pop culture history. The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species--thought to be mere myths--rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity's very existence hanging in the balance.
The Art of King of the Monsters is an in-depth behind the scenes look at the epic movie. Packed with concept art, on-set photography, and insight from key members of the production--including director Michael Dougherty--this beautiful book tells the story of how Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah were brought to terrifying life.
This book was a fun read that actually does a lot of describing of the process of digital animation and how the overall movie making process. I learned quite a bit!
My only real complaint is that it needs more Mothra pictures, but, really, isn't that true of life?
More of a “Making of” book with illustrative artwork than an “Art of” book. (The text occasionally refers to interesting abandoned concepts but fails to illustrate them, for example.) However on those terms it gives some interesting insights in to the production. I would’ve appreciated some more discussion of the sound design and music to round things out.
The art/making of/concept art for Godzilla: KotM. This was a gift FROM me, that I read after the receiver was done reading ;]
There's quite a bit more text in the book than I expected [not at all a bad thing], and it's super interesting to see the processes of the designers/artists on anything from tech creation, environments, the humans, and of course the kaiju/titans. The art and attention to detail is incredible. It was mind-blowing to me how much effort was put into location concepts that literally were in the movie for less than a minute or so.
If you're a fan of the KotM movie, the current Legendary Monsterverse, or really just a Godzilla fan in general that didn't mind the movie either way, highly suggest.
As a fan of Godzilla since I was little, getting to see 3 Godzilla movies in theaters was a dream. I had to purchase this book when I saw it and I was not disappointed. The concept art and descriptions of how scenes were filmed was fascinating. If you’re a Godzilla fan pick this up!
