4.5 stars! I have two main side interests apart from my own field - the stars and the seas, and this book really delivered on fuelling my curiosity of the latter. It was written so simply and beautifully, often answering big questions by describing a tour along a portion of the deep ocean. It was a no-nonsense, limited jargon book that was packed with everything you’ve ever wondered about the ocean from a real life, current, ocean explorer (who has actually discovered many, many new species, been the first to explore some far reaching parts of the world’s oceans, and been involved with legislation to protect our marine diversity).

The only reason this isn’t a 5 star is because I found myself looking up a lot of interesting geological features or rare species, or even what him and his research team look like. I would have LOVED if there were designated pages in the book with photos from his journey.

Why did I buy Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas again?

The deep ocean as described by an ocean explorer. Stories of deep dives, submersibles, research ships, alien-like creatures, extreme environments, ocean floors, valleys and underwater mountains.

Really fascinating! I picked it up mostly to find out if Megaladon could still exist (apparently not ☹️) but thoroughly enjoyed the entire book. Makes me wish I’d studied science instead of theatre!

A nice, well put together book that gives a good introduction into ocean exploration and the different milestones that it has undertaken.

A really good introduction into a subject I’ve loved since I was a kid but never had the brain or heart to explore. Hopefully I can keep it up in between fiction reads.
