Detailed, whimsical illustrations in bold primary colors punctuating beautiful pastels are set on a stark white background offering opportunity to grasp every detail the artist has painstakingly included in the delightful story.

We are taken through an menagerie of critters (including a real human Daddy) tucking little ones into bed and reading the beloved bedtime story. And after you've read the short text on a couple of two-page spreads, it dawns upon you that there is a pattern being set forth. The tiny stuffed critter the child lovingly holds on one page becomes the "parent" on the next page.

And then you see that the author has taken you through a host of just what stories are meant to do..... grows, melts (we've all read something that just melted our hearts), turns topsy-turvy, lasts. Some books go on and on and last and last. Some just fly by. The same is true of bedtime stories.

I like the statement on the back cover...."No evening is complete without a bedtime story. And there are as many different stories as there are moms, and dads, and kids."

I recommend this book.

Note: 7/10

A story grows here as each page turns, each one predicting what comes next. This is a book to be shared before going to sleep. Each page features a parent reading to a child tucked up into his own bed. What surprises in this otherwise predictable book are the families portrayed: the pandas, the bats, the fish, the dragon and alien families, even the snail and mechanical backhoe families. The page that slyly hints at the European origins of the author/illustrator is the stork family nested in their chimney. This book is perfect for very young children. Simple illustrations on large white pages have sufficient detail to explore together. This book will satisfy both parent and child during the ready for bed story time.

This interesting picture books shows different animal parents reading bedtime stories to their children. But when you look closer, you can see that all of these loving parents sharing stories are connected to each other. And with each story that is shared, the story grows and soon we can see that we all share this wonderful connection with our families and with the rest of the world and beyond. It's a bit of an abstract book, but I think that it could generate some lovely discussions.

As bedtime stories are read in each animal family, the next animal species is foretold by the stuffed animal the animal child is holding. Nestle in close as you read this book so everyone can enjoy the fun details in the quirky bedtime reading scenes.

I really liked the connected structure of this book and how each "family" was connected to the next. The text was a little clunky though and I felt mixed on the illustrations - there are so many clever touches, like the type of crib each creature has, but the eyes are creepy for everyone.

The artwork in this book was pleasant to look at, but I was not very drawn on by the story. Every page was just a different animal reading a bedtime story to its child.

A STORY THAT GROWS
Gilles Bachelet
Eerdmans 2019

This is a bedtime book about finding the story that matches you: a fish finds a story that ripples, a dragon finds a story that sparkles, and a snail finds a story that takes its time. There’s a bit of play with the typography, which works nicely when it swirls down the page like a snail, but at other times, it’s a bit awkward, as when the text turns sideways to signify drips melting; the font never changes. The text merely informs the illustrations, rather than creating an interplay between text and illustrations, and though the animals vary, there’s a strange sameness about them, most evident in the perpetually surprised eyes. Other than the eyes, the illustrations are fun and interesting, though the starkness of the white background does tend to overwhelm the smaller illustrations. I find my reactions to this bedtime book mixed, and questioning the design and illustration choices. This story did not find a match with me, but it’s not hard to see some youngsters enjoying it.
