Someone Like Me

Rate this book
Drew Moroux has spent the last eight years in Angola State Pen, and if it were up to him, he’d rot there.

He’ll never be able to make up for what he’s done, but when he finds himself on the outside, Drew has to keep it together for the two people in his family who still believe in him.

But holding it together means working, taking care of his grandmother, and keeping his nose clean. Not spending time with the girl next door. She’s way too good for someone like him.

Evie Lalonde is great at bending over backwards — on a yoga mat and for other people. Of course, that would be easier if her family approved of her job choice. Or her values. Or the way she sees the world.

They definitely don’t approve of Drew Moroux.

But Evie knows the tortured auto mechanic with the gray eyes and rough hands needs a friend more than anything — even if he keeps pushing her away. Still, when she’s with him, friendship is the last thing on her mind.

Falling for free-spirited Evie might be the best thing Drew’s ever done, but it could cost him more than his heart.

"With this kiss, I claim her like the criminal I am."

Someone Like Me is a Contemporary Romance full of passion and heart. A coming of age story of redemption, grace, and love, Stephanie Fournet has crafted another gem of goodness! Drew Moroux has served eight years in prison for a robbery that he committed as a young adult. Through this crime, his brother was accidentally killed. Drew believes he deserves to spend the rest of his life locked away. When he is given a second chance, he meets his beautiful (and free-spirited) neighbor Evie Lalonde. Evie is a yoga instructor who loves everyone she meets. An optimist and true believer, Evie and Drew could not be more different and yet, together they form an unbreakable bond that flourishes from friendship to love.

"I need for her to be happy and whole."
Told in dual POV, Someone Like Me offers a tender and sweet romance about second chances and overcoming obstacles. The dynamics between Drew and Evie are extreme as both struggle to fight their battles. Drew is fighting the demons of his past and Evie simply wants to prove that she is strong and independent and perfect exactly the way she is! The tempo of the read is well paced as each moment seamlessly moves into the next. The secondary characters enhance the plot and the way in which Drew and Evie heal each other is simply stunning!
"Our mouths collide as though our whole lives have unfolded for this moment. Every day. Every decision. For this."
Overall, I highly recommend Someone Like Me to Contemporary Romance Fans who enjoy a sweet and tender romance set in a picturesque town in Louisiana. Stephanie Fournet is a gifted storyteller who never fails to amaze me with her beautiful characters and riveting plots!

5+ STARS!!
"I'm stronger than I look."
THIS. BOOK. My love for it ran deep. Someone Like Me was PERFECTION, a wonderful balance of romance, humor, angst and heat.

I SAVORED EVERY WORD.

Drew Moroux has spent the last eight years in prison drowning in regret and self-loathing. The consequences of his actions that fateful night when he was an 18 year old boy are undeniably permanent and far-reaching.
His shame is a tangible thing. It's so painful my own gut twists with it.
The story begins with him 'good-timing' out of the Louisiana Prison system and going to live with his grandmother where he meets Evie Lalonde, the sweet and eternally optimistic backdoor neighbor.
Evie Lalonde. I repeat her name to myself, wanting to save its music for later. It's a trick I learned in prison. Holding something in you mind is better than not holding it at all. Holding something beautiful in your mind can carry you a long way.
The contrast between Drew and his darkness . . .
"I'm not an innocent man, Evie."
. . . and Evie and her bright optimism . . .
"People think there's not enough goodness in the world, but joy and love can be made."
. . . was so heartfelt and poignant.

I love that the author not only took the time to carefully build their relationship, but in the process, she also revealed them to the reader, layer by layer.
I can't imagine living in prison, but as I've come to know Drew, it's not hard to picture him there. He wears its effects like a second skin. I read discipline in his posture. Restriction in his muscles. Deprivation in his eyes.
I can't say enough about the quality of the writing; it was quiet and powerful and emotional. I laughed, I cried, my heart filled to bursting with how much I cared about these two.

Drew's subconscious quest for redemption burned bright throughout and tugged at my heart strings. But I especially connected with Evie. Her family's constant, subtle condemnation for not sharing their materialistic values really hit home for me. And Drew's love of the qualities that alienated her from her family was a thing of beauty.
"Your innocence - your goodness - isn't a flaw. I wouldn't change it for the world."
And when it came time to really bring the story home, the author did such a fabulous job. The conflicts of the plot complimented its trajectory so seamlessly. It was perfect and I wouldn't have changed a thing.

Also worth mentioning are the secondary characters, especially Drew's grandmother. She was amazing! Somehow the author crafted every sentence Grandma Q spoke with a vividness that was unique to her. Gah! The whole book was fabulous.

Okay, enough fangirling. :D

In keeping with the principle of giving you a balanced review (lol), I will tell you that the '+' attached to the 5 star rating springs from the fact that my world view aligns so well with the characters'. While I found Evie's positivity and selfless nature to be commendable, others may find her overly naive or 'dippy'. But since my jaded heart is usually the first to point out bullshit, you may be safe. :D

Anyway, if you're a fan of any of the following in your books . . .
🗸character driven
🗸quietly beautiful prose
🗸'real' characters with 'real' problems
🗸opposites attract
🗸no out of place drama
. . . I highly recommend this one!

This is a sweet story of love, redemption and forgiveness. It's just too slow and too long with many mundane details!

*********************************************

Drew is just out of prison where he stayed for 8 years because of robbery. He still wants to stay there because he believes he doesn’t deserve any life.

His brother was with him during that robbery when they were caught. He was shot and died instantly. Drew feels an immense guilt about it because he was the one who did it for the adrenaline and his brother was there to be with him and to protect him.

His mother hates him and doesn’t forgive him. So, when he is out of prison, it is his sweet grandmother and his sister who welcome him. He starts to stay with his grandmother and she asks his cousin to find him a job in the mechanic shop where he works. Drew starts to put his life in order to make his grandmother and sister proud but he is not happy.

Then, he meets their neighbor’s daughter Evie and it all changes.

Evie is like a magic touch. She is a free spririt who sees goodness in everyone. She is very positive and she is all about yoga, energy, chakra, sun signs, gods and goddesses in mythology etc. She is different from the people Drew is used to and she wants to be friends with him. Drew doesn’t understand why and pushes her away, saying he is not safe and she should go find better people to be around.

*********************************************

Evie comes back every time no matter how much Drew pushes her away. Finally, Drew cannot find it in himself to reject the happy bubble she offers so he gives in. They become friends and then, they become lovers. They are so very sweet!

However, Evie has an evil sister who has sinister plans for her and I couldn’t believe my eyes while reading it. It was reading Cindrella all over again. Her parents are not bad people but they also do a lot of things so that Drew and Evie are not together.

*********************************************

Drew needs to learn to forgive himself and then believe that Evie’s feelings about him are real so that this relationship can go on but he constantly has self-doubts and it causes some problems. Even when he believes she loves her, Drew is sure that Evie will stop loving him one day when she comes to her senses. That was annoying and tiring. Still, whatever Evie and Drew felt very real and I believed in their feelings. It was sweet and passionate at the same time. It only was problematic because of Drew’s doubts and the fact that he sees himself not worthy of her. It takes a lot of time and lots of events to happen for Drew to finally forgive himself and believe that he deserves a happy life and Evie will be with him all his life long if he lets her.

*********************************************

Normally, I would still be OK with all this drama but the book is 400 pages so all this push&pull, self-doubts and slow-building of trust and happiness is exhausting.

Also, the book is full of details. Details about their character, thoughts and feelings are OK but details about ordinary everyday tasks are boring and there are lots of them!

If you ask me, with 100 pages less, this could be a much better book!

*********************************************

Some quick tips:

- The book is safe, there is no cheating.
- He’s not a man-wh*re, she is not a virgin.
- There is no OW drama.
- She goes on a date with someone she doesn’t like all because she is a people pleaser (something I didn’t like about Evie) but it all ends for good thanks to Drew’s caveman interference. No more drama from him.
- It is written in dual point of view.
- The writing is good and it makes you feel.
- It is a long book – longer than necessary, actually. (400 pages)

*********************************************

P.S. I read "Leave a Mark" from the same writer and it was so much better!

I loved them 🥹🥹🥹

Adding my fave highlights here since I read this on Everand and not kindle
—-
“Please,” she says, pinning me with the life-giving green of her eyes. Her voice is low, strained. “Please just let me be near you.”

————

I am the universe’s gift to Drew, and he is its gift to me

————-

She deserves someone who makes an effort.

————

Evie: I’m sorry. I’m not laughing at you, my love.

Seeing the words, the way she has claimed me as her love hits me like a shot of morphine. An intoxicating warmth rolls over me, and I almost moan in relief.
Evie loves me. What is there to fear?

————

What would Evie think of me if she knew what I had to say to my brother?

And in her weird, spooky, Evie way, she seems to read my mind.

Evie: You can say anything in front of me. I will always love you.

————-

I’ve never loved anyone, anything, like this.

I’ve never felt loved like this.

————

She squeezes my knee again. “I’m sorry if that upsets you, but I couldn’t keep it from you.” The soft sincerity in her eyes holds mine. “That would dishonor who you are to me.”

————-

I’m not an innocent man, Evie. But loving you is teaching me I can be a good man.”

—————

“Come down here.”

“What for?”

She tugs again. “Family hug.”

I squat down, already grinning. I’ve never heard her say family hug before, but Evie and these two dogs are without a doubt my immediate family, and I won’t miss an opportunity to pull them all into a hug.

She puts an arm over each dog, so I do the same, and our hands clasp over canine backs.

“Okay, dogs, Dad and I are going on a trip, and you need to wait for us here until we get back,”

What underrated author Stephanie Fournet is?!?!
Highly recommend her books!!!!

“After I walked away on Wednesday, she stayed with me. Like smoke that clings to clothes after a bonfire. Or the heat of a sunburn on skin...long after the sun has set.”

This was a sweet redemption story about forgiving yourself, moving on and accepting that sometimes you have to let go of some toxic people from your life no matter they are "family". A book about learning your own worth. I laughed and I cried...it got me in my feels.
Perfectly sweet New Adult book.

There’s something about curling up to read one of Stephanie Fournet’s novels that just feels like reacquainting with an old friend. Though I’ve never been to the Saint Streets in Lafayette, Louisiana, I’ve visited them many times through her books. They provide a vivid backdrop to her captivating stories. I am always more than happy to take a return trip to these streets and to meet the new characters that are sure to touch my heart.

Someone Like Me is a novel about forgiveness, acceptance, and second chances, and after serving eight years in the penitentiary, Drew Moroux needed all those things. Some family members turned their backs on him, unable to forgive him for his crimes. But no one was harder on him than he was. He did his time, but all the time in the world couldn’t erase what he’d done. He wore his guilt and shame like a heavy cloak, weighing him down with each memory of the pain he’d caused.

Luckily for Drew, he still had a few family members who were on his side. Grandma Quincy was, if I’m being honest, my favorite character. With her wisdom, kind heart, and her manipulative nature (which was always done with the best of intentions, of course), she not only offered him a home, but also welcomed him into her strong open arms. She was the gold standard of what a good person was.

Evie Lalonde was a free-spirited young woman who was in tune with her body, mind, and her surroundings. She believed that honesty was always the best policy and tried to live her best life. She was a people-pleaser, but only because she was just brimming with innate goodness and good intentions. Even though it hurt that her family disapproved of her profession, she knew exactly the kind of life that she wanted to live.

When Evie met Drew, she trusted her instincts and knew deep down that he was a good soul who needed kindness and friendship. Drew was determined to bear his burden and keep Evie at bay. She was everything that Drew thought he didn’t deserve, but with her persistence, he began to believe that she just might be what he needed.

It’s no secret that I am a big fan of slow burning romances. I’m a patient reader who always appreciates an author who takes their time developing the characters and their relationships. Fournet never rushed this story along. It progressed at a steady pace, allowing her readers the opportunity to truly get to know the characters.

Someone Like Me was a well-rounded novel. It broke my heart, healed it, made me root for a few characters, and made me want to shake some sense into a few others. As always, I enjoyed my time spent with the characters from Lafayette, and I am already looking forward to my next visit!

I felt everything in this book. Every emotion, every heartbreak and every cute moment.

I knew this would be a special one after the first couple of pages, the characters came alive for me and I loved them all (except those two bitches). The grandmother was my favourite character as well as Drew and Evie of course!! It was such a wonderful read filled with heartbreak, loss, true love and it held such a cute factor that I adored with all my heart. I was sobbing through most of it because it touched my soul so much. I actually contacted the author and let her know how much I loved her book!! It's such a special book and I hope everyone will read it!

(Also, I neeeeed a paperback copy pls pls pls:)

Drew and Evie

I have been looking forward to reading this book for quite awhile. I was so excited to read it. There is much to this book. Happiness, saddness, lose and fear. Drew left prison after 8 years never figuring that his future was on the other side of a fence. Meeting Evie was never in his thoughts.

It's pretty rare to find a book that is epic. (I'm lookin' at you Mists of the Serengeti by Leylah Attar ). Someone Like Me is one of those books. I'm not really an "all the feels" kinda chick. I've got enough feels in real life. I like to read fiction to escape or relax. But, I've gotta say, I didn't mind my emotions running wild for this special story.
I have a committed yoga practice that I rarely discuss. Stephanie Fournet did unbelievable justice describing the depth of the lifestyle. Evie's inner workings were a reflection of years of being conscious, growing, and self-awareness. She dealt with disrespect and judgement with integrity. I was downright motivated by her character. I loved how she encouraged Drew. They were intertwined in their destiny.
Drew had the weight of irrepressible guilt burdening him. Yet, he was able to breathe life into Evie when she was already so full of it. The captivation they shared with one another was undeniable. He became her defender, confidant, and soul mate with a carved out desperate beauty.
I'd whole heartedly recommend Someone Like Me. I'm still reflecting on aspects of it. It's definitely a re-read/ favorites shelf book. Thank you so much Melanie for this recommendation!

I absolutely loved this book. This story is one of a kind, vivid, heart-wrenchingly emotional, and has so much heart. I stress the heart part. Stephanie Fournet put so much of her heart and soul into these characters, the trials and tribulations they face, the love they feel and the importance of forgiveness. It's a story of forgiving yourself and others, starting anew, finding strength they didn't know they had, and finding inner peace. Evie's spirituality and her positivity is so refreshing, it's no wonder bad boy Drew is drawn to her, and why she's the perfect person to help him change his life around and find peace.
I love every one of her books and this one surely didn't disappoint. It's one of my favorites and very, very special to me. I will always have a kinship with it.
Please give it a chance, go into it blindly, and become completely immersed in the characters, the vivid portrayal of Louisiana and her Saint streets, and Drew's amazing grandmother. I felt like I was at home with them, going to Tribe for the first time, eating Zucchini bread, and learning all about yoga and fixing cars. It was well-researched and riveting. 5 stars

4.5 stars! I was so happy to see that Stephanie Fournet had a new book releasing, and I had to get my hands on it! Drew and Evie’s story (individually and together) pulled at my heart-strings and I was rooting for them from the very beginning.

I don’t think I’ve ever read from the perspective of a felon that served time, or a yogi, in contemporary romance - it was refreshing and drew me in quickly.

Drew is tortured and swoon-worthy, struggling to adjust and move-on after being locked up. He doesn’t believe he deserves to be out, but his grandmother is determined to get him back on his feet. I LOVED Drew’s relationship with his grandmother. I literally stopped reading at one point to call my own!

Evie is young, free-spirited, and caring. She’s just figuring things out for herself and ready to break free from her family that have gone out of their way to shelter her. I loved that Evie knew what kind of life she wanted and was determined to live her life her way, despite her family’s disapproval.

No spoilers, but Fournet makes you despise the villain, and I wasn’t really a fan of the dynamics around the conflict... I can’t pinpoint the reason why, but it may be that I just don’t like that the situation could happen in the first place. *shrug* That said, it all wraps up nicely with a sweet ending!

Evie is most definitely the yin to Drew’s yang, and their story hooks you from the start!

I received this book by accident and it was a HAPPY accident. It was such a moving, emotional book with a heck load of suspense but I found it was a bit dragged out in places and a lot of the story is made up of the characters ‘emotions’ and ‘feelings’ and it got repetitive by the end. It was so filled with emotion that I had to put the book down a lot just to let me heart and mind rest from all of it. But, all in all, the book was addictive and descriptive, the characters were well built and their personalities shone through the pages.

There’s one line in this book that was the ultimate cringe... ‘When I touch the slickness of her petals’. It made me shiver... and not in a good way. That’s one fault I can really find with this story that bothered me so much I felt I needed to wash my hands.

I loved the family drama on Evie’s side, it ended up being completely EPIC and edge-of-your-seat worthy. It was brilliantly executed and the author is a genius with coming up with that sort of storyline.

The author’s penmanship was amazing and beautiful, she loves her descriptive words a little too much but otherwise I really feel her style of writing is gripping and adds a level of drug that makes you addicted.

Brilliant book. The Best Book Accident to ever happen. Bravo.

Another FANTASTIC read from Stephanie Fournet

I have read many of Ms. Fournet’s novels and NEVER been disappointed. “Someone Like Me” is a beautiful lesson to us all that everyone deserves love and a chance at peace. Who among us has not made a mistake we wish we could undo? how many of us have been given gifts we can only try to be worthy of? I loved all the family members that were so real in their goodness, selfishness and just plain hellish-ness. Keep the books coming, Ms Fournet. You’re a star!

The character development of the story is so completely done that you are left with an accurate picture of each character.

I really, really enjoyed this book. It felt like it took a little while introducing the back stories before we met the couple. I loved Drew and his struggles after coming out of prison. It was incredibly sad how low his self worth was and that it took another’s love to help him see any merit within him. But I’m glad he got his soulmate. He deserved it.

I really bloody hated Tori and hope she has a miserable life (yes I know they aren’t real people). But by god does she need a therapist and some self awareness. What a dick! I can’t believe what she did to Drew and Evie.

I took off one star because there was an enormous amount of new age stuff in the book. And I like New Age, don’t get me wrong. I love crystals and yoga. But to have Evie (internally) talking about chakras whilst she’s having sex just took me out of the intimacy of the scene. It just felt unnecessary. It started getting annoying, a bit like when EL James kept having Anastasia Steele talk about her “inner goddess”.

I highly recommend this book! Do give it a go!

I loved reading Someone Like Me. It's a book that breaks prejudices and joins two people that couldn't be more different and yet are meant for each other.
The only downside is that towards the middle of the story the action stalls a little and there are pages upon pages of either Evie or Drew reminiscing about how the other is so perfect and how lucky they are to have found each other - or how they don't deserve each other, in Drew's case. They are - despite all their apparent flaws - just a tad too perfect to be realistic. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Evie's parents and her sociopath sister seem to be portrayed as being as awful as possible - although the sociopath sister does give up pretty quickly on her machinations, also not very consistent with all the problems she created before.
Other than that, it's a great, heartwarming book.

Completely engaging. The characters have flaws and idiosyncrasy. The smut is on pointe and the chemistry is delicious. There's a third act slide into dastardly villainy, but c'est la vie, I'm still rushing off to read more Stephanie Fournet.

Ok so I'm conflicted about this book. It's pretty straight forward. Nothing traumatic happens. The main characters are likeable. They are even a little blah. It's just the one bad character the evil sister Tori that ruined this book for me. I get it she's fictional but God she is awful. Something triggered me about her. Although there are no minority characters in this book and that's not what this book is about at all but her entitled, evil, manipulative presence triggered something in my poc existence. She's so many things I fear and despise in another human being. The book is told in pov of both Drew and Evie (mains). They are cute and maybe just too perfect. Their love is straight forward, no real complications. The main issue are all the supporting characters, they bring the drama. I wish it was more about Drew's internal struggle but he's just too nice and innocent. Altogether not a bad read. Something nice to read before bed every night this week.
