Struggling American waitress and aspiring novelist Maisie Clark dreams of becoming a full-time writer — even though in real life she's just lost her chance at an exclusive writer's mentorship program that would give her novel its big break. Desperate, she decides to take a chance and ask her favourite writer, a celebrated but reclusive English novelist, to help her find a second chance.

When she receives the author's reply in an envelope with a Cornish postmark, Maisie decides not to take the writer's half-hearted 'no' for an answer. With nothing to lose, she takes off for the author's last known location, a beautiful hotel on Cornwall's western coast. But when the hotel mistakes her for the latest applicant for a maid's position, Maisie finds herself given an opportunity too good to lose ... and a chance for a summer adventure far bigger than she ever imagined.

Surrounded by breathtaking Cornwall and working in an elegant hotel, Maisie's world becomes one of secret identities, quirky friends, and unintentional mishaps — and despite reminders of past relationship disasters, a certain handsome, charming local resident Sidney Daniels has her conflicted about her heart's desires, too.

Will Maisie find the chance she's been waiting for — and a possible new romance — in her perfect Cornish summer?

Favorite Quotes:

And when I opened its cover and read the first page, I began a passionate love affair with its words. I fell into that story and didn't come up for air. I drowned in its world for three whole days and came back to life after the last sentence, a little part of me wishing I was still there.

He pretended to flex his muscles beneath the sleeves of his jacket. "Please, I haven't eaten lunch yet," said the other one. "Your muscles will remind me of hard-boiled eggs."

I was going to have to ring the antique bell on the desk, which I hated doing — there's something so impatient about ringing service bells. That annoying little peal that has two tones — 'come now' and 'still waiting.'

My Review:

This quick and wryly written novella starts off a twisty new Laura Briggs Cornwall rom-com series. I’m curious to see where this story goes as I’ve already started postulating theories. Ms. Briggs introduces a colorful cast of quirky characters on both continents. The main character of Maisie’s situation has become rather dire and she has turned into a total fraud, which gave me pause but the deception wasn’t her initial intention, although she did conveniently step right into it without much hesitation. Maisie had moxie – I’ll give her that.

A fun uplifting feel good story, the perfect way to spend an afternoon. Laura Briggs writes short sweet Novellas that pack a powerful punch. This is the first book in a brand new series that looks like it’s going to be quite delightful. I mean seriously how can you go wrong with the lovely setting of Cornwall. Someday I will make it there, in the meantime I will visit vicariously through books.

Maisie is an aspiring author. When she finds herself without a mentor for a prestigious writing program she packs her stuff up and heads to Cornwal in order to convince her favorite author to mentor her. When she gets there she finds herself at a beautiful hotel and is mistaken for a maid. What ensues is a fun story of mistaken identity, quirky characters, old loves and new opportunities. Maisie was a great character and I enjoyed watching her navigate some pretty precarious situations.

The perfect start to a new series, 117 pages of pure delight!

*** many thanks to Rachel and Laura Briggs for my copy of this book ***

4☆ A wonderfully warm, feel good and fun read. The Pefect Start to a New Series!

A Little Hotel in Cornwall is a wonderfully warm, feel good and fun read.
It's the first book in a new series, which I'm really looking forward to.

Maisie has worked incredibly hard to earn a place on a prestigious mentorship for writers, but unfortunately for Maisie she wasn't so lucky and didn't quiet make the cut.

Following some advice, she sets out to meet one of her favourite Authors to persuade him to become her mentor.
Unbeknownst to him that she's even coming.
Traveling across the world to the Cornwall, where she knows he is staying, she gets herself into a whole heap of Mayhem, when she accidentally gets the job as a maid at the hotel lol
I mean what could possibly go wrong?
Only she has no experience and her Ex is about to turn up to put a spanner in the works!

I thoroughly enjoyed all the crazy antics, drama and potential romance.
This really is a story of following your dreams, no matter what the outcome and if at first you don't succeed try again!
It's a story of mistaken identity, friendship, secrets, discoveries and new beginnings.

A Little Hotel in Cornwall truly is a warm and delightfully fun, and uplifting read.
The pace flows along perfectly with plenty of laugh out loud moments, wonderful quirky Characters, and a gorgeous setting what's not to love!
Although this is a novella, Laura has packed so much in I didn't want it to end, I can't wait for the next instalment!

The Perfect Start to a New Series!
So hide yourself away for a few hours and get lost in A Little Hotel in Cornwall you won't want to miss out.

Thank you to Rachel Random Resources for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

This is a lovely first book in a new series by one of my favourite authors for short novellas, Laura Briggs.

It has a gentle and incredibly pleasant introduction to a whole cast of characters, who I suspect once we get more books will start to feel like old friends.

It's a story about an aspiring writer who is hoping to achieve her dream of being mentored on a prestigious program, if only she can find someone to mentor her. So on a whim she flies to Cornwall to hopefully find her favourite author who is rather elusive, and instead is mistaken for the new chambermaid.

Well it gives her somewhere to stay at least, and we also get to meet one of her ex-boyfriends, as well as potential new love interest.

This is a rather sweet book that I read in two sittings (could have easily been one had I wanted to ignore my work), and is a great way of getting to know Laura Briggs writing style if you are new to her.

If like me you have read her previous Cornish novella series - A Wedding in Cornwall, well there are some similarities, but it also has a different feel to it, and I suspect it will shape up to be very different, once we have some more book.

I would have loved to have more story to read already, so will have to instead sit back and wait impatiently for the next book.

Thank you to the author for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

One of the main things I loved about this book is that romance took a backseat…Yes, that is right! I said it! In A little Hotel in Cornwall romance is second fiddle! This story is Maisie’s story, or Marjorie depending on who you ask. It is about Maisie finding herself and fighting for her dream of becoming an author. My only grumble, it was over before I knew it – Yes I know it’s a novella, but as I found my stride I was left wanting to know what happens next in Cornwall!

Maisie was lovely, she took hold of an opportunity in front of her and ran with it, with some disastrous (but funny) outcomes. A bicycle accident brought her face to face with Sidney and his dogs. I have my suspicions to what Sidney is hiding and I look forward to finding out if I am right! Their friendship, however, was cute and endearing. You do begin to like all the characters, even the fearsome Mr Trelawney! They are going to fond friends of yours for sure!

Maisie wants to be a writer but doesn’t quite make the cut to get sponsorship in NYC, so she contacts her all-time favourite author asking if he would mentor her, who in turn politely turns her down. Not one to go on without a fight, flies over and comes to most breathtaking hotel and starts her investigation to find Alistair Davies!

This is a perfect, snappy novella to read in the sun, maybe on the beach, maybe one in Cornwall, to enjoy it to fullest. You do spend your time hoping that Maisie’s escapades pay off in her favour even enduring the amazing ball with some quite frankly awful people!

Whilst I wait for the next book, I am going to Cornwall in the summer, maybe I will have to help Maisie discover Alistair whilst I roam the luxurious beaches.

Having enjoyed Brigg's series A Wedding in Cornwall, I was delighted to be given the opportunity to read her new book which is the first in a new series.

A Little Hotel in Cornwall is written in the first person from the point of view of Maisie Clark, an American student and part-time waitress. Maisie wants to be a novelist, and when she finds she does not have a published author to mentor her for a prestigious writing programme, she writes to her favourite novelist Alistair Davies, asking him to mentor her.

She receives a reply on hotel note paper, declining her request. Undeterred, she travels to the Penmarrow Hotel in Cornwall in hopes of finding Alistair Davies, and persuading him to mentor her.

Here, she is mistaken for someone else, and ends up living and working under an assumed name. While this solves some immediate problems by providing her with lodgings and an income, it can only complicate matters further along the line. Especially as there appears to be a new love interest on the horizon... and a former boyfriend staying in the hotel!

The characters all seem charming and likeable at the minute; even Riley and Gomez who appear quite roguish when we first meet them. Also the stern Mr Trelawney shows he has a softer side when he talks to Maisie about her continued employment.

A Little Hotel in Cornwall is a short story which sets the scene for future instalments. The story ends with Maisie making decisions for her future, which will obviously be the basis for the next in the series.

I found this to be a quick easy read and look forward to reading the next one in this series.

So if you’ve heard of Laura Biggs before, you may know she does have another set of novels with Cornwall in the title but this is a completely new series with a new cast of characters to get to know.

Masie Clark wants nothing more than to be an author. In an attempt to find a mentor she journeys to Cornwall, to find her favourite author the mysterious Alistair Davies. When she gets there a case of mistaken identity means she’s offered a job as a maid with a probationary period of two weeks. That should be enough time to find Alistair Davies, right?

Wrong! No matter what she does disaster ensues, then she bumps into her ex boyfriend Ronnie. She becomes torn between him and local lad Sidney Daniels. Will she find the love she’s always wanted and get the publishing contract of her dreams?

The theme of this book is all about taking chances, you never know what might happen!

The beautiful Cornish coast really is the perfect setting for this lovely little novella. It’s so well described, I really want to visit there now!

Maisie is one of the those characters you just automatically root for, I especially enjoyed the fact she was a wannabe author like myself. Her supporting cast of characters are also a good mix of the eccentric and interesting.

I have to be honest, the introduction of her ex boyfriend, I mean he happens to be at the same hotel as Maisie at the same time, felt a little too convenient and a little contrived but of course that’s just my opinion.

A little hotel is Cornwall is the light hearted read that will make you fall in love with the characters and Cornwall itself!

A Little Hotel in Cornwall is the first book in a new series by Laura Briggs.

Maisie Clark dreams of being a published author but to make ends meet she works in a cafe. She has taken part in a wonderful course for budding authors that should see them mentored by published authors in a bid to get their own book published. Unfortunately with 13 candidates and only 12 authors available Maisie misses out on her mentorship. Taking her fate in her own hands she writes to her favourite author explaining her situation and asking if he would think about being her mentor. Sadly he declines, but mainly because of the fact she is in the US and he is in the UK. The letter he wrote was written on stationery from a lovely hotel in Cornwall. Before she could think too much about it Maisie throws caution to the wind, quits her job and takes a flight to Cornwall in order to search out the author. A difficult task considering nobody knows what he looks like and he most likely will have left the hotel and gone home by the time she arrives. Nonetheless, Maisie is determined to go for it. She has little money, nowhere to stay, and no real plan, but it's certainly going to be an adventure.

What follows is Maisie falling on her feet in regards to a place to stay and work whilst investigating a way to find her author. She loves the hotel, the surrounding countryside and the people. One man, in particular, catches her eye, not her author, but a man she is obviously fated to meet. Does she catch up with the author, is she going to become a published author herself, or is she destined to go back to the US with her tail between her legs to the unwelcome sounds of 'I told you so'?

I enjoyed this book, the setting was perfect, the hotel and the characters in it were fabulous, and Maisie was a pleasure to read about. Her love interest is a sweetheart, and I love that he referenced Dr Who frequently in the story. I just hope and am keeping everything crossed that Maisie's story will continue in the next book. If it doesn't then I am very much left wanting with the way the story ended. I have unanswered questions and I won't be happy until I get those answers. Please, somebody, tell me I will find out what I need to know within the pages of the next book? I would have given this book a perfect 5 stars if the ending was different, or if at least I was given the words 'To be continued' so that I would know that I wouldn't be left hanging. If Maisie's story isn't to be continued then I am going to be really wound up and would only want to give this a 3-star rating. But as I don't know what is going on, a nice round 4 seems the best rating to give.

I think I am just very impatient, but as long as I have something to wait for then I shan't complain too loudly!!

I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this novella and found it perfect for a quiet afternoon in the garden, on the beach or around the pool.

I have to say I have never been to Cornwall and every time I read a book there, I just desperately want to go.  This book is no exception.  This time I followed Maisie from the U.S. to Cornwall as she follows her dreams of finding a mentor for her writing career.  Tracking down her favourite author to a grand hotel in Cornwall, she has an amusing and quirky journey to discover that dreams come in many forms.

The setting of Cornwall is just one of the most romantic settings you can find and the cliffs, hidden beaches and small village is given such a vivid description in this book that it takes you there from the very moment Maisie arrives. I'd love nothing more than to experience the decadence and luxury of the hotel in the novel and it really is portrayed as a perfect place to write.  The staff of the hotel are so quirky and likable too and really add humour to the story.

Maisie herself is such a delightful character and is easy to fall in love with.  You spend the whole book on the journey with her and cannot help rooting for her all the way - even if she does make some rather interesting or disastrous decisions at times.

If you are looking for a short summer romance novel that is lighthearted and uplifting, this one is for you.

Everybody has a dream. Some will drop it and change plans when they encounter a huge disappointment. Others will do everything to make it work.

Maisie definitely belongs to the latter category. When she thought she found the key to unlock the door to what she wanted, other things have crossed her path. Is she willing to give those up and persue her dream or will she realize there are more roads that lead to Rome?

A lovely short story about finding a lot more than what you were looking for. 4 stars.

Thank you, Laura Briggs and Rachel’s Random Resources.

Cute quick read

I would have liked to have more description of the village and the hotel. The characters were nicely developed but I felt the plot needed some tweaking. It needed more tension and more depth. Overall, it was an enjoyable quick read.

Adorable cover meets quirky and whimsical characters in this “utterly feel-good, uplifting romantic read”. The author has finished her series about an American in Cornwall and now gives us this little cupcake of a book, which promises to be another charming series. At only 117 pages, this is a spring breeze of a read, and readers will find it just as sunny and friendly as the loveliest day in Cornwall.

Perhaps you can relate to the main character, Maisie. Maisie is a struggling American waitress and also a struggling writer. She has done her best at an exclusive writer’s workshop but has come up short. Her current WIP seems to encompass many genres, which may have led to its rejection. There will be no prestigious mentoring program for her, unless she can find a prominent author to review her manuscript.

Perhaps her favorite author would check her writing? She discovers he is a reclusive fellow, who may be staying at an iconic hotel in Cornwall. Deciding to seize the day, she troupes off to Cornwall. Through a series of comical misunderstandings, she is hired as a maid at the hotel.

Written in a dreamy, almost allegorical style, Maisie will enchant you as she searches for the key to her dreams. She makes several new engaging friends along the way, including a fellow-sojourner on the path to dreams, Sidney.

Most of the time, this book delights with charming and heart-warming scenes that will make you smile. Occasionally, the plot drifts away, and we have to wait until Maisie picks up the thread again. Maisie is a sweet girl, who I wanted to hug and protect. But the one thing that confused me about her, was that she did not seem American, especially in her speech which used many British versions of words.

All in all, a delightful book, with beautiful descriptions of Cornwall, which promises to be a good series. Fellow writers- you will relate to poor Maisie’s travails. Thanks to the publisher and Rachel’s Random Resources for a review copy. This is my honest review.

A Little Hotel in Cornwall by Laura Briggs
Books 1 - 8
I was so pleased to be invited to this tour; Laura Briggs writes such wonderful feel-good romance reads.
Book One - A Little Hotel in Cornwall
Struggling American waitress and aspiring novelist Maisie Clark dreams of becoming a full-time writer — even though she's just lost her chance at an exclusive writer's mentorship program that would give her novel its big break.
Instead, with nothing to lose, she takes off for the author's last known location, a beautiful hotel on Cornwall's western coast. But when the hotel mistakes her for the latest applicant for a maid's position, Maisie finds herself given an opportunity too good to be true and a chance for a summer adventure far more meaningful than she ever imagined.
A lovely, mesmerising book which was an absolute joy to read. I enjoyed discovering all the exploits Maisie witnesses whilst working at the hotel and the growing friendship between her and Sidney. But, will Maisie achieve her goal, and will romance bloom?
Follow Maisie's adventure for recognition by reading the following seven books in the series.
2= A Spirited Girl on Cornish Shores
3= Sea, Holly and Mistletoe Kisses
4= A Cornish Promis of Summer's Promise
5= A Train From Penzance to Paris
6= A Cornish Daisy's Kiss
7= A Stargazy Night Sky
8= The Cornish Key to Happiness
I want to thank author Laura Briggs and Rachel's Random Resources for a copy of the series to read and review.

espite having quite a few of Laura Briggs’ books sitting on my kindle shelf, this is the first of them I have read – why??? Who knows, so I jumped at the chance to be a part of this release day book blitz and finally have the chance to sit down and read one of Laura’s books, I am so pleased that I have!

A Little Hotel in Cornwall is the first book in the; Little Hotel in Cornwall series – can you believe it I have actually started the series from book one!!! This is monumental for me. This book is a wonderful start to what I think is going to be a gorgeously feel-good series, at 117 pages this is an incredibly quick read, if I (the slowest reader on the planet) can finish it in one sitting then anyone can.

This is a really delightful read, it’s utterly charming, I thought it could have done with being a little longer, but I can’t grumble it is a novella after all and it sets up the series nicely for those indulgent longer stories to come and even if the entire series is as short and sweet as this one, it will still be s gorgeous little series.

This tells the story of an aspiring novelist; Maisie packs up heads to Cornwall in an attempt to persuade her favourite author to mentor her and help with her own writing. Sounds like a plan! But, once she steps foot in the quaint and cheerful hotel In Cornwall everything goes a wee bit wrong, she is mistaken for being a maid which ensures a funny mistaken identity story (think along the lines of Maid in Manhatten).

For such a little book there is a lot packed in, it’s a fast-paced and highly enjoyable romp around Cornwall with a little romance thrown in for good measure. If you’re looking for a quick canoodle in Cornwall and then back home for tea this is the perfect summer date!

Maisie Clark has dreams of becoming a writer, and when the dreams she has worked so hard to achieve are delivered a blow she is determined to make them happen. Embracing spontaneity she ends up in Cornwall in an attempt to track down her favourite author, who just happens to be incredibly elusive. She arrives at a hotel she knows he has recently stayed in, but fate intervenes when she is mistaken for a maid due to commence work at the hotel. Seizing the opportunity, Maisie determines to make her dreams come true.
A novella, A Little Hotel in Cornwall was a super-quick and enjoyable Easter Sunday read. I really liked the character of Maisie, and admired her tenacity. I was completely swept along on her journey and found myself rooting for her to succeed.
This story is very much about Maisie’s state of mind whilst in pursuit of her dream. She knows what she wants, that is never in question, but as the story develops she becomes more open, and I would also say more patient! There is a hint of romance in this novel, but I really liked that it isn’t front and centre, it is very much a sub-plot and is the key to opening Maisie’s eyes to another way. I certainly found her story inspiring, and at one point I was even romanticising the notion of the breeze whipping through my hair whilst on a motorcycle in Italy!
With a gorgeous setting, a strong female lead and a lovely, heart-warming tale, A Little Hotel in Cornwall is the perfect excuse to switch off on a lazy weekend afternoon and drift away into a beautiful Cornish summer.

I've been wanting to read one of Laura Briggs' Cornwall novellas for ages but I didn't want to start part way through the series. Well, no such problem here as this is the first in a brand new series of Cornwall stories.

A Little Hotel in Cornwall starts in the US with Maisie Clark. She's a budding writer but needs a mentor to get her onto a writing programme and she doesn't have one. She contacts her favourite author, the reclusive Alistair Davies, to see if he can help and despite him saying no, she decides to travel to Cornwall, to the hotel whose notepaper Davies wrote to her on.

It's all a little fanciful I suppose, but it makes for a delightful story as Maisie reaches the hotel (which sounds absolutely gorgeous), ends up working there, and makes a few friends. All this in the space of 120 pages!

It's certainly a quick read, but packed with action. There's possible romance, misunderstandings, moonlit swimming in the sea and lots more Cornish loveliness. I was rather taken aback by the ending as I felt sure it would go one of two ways and it went neither, but when I looked at the blurb for the next novella in this series (A Spirited Girl on Cornish Shores) I realised that it follows straight on from this one and so I guess the author decided to leave the reader hanging on for more. I'm certainly intrigued now.

If you like light-hearted romance stories and are after a fairly quick read then look no further as this is perfect.

I have to admit Laura Briggs was one of those authors I had in my head to get to and check out. I had heard a lot about her romance and settings put nicely with the everyday and I was thrilled to finally get to one of her books.

This is the story of Maisie, who has given up everything to become a writer. We join her as she is waiting to find out about a program that will give her a big leg up into the land of the traditional published where she aims to be a forerunner. I have to admit I was aghast that she would give up a paid job to become an author but intrigued that she was all about the gothic.

Anyhoo, she has to find her own mentor and I loved that her reply from an author was pretty much ‘sorry but you’re in the US and I’m in the UK’ and she decided ‘right then!’ and went off to follow her dreams!

This book has everything I love, a really likeable lead, a mix up in people deciding she’s somebody else, her living as the help but having to pretend to be otherwise, captivating settings but above all one of the nicest reader letters telling people that this book was written to entertain so we should go enjoy it! And I did. A great book and I look forward to the next and also all that have come before. Thanks so much to Rachel at Rachel’s Random Resources for the book in return for an honest review.

When Maisie doesn't get on to the exclusive writer's mentorship program she had all her hopes and dreams set on, she was devastated, but she doesn't let that stop her and reaches out to an elusive British novelist to help her pursue her dreams! But even that didn't work, not deterred Maisie hops on a plane and heads for England, specifically the Cornish coast where that Novelist was last spotted, and after a series of hiccups, accidental impersonations Maisie finds herself a chambermaid at an exclusive hotel...but can she find her novelist?

After reading A Wedding in Cornwall by Laura Briggs, I was excited to read another one of her books, but this book is different to A Wedding in Cornwall and that is that this is the first book in a novella series and even though I have mostly gotten over my hated of series books, I struggled with this book, as in my humble opinion I think it would be better if it was a full book, I fear people (like me) will get easily bored waiting for the next installment.

As I love all things Cornwall I found the setting to be perfect, and I have to say I really enjoyed the characters, but it took me a little bit too warm to Maisie. But overall a nice little novella that will relax you for a couple of hours at the beach or the garden.

Oh my goodness I adored this novella by Laura Briggs and it's the start of a brand new book series by her.
A Little Hotel in Cornwall filled me with so much joy and comfort but it also left me inspired for what lay ahead for Maisie and her dreams of becoming a novelist.
Maisie is a literary student from the States and when her dreams of mentorship by an accomplished author hit a 'snag' she decides to follow her dreams in an unorthodox way and find her own mentor. Her favourite author, who's personal life is filled with mystery and secrecy, lives in the UK and the only clue Maisie as of his whereabouts is the name of a hotel in Cornwall. Maisie feels she has nothing to lose and much to gain with her Atlantic adventure about to start in a small coastal village in Cornwall.
A Little Hotel in Cornwall was such a delightful start to a new book series. We soon learn to love our leading lady, Maisie, and are championing her dreams of becoming an author. Experiencing Cornwall for the first time and this elegant hotel on the hill through the eyes of Maisie was charming and there was a lovely feel of idyllic escapism. From the developing new friendships and the fun start to Maisie's new adventure the author Laura Briggs has laid the perfect foundations for readers to be eager for more.
Delightfully charming, fun, romantic and full of feel-good vibes. Can't wait for book two!

If you are looking for a short story to slot in your TBR pile then look no further, this book is just 120 pages but you are instantly pulled into the life of Maisie Clark as she sets about making her dreams a reality.

Maisie is a struggling writer who is looking for a mentor linked to the writing programme she has just completed, so she listens to her lecturers advise about taking matters into her own hands and sets off to the stunning location of Cornwall. This book is sure to make you want to keep reading and see how life changes direction for Maisie upon her arrival in Cornwall and see what other surprises are coming her way.

I really enjoyed this story, it is a fun and upbeat read that will make you smile throughout. The characters are really easy to visualise from the descriptions and are quite quirky to really capture you and make you want to keep reading.

A short story that will keep you turning the pages to see if life is finally headed in the direction that Maisie is looking for or if it is all a dream that is not destined to become her reality.

A lovely book that I really enjoyed - 3.5*

What a brilliant start to this series. This is a series of eight short reads. I have previously read book three and eight before as I obviously cannot read a series in order it was lovely to start from the beginning. The story focuses on main character Maisie who's dream is to become a writer but her dream soon falls short when she cannot find a sponsor to read through her work to enter a grant/competition to become published. She finds her on an adventure to a hotel in Cornwall to find a sponsor but along the way she bumps into her ex. Not all doom and gloom though as she also bumps into a kind, handsome stranger Sydney. Loved his character. After a wobble she decided to return home but something tells her to stay and not give up on her dream. I cannot wait to see what lies ahead for this series and read it in order. An easy, short and fast paced read. Really enjoyed it all... The characters, the setting and the storyline. I really hope Maisie achieves her dream and maybe something with Sydney. A well deserved four stars from me. Highly recommend.

This book was most certainly a case of “right book, right time” for me. I’ve always thought of novellas as particularly suitable for Christmas reading, when life gets a little busy – but I can confirm that they work equally well when reclining in a deck chair, and I really enjoyed this one. It’s a scant 120 pages long, but the author successfully packs in an endearing story, well-developed characters and a particularly well described Cornish hotel location – and it provides the perfect foundation for the series to follow.

I liked the fact that Maisie is an aspiring writer, searching for her perfect mentor – and I really enjoyed all the references to her writing dreams. All the mistakes and misunderstandings that ensue when she arrives at the hotel in Cornwall are very well done, along with all the characters she encounters. She’s immensely likeable – funny and a little scatty, but with a real warmth to her character – and I loved the various scrapes she gets into as the story progresses, written with a lovely light humour that hits absolutely the right note.

The chance meeting with the ex-boyfriend was an element I really enjoyed – he was never really the man of her dreams, and you do rather wonder what ever drew them together – and his father is quite horrendous and so well drawn. The developing love interest is beautifully handled – again full of misunderstandings, but shaping up rather nicely by the story’s end. And I liked the Doctor Who references that pepper the story – I wasn’t sure at first, but they really work as the theme carries through into Maisie’s unusual gift.

In her preface, the author calls this one “a fictitious, fun, highly-romanticized story designed to help readers escape daily realities”. And it achieved exactly that – although perhaps a little lighter than I would usually have chosen, I really enjoyed it.

Thank you so much Laura Briggs and Rachel’s random resources for gifting me a digital copy of a little hotel in Cornwall, a box set of 8 novellas in exchange for an honest review. This review will be focusing on book one also named a little hotel in Cornwall. Cornwall is one of my favourite places in the whole world but it couldn’t be further from the life Masie was living in New York before taken the biggest risk of her life and following her favourite author’s advice as well as her own inquisitive nature of hunting him down for help with her book. I really enjoyed this novella and the developing characters; I can’t wait to see how they develop over the following books. The setting was described beautifully and it transported me to the beautiful beaches of Cornwall and blue seas I wish I could dive into. I have a few ideas on who this mystery author may be but I am excited to see if my theory is correct or will it twist and turn as the novellas move forward.

This was a wonderful little feel good read! The blurb says exactly what I would say to describe it so I won’t repeat it!

I loved Maisie, she’s so brave for jumping on a plane and going on the hunt for her favourite writer! I also loved Sidney who sounds like a proper Prince Charming! The supporting characters are all great and definitely bring out certain emotions….!

I found myself really backing Maisie and hoping she could pursue her dreams. But at the same time I wanted to give her a kick at some points….when you read you’ll understand!

Briggs’ description of this beautiful place in Cornwalll and the hotel is perfect. I could imagine exactly what it was like, and wished I could be there too. There are OMG moments, and moments that will make you laugh throughout. Overall I really enjoyed this and am certainly looking forward to book 2!!

I love that this was a quick read but the plot didn’t feel rushed.
I liked Maisie from the start of the book. Initially I felt an element of pity for her - having her dreams pulled away from her and not much hope left. But when she takes a chance and heads to Cornwall a whole new bold, chance taking Maisie appears. That is until she is rescued by Sidney and her pretentious ex boyfriend and his father turn up.

The story had me hoping that things would change for her - that she would take a chance on Cornwall and the people she had met. (It really had me invested especially seen as I knew this was the first in the series so one would assume she stays - even so my heart still urged the outcome on)

This book focuses on Maisie and her story - I really hope that in the other books we learn more about Sidney and the staff at the hotel.

Maisie Clark is desperate to find an author to act as her mentor for a prestigious writing scheme. She travels from LA to Cornwall to seek out a reclusive author and ends up working as a maid at the hotel where he writes.
A Little Hotel in Cornwall is a novella and sees Maisie start her journey. It is written from her first person perspective and the style of writing is easy to read. There is plenty of humour as Maisie finds herself a job as a maid by pretending to be someone else. She also has to keep this a secret from her rich ex boyfriend who happens to be at the hotel. Maisie experiences the beginning of a new potential romance with local man Sidney. I enjoyed the premise of the book and Maisie’s bravery and passion shine through.
I look forward to reading the rest of the box set and seeing how Maisie’s character develops as she strives to achieve her dream.

A Little Hotel in Cornwall is the beginning of a new series of novellas that promise to be delightful!

I loved the fact that romance somewhat took a back seat in this book. This was the beginning of Maisie’s journey in discovering who she is and what direction she wants her life to go in. She is also quite likeable with a great sense of humor. I’m really looking forward to getting to know her better in future books.

This is a novella, but the writer didn’t leave anything out. Instead of short-changing her readers, she takes her time in developing the story and makes me really anticipate the next book in the series. On to top it off, she is a fabulous writer who wields magic with her words!!!!

I have had a good few Laura Briggs books on my Kindle for a while now, through the recommendation of several reader friends of mine, and thought why not read them this month?
So the first book in the series is this, A Little Hotel in Cornwall.
A cute start to the series, where our American heroine ends up in this lovely hotel in Cornwall, and, instead of being a guest, finds herself working there.
Why is she there? Not for a holiday, no, but on a search for a well-known author, who she wants to mentor her...
I won't go into the ins and outs, because that would spoil the story, but it all happens in quite a comical way.
A fun read.
