David Calcano is an author, director, and co-founder of Fantoons Animation Studios based in Los Angeles. He collaborates with world-renowned artists to develop animation, books, documentaries, and original stories.
He was born in Caracas, Venezuela and has been watching Disney, Warner, and UPA cartoons ever since he was inside his mom’s belly. As an adult, he moved to the UK where he worked as a systems engineer—at least until he went nuts and dropped his career to pursue his dream.
David has written authorized graphic novels and books about musicians including Rush, Tenacious D (Jack Black and Kyle Gass), The Beach Boys, Henry Mancini, Simón Díaz, Iron Maiden, Motörhead, Alice Cooper, Marillion, Frank Zappa, and Johnny Ramone, among many others.
He has directed animated music videos for timeless songs such as Ella Fitzgerald’s “Frosty the Snowman,” Nat King Cole’s “The Christmas Song,” Frank Sinatra’s “Have Yourself a Meery Little Christmas,” Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas,” and Chuck Berry’s “Run Rudolph Run,” among many more.
Fantoons' animated shorts have won multiple awards at film festivals around the world. The studio also collaborates with the Disney Channel, for whom they created a series to promote healthy habits through original quirky characters and mini-musicals that incorporate various genres, from blues to hip-hop and even punk rock.
Currently, David is focused on crafting beautiful stories that connect with hearts and souls, using the magic of both animation and music—made possible by the creative spirit of the artists at Fantoons Animation Studios.
What a cool piece of Rush memorabilia. A very cool book telling the history into the making of A Farwell To Kings, onenof the landmark albums. Loved the illustration style of Fantoons and had a blast reading this. I wont spoil anything about how it was written but very cool insight into the album making process.
This graphic novel covers the making of the Canadian prog-rock band Rush's fifth album, A Farewell to Kings. Not sure why this album was selected for this treatment, as I would have expected at least two of their other albums to be more obvious choices (2112 or Moving Pictures). Nevertheless, this is well done and entertaining. The artwork is outstanding and the story is interesting, with new information for all but the most hardcore and well-informed fans to learn about that period in the band's life. I especially enjoyed how well everyone's personality comes through the pages, both in their 1970s incarnations as well as their 2018 versions reminiscing about their formative years. On the flip side, anyone who isn't already a Rush fan and at least broadly familiar with their 1970s output in general and this album in particular should skip this (and perhaps go listen to their music instead to discover what you've been missing).
A must-read for Rush fans. It's chock-a-block full of cool pictures and a fairly-well told story of making one of the band's greatest albums. I quite enjoyed it.
