How can a hero save the world if he can't save himself?

Crime rages in Cardinal City. The fanatical Syndicate’s answer is to be judge, jury and executioner, even if that means destroying half the world to eradicate sin. The only thing standing in their way is a family of fearless vigilantes known as the Deadly Seven.

Created in a lab with his brothers and sisters, Evan Lazarus can sense deadly levels of envy, but when he’s blamed for a mass tragedy, it tears him and his heroic family apart. As the Deadly Seven self destructs, Evan loses himself in the city’s ruthless cage-fighting scene, slowly falling prey to the sin he was created to fight. His only hope is to find a partner who embodies his sin's opposing virtue, the last thing he expects to find is his soulmate…

Doctor Grace Go almost died in the blast that killed her parents, and learned a valuable lesson: envy eats nothing but its own heart. So she forged a life filled with purpose and now seeks justice for the survivors. When she crosses paths with a fiercely protective but damaged hero, a desire she thought long gone is ignited. But Grace is wary of risking her brittle heart on a disgraced hero, even if she can’t seem to stay away from him.

When a figure from Evan’s past emerges, in league with the Syndicate, their evil scheme threatens to destroy everything Evan holds dear. Pushed to the limits, he will have to pull his family from the brink of oblivion and become the hero the city needs, or will envy drive him to destroy Grace and his only chance at love and redemption forever?

Envy is the first full length novel in The Deadly Seven Vigilante Romance Series. If you like your superhero movies and TV shows, and your paranormal romance band of brothers and fated mate books, then you'll fall head over heels with the tortured heroes and sassy heroines of The Deadly Seven.

This is hard to rate. On one hand, it took me like two friggin weeks to get around to finishing this book and I almost DNFed it a couple of times. On the other hand, I love Lana P's Fae Guardians series and I was sure this one would get better and that this was just the classic clunky series starter.

I was right btw - as I write this, I'm already halfway through book 2 and I'm enjoying it much more than this one!

I think the reason this book didn't do it for me was mostly because it was in need of a good edit. It was LONG, and it didn't need to be. There was a lot that could have been cut out without changing the storyline, except for the better.

As well, I found it hard to connect with Grace and Evan, and I just didn't really like Grace's goody-two-shoes personality overall.

BUT I was intrigued about the world building and interested enough in the other characters to read the next books, and my rule is 3 stars if I'm going to continue the series. So there you have it.

This was a great read. I enjoyed the unique storyline and the charismatic characters. This book had just the right amount of suspense. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own

Holy Crap. Where have you been all my life?

It's my fault, and I admit that. It's my fault that I didn't pick this book up earlier. That I hesitated. I'm not even sure why... I love Lana and her other series. I support her on Instagram. She's even kind enough to respond to all of my messages to her (she's the sweetest), so why the hell did it take me so long to read her masterpiece?

I will never understand myself but I finally did it and... I fell deep in love. Got kicked in the head. In the heart. In the ass. And on the other side too (wink, wink).

The story had everything: interesting and original plot, sexy superheroes, authenticity, my favourite hot scenes, love and much more.

I do have to be honest with you though. There were points I just wanted to grab Grace by her shoulders and shake her ferociously. And Wyatt. And Sloan. And Tony. And once even Liza. I was thinking to myself :what is wrong with them? But I think that was a point that author was trying to show us. The change. Trust. Understanding.

Don't be a fool like me and pick this book now 😂😊😁

Superhero-esque paranormal romance.
This was OK, amusing enough for what it is. The writing is sharp and I liked the characters. But I have to admit that they pretty stock and trade. He's dark and damaged and she's all caring and light that miraculously soothes the chaos of his soul (in this case literally). Nothing new. To go with that, I thought there was some painful predictability and the heroine was too prone to too-stupid-to-live actions for wholly forgive. Having said that, I'd continue the series if I found them at the library or they were freebies, but I'm neither rushing or paying to do so.

You know how you read the first book in a series and even if it’s not great, you can feel the potential and just know each book going forward will be a bit better than the last?

That’s this book.

I enjoyed this book quite a bit though the plot is kind of complicated to explain. The set up is outlined in The Sinner, the introductory novella. I’ll try to summarize it briefly.

A group of children, born in test tubes, are experimented on. They are rescued by one of their caretakers and her partner in the first book. They are adults now and dealing with their various talents. Their talents match the seven deadly sins. This is the story of Envy or rather Evan as he known to the world. He and his brothers and sisters were superheroes until everything fell apart. They no longer work to save their city and are fractured and divided as a crime fighting family. Evan is suffering a world of guilt, believing the breakdown is his fault. He allows himself to be beaten up in fighting rings. Near the beginning of the book, he is taken to the hospital where he meets Grace, a doctor in ER. There is a belief in the family that when each of the heroes meets their mates, yes, this is a fated mates series, their mate will settle them from what haunts them. In Evan’s case he unrelentingly feels the envy of all those around him, but with Grace’s presence, he feels calm for the first time in his life.

Grace has her own issues. Three years previously she watched as her parents die in a building explosion that is blamed on the Deadly Seven, Evan’s family. Of course they were set up but this was the beginning of their collapse. But Grace was a witness to what really happened and knows the Seven are innocent. It doesn’t take her long to put two and two together and realizes artist Evan and superhero Envy are one and the same.

I’m barely scratching the intricacies of this book and the stories of The Seven and their regaining superhero status. But hopefully I haven’t confused anyone reading this review too much. This book is a great start. Evan is the youngest sibling and as such feels he doesn’t reach his siblings expertise at things but Grace sees the worth and goodness in him and he truly needs her as she needs him. She’s a little much at times when she insists he doesn’t kill any of the villains. Sometimes the really bad guys, and there are some very horrible people, don’t deserve to survive what they’ve set in motion. But *sigh* she’s a doctor and her goal is to save lives so I sort of know where she’s coming from, but I do disagree.

I’m looking forward to the next instalment in this series. I strongly recommend you read them in order, I think it would be too confusing if you don’t. They are available on KU so can be read for free - bonus.

Sorry Sam, this was not for me.

I had high hopes for this after my friend raved about it, but there were just too many things that annoyed me.
The FMC is the dumbest “smart person” I’ve come across in a super hero novel. Her actions annoyed me to no end. However, she wasn’t the worst. Because this superhero family takes the cake.
The plot holes that held this book together looked like duct tape with enough holes poked in it to look like Swiss cheese. And don’t get me started on the typos. I’m not sure if this book ever made it to an actual editor. I think this was a case of, “My friend is good at English.” Because I’ve seen worse editing jobs, but lord knows this wasn’t done well.

Mmm, idk. Soft dnf at 38% for now.

I really liked the concept. It reminded me an urban fantasy/scifi CW show I would love; But, the execution had a more immature tone & I wanted more depth.

I stopped reading at the scene where Grace was at the tattoo shop, because what kind of dialogue is that? 🫥

Other smaller things that were not helping my experience were the narrator’s robotic GPS-sounding voice in the audiobook, & the words in the ebook frequently not matching the words in the audiobook.

Wow, what an adventure this book is. I loved it. The drama, action and romance. Couldn't ask for a better book. Can't wait to read the others in this series! Characters are well written. Each chapter was one of the mains. So there was no getting the run around of whose who.
Envy isn't the brightest sometimes with his attitude. Nor is he the strongest, but he does what he can to protect the city from what he can. Since his siblings can't be bothered sometimes. When he runs into a Doctor named Grace Go due to an incident. She will turn his world inside out and make his head spin. Can she be the key to help him solve a mystery and maybe bring his family together?

Evan has taken a couple of knocks to his ego and especially his body, but hitting rock bottom can make a man come to his senses like nothing else. Meeting his fabled mate and unlocking potential powers is a pipe dream, but when he meets Dr. Grace Go...maybe there’s more to that story than his family realizes. Grace is the perfect balance to his envy and everything he didn’t realize he needed, much less wanted.

Grace’s world fell apart two years ago when she lost her family. She was given a second chance at life, and has grabbed on with both hands, understanding what a precious gift it is. She’s happy with what she’s got, except for one thing. To find the person responsible for the attack that took her parents from her. Not for vengeance, but justice for the families struggling to hold on to their now.

Evan was a charmer and Grace a practical thinker. She had the patience and do good attitude of a near saint, but she’s passionate and intelligent and those glimpses of her letting loose humanized her more than anything else could. Evan wore his thoughts and feelings on his sleeve and was much easier to get a bead on. Beneath his charming exterior was an artistic soul with a keen eye for detail and a protective streak a mile wide. I would have said they wouldn’t mesh, but they worked pretty well together. Grace had a mind of her own and Evan did everything possible to keep her safe and happy...all without sacrificing too much common sense:) I did feel Evan and Grace’s developing relationship was almost too perfect, but again, for the first book in the series, it helped explain what the rest of the gang will struggle with. And just imagining the fireworks for some of them...haha haha!

The prequel to the Deadly Seven series, Sinner, did a great job setting up the backstory for The Lazarus family. Envy kicks things off a couple of decades later with the kids all grown up and struggling to find their place in the world. There was a lot of information-future character plots being laid (he’s the youngest of 7, so future books are always a plus!) then there’s the scene setting, and of course, the baddies have to be introduced and their villainous intent hopefully announced- basically, all the stuff a first book in the series would give you! The details were pretty well thought out and now I’m super curious about Evan’s siblings! Especially Wrath. Talk about having an emotional blow, not once, but twice! Ugh, poor guy.

I am more ruthless with my ratings now. So 3 stars means I enjoyed it, just don’t see myself rereading it again.

Definitely a new style of fantasy for me. The superhero spin. A family of genetically modified humans in search of their soul mates to balance their deadly sins.

I liked it, however it took me nearly a week to read. I found I wasn’t reaching for it when I had time to read, instead just leaving to my evening read time so only a chapter here & there. Then from the 60% mark onwards I smashed it out in one sitting. I don’t know if it was slow to go then gripped me or I just wanted to get through it as I’ve been taking so long.

Evan is the youngest of the deadly 7 siblings and a big blow up couple years prior has driven a wedge between them all. It’s a big focal point as Evan carries lots of guilt and also feels like his family don’t care about him. The siblings have all turned on their purpose and can see they are just muddling through life.
Then Evan meets Grace and she unlocks his dna special powers. It’s all biological attraction blah blah.

I do want to continue with the series but I think I’ll bounce into something else first to reset me and come back with fresh interest ….

The couple: Evan and Grace

Romance trope: paranormal; genetic manipulation
Series: The Deadly Seven
Length: 406 pages

Plot: Grace is an emergency room doctor with a sideline. In her spare time, she investigates the deadly bomb from a couple of years, the one that killed her parents. She knows it involves the Deadly Seven, a group of skilled vigilantes, but she is certain they didn't cause the destruction,a nd she knows this because she talked to the person who did the bombing right before it all happened. When she meets Evan, she doesn't connect him to the group at first. When she does find out who he really is, it might be too late for her to back out.

Commentary: It's interesting to me that in the previous book of this series (the prequel) and this one, the hero isn't necessarily alpha status. Evan is definitely skilled and strong and all of that, but he's not the overwhelming alpha that most of us have grown to expect in romance books, especially paranormal-adjacent stories. I don't think he's a softy by any means, but he is sensitive enough to Grace and her needs (eventually). I like Grace as an addition to the group and it's obvious that her friends are going yo play some part in the series as it progresses,

Next book in the series: Greed

Envy is a formidable addition to the Urban Fantasy/Superhero genre. Pecherczyk builds an elaborate world and an even bigger family structure with this first installment in the Deadly Seven series. I liked the concept of superheroes that are tasked with combating evils of old, the seven deadly sins. I thought that was a fresh and unique take on super heroes and the “villian” that they face. While the sins are the main focus of the Deadly Seven there is also a more traditional villain in this story, which I won’t reveal to you here. Overall I enjoyed this read and the idea behind it. My main complaint would be story length and editing for this book one. Given that this series is called “The Deadly Seven” it is safe to assume that each hero will receive their own book. While Evan & Grace’s love story is fully contained in Envy, the overall story arch is not. I guess you could call it an HEA with a cliffhanger?

I just didn't like it as much as everyone else did. The Lazarus siblings level of immaturity didn't seem realistic after the amount of training they were supposed to have had. It was more romance novel than action. I think I'd have liked it a bit better if there had been better fight scenes. Just my take.

Interesting

I wasn’t sure what I was getting into with this series, but I can say I now NEED to know about the rest of the siblings. Evan/Envy and his relationship with Doc made for an interesting read. More supernatural than romance, but still could consider it one since they each need their fates mates to unlock their power.

This is the first full length novel in this series. Sinner which takes place 25yrs before Envy, gives you the background to what happened and how this family came to be. It is a great read and one I would definitely recommend. Envy gave me everything I enjoy in a book and so much more. I became totally & utterly invested in Evan’s story. This was much more than just a family of super heroes with problems, it felt like Lana Pecherczyk imagined and carefully created Evan as a vulnerable, strong, handsome man, then breathed not only life into him, but also sorrow. As this storyline unfolds Evan whose deadly sin he was created to fight was Envy, feels totally alone in his fight. Many things happened and one person managed to destroy the family unit he once had. Now lonely he only hurts himself, & fights against Envy on his own. You can feel his hatred, rejection and despair dripping from the pages. Until he meets the mate that was destined for him, a myth nobody believed in. Grace. A Feisty, independent woman who is grieving an incident his family was blamed for. The reason for his family break up returns, opening up old wounds and new, making a whole new load of secrets & lies surface. Evan is lost, can Grace be his & their saviour. She gives him peace & a new talent that may just bring the secret lives lived & shelved back into the light. This book commanded my attention, my emotions, my tears & laughter, this was a world I believed in, characters that made my heart thump a little faster & breathes I didn’t realise I was holding. Lana Pecherczyk let me live in her imagination. I’m excited by this series & what’s to come, I know I may laugh or cry again, and I know I will feel every word as I drown in a world I won’t want to surface from for a while. This is an emotional and brave story leading me to a 100% recommendation for this series. You don’t have to love super heroes or fantasy. You just need to love creative writing at its best

I loved this. This is urban fantasy at its best. A comic book world come to life. I swooned, I raged, I empathized, I gasped – this story had my heart in my throat on so many occasions. Very hard to put it down once I started reading it. I love the worlds that Lana builds and this one is just delicious. If you love amazing yet flawed superheroes, bad guys and secrets and intrigue, sexy romance and some truly awesome action scenes, you’ll absolutely love this book. Brilliantly balanced. It was so good, I’d love to see it made into a movie.
Evan and Grace were a delight to read about – becoming enthralled in their individual stories felt effortless and the chemistry between them is electric and so seductive. This was a unique spin on fated mates that I just loved. Evan’s brothers and sisters (the rest of the Deadly Seven) are also introduced in this book and while they’re all so different, each character looks to be just as intriguing so I can’t wait to read about them too.
This is the first story in the series but each can be read as a standalone. I’d also highly recommend reading the prequel, Sinner, which sets up how this family of superheroes came to be and is a great mix of romance and sci-fi and action that sets the tone for this series. This book still gives you background but doesn't linger in trying to explain everything again which I appreciated and it also expands on this world making me want to learn more about it. I think Griffin is next and I can't wait to sink my teeth into him.
I voluntarily received an advanced copy of this book and this review is my honest opinion.

Read for: Romanceopoly, Warrior's Way

Well I pretty much devoured this in one sitting! I've always loved superheroes, add in lots of action and romance and this book was almost tailor made for me. It was such a fresh air to read a paranormal that didn't involve vampires/witches/shifters. And just look at that badass cover!

Both Evan and Grace were lovely, my heart really went out to both of them, they've both really struggled but you really get a feel for their strength at how they've overcome the challenges in their past.

The atmosphere in this book is amazing! It was actually one of the first things that drew me in, even from the very start you know that Cardinal City is a dangerous, murky place to live. How Grace was mugged and just shrugged it off as just another day was a brilliant way to emphasise this.

The only thing that didn't work for me was the writing was sometimes very choppy and the dialogue a bit stilted. And there were a lot of characters! It was hard to keep track of them sometimes but I loved how they all had their individual pasts and personalities. Definitely whetted my attitude for future books (Wyatt I'm looking at you).

All in all this was a lovely, action packed book with a brilliant and different premise. It's a nice series opener and I will most certainly be reading the other books in the future!

Evan Lazarus can sense deadly levels of envy. When he and his family are blamed for a mass tragedy, it tears the Deadly Seven apart. After being injured Evan is taken to the hospital where he meets the one woman he didn’t think existed, his true mate.

After reading the prequel, Sinner, I was very interested in seeing how the children would deal with their abilities and live in the real world. Evan, who can sense envy, was an arrogant artist who has lost confidence in himself. He no longer feels that he has anyone to rely on and is starting to become overwhelmed by envy. While I liked Evan for the most part, he felt very childish at points, which was irritating. I really liked Grace. She was a kind, generous soul. She is good for Evan, and for the rest of the Lazarus’s. While I did have a few issues with Evan, I still enjoyed this relationship.

The concept of this world and the Deadly Seven is fascinating. I love the superhero vibe, especially since it's not a bright and flashy superhero but a darker superhero. Pecherczyk has created a very unique world with seven unique and fascinating characters. I will be reading the next one because I really want to know what is happening with Syndicate.

After reading the prequel (a novella), I knew I had found a new fantasy/paranormal romance series to devour and the first book, set many years later, confirmed it again! What I expect from the genre are a special worldbuilding (but not too complicated to understand), a good romance, a great dose of action and this is exactly what this book delivered and even more because I now have a new favorite family to add to my list : the Lazarus! They're certainly an unusual bunch! Forget Batman, Superman and all the others, the Lazarus family are my favorite superheroes! And guess what? They started wearing face masks before it became à la mode😏.

I don't want to say too much so I'll just resume that the series start with Evans, the youngest, also called Envy. Because each sibling have a link with one of the seven deadly sin. He's an artist and his life, and the one of his family, is about to change when Evan meet Dr. Grace Go, an emergency physician who lost her parents in a tragic way years ago. Grace might be the answer to many questions Evan and his family needed.

I absolutely loved Evan's first reaction to Grace! And I like that we get to see superheroes act like the humans they are underneath!

Can't wait to be back in Cardinal City because I can already tell that the best (and probably the more risky and dangerous🙊) is yet to come!

Great find. Professional writing, editing. World-building is solid foundation for a new series. Pecherczyk does a fabulous job of bringing the 7 Deadly Sins to life. The personification of Envy was believable without being cartoonish. I was wondering how this would go - it had the potential to be commercially successful without an ounce of intellect. Not so. Percherczyk brings not only serious thought to the world she created, but also to the characters - imbuing them with multi-dimensional personalities & feelings. I love that she refused to fall into the 1st person narrative. I firmly believe that in the right hands, alternating 3rd person allows an author to introduce more characters and give depth. She obviously has talent and experience, as evidenced in her details and artistic use of language. She also manages to avoid commonly used tropes and colloquialisms, giving the work a fresh, new perspective on what it means to be a hero. This is also a book that can be enjoyed by 18-99 year olds. Wasn't even finished with book #1 and bought book #2.

After reading the prequel, I knew I had to come back for more, and Ms Pecherczyk did not disappoint. Sinner hinted at the horrors to come, and Envy brings the reader right there in the middle of things in a world that’s been taken over by sin in all its inglorious forms. It’s also the story of a family torn apart.

Evan Lazarus, the youngest of the Deadly Seven, is by far the most inexperienced. If only he’d told the complete truth, then maybe the tragedy that wrecked their family would never have come to pass. But they didn’t believe him then, and they sure as hell don’t believe him now.

When he meets Doctor Grace Go, Evan wonders if his chance for redemption has come at last. He’s changing, and it’s all because of her. This time he won’t let the Sin of Envy destroy his family or the woman who holds his heart.

I’m in awe of the world building here, and the angst and heartache between the siblings is palatable. Love it. And did I mention all the hand-waving-in front-of-one’s-face moments? Phew! Next stop – Greed!

I’m starting to learn that Lana will neither let me down nor ever disappoint. In my opinion, some of the most nerve-wracking things to write about is the love story between Hades and Persephone, a classic retelling (ex: Romeo and Juliet) and the seven deadly sins. Before a reader ever reads your synopsis, they already have certain expectations for the writer to meet. I try to walk into every reading as unbiased as possible, but even I must admit that when reading about the sins I want danger, I want plot twists, betrayal, pain, and a whoooooole lot of steam. Let me tell you about my girl, Lana... she DELIVERED THAT SHIT BABY! Two books deep into the series and I'm keeping this review short and sweet so I can take my own sin endowed self back into this universe. If you want danger, lust, bonding, family, and ripped heroes/heroines fighting the darkness within for redemption with a twist, this series is for you boo."

A must read superhero romance

I love that Lana started with the youngest of the kids. Envy or Evan is still trying to save the streets of his city by himself because his family stopped two years ago due to an argument. Needing to fight in the underground just to feel he wakes in a dumpster left for dead and ends up in the ER where he meets his soulmate, the one to balance his sin of envy and unlock his powers. Grace, the phenomenal woman who just wants to found the bomber so the families that survived could get the insurance pay out. These two are more than perfect for each other, its not just about balance, the love and strength they give each other makes for an amazing romance. This book will have you flipping through the pages to see how their relationship progresses while hunting for the bomber. A family spilt because of a girl come together with another. This is a must read series because hello superheros!!!

This is an amazingly thrilling read, I had such a hard time putting it down once I started reading. I lived all the characters and the story is very engaging. I especially enjoyed the dynamic between the Lazarus family. How the siblings act towards each other was too much fun to read about. It is an action-packed, full of intrigue romance that I would recommend to all readers. If you like superheroes and vigilantes then it is a treat for you. A very well-written and highly entertaining story that kept me up late at night. I haven't enjoyed a novel as much as I did this one in quite a long time. It was very refreshing to read for me as I don't usually go for this genre. I am so glad that I made an exception in this case but then I love Lana Pecherczyk's work and knew that it won't disappoint me.
P.S. I received a complimentary copy of this book.
