The Road and The Lamp: The Sparkle on the Travelling Soul

Rate this book
Vasant and Kanchan are a young, loving, married couple. One day Kanchan happens to buy a painting of a young western woman, painted by a French artist, many decades ago. A friend and colleague of Vasant, Dr Sarkar, likes this painting so much, that Kanchan gifts it away to him.

Then a curious thing happens one night. While travelling on a train, Dr Sarkar meets a young woman, who is a replica of the woman in the painting, except for her Indian complexion. This woman is Chitra. The mainstream of the story is the bonding between a poor, orphaned Chitra, hounded by past terrors, and Dr Sarkar, who has an extremely wealthy background, and a stable, staid persona.
This is a story that explores the events in people's lives , and the role of karma in fashioning our destiny , and in entitling us to Divine help and intervention . Thus the story follows the possible destinations that our lives could head towards in this world and beyond .

This was a beautifully written, uplifting story about a kind, young girl, who, after experiencing some traumatic events, works her way through to a rewarding life, along with the help of many generous people. This was a sweet and inspirational book :)

The Road and the Lamp. As the blurb states, the novel is about a man who receives a painting of a woman as a gift, and then sometime later, meets a woman whose face is the exact replica of the woman in the painting, except for the ethnicity.

The first thing that strikes in the first few pages is the author's almost impeccable command of the language. Although there is no specific time frame mentioned, the story seems to be taking place during pre-internet era. There is a slow and gentle flow to the story, with a lot of similes and metaphors in the descriptions. The characters are portrayed well. The romance between the two main characters is very poetic. It has the feel-good movies of the '90s kind of vibe. The novel also has a heavy thread of religion of spiritualism running through it. If you like those kinds of novels, you will definitely love this one.

That said, I felt that the narration lags in places. Every now and then, the author puts the brakes on the narration to indulge in flowery descriptions of the people and surroundings and such, even though it doesn't have anything to do with the story. I didn't mind, but I don't know if it will be everybody's cup of tea. Also there are very few conflicts and plot twists. As I said, this is a gentle kind of novel.

The significance of the title is revealed in the last few pages. It will make you pause and think. I don't want to spoil it, so it's best that you read it for yourself.

The book checks a lot of boxes in terms of readability and likability, so I give it five stars. Would recommend.

First of all thanks Savita for giving me an opportunity to read your book and review it.
This book is a love story between Chitra and Rishi Sarkar. Chitra who is from a small city near chandanpur. She use to live with her step mother. Her step mother being wicked had made Chitra's life hell. One such fateful day when she reached home in the night she faced a monster who tried to Nab her escape from his clutches she reached the station, where she meets Rishi Sarkar who is a Doctor by profession and was traveling in train with his brother Arun. Rishi helps her out of this situation by taking her to the hospital and also to his house. These events leads to romance between the two. How they come together is the remaining story. There are some special guest appearance by Some fictional author Hemant who is a director of jyoti ashram for orphan kids. Overall it's a good story touching the story to the girls who have suffered due to other evil men. Its a ok Goodreads...🙂
