I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway. On one level, I appreciate the poet’s intent within this collection, which seems to be both to inspire others and promote reflection. With that said, though, many of the poems are nothing more than tired, well-known platitudes, and the collection is rife with grammatical errors that distracted me. In some cases, there were very odd images and statements that escaped me (like “I had to undergo a special/ Bath after the break up”). One star overall.
I received a free digital copy of this book through a giveaway hosted on GoodReads.
Flavor by Kuo Kenih is more a selection of thoughts on life, love, and heartbreak than it is what one usually imagines a book of poems to be. That does not mean, of course, that the words within it have any less beauty, but it is more in the style of ‘found poetry’ which showcases the emotion behind the words themselves than it is any sort of lyric-like verse or style. This is something which may put some people off, but I personally enjoyed it, even if it was not as deep or fancifully crafted as other poetry books I have encountered. Short and thought-provoking, many of these pieces would be good inspiration for artwork, similar to the kinds of imagery used in needlework or adult coloring books. Others would be good to print out and leave on benches or in random books to brighten people’s days. As others have pointed out, the vast majority of these are not the type of poem that would lodge deep in your heart, but they do have their place as momentary inspiration.
As much as I liked it for its short-and-sweet nature, however, I would also like to point out that it has quite a few spelling and grammatical errors throughout. I cannot find a bio on Kenih, so I cannot know for sure if this is the case, but given the sort of name they have and the nature of many of the mistakes, I would be willing to give them the benefit of the doubt that maybe English is not their first language, which may also account for how simplistic they are. Regardless of their language skills, though, this collection could definitely have benefitted from being proofread a bit more before being published to the internet. Overall, I would say it deserves a 3.5, because none of the issues with it are to an egregious level, and it would definitely be worth a 4 at the least after the errors are corrected. But alas, half-stars cannot be given, so I feel it is only fair to give it a 3.
Excepting for the lines that began with self referential words (i.e. "i"), the greatest part of this pamphlet read like fortune cookie inserts. This wouldn't be objejectionable, especially as I have saved the odd strip of wisdom, but by and large the wit and wisdom of fortune cookies is missing in the writer's phrases. There is a lack of variety in the vocabulary, and no images are conjured by the words. Most sound like the self encouragement an insecure performer might recite. I'd write more but then I'd risk sounding mean (versus factual) and surpassing the pamphlet's output.
Same old, same old, a collection of Rupi Kaur-esque poems that would make good tweets to scroll past or fortune cookie fortunes to throw away. While they're not bad poems, per se, they just don't offer much. They are snippets of a conversation you're overhearing at a restaurant or on the bus. They're not particularly engaging, every once in a while there's something that you agree with or relate to, but for the most part, it's just overhearing someone else's life and wishing that person would talk more quietly. While I am not a disparager of what some may call "junior high poetry," there's just something so banal about this type of poetry that is just so popular these days.
I won this in a giveaway. While I appreciate the book being given to me, I must say that I did not like it. It is a bunch of random quotes thrown together in ways that don't quite fit. A lot of the lines are unoriginal quotes that I have seen all over the internet, and there are quite a few grammatical errors. I read the whole thing in five minutes. Overall, it seemed poorly planned and executed. I would honestly never pay for this.
I did not really care for this book. It felt very generic. I enjoyed the writing style, but I was not very inspired. The poems felt cliche and it was very short. Not the worst book, but I definitely did not care for it either.
There was nothing spectacular about this. Most lines I have heard before. Others, I wish they were longer. It seemed as if it was the start of something beautiful that never developed. #GoodreadsGiveaway
