Restless Wind, Book Thirteen, Redemption Mountain Historical Western Romance Series
Dominic Lucero is a man driven to succeed. Leaving his family’s profitable ranch in Texas, he strikes out to build a new life. Becoming a Montana U.S. Marshal and purchasing land near Splendor, are two steps toward his ultimate goal. What he doesn’t need is the distraction of a beautiful woman. Especially one from wealth with a fondness for a pampered life.
Josephine Dubois ran away from the comfortable, but controlling, life of her parents’ New Orleans home. Seeking adventure and independence, she follows her dearest friend to Splendor. Falling in love with the town, she charges ahead with plans of her own. Plans that don’t include the handsome transplant from Whiplash, Texas.
Unsettled by his attraction to Josie, Dom focuses on establishing his ranch. But unusual events, coupled with surprise attacks, stall his efforts.
When the danger shifts toward the woman he’s come to care a great deal about, Dom can’t shove aside his feelings any longer. No matter his unsettled heart, he won’t allow an innocent to be caught up in actions targeted at him.
Can two people so far apart find common ground for a shared life? Or, will stubborn pride and the increasing danger force them apart, dashing their hopes for a future together?

I received a free advance review copy of this book and am voluntarily providing my honest review."
Shirleen Davies is a prolific author of the Historical Western Romance. Her stories always have complex characters and intriguing plots.
Josephine “Josie” Dubois is from New Orleans. She is a bright woman with an independent mind and a restless spirit. Her parents expect her to stay home and to act like a proper 1870 Southern woman. In time, her father expects to choose a wealthy Southern gentleman for her to marry. None of this fit Josie’s expectations of life and marriage. Therefore, while her parents are on vacation, Josie runs away. She plans to live with her best friend, Olivia who had moved to Splendor, Montana Territory to live with her father.
Josie loves the freedom that she and her friend are allowed in Montana, even though they are living with Olivia’s father. She and Olivia are allowed to go out at will and to do as they please as long as they don’t go far alone.
Josie meets Dominic “Dom” Lucero. Dom is a rancher from Texas who moves to the Montana Territory to run his own ranch away from his father’s influence. He has already bought a ranch, but he needs to build the structures and get the animals. Because of that, he temporarily acts as a sheriff in the city. Therefore, he has no intention of meeting a woman at this time.
However, he is very attracted to Josie. Unfortunately, he finds himself with extremely mixed emotions. He can’t stop thinking about Josie, and he doesn’t seem to be able to stay away from her. On the other hand, Josie is very attracted to Dom and is falling in love with him.
Shirleen Davies skillfully exposes Dom’s ambivalence as she unveils to the readers his often changing feelings toward Josie. Ms. Davies also exposes Josie’s vulnerability as she falls in love with someone whose mixed signals are confusing and distressing to her.
Meanwhile, Josie and Olivia open their own Emporium. They would never be allowed to do this in New Orleans. The women love the idea of being independent. They see this emporium is a better use of their time than sitting home all day.
To add to Josie’s distress, her brother, Rafe, finally finds her and wants to take her back to New Orleans. He does whatever he can to influence Josie and/or Dom to call off the courtship.
Besides the on-again, off-again “courtship” between Josie and Dom, there are a few incidents caused by a renegade rogue group of Crow Native Americans. They are stealing food and cattle without regard to lives and property.
I found this story to be complex with lots of enthralling plotlines. Also, Josie and Dom are interesting characters with realistic personalities that seem to fit in with the norms of the 1870 Montana Territory. They are both independent, stubborn and speak their minds when necessary. I found it very easy to identify with them.
Dominic Lecero never thought he would find love when he came to Splendor. He came there looking for his sister, Sylvia. He was hoping to bring her back to Texas. But when he got there he found out she had found love. Dom is a US Marshall and has to travel for his job. The first time he saw Josie Dubois get off the stage to be with her friend Olivia, he knew the attraction was there. He liked her company, but they had some rocky roads to get over. She had snuck away from New Orleans while her parents were away in Europe on a ship. Her brother Rafael went looking for her. He had bad news for her and didn't want to tell her in a telegram. He came to take her back home. He didn't realize that she had started a new life in Splendor. Olivia and Josie are opening an Emporium for all kinds of items not sold in the few stores in town. Dom knew she was an innocent woman, but he was not going to get in her way. He wanted her to succeed and felt he might not be good enough for her. Twice, she was in danger. First by some Crow warriors kidnapped her, and she fought by stealing his knife, and the second time was three men came in the Emporium looking to kill Dom. They had a grudge against him and wanted to use Josie as a hostage. Dom realized he wanted this woman to be his wife and partner. Great love story by Shirleen Davies.
Has it really been 13 books since we first met the people of Splendor, Montana by Shirleen Davies. By now I am usually tired of a series but not so for Redemption Mountain. Restless Wind is as thrilling and exciting a book as the first one in the series. Now the story-line is spreading out with the newcomers, Dominic Lucero from Texas and Josephine Dubois from New Orleans.
This is a must read for those who love reading of the westward movement in US history. The people, the place and the time come to life under this writer’s expert writing. I remember while traveling out west seeing a Pioneer Woman Memorial; truly these strong women helped not only to settle the west but to make it great, with their goals, strength and passion. Josie is one such woman. How Dominic ever thought he could stay away from her is the biggest mystery.
Dreams to fulfill, friends to stand alongside you, love to foster and villain to stop make this one great story. I love my time in the past with these people as I read there of their struggles and successes.
The publisher/author gave me a complimentary ARC of the book which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Dom led Josie on and blew hot and cold with their relationship. He shouldn’t have been kissing her and spending time with her if he wasn’t thinking about a potential long term relationship. It isn’t until she realizes that he’s not serious and breaks it off that he realizes he wants to court her. And then when her brother from New Orleans shows up in town and tells Dom about Josie’s inheritance and her lack of experience with men he breaks it off again. Yes, Josie’s future was uncertain in the beginning of the story because she ran away from home and didn’t know if when her parents or brother discovered she went to be with her friend Olivia and her family out west that they would come after her and make her go back. But he didn’t really talk with Josie before he decided to break up with her. There is plenty of action in this western historical romance with outlaws, gunfights, and kidnappings. I get the impression Deputy Hex with his new discovered daughter will be featured in the next story.
Shirleen Davies always delivers a great story and this one is no exception! The main characters in this story are Dominic Lucero and Josephine Dubois. The characters are well developed and you can draw a mental picture to the people and area when Shirleen writes about them. Dom is a US Marshall and has a ranch outside of Splendor. Josie is from New Orleans and has traveled to Splendor to see her life long friend Olivia. Josie ran away from New Orleans while her parents were on vacation in Europe. She has fallen for Dom and also Olivia and her have decided to open a shop in Splendor to sell higher end items. This book is fast paced and a page turner that you don't want to put down! Tons of action and drama in it and the up and down of the courtship of Dom and Josie. You will not be disappointed with it.
There’s no doubt about it but this author makes us well traveled. This book takes us from New Orleans to Splendor, Montana. Of course, within the story-line, we see Cheyenne, visit Texas and enjoy Big Pine, Montana, on occasion. I absolutely love the way the story wraps around people we have come to know and love in other books and brings in new characters to share in the joy of expanding Splendor. In this book we have young women, Josie and Olivia, while the older generation guides them in finding new adventures and romance. By the end we hear the small voices of CiCi and little four-year-old Lucy. This is an amazing book and I loved every minute of it.
I received an ARC copy and voluntarily leave this review.
This fast-paced, jam-packed historical western drama had me completely immersed in all that was happening from the first page to the end, with a great cast of characters, action, danger, surprises, family drama, heartwarming and at times heart wrenching romance. I loved the dynamic and undeniable chemistry between headstrong rancher and US Marshal Dominic Lucero and Josephine Dubois who ran to Splendor from New Orleans to get away from her controlling family.
Ms. Davies has given us another winner and RESTLESS WIND is a must-read for fans of this genre. I look forward to reading book 14 in the Redemption Mountain Historical Western Romance Series.
I received an advance reader copy of this book and this is my voluntary and honest review. I liked it so much, I purchased a copy.
Don and Josie are two very independent people that have taken their lives in their own hands. Josie ran away from her home in New Orleans when her parents were away on a European vacation. Dom went to retrieve his run away sister from Splendor, Montana when he envied her for her boldness and decided to stay there his self. Josie's best friend was one of the mail order brides and she encouraged Josie to come join her where women weren't tied down by traditions and expectations of class and gender. The attraction was instant for Dom and with time became a hope for both of them. With the danger present in the wild West of Indians and outlaws and the relationship struggles they endured it was anybody's guess if they could overcome it all.
It is always good to visit with old friends and this book allows us to do that. You can read it without reading the previous books but knowing the previous books allows you that family reunion feeling. Shirleen Davies always brings interesting plots, strong characters and usually a little twist to her stories. I love how her female characters are strong, capable women. No hand wringing waiting to be rescued ladies among them. I am so glad there are definite clues of future book possibilities in this book. I didn’t want to put it down, sometimes just to find out how clueless Dom could be. Thank goodness he wakes up.
Awesome western romantic suspense story. The blurb gives some idea about the story but it’s truly entertaining. Ms. Davies researches the time period in history to write these books. Women had little independence and Josie is striving to make her own choices in life. Dom works hard as a Marshall and rancher. The chemistry between the main characters as well as their development and the storyline make this book wonderful. I love reading a book where characters from previous Redemption Mountain books cross over to visit. I received a complementary copy of this book and chose to write a review. I look forward to reading future books by this author.
I received this ARC for free in replace of an honest review.
Dom is a U.S. Marshal and is in the process of building his ranch and from the moment he sees Josephine get off the stage coach he falls hard for her. There are many trials and tribulations for the couple, including the differences in social standing, ex girlfriends, kidnap and robbery. Never a quiet moment in Splendor! Will they ever get their chance to be together?
I did enjoy this instalment but again I found some of the dialogue a little stilted and I really didn't like the way the book ended. Honestly, it felt quite brutal.
this is a great story, Dom leaves home in Texas to become a marshal , Josephine runes away from home while her parents are away. they both wind up in Splendor and do not get along. you could read this by itself but I like meeting the other people of the town from the other books . there are some twists and turns. if you have read any of her other books then you will want to read this one I was given a copy of the book but this is an honest review
Another stunning story in this series. Josie is a strong independent woman who knows what she wants out of life. Dom is a marshal who is also trying to set up his own ranch. Following a family tragedy Josie's brother Rafe seeks her out to take her back to the family home. He persuades Dom that he is not good enough for Josie but Josie is determined to live the life she chooses. After they both get hurt after a run in with some Indians events take a different turn.
Josie ran away from her protective parents, to her best friend in Splendour. There she meets Dom, a US Marshall and would be rancher. Josie is stubborn and very independent. She has feelings for Dom but isn't sure what they are. Dom has liked the look of her the moment he saw her. But she has money and he doesn't. A lot of things are thrown in their way. A great read. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
I am torn on this book. I liked it but didn’t love it. The characters and plot are great as usual, but I didn’t enjoy the constant “hot and cold” nature of Josephine and Dom’s relationship. I did enjoy the way Olivia and Josephine’s relationships were twined together throughout the book. I really enjoyed the unexpected twists and turns throughout this book. Overall, I highly recommend this book and love this series.
When I pick up my iPad and flip to Splendor, Montana, life gets exciting with history of the 1800’s. Each character is richly created, several facets of living explored, and I am always wanting to return to this city when the last word closes the story.
Another great book in a great series. I really enjoyed Dominic and Josie's story and all the characters in Splendor. I look forward to more books in the series. I received this book for free but truly enjoyed it and voluntarily leave my review.
Shirleen Davies never disappoints. This story continues to build on the series with two strong characters that drew me to read their story in two days. I won't share any spoilers. I recommend this book for an historic sweet romance with adventure and surprises. Enjoy!
This is another great love story by Shirleen Davies. I enjoyed this book as much as any of the others in the Redemption Mountain series. I would recommend this book to anyone.
This story is about a young man who becomes a US marshall and on his return to Splendor he meets the love of his life. In the course of his job he meets many criminals and ends up with several enemies. This is my review and mine alone. Norma Gorrill
I enjoyed the strength of the women who moved to the West and their willingness to bear the hard life and uncertainty of marrying and bearing children in a dangerous environment . The West was settled by that strength and resilience. Great story.
This is a series I hope never ends. It just keeps getting better and better. Nobody writes a series like Shirleen. Can't wait for the next story in the series.
Another good heartwarming story in the Redemption Mountain series. As always the characters were well developed and interesting making it an interesting quick and easy read. Don’t miss this one.
Another fantastic story from Shirleen Davies. I've read all of her books.
Restless Winds is Dom Lucero's and Josie Dubois' story.
Dom is a US Marshall. His family owns a prosperous ranch in Texas, where he grew up with his 3 younger brothers. Dom's mother is a wonderful woman but his dad is a difficult man. He and Dom had a tenuous relationship. Dom left home to be on his own. He settled in Splendor and is working as a marshall. He is starting a ranch breeding cattle, in conjunction with his family's stock.
Josie grew up as the over protected daughter of a wealthy couple. She has an older brother. Josie is in her 20's but has never been allowed to have a relationship with a man. Her father feels no one is good enough for her but when she does marry, it will be for money and power and with someone he has chosen for her. When her parents leave on an extended European cruise, Josie sees her opportunity to leave and be on her own. She heads to Splendor, where her best friend is now living.
Josie and Dom fall for one another but Dom believes he won't marry for a long time. His feelings begin to change but different events work to keep the two of them apart. Will they be able to overcome the obstacles and dangers that threaten not only their relationship but their lives?
This book is part of a series but it can definitely be read as a stand-alone. Once you read it you'll probably go back and read the author's other stories.
I highly recommend this book about the U S Marshal Dominic and the Southern Belle Josie. He is trying to start a ranch in Splendor, Montana Territory and she is trying to start a shop with her best friend. Dominic knows that he must have Josie the moment he sees her get off the stage but her brother Rafe lets him know that he will never be good enough for his sister.
Rafe wants to take Josie back to New Orleans where she was raised and where he feels she belongs. He wants the best for her but Josie is determined to stay in Splendor with her best friend and find a husband and a life far from where she was brought up. She is so strong that when the plot twists and things begin to change you feel her determination to get her way.
This is a very good book that keeps you turning pages as you go. In the book, you also get to re-visit some of the couples you have fallen in love with during this series. It continues their stories while telling a new one. The entire series is full of strong women who have made up their minds on what they want and get it. The men are strong and caring while protecting the women they love. It makes a beautiful community that you wish you could join!
