A razor-snark, sun-soaked urban fantasy trilogy for fans of Jim Butcher and Ilona Andrews.
You'd think coming back to life on a beautiful island would be a good thing. Turns out life on the beach kind of sucks. Especially when you spend it harvesting souls for a vampire.
But after four years of reluctant "employment," things have somehow gotten worse. Some jackass just framed me for murdering an old friend. And the cops seem pretty damn sure I did it. More concerning than potential jail time: the local goddess of rain wants my head for the crime.
You see, we cut a little deal when I came back to life that no one knows about. What'd I get from her? I'm not telling. But I'll tell you what I gave up: no weapons and no murder.
Pretty easy to follow, right? I thought so. Well, if you're a Reaper, it's a pain in the ass. Because a creature's gotta die for you to reap its soul. And despite the postcard sunsets, it gets pretty dangerous in the jungle without a gun.
Never say the gods don't have a sense of humor. But this time the joke is on me. Because if I don't find the real killer—and why they pinned this mess on me—before the week is through, I'll be returning to the land of the dead.
And this time, it'll be for good.

I have reviewed each of these books separately, but got them as the complete set, which I recommend, as they do need to be read in order. They are very fast paced with a lot going on, and little recap between books.
Set on the mythical South Pacific island of Altheas, the trilogy recounts the adventures of Eden Hunter, an American con artist who was brought back from death by a crazy goddess to work as a Reaper - a collector of souls from recently departed beings, both human and supernatural. She is contracted to work for an evil vampire warlord called Aldric, and must provide him seven souls a week for use in spells and as a form of magical currency. She gets caught up with the FBI when people close to her are murdered, but she has no special powers, and cannot kill, so must use her resourcefulness and trickery to save the day.
I enjoyed these because they feature an unusual set-up and mythology and are all about the action rather than the more typical romance in disguise. I like the traditional third person past writing and the MC is super snarky. There was sometimes too much going on, and much of various character’s backgrounds are only briefly referred to, and often left incomplete. I liked that it was a definite trilogy rather than an open-ended series, however.
A very good trilogy full of adventure centering around a real kick ass heroine, Eden Hunter who goes out of her way to protect those she loves and usually ends up doing things her own way and on her own! For all those who love great female characters with lots of spunk this is a series you will surely enjoy! Featuring vampires, demons and Goddesses, death, sacrifice, magic and lots of mayhem too! Enjoy, I sure did and have left reviews for each book individually as I read them!
Eden Hunter is an ex-con on an island paradise, indentured to a vampire warlord and oweing some series gratitude to a has-been rain goddess. Dragged into the paranormal underworld four years ago when her death and reanimation made her able to reap souls on demand, things are a taking a turn for the shaky as the FBI rock up on her doorstep. There's a murderer on the loose, a body on her lawn (well, beach - island life has it's perks), and a warrant soon to be with her name on it. Something's tipping the fragile power balance between the warring supernatural factions, and Eden's stuck slap-bang in the middle.
Main character Eden is a scrappy, mouthy sort of UF heroine who hasn't got time for things like sleep or excessive personal hygiene - she's got a job to do a who cares if she looks like she's been dragged through a bush backwards? She's caustic and unashamedly says just what she thinks. She's not exactly kick-ass, being physically no more than human, but she won't back down from a fight if she can out-think her opponents. I wished there could have been a little more character development for the side cast who act as Eden's foils, but she's a strong voice carrying to story along.
The thriller and paranormal elements could feel a little under-explained, and I often had to stop to rationalise character's motives or make sense of the lore. It's interesting, but maybe a little overly complex. I do love the uniqueness of the setting, what with how our characters could be hopping from downtown to the jungle-side of nowhere.
Ignore the holes in the background paranormal scene-setting and it's a high octane blast of magical mayhem.
The world is a stage for the scene. Jason Statham wrote the script. Nothing makes sense. Nothing! Not one thing comes across as believable. The author pencil whips the whole place and the characters, immersing in the story not likely. Why 3 stars? It takes talent to make up this much BS. This kind of book does have a place in world. Need something attention grabbing from go but easy to put down? This is it. Junk food.
This was a great trilogy! It kept me up until 4 in the , because I couldn't put it down. I loved all the characters, kia, misha, eden, cross, and especially the talking cat. And the best part is the whole story is complete and you don't have to wait to buy another book. 😁😁😁😁😁😁
This was truly an exemplary story with more twists and turns than than your favorite rollercoaster! Each time a plan is hatched it goes a wry! Each time you think you suspect where the story is heading the author puts in an unseen plot twist, keeping you involved right up to the last paragraph! Masterfully written!
A Reaper, A goddess, an ancient vampire, the FBI, and The Department of Supernatural Affairs all on a single island, what could go wrong? Everything! Follow Eden Hunter for just a few days to see just how wrong things can go and still she lives.
