It was in Manchester, England in 1965, when the police were called to a possible crime scene at the residence of Ian Brady and girlfriend Myra Hindley. What they found in the upstairs spare bedroom were the remains of 17-year-old Edward Evans, who had been cut into pieces with an axe.
After an investigation and search, the police found two suitcases that were full of graphic pictures and a videotape of a young 10-year-old girl, Lesley Ann Downey who had been missing for months. The pictures showed Leslie tied up and tortured. The tape recorded the assault, and when heard at the police station, made people cry and some even vomit.
The mysteries about to unfold shocked not only the UK, but also the entire world. Soon they would become known as the ‘Moors Murders’ − one of the most infamous serial murder cases to come out of Britain.
This book by journalist Alan R. Warren not only reviews the real facts and evidence, describes what REALLY happened behind the closed doors of Brady and Hindley, but also includes actual letters from Ian Brady from the last few years of his life. These give us a unique insight into the mind of Brady; his loves, his hates, and his beliefs in the world of today!
After reviewing several documentaries and reading many of the books already published, I realized that there were many things left unsaid about this case. Even though Myra claimed innocence by not being there when the rapes and murders happened, I suggest that not only was she there, but she was intimately involved; in both the murders and the rapes.

A Special Note from the author... "On Tuesday, April 2, this past Autism Awareness Day 2019, I decided to let my fans of both radio and writing that I myself am autistic. The struggle for me to speak the words that I could only read has taken many years of work and practice in order to fool broadcasters into hiring me for radio. Even then I kept is secret as I worked to allow the writer in my mind to be able to get those words on paper. I dedicate all of my public works to any others out there struggling with the same challenge that I have, as well as any obstacles you might have in accomplishing your dreams." - Alan R Warren
The author provides information about the early lives of Myra Hindley and Ian Brady, continuing with how they met at the place where they both worked and leading to their relationship and the murders they committed together.
Their victims were randomly selected children. They took the children to Saddleworth Moor where the children were raped, murdered, and buried in the moor. The last murder was different in that Brady picked up a young man in a bar and brought him home. He murdered his victim in the presence of Myra's brother-in-law.
I’ve read a lot of books and done a lot of research on this case, and I found this short book to be one of the most information packed straight to the point accounts I’ve read. Some information I know to be misprinted etc, for example the name of Brady’s high school, hence the 4 star rating, but all in a very interesting read, ideal for someone with little to no knowledge of the case who wants to learn more.
I picked this up after reading a book that mentioned the murders. The book gives a pretty good history of the murders, and the murderers are not glorified. It is a good, complete history.
The book opens with the gruesome discovery of Edward Evans’s dismembered body, setting the tone for a chilling exploration of Brady and Hindley’s reign of terror. From there, Warren guides readers through the shocking evidence that came to light—haunting photographs, a videotape of ten-year-old Lesley Ann Downey’s torment, and the police investigation that revealed the true extent of the pair’s depravity.
What makes this book stand out is not just the recounting of well-documented events, but the new perspective Warren brings. By examining letters written by Ian Brady in his final years, he provides readers with an unsettling window into Brady’s mind—his obsessions, grievances, and warped worldview. Warren also challenges long-held claims of Myra Hindley’s supposed innocence, arguing convincingly that her role in the murders was far deeper and more complicit than she ever admitted.
Unlike many accounts that sensationalize, Warren presents the facts with respect for the victims, while still confronting the disturbing realities head-on. His research is thorough, drawing on evidence, past publications, and firsthand sources to paint a vivid yet balanced picture of a case that continues to haunt true crime history.
Moors Murders is a chilling, thought-provoking, and essential read for anyone interested in true crime or criminal psychology. Warren doesn’t just retell the story—he digs deeper into the unanswered questions, offering fresh insights into Brady and Hindley’s partnership and the monstrous crimes that shocked the world.
This is a must read if you are interested in the Moors Murders. I have seen plenty of documentaries and crime shows about this case, and all have missed the point of the victims being raped by both Ian Brady and Myra Hindley. Myra would lure the children into her car, take them to the moors or their house, and the females were raped and killed by her. while the males were raped and killed by Brady. there are also some letters from Brady from prison just before he died.
Fascinating read regarding one of Britain's most notorious serial killer couples. The author delves into the early lives of Brady and Hindley giving the reader an insight into the couples lives before they met one another and how they operated their heinous acts in later years. A must read for anyone interested in the Moor's Murders and true crime in general.
This book was very well done. No frills, just direct reporting of what was said in trial papers, letters, journals, etc. The reader can make up his/her own mind on who was telling the truth - Ian or Myra - without the influence of the author's own conjecture. Enjoyed this book.
I absolutely loved this book. it gives a lot of details and also included never before seen letters from Brady the murderer just before he died in prison.
