Fight Like A Woman
Meet Kyle Sorton, teen, orphan, living a life of no purpose on a space station. Occupation: janitor. Future prospects: none. His only dream is to be someone. Anyone will do.
Wish granted–sort of. An accident aboard his space station forces his flight, and his ship crash lands on an unknown world. Mortally wounded, he uses an experimental healing device called a Clavatar to transfer his consciousness to the body of an alien woman. When he awakens, he discovers that this woman not only has special abilities, but also that parts of her consciousness still exist. Even more surprising to him is the fact that his new host, named Rinarra, is married to Merat, another woman. She is understandably upset over losing her wife, and initially rejects the new Rinnara.
Confusion reigns, and compounding his problem of understanding his new form is the existence of a hostile alien force known as the Droogs. Large, purple, and utterly evil, Droogs care not about any lives other than their own. Kyle, who slowly begins to not only identify as Rinnara but also to fall in love with Merat, decides to fight the invaders. Windeeri has become a home, and she’ll defend it, even at the cost of her own life.

Shortly after graduation, he moved to Japan in order to teach English to the hapless residents of whichever city he happened to be living at the time.
In 1997, he married the charming Akiko Koike and their union produced two rather interesting children. Frankel and his family make their home in Osaka where he teaches during the day and attempts to write YA fiction at night.

There are so many reasons to love this book. Typical of J.S. Frankel’s books there is a lot of action that keeps the story moving. But the action is not what makes this book exceptional. The book is exceptional because of the interesting concepts presented and the exploration of gender fluidity. One of the more striking quotes was, “Perhaps genders weren’t so rigid, after all. Perhaps they were more fluid, at least for some people, or were they hardwired to be fluid in the first place.” In this novel, that is set into the future, society has risen above the notion of women thinking a certain way and men thinking another way. There was a recognition that culture played a huge role in that past phenomenon and that was absolutely fascinating to me. In short, this book challenges old views and made me think. Finally, the main character was so endearing and I loved how he was stronger, more agile, a better warrior as a woman…now that’s turning things upside down in a way that I loved. I highly recommend this book.

When you pick up a Frankel book, you can count on a good-hearted hero we can cheer for, bad guys we love to hate, and a story that is fresh, exciting and meaningful. This novel definitely delivers all of that!
Kyle Sorton is one of the remaining humans after a plague decimated the race. He's an underdog; a bullied orphan who works as a janitor. That all changes when he crash lands on a planet and to save his own life, he transfers his consciousness into a native of that world, Rinarra, who was also badly injured.
The life Kyle finds himself in is one where his host Rinarra is fighting against a hostile group of baddies, as well as married to another woman.
We follow Kyle's story as he not only has to navigate in a new body but also a new life, one that is full of danger. The focus of the story is on the action and the plot moves quickly with lots of exciting twists and turns, but the love story within is sweet and real.
Kyle/Rinarra is a sympathetic character and I followed his/her journey with great interest. There are plenty of great action scenes, badass moves, and emotional punches.
Rating: five well-deserved stars
TW: torture, homophobia, threat of rape

I love when a writer can bring me places I’ve never been, and J.S. Frankel certainly did. ♥️ Anytime I can be taken away to a remote planet in the stars, I'm happy. Jesse has a way of transporting me to a different time and place, putting me right there in the moment. I worry for the characters, and that's a good sign of a writer who knows how to get into their heads and connect them to a reader's heart. Great story!

Summary:
Kyle has felt secluded and alone all of his life. He has lived on a space station for his entire life with his parents who may have loved him, but were not very loving. That is until they died trying to find a cure for a disease that decimated the human race. Now anyone with needed abilities or families are given preference to create new lives in the colonies on new worlds. Kyle knows that he will be the last one that will ever get his chance until the space station ends up being evacuated. Even then the only reason he got off station was when the people called for that ship and the pilot died giving him his chance. Kyle ended up crash landing on an unknown planet where he found a humanoid who was about to die. Kyle was also about to die, but Kyle decided to save her life with an experimental devise called The Clavatar. It was created to heal injuries that occurred n the battlefield and to possibly transfer an individuals consciousness into an avatar, that is until it was scraped when soldiers went insane. Now desperate times make desperate measures and Kyle wants to save her life, but he never expected that his mind successfully combined with her, Rinarra, consciousness. Imagine have two individuals within one mind with Kyle trying to find his way in a strange new world. Kyle may be on a new world, but different worlds have the same problems and Kyle soon learns that the enemies of his people, the Droogs, have taken control and are willing to kill anyone that stands in their way. Rinarra is the one person who was fighting and Kyle may be the only thing that stands in their way.
This was an intricate fast paced story that kept me spellbound form the very start. All Kyle ever wanted was a home of his own and he will do what he has to to protect Merat, Rinarra’s wife, who he quickly becomes the most important person to him.

Great book
I found this book very interesting. Not my usual genre I found myself getting pulled in by the story and the characters.
Very well done, would make a great film.
