A stand-alone novel, 2nd in the Extinction series.
Throughout decades of military service, Earl Koke has never met a challenge he couldn’t surmount or an enemy he couldn’t pummel into submission. Now, with his career nearing its end, he looks forward to retirement and enjoying a peaceful easy life.
When a massive solar storm threatens to reduce the Earth to ashes, Earl is among the last few to reach the safety of the ark starships waiting in orbit. As the vessels prepare to leave, mankind’s survival seems certain, but sabotage to their navigation system sends them millions of lightyears off course.
Lost in outer space, Earl’s dream of a comfortable life vanishes along with humanity’s bright future. As a platoon leader, he can handle wrangling politicians and even civil war, but when their ship’s artificial intelligence decides to take control of human society, he’s out of his league.
Desperate times often call for extreme measures, but opposing a vastly superior mind is suicide. Earl has faced long odds before though, and giving up just isn’t in his nature.
Desperation is the 2nd in a series of novels that together paint a complex picture of the future of the human species.
Military Sci-fi AI Jack, is controlling the Valor, one of five huge interstellar human starships🚀 with the last of the people fleeing from 🌍 Earth. The 🌞sun will explode soon and burn 🌎Earth to cinders. The Valor is the military ship🚀 of the fleet.
The five ships are Valor🚀, Honor🚀, Loyalty🚀, Restraint🚀, and Virtue🚀. Each ship is controlled by its own artificial intelligence, but they all work together, too.
Army Ranger Corporal Earl🐺🔫🔪 and his two troops board the Honor🚀 for the trip to the Eye of Horus, a dwarf red star system isolated from much of the universe.
The various human leaders on the ships🚀 can't seem to do anything but argue, when it is found out they were sent to the wrong planet🌍. Some want to keep looking, others want to settle on Horus🌍, because interstellar travel makes humans insane unless they are drugged and asleep.
Earl's🐺🔫🔪 job is to keep order, but Irene, the Honor AI, disarms their sidearms! It seems the AIs are going overboard to protect the humans from themselves.
Earl🐺🔫🔪 is promoted to Sergeant Major and he and his troops are moved to the Valor🚀, where they seem to continually have to put down riots among the civilians.
ARC Received from Hidden 💎Gems I also got This book with KU.
I did not read book one. The humans seem to be in unrest throughout this book, even though they are the last of humanity to survive. Most of the book involved fighting and rioting between the two factions of humans in a never ending power struggle. But who is the real power? Is it the humans or the AIs? I liked the book but the overall story is a real downer, so it's not my type of Sci-fi. If you like military sci-fi with the humans fighting each other, instead of aliens, you will enjoy this book. I would also classify the book as dystopian scifi.
