Aria is a professional mermaid at an aquarium. She wears a fake tail and performs for visitors. All her life, she has been in love with the mythical creatures, but her whole world is turned upside down when they turn out to be more than myths and she gets caught in the middle of feuding cities from deep under the sea.
I love books about supernatural/fantasy creatures, especially mermaids and fairies, who have some magical hold on me. When I was 6, I actually wanted to be a mermaid. As someone who lives in Florida, too, I know of places where professional mermaids are a thing. I never became one, but I did enjoy reading this story about mermaids. This is a fun read for those who love YA literature and all that comes with it: drama and lots of complicated feelings.
I love mermaid books, the only bad thing I have to say is it gets a little confusing how much it goes back and forth with each character's commentary. sometimes I would have to re-read something to figure out who was doing the commentary and what sentence and then it would go back to a different character.
This was a slow burn for me. I was more pulled in by the characters than the story (which was still intriguing!). I’m excited to see what is in store for Aria and Freya in the next book!
This was a really cute story about a 17-year-old girl who works at an aquarium perfoeming as a mermaid, but finds her world turned upside down when she discovers herself surrounded by real mermaids, nymphs, etc. The MC, Aria, is sweet and well-intentioned, with a heavy dose of naive. She's the object of affection of just about everyone who meets her, and her inability to discern her own feelings causes complications. It also makes her the enemy of a rather temperamental mermaid princess. Overall, a cute YA story with likeable characters and intriguing lore.
