Small town secrets are hard to keep, and those within Burning Falls, harder still…

When Cindy Lowell leaves her cushy job in New York City and returns to her childhood home, she thinks it’s to care for her elderly grandmother, but something deeper is calling her. Despite her attempts to stay focused on her “fresh start”, one charismatic stand-offish jerk named Chase Martin is making that near impossible. The attraction is burning and electric, but she can’t help the feeling he is hiding something from her…something big.

Chase cannot help his immediate animal attraction to “New-Girl-In-Town”, Cindy Lowell. Trouble is she’s a bit too curious about her new home. His job as leader of the bear clan is to protect the town and its citizens, at all costs. Their secrets are meant to stay just that: secret. Even as he tries to negotiate his growing attraction to Cindy, Chase struggles with demons of his own.

Caught up as they are in their own dramas, neither of them recognizes a new threat circling Burning Falls. Will they wake up to it in time to save the town? And as everything starts to blow up, can they handle the secrets they discover?

Join Cindy as she steps into the hidden world of Burning Falls, where magic lurks around every corner and nothing is what it seems!

Also included is a short preview of another story, Dragon Protector.

This story contains no cheating, no cliff hangers, and of course has a HEA! ; )

Hey all! I hope you love my tales...there is a lot happening in Burning Falls! But don't worry (Be happy!)...the mystery is just starting... the first story in my new series in the neighboring town of Cave Bay will be out sooooon! I love weaving all things paranormal - and maybe even a little magical - with a healthy dose of Alpha smexiness, into my stories. I hope you love reading them as much as I love writing them! If you loved Burning Falls you have a lot to look forward to in Cave Bay...

No fated mates... 3 stars!

Because I read so many shifter romances, I have certain aspects that I have come to expect from the genre--mainly the fated mates trope. I love the fantasy of finding your fated mate and your animal half knowing instinctually that they are THE ONE.

Not only did Chase never have that aha moment, but he also kept pushing Cindy away and was an absolute jackass to her! He never fully groveled for being a jerk, and I was so disappointed when Cindy just forgave him without even an apology from him.

I also found it a bit weird that these Shifters didn't know what they were until their mid-twenties...why are children sheltered from the truth that long?! If they're worried about keeping their nature hidden, keeping everyone in the dark doesn't seem very prudent. Overall, this was a definite miss for me.

Short Review

I liked the character development but I wished the author could have fleshed out more of the town history. I know in later books it's supposed to develop even more and the reader gets to see that information in stages but I like to have a little more information before continuing a series. I still think of continuing this one though.

The plot is very interesting, mysterious and paranormal. I would love to see how this expands into the later books. The take on the shifters and how this affects their human side it's new to me, I haven't seen it done like this before. Not that I could remember, at least.

This is a great story for those that like paranormal romance, bear shifters, wolf shifters, witches, mystery and old town secrets.

So much

So much happens in this story, it's amazing! The scenes are very vivid and seem like a true small town. The emotions of all involved are felt so truly that it's as if you're the character!

Just bad...sorry

Do not agree with the glowing reviews.
Spoilers below.
The main characters were just uugghh. Cindy was a young woman who after discovering the coworker she is sleeping with is also sleeping with another coworker just up and leaves. Seemed pretty immature and extreme of a reaction. Would have worked better if she had other negatives going on or explained. She’s back home with grandma for just a few days and is attacked by 3 men in an alleyway. Chase, who she barely just met saves her. They then immediately have sex, despite the fact 3 men just attempted to rape her. Chase somehow goes from being overwhelmed by the men to getting the upper hand. He is a jerk after sleeping with her and for the rest of story until about 90%, and then he’s just a totally different person with no buildup or actual explanation as to why. He keeps telling the sex and she mean nothing, just some random fun. She keeps interacting with him for a reason never explained. There is never any use of protection and given how they discuss woman he should probably have a couple of kids running around.
Cindy remains immature pretty much the whole book.
Jackson, best friend to Chase, is the community dick who does have a kid already who his parents are apparently spending more time with then him. They all talk about woman as things or “new talent”, like a bunch of frat boys.
There is zero world building at all, plus a thrown in and random military history for Chase with equally random PTSD flashbacks. There was minimal actual story about shifters and shifting, which doesn’t happen until adulthood or never at all, what???
Honestly, after reading all the good reviews I thought it would get better at some point. It didn’t and the ending was so abrupt and odd.
I’m glad this was a KU book, I would’ve been more unhappy if I paid for it.

I've read the first three books in the series now (well, the three that are out) and I've got a lot of the same issues with the series as a whole, plus individual issues with characters. So, if you're reading all three of my reviews here, some points will be repeated.

I'm not crazy about the shifter world here in Burning Falls. People don't know they're shifters, might not ever shift even, and are all really very very normal otherwise. Like, they can't even tell if someone else is a shifter, despite all the chatter about heightened senses. That's part of the fun of shifter romances and urban fantasy in general, right - the magic and supernatural parts of the story. With the magic in Burning Falls, it just never really felt like things were magic, if you understand what I'm trying to say.

The suspenseful part of the plot was weak-ish. There are lots of plot threads laid out but very few of them are developed to my satisfaction. Like, what actually is the Kon Mar? A treaty? A belief system? A shifter way of life? It seemed to evolve through the three books, but everyone just refers to it as a given that we understand. Plus, what were the invading shifters actually looking for? Territory? Land? Something about the falls? We never find out.

Maybe because there wasn't much of the 'fated mates' content, and not even much about the effects of being 'in season,' but it never really struck me like there was tons of chemistry between Chase and Cindy. Just sex. Plus, Chase ran hot and cold, mostly dealing with his not-quite-seamlessly-integrated-plotwise PTSD flashbacks. Made him kinda a jerk, in all honesty.

A funny point in the series (for me at least) was the character of Lisa S., Head Librarian. My own head librarian (my boss) is also a Lisa S. So that made me smile. And she's a big enough character, that I added the book to my Librarian Character shelf.

HEA for Cindy and Chase, no cheating, no cliffhangers (though lots of plot holes). Glad I found it as a freebie on Kindle. Still, maybe it was the plot threads that could be developed in the future - makes me wonder where this world is going. Maybe I'm just looking for a nice bit of escapism this weekend (something paranormal romances usually are) and I'm a glutton for punishment so I keep trying, but I keep reading these books. We'll see when I finally give up.

I’m actually a bit torn on HER KEEPER BEAR the first story in the Burning Falls Shifters series, and that doesn’t happen often. Usually, I’m all in on a series or I’ll pass it by without regret. But this time, there is something pulling at me to give it a shot, give it time to develop so I’m going to go with that feeling (for now, at least).

As the first story in a series, HER KEEPER BEAR has world-building to be done, especially as there are several different supernaturals that live in and around this small town. We have the obvious shifters, witches, perhaps vampires and who knows what else we’ll discover as time moves on. So that takes a bit of setting up the rest of the stories yet to come. I get that, and I expect it.

What I’m torn on is the characters and the attitude of the males we’ve met so far. I’m not really comfortable with some of their conversations, even if it is just “guys talking”. There is such secrecy surrounding all the residents of Burning Falls that I’m not yet certain what is part of that secrecy and what is actually different personalities. While the first book can set up a lot it cannot set up everything – or what would be the point of another story, right? And, also, to be frank, this is my first story by Cynthia Wilde so I’m learning her storytelling style as well.

So, it comes down to am I engaged enough to take the risk, and time to pick up the next story in this series. And that answer would be yes. I enjoyed parts of Cindy and Chase’s romance, a lot of it was shrouded in secrecy that made understanding why Chase acted as he did an uncertainty to me. I’ll give this series the chance to capture me, I think that’s only fair. And my curiosity is engaged now so I want to know more details, and I’m hoping that the next story will give me enough to continue with the series to the ending. At this point, time will tell. HER KEEPER BEAR is a good story and my rating will reflect that, I just do not know yet if it’s a series for me.

I read this title through my Kindle Unlimited subscription.

The description of this book interested me because it has been a while since I've read a good small town shifter romance. Overall the book was well written and it definitely gave me the cozy vibe that I love, but alas, I did find parts of it lacking. Honestly, for many parts of this book I was only half paying attention which cause the book to be read quite fast. I was waiting for the book to have some more meaningful moments, but then all of a sudden the book was over. There was nothing wrong with the story itself, I just wasn't involved in the story as much as I would have preferred.

What I did not like was how at the end it was "discovered" that Cindy was a half shifter. I feel that somehow her mom would have told her about this before they became estranged. OR I think her grandma should have talked to her about this sooner. What if she had shifted when she was in New York? Her family left too much up to chance under the veil of protecting her and the town,

I also did not enjoy how after they slept together they just didn't really talk or anything. I understand that Chase was so into her that he couldn't help but sleep with her, but I would have preferred if they had had more interactions with each other before they sealed the deal because it seemed too sudden.

But once I did start paying closer attention to the book, it was a lovely story. Quite cozy, cute interactions with other characters. Overall the book was fine, but it didn't keep my attention as well as I thought it would. I liked the story enough to buy the next book in the series.

I was so intrigued by this fascinating bear shifter romance that I could not stop reading until the last page was turned. The plot is well-written & full of suspenseful incidents. The characters are quite complex individuals with their own responsibilities & goals.
There is: a woman going to her grandmother with the intentions of looking after her (Cindy), a rather unique grandmother (Nan), a bear shifter & leader of the bear clan (Chase), various kinds of shifters, a latent shifter, witches, magic, twists & turns, intrigue, suspense, PTSD, secrets, mystery, danger, enemies, threats, devious plans, conflict, attractions, prophecies, shifting, shock, attempted drug manipulation, anger, disbelief, memories, eavesdropping, territorial play, confrontation, injured, mental connections, happiness, love, some steam & a tantalizing glimpse of another book.
I would recommend this bear shifter romance to people who like to read this genre.

Cynthia has written a unique entertaining story with this first book in the Burning Falls Shifter series. I was hooked from the first page and read this amazing book in one sitting. Cindy leaves New York and returns home to care for her grandmother. She is focused on a fresh start in her home town. Chase a bear shifter is leader of the bear clan and is in charge of protecting the citizens and the town of Burning Falls. Something sinister is brewing around the hidden world of Burning Falls. Can Chase and Cindy uncover the mystery before it's too late? “Her Keeper Bear” is teeming with suspense, sexual tension, mystery, surprises and romance, all leading to a spectacular conclusion. I loved this story and I'm absolutely looking forward to the next installment in this series.

🐾 I enjoyed this ❤ romance with a confused heroine who stumbled into a paranormal world hidden beneath the surface in her small hometown. There's plenty of fighting action, turf wars,🔥passionate clinches and intrigue, some odd antics from the heroine's grandmother Nan, and secrets exposed as the community fights to maintain its security and integrity. The hero is a veteran with PTSD and a heavy burden he's afraid to share. It's pretty fast-paced; I read it in one sitting. The ending was a bit awkward. It seemed an attempt to set the stage for further adventures in a subsequent story or series, but it just made this story end on a flat note for me.

This is a NON-SPOILER REVIEW. Her Keeper Bear by Cynthia Wilde is the first book in the Burning Falls Shifters series. Here is a fast paced, quick read that is a great introduction to the Burning Falls Shifters and it's residents. Cynthia Wilde gives us a plethora of strong characters and interesting situations in this story. While this is Chase and Cindy's story, we get a good glimpse at life in Burning Falls. I would have liked a bit more back story, but I get the feeling that the underlying storyline will develop with each new installment of this storyline. Packed with action, drama, humor, magic, mystery and mayhem, you won't be able to read this story and not fall in love with the residents of Burning Falls.

A good story but needs a bit of proofreading and corrections.

Cindy has come home to Burning Falls from network after she caught her boyfriend with his assistant in intercourse. But things are strange at home, she is almost assaulted downtown after telling a real estate agent to leave her gran alone, since she had no interest in selling. Then while hiking she sees a bear, then she sees the guy who saved her from the assault turn into a bear and go after four huge Wildcats. He turned into a bear. Wow,is there any chance they can be together again after that? There is another battle, the bad guys get defeated, and there is a happy ending.

Nice quick read

This introductory story has some action, some steamy scenes and many secrets revealed. It moves quickly, and heats up quickly too. The tone is mysterious with a lot being hidden from others in town. The storyline is more action than character driven, but there is a bit of character development also. Since there are 3 more friends I expect to see 3 more stories at least. There are some twists in here to keep things even more interesting. If this sounds like a shifter romance you would like, try it! Enjoy!

Chase and Cindy

Cindy walks in on her boyfriend and his assistant, quits her New York job, and returns to her grandmother's home in Burning Falls. She sees Chase Martens, who was four years ahead of her in school. When leaving the library, Cindy I is attacked in the alley by three men, and Chhase saves her. .The story is about the "bad guys" attempts to take over the territory and Chase's group's protecting their town. It is a good story.

Intriguing

Cindy, the main character , returned home from New York to Burning Falls to find things the same but different. She was rescued by Chase from three sleazy men in an alley way. Chase and Cindy found themselves extremely attracted to each other. Being a bear shifter, Chase was concerned for Cindy’s safety from some unsavory people/shifters in town. You’ll need to read the book to find out what happens to Cindy.

Not certain I like this one. I feel like there is too much missing, the dialog is too fast and the ending was too easy to solve. Plus I have questions like how does she learn to be a shifter and do the others accept her into the pack? We never know because the next book jumps to Alex. It was too quick mostly because both Chase and Cindy both keep running away from everything so the truth is in peices. It makes the whole story confusing.

Loved this book a good read

Her bear keeper is a brilliant story how a town is protected by shifters but most of the residents aren’t aware of this but a love story of two people one a shifter the other a shifter but doesn’t know she is finding love and learning what she is. I couldn’t put this book down until I had read it all in one go

Burning Falls Chase & Cindy

Interesting premise of hidden and latent shifters but I think the story of Chase & Cindy hooking up and not wanting to be together was rushed. The reveal someone of being a shifter was introduced without a lot of background and it was confusing. However, I will read the second book.

Love Bears

This is a fairly well written story of a young girl who has decided NY city life is not working for her and she returns to her small town. She is staying with her grandmother but starts to notice things are not as they first seem. Mature readers should read this story to find out what happens and how she found her HEA.

This took a little bit to get into, but once it picks up it gets good. I would have liked a little more story actually, I felt like there were a lot of ends that were left open in a way. The romance was give and take away type of style, until the male character figures it out, but sometimes you just want to smack him.. I did enjoy reading this story and would probably read it again.

A nice story

This is book one and a nice story. However, the connection between the two lead characters Chase and Cindy fell flat. The storyline was good but the execution of that and building the romantic relationship was lacking. I believe if the author did some connecting chapters and built the relationship more it would help lessen the choppy scenes.

This story was about a bear shifter who falls for a young lady that has returned to her hometown. There are mysteries to solve and family secrets to uncover. The story moves along at a good pace and not once did I lose interest. That makes it a winner in my world.
