The follow-up to Ms. Gold's first Compass series set in Norway, this follows MC Kristine, who lives in the US, and MC Hannah from London, to the deep south of Louisiana.

Hannah has had a difficult 6 months since her magical time in Norway, as she found out her ex was stealing from her and she lost her entire business. Ouch. She is broke and struggling and stressed and has not contacted Kristine in Louisiana at all, which really must have bummed Kristine out. As we know from book 1, Hannah is adopted and never knew her birth mother, but finds out she died recently and left property for Hannah in.....wait for it.....Louisiana. What are the odds?

All the major coincidences aside, this was a decent read. I did like the two MCs and how they navigate these new pathways in front of them. They are very different in looks an personality yet work together and fight for their relationship with utmost respect. I adored the secondary characters in small town Presley LA, especially Jolene the diner owner and Mary the motel receptionist. They are charming and spunky and full of sass. There's a scene were Hannah and Kristine have these two ladies over for dinner, and it brought tears to my eyes when they arrived all dressed up and excited, as even just dinner was a huge event for them. Aw.

My only criticism is that I just found it a bit tedious and long. It definitely could have been shorter. Love the chemistry the two MCs have, but the sex got redundant after awhile. A lot of detail about reno'ing the house and restaurant that could have been edited down. And why oh why was Hannah named after her mom, HANNAH. I get it, wanted her to have "something" that was hers, but her name? A few times I was like wait, which Hannah am I reading about....

Overall about a 3.75/5.

Lovely book which I really enjoyed. A slow, meandering tale that is thoughtful, thought provoking and feels real. Loved the 2 MCs. Highly recommended.

Reread on holiday - perfect read!

Outstanding read!

Lise Gold has done a beautiful job writing this sequel. She is spot on with her vivid descriptions of the setting and the vibe of Southern towns. It makes me eager to see more of Louisiana. The plot line is excellent and with amazing characters you can't help but fall in love with. It was really a great pleasure to read this series and I'm looking forward to her next book.

I enjoyed Southern Roots more then Northern Lights. Really good read. Solid story, solid characters. I love small town romances so this is the kind of books I love to read the most. Really recommend this book. I HOPE there is going to be a 3rd? :)

I loved this book more than the first. HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE? Firstly, I finished this book eight days ago, and for eight days I have not stopped thinking about it. In fact, my treat for closing out this month with all my allotted books read and reviews complete, is to re-read it… Yup, I adored it that much!

The continued love story for Hannah and Kristine is beautiful, and I felt more love and affection from them both in this book than before. I think, because we go into this knowing they have natural chemistry from book one, it meant Lise Gold could concentrate on the falling in love aspect.

I also really enjoyed getting to know the secondary characters, especially Kate Simmons, who I think might be the main protagonist in book three of the Compass Series, Eastern Nights… Isn't that exciting. I'll be reading Eastern Nights early in March!!!

This series is shaping up to be one for the top shelf of my favourites! I'm intrigued and excited about what's to come. This novel alone was fantastic and, I'm excited to see how the series can stay on its impressive trajectory. Bring it Lise Gold!

I have read all of Lise Gold's books and love them. However, the first book in this series was my least favorite. It suffered from long descriptive activities that I didn't find interesting. I DID want to read this second installment because I liked the main characters and their brief romantic encounter in Norway enough to see what would happen with their challenge of living in different countries.

What I liked about this one was the continued chemistry. These two women are really cute together. There were some amusing side characters. I appreciated contrasting family dynamics.

The pacing seemed to be a little bit off to me. There was a good amount of time in the beginning where the main characters are apart. Not my favorite thing. Then there were some letters that, while important to the story, just didn't resonate with me as much as they should have. Too many of them. The first one was supposed to be from a 16 year old but the voice sounded more 30-40-ish.

There was quite a bit of repetitiveness. We would read something, then it was told to someone else, and then sometimes to even another.

And once again, we were taken on 'activities' that were lengthy and descriptive, but not that interesting to me because they felt unimportant to the story.

I'm sorry to say that I didn't really care for this one too much. I was often feeling the urge to abandon it. But the main characters are really cute. Lots of hot intimate scenes. Romance, feelings, etc. were all there. And I suspect that people who like to read about touristy things, would not have had as adverse reaction.

I'll still read whatever Lise Gold puts out next. This series just hasn't been my favorite.

The second book of the Compass series is about Hannah's and Kristine's reunion.
I had a lot of fun reading this story. Hannah and Kristine were great characters and they made an amazing couple. It was interesting to read about what happened to them after their vacation in Norway and to follow Hannah discovering her roots.
The story was very sweet and had low angst without being boring.
One of the things I love about Lise Gold's writing is how she describes the settings of her stories. In my opinion the vibe of the Southern towns was beautifully described. It felt as if you were there, too.
I will definitely read the other books in this series. I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes sweet romances without drama with a small town setting.

Hannah and Kristine are definitely one of my favorite couples. I loved them in Norway (Northern Lights), I love them in Louisiana. I took my time listening to the end of the book as I was not ready to say goodbye.

There’s a lot more happening in this second book than in the first one, which was basically two people falling in love in an extraordinary place (which goes to prove that stories don’t have to be very elaborate to be wonderful). Having come back to London to find her world upside down, Hannah finds out her birth mother has left her property in Louisiana, which also happens to be where Kristine lives. The falling in love continues in very sweet ways (seriously, I think I’m in love with them being in love), and both women come to realize they can expect much more from life than what they’ve had so far. I loved how one grew into a family (or the idea of a family) she’d never thought she had while the other found her way away from hers, or at least separate from hers, putting her own story above others’ expectations.

I also loved the narrator’s accents, they were perfect.

A continuation from Northern Lights a few months after Kristine and Hannah had connected in Norway. Hannah finds her life in the UK in shambles, and Kristine is feeling her own discontent with her life and job in the South of the USA.
Truly amazing (some might say unbelievable) circumstances bring them back together in the wildest ways, refueling that connection as more than just a holiday fling.

I so related to Kristine and her family dynamic. It got me so emotional, because I've literally been right there among family you try so hard for, despite them picking you to pieces and criticising everything you do. I was proud of how Kristine stood up for herself both with her family and her new boss and that douchey new-age team bonding guy.

My one complaint was how throughout their time together, the lovers would mention that it was fleeting and how they knew it would end, and they wouldn't be together forever, as Hannah kept extending her stay and they committed to spending more and more time with each other, yet still lamenting it had to end. I just kept thinking, WHY?
That tension ended up feeling a little forced overall, in my opinion. You've got two smart people who have absolutely amazing chemistry, get each other perfectly, have been given ample opportunities to be thrown together despite the odds, yet still are trying to act like they can go their own separate ways after this? Puhlease.
It just seemed like a very thin plot device, which irritated me every time it got brought up and made characters that were otherwise strong and capable seem spineless.

BUT Thankfully it all worked out in the end when they realized how they could make it work. It just annoyed me that they took so long to get there, so it just marred my overall enjoyment.

Another enjoyable read in the series! This time around, it’s lengthy and more evolving compared to book 1. We got to know a little more about Kristine’s family. And Hannah finally got to know about her own parents as well. Wonderful secondary characters. Expect zero angst but some teary moments (for me at least) which had me reaching out for some tissues...

Overall - another good read and one which leaves you with a feel-good factor 😊 4.25 🌟

I truly loved this story. Hannah and Kristine are made for each other. They are always supportive of one another. Hannah’s journey through her mother’s life was heart breaking but it did give her the answers she needed. Addison Barnes was amazing with the accents and bringing the story to life. I just wish it didn’t have to end.

This second book in the Compass series followed the story of the lovers who met during the special Christmas in Norway. I am declaring Hudson, from London, and Kristine, from Covington, Louisiana to be my new favorite couple! I must say that I especially loved this book because I was born and raised in New Orleans and took great pleasure reading and relating to their activities. It was mostly accurate, and how I would love to sink my teeth into another beignet! Presley was a fictional town, but the others are well-known. It also pleased me when I heard Lise Gold interviewed on Sapphic Book Review with her answer to which location in the series she’d most like to revisit. She said Louisiana because of the friendly, interesting people, and the food.

As for the story, I loved watching their love grow, even though they both knew Hannah would be returning to London. It was just so enjoyable how things came together. I’m hoping to see more from them in the future books.

I started this book straight after reading Northern Lights and after only a few pages I was so confused I had to stop and check I was actually reading the second book in the series.
Hannah has lost her restaurant and then soon after gets an inheritance in Louisiana. This was an interesting, if very contrived way of getting Hannah and Kristine back together, even though this does take a third of the book. I enjoyed the way their relationship developed plus there was a lot more about Hannah’s mother, which added another interesting aspect to the story.
However, after a while I started to get annoyed with their total inability to think through their situation and come to the obvious decision. It just felt like the author was dragging it out, sometimes I am probably just too impatient.
Overall I really enjoyed the book and if possible would have given 4.5 stars.

I can declare, that Lise Gold is always an author that writes a very good read that won't disappoint and will keep you entertained and excited the whole read through.
Wouldn't mind reading both books as one but have to admit that this way it did make me read it faster, since sometimes I'm not in the mood for reading a long book. This way it was a hidden long, but wonderful book in two, that had amazing characters and story plot that didn't bore.
You don't have to worry about cheap drama or unbelievable story plots and can always expect the feel good reading emotions.

"Even if we're oceans apart, my heart will always call for yours."

This is such a sweet, feel-good, warm and cosy romance, sure to make you feel all sorts of butterflies and have you smiling your head off, but I have to admit, it will have its particular audience. When I say this is low-conflict, it's very low conflict. There is of course a plot, and there are things that the characters need to work through and overcome, and there is some measure of conflict, but if you're looking for lots of action or angst or interpersonal drama, you won't find it here. This book was pretty hefty, but sometimes it almost felt like nothing was happening.

And honestly? I really liked it? This is the continuation of Hannah and Kristine's story from the first book in the series (definitely read these in order) and they had a great relationship and great chemistry to build upon and that only continued here. The first book gave you a great look at Norway and a slice of its culture through the eyes of the protagonists, and this one does the same with Louisiana. And it was honestly pretty charming. Lots of great small town vibes, if you like that sort of thing, and it provides a certain amount of humour, but also a nice sense of family and community (with some characters, at least). We see Hannah and Kristine really working to make the most of their situation and develop a relationship. It isn't all sugary sweet; there are a fair amount of sex scenes. 🔥 At the same time, we see Hannah slowly discovering her roots and falling in love with the small town she's found herself in, and Kristine grasping control of her life, both at work and with her family. When things come up, they discuss it and move past it. It's all very normal in a way that I really liked. Almost mundane. But that wasn't a bad thing, it was GOOD.

...To a point. Haha, I don't think the book needed anything added to it; the slow, low-conflict nature worked for the characters and the setting. But this could have been way shorter and still been just as good and swoony and affecting. The audiobook was 12 hours long and I just don't know that it needed to be. On another note, there were a few moments where the commentary felt... off? (Serious topics being brought up and then just sort of laughed off/brushed aside.) There was also a fair amount of head-hopping, which is never not annoying to me, alas. It was less noticeable since I listened to the audiobook, but still. Argh.

Speaking of the audiobook, it was very enjoyably read by Addison Barnes, and I really enjoyed her work once again. I just think she does a really good job with characters and accents, and injecting emotion into scenes when she needs to.

This book won't work for everyone, but aside from my little nitpicks, it did work for me. It was just really sweet, and I really enjoyed Hannah and Kristine's relationship. I liked the side characters, and I look forward to reading their stories soon!

This is book #2 of the compass series. Northern lights was book #1. Eastern nights is book #3.
I am really enjoying this series.
Besides being a wonderful warm love story between Hanna and Cristine, its full of events and characters .
The first book was all about Hanna and Cristine chance meeting and world wind romance while on solo vacations to see the northern lights. It ends with them wondering how they can see each other again. Hanna from London and Cristine from Louisiana.
This book is how they find each other again and start a new life.
(I suggest that you read them in order)
Hanna, who was given up at birth, finds her birth parents. This triggers a multitude of wonderful experiences and events. And somehow reunites the two lovers.
It is a very happy, warm love story. The small town of Pressly and all the interesting townspeople forms a strong backdrop for book #3 that I am starting tomorrow.
I chose the audio version narrated by Addison Barnes. Even though she does a good job I feel her voice is too light and juvenile for Hanna and Cristine.

An amazing read. I fell i love with Kristine and Hannah in book 1 and it was great to catch up with them again in this book. Great story line and the secondary characters are amazing. I would say this is the best book so far in the series. Looking forward to reading more in the series. I believe book 3 is out soon.

I recommend giving this a read. You will not be disappointed.

Hannah and Kristine Are Back!
Hannah is back in London from her Norwegian vacation to find that she has lost everything, except a cat she never wanted, due to her ex’s theft. Having been forced to move in with her friends and their children. She is depressed, a bit lost and has put things with her new girlfriend on hold. When she gets a letter from an American attorney who informs her she has inherited her birthmother’s home and restaurant, it’s an answer to her prayers. Better yet, the property is a 90 minute drive from her holiday lover, Kristine. Meanwhile, Kristine had become seriously disillusioned with her job at the bank after a merger and even though her best friend is pressuring her to move on with her life she can’t forget Hannah...

This book is even better than Northern Lights and that is saying a lot! There is so much story here and so much happens. I loved the settings and the details in this tale. There are new faces and places, new hopes and dreams, new experiences and adventures for everyone and of course a love story with lots of steamy bits to make me ever so happy! Old pains are put to rest and while some tensions are still high, there is peace and contentment to be found. The chemistry between Hannah and Kristine is still smoking but their feelings are so much deeper now making this an even more lovely romantic drama. While this is a long book, it goes quickly and you won’t believe how much time has passed when it feels like it’s only been minutes. It was a book I didn’t want to put down and one where I couldn’t believe the real world hadn’t significantly changed while I was lost in the pages of this great story. It’s also a book that you will need time to decompress and come down from because you will have been so deep into it. This was a delight to read and I am so glad it’s in my collection!

Lise Gold is definitely one of my favorite authors when it comes to lesbian fiction. I loved the first installment of this series but this second book felt a little bit repetitive and flat compared to some of her previous works. It's still a very nice read, the characters are both lovable and their chemistry is great.

Loved this book. It was good to catch up with my girls Kristine and Hannah.

Hannah, who lives in London inherits her birth mother's estate in Louisiana but she has never even met her mother. Kristine, whom she had a brief affair with during a Christmas holiday in Norway, lives in Louisiana. Hannah hasn't been able to forget Kristine but will Kristine want to see her again?

Great sequel to Northern Lights and the continuation of the story of Hannah and Kristine set this time in the hot Louisiana summer. Hannah is coming of fresh betrayal and loss though her chemistry with Kristine is still right on point. It was good to see these two back together again.

Very good read, not as good as the first in the series but still ok.
Seemed to drag in places and went on longer than necessary.
A better back story about Hannah and Beth would have been good, maybe less time spent on Kristine and Hannah’s steamy scenes, they were good but there seemed to be rather a lot in this story.

I definitely liked this book better than the first in the series. There were some parts I skimmed but they were few. It was interesting finding out about Hannah’s family history right along with her. Her mom’s letters broke my heart but I’m so glad she wrote them. I really liked reading/watching Hannah’s relationship grow with Kristine. Loved learning about the friends and characters in Presley. Just being in New Orleans for the first time myself this past fall, it was kind of cool that I knew exactly where they were when they visited and could picture everything.
One thing I was curious about was that since her father was a US citizen, wouldn’t that have given her US citizenship? I was born outside the country but because my parents were US citizens, I became one. For anyone else that is curious, I ended up looking it up and it said, “There are two general ways to obtain citizenship through U.S. citizen parents: at birth, and after birth but before the age of 18.” So I guess that explains why she didn’t go that path.

Outstanding!!!

Ok I loved this couple. Kristine and Hannah’s reacquainted love was just as hot and heavy and romantic as it was in the first book.
I loved how faith brought them together again after a horrific homecoming for Hannah after a very rebirth of her self and her mind on vacation. To overcome the obstacles to get her life back and through the gift of her birth mother, rediscovered her love and ultimately finding her place in life. I loved that this was straight up love story with no hidden agendas to come at them . Enjoyable Read! On to the next book in this series. Great Job Lise Gold!
