As soon as I saw the cover of this book, I was pretty excited to read it. It's a dystopian fantasy with a firecracker of a main character. I read this book pretty quickly and enjoyed all the little twists and turns. There was a lot of world building at the beginning and lots of description throughout. The love triangle was not my favorite, but I tend to dislike all love triangles so there's no surprise there. I enjoyed seeing how the story unfolded. It does end with a cliffhanger, but I didn't mind that. Overall, a fun read with lots of magic, fancy dresses, and muscle-y guards.

* I received this as an ARC*

I COULD NOT put this down. Hold on, I did put it down, but I was forced to (*looks at school, sleep, and eating*). This is a story of Arabella, a class peasant (lowest class), whose life is turned upside down one day. She lives a simple life - living with her mom and working at their shop and being madly in love with Asher. And then basically everything hits the fan, and Arabella has to figure out how to manage it all.

The beginning was a bit slow, hence the 4 stars. I got the feeling of "okay, uh huh. Mkay. Let's keep this moving," but after a few chapters it finally started to pick up and maintained that pace until the very end. We are introduced to our main characters pretty well, and you do feel for many of them, which I enjoyed. We do, however, deal with the typical young adult tropes. Just a few, but it wasn't as apparent as we usually see in other novels. I was afraid we were going to deal with it as a main plot line, but it was not. Both authors really focused on the "unexpected new calling" Arabella faces and how she deals with it.

Overall, it was such a ride with this book. I cannot wait for the next one because the authors decided to leave us on a cliffhanger, and I nearly wanted to scream when I read the last page. I'm rooting for Arabella and that she's given her happy ending. And I can only hope she has a moment to process it all because if I was in her shoes, I'd like a day to just cry and scream over it all. Kudos to her for dealing with it. Kudos to her.

*I received an arc from the author*

So, I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It was so good.
Great story, great characters and great development as a whole.
I would have liked a wee bit more background of the Queendom but I think that is a tiny little problem.

We lean an appropriate amount of the characters, and the lead character Bel, Arabella, is a great character. We watch we grow through the story. We also see her change but I don’t think that it is in a bad way. I think that it is good because she is coming into her own but she never backs down either.

The males were interesting too. We have two very different males in this book and I am probably rooting for the one everyone else isn't. As usual I guess.

This story moves along at a great pace too. There isn’t all the fluff I have been seeing now a days which is a nice change of pace. I feel like what I have been reading lately is authors taking up a lot of space just adding a bunch of nonsense and these authors do not do that and it is refreshing. There is just enough of everything.

I can’t wait to learn more about these stones because I want to see how much they change a person from who they are to who they are supposed to turn into so that is going to be fun to learn.

Also hello cliffhanger :) So I was extremely happy with this book and cannot wait until book 2.

Book Review: What would you do if the events of one day changed your life and everything you knew about your world forever?

Seventeen year old Arabella worries she will be chosen for The Transfer of Life ceremony, changing everything she’s known in one day. In this Young Adult Dystopian novel, Arabella finds herself in the last place she wanted to be and yet she finds the strength from within to put the people of the Queendom before her needs.

She has to convince the Council to not execute her and give her a chance to prove her innocence. Then she has to learn to wield the very magic she has despised her entire life. When she learns of the betrayal by someone close, all for the power of a throne, she stands up to fight not only for herself but for all of the classes in the Queendom.

This first novel in the royal fantasy series has excellent world building that pulls the reader directly into the setting. The reader will both empathize and cheer for the characters throughout their emotional turmoils. It is action packed and suspenseful especially when the reader finds out who really is behind the betrayal. Overall it is an engaging story with a cliff hanging ending leaving the reader wanting for more.

I'm not sure how to classify this book - part dystopian society, part fantasy, part romance. It's got a lot of great elements. Jenetta Penner has created a rich and exciting world, with a history and societal heirarchy that we understand from the very beginning. Our heroine, Arabella, begins her journey as a poor scavenger, one of many who must undergo a "coming of age" ceremony in which they may or may not be selected for an "honored" position that most don't want. When the queen is suddenly murdered during the ceremony and her memories and magic pass to Arabella, the upper class is in an uproar. How could this happen?

Arabella must prove that she is not a criminal or a theif, and that she was chosen because she has the ability to lead her queendom in the challenges it faces. Who should she trust? What will become of her? Will she learn to wield her power in time to protect herself and her loved ones?

I really enjoyed reading this story, which is told exclusively from Arabella's point of view. We discover some of the secrets and mysteries behind the magical society along with her, as we try to unravel the mystery of who killed the queen, and what they hoped to accomplish. Meanwhile, Arabella is conflicted between the boy she grew up with and thought was her destiny, and the boy who will do anything to protect her, who she feels an undeniable pull towards. I can't wait to see what happens in the rest of this series!

I volunteered to review an ARC of this novel.

For those that love magic, good against evil, fate/destiny and young adult books, I would give this book a read.

I reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

Although I have not technically read The Hunger Games or the Divergent series (they are on my list, but I get distracted by other books that I find), I feel that this book has slight similarities to those series as to the way this world is set up. You have the poor neighborhoods that surround the rich neighborhood, and the poor neighborhood is giving its last dime to support the rich. You have the required ceremony for those that come of age, although no one wants to be picked. If you are picked, get ready for someone else's memories and knowledge to flood in. You have the borderlands where no one ever goes because of possible death, but you suspect, as a reader, that there is something more to these lands (I'll have to read the next in the series once it comes out). You have the heroine who chooses to do the right thing, even when she wants to run away to the comfort of her home.

I have not read a book by this author before, but the way it is written helps bring the reader into the story and be a part of it. The ending will take you by surprise - I know I didn't see it coming. Oh, and did I mention the love triangle that is forming?

Life was little busy when I saw Jenetta's email with the synopsis and excerpt for this book but I'm glad that at last minute I added my name to receive an advanced reader's copy! It's a little different from both author's stories with more focus on royalty and magic but still very enjoyable!

We open up with Arabella working as citizen in the outskirts of the queendom, shortly before her transfer ceremony. Before her name is called an announcement is made that the current queen has been confirm dead, and at last minute the queen's essence is transferred to Arabella. This leads to poor Arabella's life being totally changed and she is forced to go to the palace to learn her fate.

There are a few twists that I did not see coming and I definitely cannot wait for the next installment in this series! That being said there were a few instances of using electronics such as cameras and listening devices that took me out of the story and made double take, since there was no mention of such devices before. Is this set in the future or in the past? I think it would be fine to have these devices but just clarify that.

I received this as a free copy from the author for my honest review.

* I received this as an ARC, but it does not impact my rating or review*

Though the first couple of chapters were a bit slow I was immediately hooked on this story.

This book tells the story of Arabella, a class peasant (lowest class), whose life gets turned upside down. She lives a simple life - living with her mom and working at their shop and being madly in love with Asher. Until one day she receives the mark of the Queen on her arm and things can never go back to how they were before. Now Arabella has to figure out how to manage her new life.

After the first few chapters the plot kept a pretty consistent pace and all of the characters were well fleshed out. There is some romance and like all YA Fiction there are some typical young adult tropes. However, the authors do a good job at keeping the plot's focus around Arabella and the "unexpected new calling" she faces and how she deals with it.
By the end of the novel we are left with a cliffhanger that has the reader excited and anxious for more.

Overall I really enjoyed this book. It was a solid read and I would highly recommend it for those looking for an intriguing new world full of strong characters, secrets, and magic.

Happy reading😉

This was a very strong introduction to a new series. Arabella faced tremendous difficulties, and I liked her enough that I was rooting for her from pretty early on. The push and pull between her former life and her new one kept my interest and it made me more understanding of a few things than I might otherwise have been. I also very much liked that several characters were not all bad or all good, which made them feel more real.

If there has to be a cliffhanger-type ending, this is the way to do it. It was impressive. Some important things were explained, but it's obvious there's still a lot of story to come. I'm curious to learn more about the power some people in the Queendom are able to access. I'm also looking forward to knowing more about the area beyond Lore. I definitely want to continue with the series.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

A story of love, magic but over all betrayal.

I decided to read this book because I've liked previous stories from David R Bernstein like Influencer and Avatar's Rising. So when I knew about this book, I didn't hesitate to give it a try even though the setting of the book is not what I'm used to reading.

I chose well, anyway. The story is about Arabella and how she suddenly becomes the Queen of Lore, changing her entire normal life. However, becoming the queen only causes her trouble because the Queendom's Council wants to get rid of her...so when she's alone at the Castle, facing a death threat, locked up in a cell, who will save her? And what is worse is that friends may not be so loyal after all.

This story, although fast-paced and short, is a good choice to entertain oneself because you won't be able to stop reading until the very end.

Another winner! In the Queendom of Lore, every seventeen year old has to participate in the Transfer ceremony – to see if they’re fit to become the Vessel of an Elder who has passed on in the preceding year. Arabella is terrified she’ll be chosen, and that her mind will no longer be her own. As she is participating in the ceremony, the unthinkable happens – the Queen dies, and she receives her Essence. The Council isn’t convinced that she didn’t murder the Queen and steal her essence. Did she? If not, why was she chosen? And who is the murderer? I received a free Advanced Reader copy of this book.

Readers beware you will pick this book up, magically nothing gets done, and before you know it your sadly at the end!
The Crown of Lore has officially got me hooked. Fast paced, twists that make you say whoa wait a min, resilience, resistance, and determination. Arabella has her life planned out, she isn’t going to get marked at the transfer ceremony. Until life changes in a second of panic, will anything she envisioned ever happen?
Penner & Bernstein weave an original YA story that leaves you wanting more in the end. I can not wait to get my hands on book two!

I reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

I couldn't stop reading this! The story was fast paced with interesting characters, and the premise was unique in a market which is becoming oversaturated with the same stories over and over.

Arrabella, a peasant from the relic class, gets a surprise after attending the Transfer of Life ceremony - a twist of fate has left her as Queen. But the trouble has just started, with her life hanging in the balance, as she is the main suspect for the Queen's murder. Throw in a country in turmoil, a couple of love interests and a smattering of magic, and we have a great start to a new series of dystopian fantasy YA novels.

Wow! This was not what I was expecting....and damn was it fantastic! I could not put this book down. Although, I found it a bit slow in the beginning, as soon as it picks up, WOW!
Intriguing, magical, mysterious and down right powerful! The characters are unique and well written, the world building is outstanding and balanced just like real life, just with more and the storyline is so much better than I thought and it's not just unique....it's a powerful first book with ending that leaves you speechless!

I reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. Bel and Asher face life full on. Though it is not easy. The transfer of life ceremony is a chance to be chosen for someone else’s memories. This ceremony is for seventeen year olds. Bel is chosen much to her dislike. Follow her journey as she fights with herself over this turn of events. The turns the story takes has dreading and urging her along the path she must take. This book does have a cliffhanger ending.

I enjoyed this book, the characters and the world they live in. I love the fact that it has a queendom in it! I was a but sad that the book was a bit short but the ending was a bang and darn you cliff hangers!

I love Bel, Asher, Tristan and Ferdan the best. Truly the best characters though Esme tanks up there too.

I do recommend this book and can hardly wait for book two!

This amazing tale truly brought these characters to life! I found the concept of the transfer of life essences quite intriguing and unique. Arabella bloomed into her unwanted role brilliantly and this tale has me very much wanting to know more. A beautiful cover with a perfect blurb, this tale is the perfect start of a series! There is a cliffhanger so be forewarned! All my reviews are always voluntarily written.

I really enjoyed this book. It manages to keep your attention and have you fully invested in the characters, as well as thew plot itself. Although not the most original story to be told, it is steadfast in its story telling and overall universe and enjoyable. The characters were believable and solid. A great start to a series.

It was alright

I liked it it was heading in a good place and then
Fell flat with the sudden interest in Tristan when the bond held so strong with bel and Asher. And I dont like how she went from a peasant to arrogant in a flash. It was good and has potential to be a great series.

I received an ARC from the author. This was an enjoyable read. It was interesting how the protagonist already had a love interest at the start of the story but still ended up having something like a love triangle. The way that magic was used in this book is different from what I have read previously but the difference was enjoyable. Overall a great book.

Good

Interesting start to a new series. Bel lives as a poor scavenger in the town of Arlos. She has her mother and devoted boyfriend, and is happy. Now she only needs to get through Choosing Day and she can be free to marry Asher and continue to live her poor but happy existence. Unfortunately things rarely go as planned.

Good book! Bel is an interesting character, in an intriguing world, who suddenly finds herself in an unimaginable position. The many twists and turns keep it quite entertaining. A touch more romance than I prefer, but not enough to keep me from wanting to find out more of the story.
