A Paranormal Halloween #2

Unhallowed Murder

Rate this book
It’s Halloween night and the Haunted Corn Maze is a madhouse. However, no one knows one of the zombies in the diorama is a dead body. There’s a reason it looks so real.

Lieutenant Veronica Woods is dressed as a Power Ranger, as are her four friends, enjoying the frights and scares in the chill autumn air. Ronnie is a tiger-shifter, and her sense of smell points her to the body, but there’s no logical reason for her to climb the small hill and traipse through the display. At least, not until she scents a group of vampires, and she bullies and coerces one of them into helping her report the crime so she can begin her investigation.

Josef is an ancient vampire with a military mindset. He was a general in his human life, and now he’s head of security for one of the most powerful vampires alive. He hasn’t had a personal relationship in decades, and has no interest in one, but the adorable little tiger shifter walks like a sex kitten and issues orders like a military general. Her people obviously respect her, and he finds he doesn’t want to leave her side when she’s ready to turn him loose.

NOTE: Unhallowed Murder can be read as a stand-alone.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Candace Blevins writes urban fantasy, paranormal romance, epic fantasy contemporary BDSM romance, and two kick-ass motorcycle club series. She’s published more than fifty books. Candace lives with her husband of twenty-four years and their two teenaged daughters. The family’s beloved, goofy, retired racing greyhounds are usually at her side as she writes, quietly keeping her company. Or sometimes not so quietly.

Her urban fantasy series, Only Human, gives us a world where weredragons, werewolves, werelions, three different species of vampires, and a variety of other mythological beings exist.

Candace's various paranormal romance series are all sister series to the Only Human series, and give some secondary characters their happily ever after.

Her Dark(ish) Faerie Tale series gives us a close-up and personal look at Queen Mab, and her Dark Underbelly series is, as you’d expect, dark and (if you’re a little twisted) oh-so-yummy.

Her contemporary Safeword series gives us characters who happen to have some extreme kinks. Relationships can be difficult enough without throwing power exchange into the mix, and her books show characters who care enough about each other to fight to make the relationship work. Each couple in the Safeword series gives the reader a different take on the lifestyle.

Happy Halloween from Candace Blevins. Bringing us another paranormal romance filled with suspense and a little romance.

Neither Josef or Veronica are looking for love. Veronica is a Lieutenant with the police department and doesn't have time for it. Josef just isn't interested. But, even in the middle of a murder investigation, love doesn't wait. Helping her solve the murder is important to Josef as his heart becomes more and more involved. Veronica knows that there could be problems between the Amakhosi and the Abbott but her heart told her that Josef was her soul mate. As the murder investigation takes a turn, with a little nudge from Josef, and they acknowledge their feelings, they can't help but start taking the next steps to sharing the rest of their lives together.

Unhallowed Murder was one of Candace Blevins' tamer stories. I love her characters. There are always so many facets to them and Ms. Blevins always lets us see them all. And I also enjoy the way she moves a story along … there seriously was no down time throughout this story. It moved and flowed off of the pages making it a suspenseful and intriguing story. But, that's what I have come to expect when I pick up any book from Candace Blevins.

Happy Halloween from all of us at Guilty Pleasures. Please enjoy this wonderful paranormal romance set on the spookiest day of the year. You will not be disappointed.

Halloween isn't complete if there isn't a spooky fun house. For Veronica Woods aka Ronnie, she's been coaxed to dress up as one of the Power Rangers. Expecting a night of fun with friends, the last thing she expects is to have to pull out her badge and work a homicide. When an extra body shows up in the zombie display, things are about to get heated.

This story is a new direction for Ms. Blevins and I love it. She easily marries up a murder mystery into her paranormal romance world. Not sure what to expect, I enjoyed the procedural writing style. It makes me think and try to figure out... "whodunnit?" This stimulates and engages my mind. I'm following along with Ronnie to piece the clues together and figure out the killer. I am pretty happy that I figured it out early on. This is because Ms. Blevins laid enough clues out for me to see the big picture and pinpoint who committed the crime. Similar to how Ms. Nora Roberts started off in Romance and expanded into Mystery, I can see Ms. Blevins take off in the same way.

This is more than a murder mystery. There is also a romance brewing between Ronnie and a new to me character, Josef. Josef is a centuries old vampire who respects someone who can take charge. It's been centuries since a female of any sort intrigued him. I'm mixed about Josef. He's the silent type whose still waters run deep. I think we haven't seen the real Josef yet because he is on his best behaviour. It could be my personal preference, but I found Josef to be more erotic when he fed off of females other than Ronnie. This romance is vanilla and it as such, my attention wandered away from the sexual interludes between the two. Their relationship and interaction was more interesting to me than their physical acts of intimacy. At first I thought the story may be more kinky because of how Josef first fed on a female wolf. That had my blood heating up and my engine revving. Then my sex engine stalled and shut down. This is not a bad thing because then I focused more on the plot and the character development.

For those who have read the Only Human series, there are a few teaser scenes in here that contain more meaning... specifically the ones involving Nathan. I liked how Nathan's issues with the vampires is woven into this story line because it gives this world a more cohesive feel. Seeing how the shifter and undead world can overlap makes relationships complicated. The layering of threads makes this a richer world building and provides a depth that is more three dimensional. I am in awe of authors who can do this so well. This book contains many elements that will appeal to a wider audience. Highly recommended to paranormal romance readers and mystery lovers.

Ronnie, a police lieutenant tiger shifter, and Josef, a very old vampire, meet one night when they are both attending a Halloween festival. Even though both were supernatural beings in the same city, they had never had a reason to meet. The flow of their meeting and mutual attraction really seemed to be organic and believable. The romantic side of this relationship was lovely and as sweet as one could believe between a shifter and a vampire.

The crime that led to them meeting was both a good reason for them to meet and was one that would lead to them seeing each other in a competent, similar interests way. The pacing of how the crime was found out and solved kept me interested in that as well as the romance.

All in all, I think this book could be read as a stand-alone by a reader new to this author. It also is great for those of us who have read all of this author's supernatural books.

I have yet to feel that any of her characters are repetitive in nature even if the same types of paranormals are in the book. The couples are all unique in several ways, which keeps me coming back to read each book.

This paranormal murder mystery romance takes place around Halloween which enhances the atmosphere to the mystery as the strong, bold characters discover a body while out celebrating with friends. The mystery augments the story with thrilling suspense and keeps reader guessing ‘who done it?’ right along with Ronni and Josef in this fast paced and thrilling story. And readers get the thrill of trying to discover clues and find evidence right alongside the characters as the author paints such vivid imagery which makes it easy for readers to imagine each and every scene. The plots is fast paced and flows smoothly throughout the story with lots of electrical chemistry flowing between Ronni and Josef which adds lots of hot and spicy romance to the story. The romance is the story starts with each of the characters being intrigued with each other and they kind of negotiate their way into a relationship which builds the suspense of the romance. Once again, the Chattanooga Supernaturals provide a rip roaring romance that keeps readers entertained from beginning to end, which is kind of fitting since it’s about a vampire and a tiger shifter. The story can be read alone without reading the other books in the series and it is a bit different being it is a murder mystery romance but it is still part of the fascinating world full of wonderful characters that reader can’t get enough of.

An unusual offering from Candace Blevins in terms of it being a compact but full-bodied procedural cop-murder mystery, though fundamentally it was all Blevins at her paranormal best, set in the fabulous world of the Chattanooga Supernaturals with nods to many of that world's favourite inhabitants .

While Josef has all the requisite characteristics of one of Chattnaooga's finest vampire specimens, and ultimate perfect partner in...um...un-life?, this is decidedly Ronnie's story. The Tigress puts me in mind of Kirsten O'Shea in her resiliency and professionalism and general togetherness. And while this is definitely a romance, the focus is on how she came to do what she does so well, how all of that makes her who she is today, and its all seamlessly accomplished in the weave of the tale itself. This is not to say Josef's role is marginalized or secondary in any way, but the strong female lead shines through, at least for me, à la Blevins...

So much so that this reader kind of hopes the murder-mystery idea will morph into its own (companion) series. Oh the places we will go...

if some said to me 10 years ago that I would go from Pride and Prejudice and Twilight as an idea for a romance novel to a supernatural story involving a vampire, tiger (and a whole bunch of supernatural drama queens) in a middle of a murder mystery set in Chattanooga, I would call you crazy !! but then, somewhere along the way (2014. to be precise) I discovered Candace, and my romance streak took a turn - for good. Now I love my romance with a twist and supernatural political drama.
Girl, gimme !!!

Ronnie (Veronica) is a Lieutenant that is a big girl who knows how to handle herself and finds herself in need of a knight in (dare I say sparkly *wink wink* *Candace, please don't kick my ass*) shining armor that has her back, when all he wants to do is rescue her. Joseph is old (you get the vibe from the name!) and is set in his ways but the little kitty is about to knock him on his ass and make him jump back up. but he is set on being the boss and helps her in the process. ah love....
its a love story made in supernatural dreamland, thrown in together with a twisted murder mystery (cause we need a break between all the dopey goo goo eyes these two are about to set on each other - joke people!!! it helps with the relationship >> that's a first) and you have yourself a Candace love potion wrapped in a awesome book.

the story is sharp, it will keep you glued to the book and, I can't help myself, we get to see our favorite kitty cat - Nathan, soooo its a win-win for me. The characters are great, Joseph is there almost from the beginning but now he finally gets a voice and personality and I LOVE IT !!!! they both are complex but not overly, and I just LOOOOOOOVED every minute of it. While reading Candace's books, ever since Nathan and Kirsten, I am loooooving her feline characters sooo much, and this one didn't disappoint. literary, I was reading and purrrrrrr-in at the same time. And mind you, I am a 100% dog person. so...

does kitty wanna come and play ???? read the book to find out, you won't regret it !!

I loved the energy between Josef and Veronica (Ronnie), they were way more than sparking, there was a definite current connecting these two!

First and foremost, this is a murder mystery, where what appears only leads to more twists and turns, as a case needs to be solved. As our trusty tigress uses her policing skills to bring justice to a young woman's death. She is balancing her jurisdiction with the FBI, and fighting her own personal demons, while doing so. She enables the help of Josef, a vampire who has been around for many millennia, and heads up security for the head vampire in this area, The Abbot

Ronnie and Josef have an instant attraction, which they work through, as they solve the crime. She has personal preferences for very legitimate reasons, and he only wants what is best for her. The unexpected events of their attraction happen alongside the many facets of the investigation. It builds as they discover more about each other, and solidify their relationship over time

The story gives an insight into what is real, and different, from what it appears, on a night where everyone dresses up to be something else. Evil can appear wholesome, innocence can be an illusion, and the real reason why Roman statues depict men's physiques in a certain way

Candace Blevins has taken us back into her area of the Chattanooga Supernaturals for something a little unusual for her - a murder mystery.
It's Halloween and among frienship and dress up a murder is discovered by tiger shifter Ronnie a police Lieutenant. Not being able to point out the corpse hidden among the zombie display so when she scents some vampires she sends out a request for assistance and Joseph, one of the ancients, comes to her aid.
Both feel the instant chemistry between them. Joseph volunteers his help reading the thoughts of the witnesses in order to spend more time with her as well as help Ronnie with her case.
The charismatic General and the enthusiastic Tigress begin a journey of discovery building a foundation for their endearing romantic relationship.
It wouldn't be a Candace Blevin's book without some heat and while there is plenty of that to be found it doesn't overwhelm this unusual storyline of good versus evil.
Ms. Blevins has taken some of the familiar characters and seemlessly blended them with new friends in recognizable places which I found greatly appealed to me.
Bottom line is I enjoyed this book and have no problem suggesting that you read it as well and will like it as much as I do.

Ms. Blevins knocks this out of the ballpark, nothing is more fun on Halloween than a murder mystery! Right? of course she adds her special touch making it her own. I found Unhallowed Murder wonderfully entertaining from the actual mystery to the sass and quips between the characters.
( still have to say with all of his faults I still love The Abbott)

Josef's his quiet dominance I think that's the word I'm looking for just sets your girly parts all a twitter. His confidence and patience is icing on any cake. He didn't rush, he planned and strategized as any great general would have. Careful at maintaining what he was as well as giving and making concessions.

Ronnie what a character I really liked her and me liking the heroines is rare *laughs* she exuded strength and passion for what she did, even as the skeleton's rattled in her closet she kept it together, she is all about the victims and getting them justice in a world mixed with humans and supers I have to say whew! good on you girly. ( still love Nathan)

a bevy of secondary characters that were awesome as well. The story full and rich a page turner. I'm sure there were a few times I was even like WTF! and the heat OMG. The detail in the interviews, the care of her team *nods* amazing story loved it! Enjoy

I was rather surprised to find myself reading a police procedural from Candace Blevins. Veronica is an extremely in-charge police lieutenant who discovers a corpse at a Halloween carnival (she is also a tiger shifter and smelled the body) while she is relaxing with friends. She enlists the help of local vampires to help with the situation -- and one of them, Josef, is deeply attracted to her.

Much of the first 2/3 of the book involves the police procedural of tracking down suspects and dealing with arrests, interrogations, and trial. It is not really a "mystery", per se, since Veronica can smell falsehoods and Josef can read minds -- that certainly makes investigations easier. But the police procedural aspects are well-done, especially since Veronica and Josef must always keep their abilities out of sight of her co-workers.

The rest of the story is about the growing affection and romance between the two, dealing with a truly monumental age gap and Veronica's deep trauma from sexual abuse.

Quite a delightful book.

I loved this mystery paranormal story that Candace introduced us to. Ronnie is a Lt. with the police department and Josef is a vampire, they meet because of a dead body. Here the mystery begins and we are taken on a journey through police procedurals, which are very fascinating. Also, along the way, our main characters are feeling a spark between them, will they make anything out of it?

I’ve said this before and will probably say it again, I love how strong the women are that Candace writes, they may not be strong in muscle but they are also strong in mind, some are both. As Josef and Ronnie get to know each other, they find obstacles from the past. IF they want to continue with their relationship, they will have to find a way to overcome those obstacles.

Great job with the murder mystery and finding a way to make sure that we are given an outcome and, in my opinion, just deserves to the culprit or culprits.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

A scrumptious addition to the Supernatural series
When Lieutenant Ronnie Woods, head of the Homicide division, Tiger Shifter, and Josef, ancient Roman general, Vampire, head of Abbott's security, meet on Halloween night, it is over a dead body.
Both are wary, but intrigued by each other. Josef the perfect scheming gentleman and Ronnie, the luscious spitfire.
It doesn't take much scheming by Ronnie for Josef to elect himself her helper in solving a murder.
During the course of working together, they grow ever closer.
But, will they or won't they follow their urges instead of adhering to the unwritten law, that Vampires and Shifters do not mix?
As a bonus we get a Halloween party attended by Shifters, Vampires, Humans, all in silly costumes and even the Amakhosi makes a short appearance!

I loved it! It was almost perfect, I didn't want it to end. I love strong female lead and this one was very strong but still have trauma and issues she struggled with . I love how skilled and brave she was. The story was fast paved and it reminded me of the In Death series with the dynamic of Eve and Roarke. Josef was similar to Roarke with his powerful and billionaire aura. I like how they accommodate each others to make their relationship work I like that other previous characters were also integrated in the history. The story was drama free which I really appreciated. Their relationship is very sweet but I am wondering how she will continue to live with her immortal vampire.

In this book Candance introduces us to a new supernatural Veronica or Ronnie. She's a police detective. When she stumbles upon a dead body, she is with her human friends. So, she reaches out to see if there are other supernaturals around. Since it's Halloween the vampires are out and she connects to one of them. The connection between them physically is pretty instant which on some level confuses Ronnie. She doesn't have a good history with vampires. But it doesn't take long before they are a couple. Their relationship develops while he is helping with her murder case.
Surprisingly there is no kink in this book. It centers more on their relationship and her case. Which makes it just a great love story! If you love Candance's books then you will really enjoy this book!

Love this book. Josef is an ancient Vampire who hasn't been interested in having a relationship for decades. Then he meets Veronica aka Ronnie and she makes him feel alive again. He wants to see if there is something there, but Ronnie isn't so sure. She has to be the topper in any relationship and Nathan tells her there is no way Josef is the type to let her dominate the structure. She finally caves and for the first time she lets a man take control and she is freed from a horrible past that has had a stronghold on her for her entire adult life. Josef is not the type to let her walk away he plans to make her see they have more than just a casual connection.

I LOVED THIS STORY! This may be the most vanilla thing I’ve read from this author but that doesn’t make it any less sexy or fun to read. We have an interesting murder, an ancient vampire and a were tiger police lieutenant. This story is terrific and I can’t say much without spoilers but if you like strong women and smart men you will totally enjoy this. This story deals with the worst type of humans but the author adds in enough comic relief to keep it from being too dark.

Another great one

This shorter book still delivers a punch.

It is a sweet romance who done it. Candace Blevins refuses to compromise on content including strong female characters and research.

We get to see Nathan in protective mode, The Abbott and Spense, Kendra and Eric and so many others. I loved seeing more of Josef and Ronnie but wish I could have more.

I wouldn’t rush out to buy this book but it’s a decent read. I like the H & h , they’re a good fit together. I was more interested in the political fucks than the romance or sex between them. The mystery wasn’t overly mysterious but I liked how they worked together. 2.5 stars

My favorite of the Chattanooga Supernaturals series. Josef and Ronnie are a great couple, complementing each other's strengths and weaknesses. Yes, it's a bit of "insta-love" but their relationship does develop over time. The love story gets pretty much equal time with the mystery (although the "who done it" was pretty transparent), which I appreciated. Ronnie is a super character and I hope we see more of her and Josef in the future books.
I liked seeing Nathan in this story. For once, he seemed sensitive to the needs of his pride. Sometimes he seems a little OTT in the dominance/punishment department and in the "Only Human" series, I've begun to wonder why anyone puts up with him, but it was nice to see his involvement with Ronnie in a territorial but non-sexual way.

A Halloween murder...the perfect setup for this fabulous love story that brings together a vibrant, tough as nails police lieutenant and an sexy, ancient vampire. Ronnie and Josef, oh how I loved this couple. At first she's wary but intrigued by this quiet but commanding vampire. He has personal rules about relationships but breaks every one for the spitfire shapeshifter. This romance plays out against the backdrop of murder that turns into something so much bigger than anyone bargained for.
