After losing the love of his life, Brenna, in a horrible accident, Valerian wonders aimlessly. He meets his former tutor who helps him recover from his grief, and eventually turns him into a vampire. Valerian enjoys his life as a vampire, but it doesn't make him miss Brenna any less. He finds that once every century, Brenna returns as a human and he falls in love with her again. But every time their union is cursed and Brenna dies. Now it is 1995 and Valerian is appearing as a magician at the Venetian Hotel on the Las Vegas strip. Brenna appears again, this time calling herself Daisy Chandler. Daisy is a Las Vegas Homicide Detective investigating a series of murders. Young women are found with two small holes in their necks. Their blood has been removed from their bodies. The police dub it the "vampire killings". All of the victims have ties to Valerian, and he is Daisy's chief suspect.
I read this book in the early 90's and loved it. This time I listened to the audiobook. I'm not sure if my tastes have changed drastically or if it was the narration. The story set in 1995 was interesting. Daisy has a smart mouth and I liked the dialogue between her and her partner. Valerian had a slow cadence to his voice which was a bit hypnotic, but sometimes it would almost put me to sleep. I guessed who was behind the murders right away and don't know why Valerian didn't figure it out sooner.
The story continues with many flashbacks to different reincarnations of Brenna. Each were told with painstaking slowness. My eyes kept rolling back in my head and I kept waiting for the present day story to proceed. Finally, the villain was caught and we can all live happily ever after. My rating: 2 Stars.

I always knew Linda Lael Miller as a cowboy romance writer. Well, prior to that, surprise, vampires! After owning this book for years via library resale, I finally got around to taking this stroll-down-90s-vampire-romance-lane.
Valerian and Brenna are 14th century star-crossed lovers. Brenna suffers a tragic fate, while Valerian becomes a vampire. Fortunately, Brenna is reincarnated, but Valerian just can't keep her safe, and they meet across her many lifetimes.
Romance has changed a lot in twenty-five years. For me, the story was heavily carried by Valerian's dark, tragic, I'm-a-sexy-magician character. While Brenna, even though she was cop, was boring. Sometimes I wished the story was all Valerian's POV.

Book 3 in her 4 part Vampire Series. I read a long time ago- so I don't remember many specifics, but it was good and all 4 are still on my keeper shelf!

Valerian’s story, many years after the previous book.
Daisy Chandler is a Las Vegas policeman and the most recent reincarnated version of Valerian’s childhood love: Breanna of Cornwall. But their love is cursed. Every time she is reincarnated, he receives a mysterious silver ring. Any every time, shortly after he finds her, she dies and the ring disappears again.
The modern time murder mystery is interspersed with earlier recognitions from Valerian of when he first met Brenna and her reincarnations which eventually gets very confusing. I stopped trying to figure it out and just enjoyed the story. While Valerian and Brenna’s early story was interesting, at times this account of it was too drawn-out and morbid. And it gets a little complicated and confusing. I love the new, but expected character introduced in the middle of the story.
Footnote: 1) It’s Baa-ra-bus, not Bare-a-bus. Just 1 of many mispronounced words.
Fave scenes: Valerian searching the village, Daisy wanting to pay her groceries, Daisy meeting Christina and Valerian at the burial mound.

Valerian's story at last & it was amazing! I loved the back and forth between centuries as his tale unfolded...felt I was finally getting to know him better. This book was every bit as good as the first two, and once again, would recommend to anyone who enjoys paranormal romance & vampire stories. This one will not disappoint...for me it's a definite keeper, and although this was my second reading, I would definitely read again!

I generally enjoy books revolving around vampires, but found this one to be lacking. Valerian is a centuries old vampire and once every 100 years his human soulmate enters his life in different incarnations. The basic time line is 1995 but there are excerpts from the 1400's on. Naturally there is evil as well as romance. I believe this made the story development seem flawed because of all the jumping around between centuries and characters.

The characters were not all that great. Especially since they professed undying love for each other but neither wanted to change their life for the other either. Valerian was too into himself all through the story and couldn't even do what he had to, to save Daisy.

What a great read
I really love this series, but this book is my favorite book of the series. I was hoping that the writer was going to write more books to this series, but I guess she is not going to do that. But if you haven't read this series it is a good series to read.

This centers around the ancient vampire, Valerian, who was introduced and played an important role in the first two novels (Forever and the Night and For All Eternity).
Valerian was a 17-year-old mortal living in a simple village as a bootmaker's son in Cornwall in 1348. He seemed to be cursed from birth as he was admired and emulated by his younger brother, Krispin, obsessively cherished by his mother and, as a result, disliked and unloved by his father. He loved the Lady Brenna although she was of a higher station and was promised to another. Brenna returned his love, and in a brief and innocent moment of comforting her, they were spotted which sent her father into a rage, starting one horrible circumstance after another, resulting in Brenna's demise.
Years later, at 35, he is found by his former tutor and is turned into a vampire. For some mysterious and heartbreaking reason, once a century he comes across his beloved Brenna, although in a new and different incarnation each time, they fall in love and shortly thereafter, she is killed or dies of illness.
It is now the year 1995 and the newest incarnation is Daisy Chandler, a homicide detective in Las Vegas, where Valerian is a headliner (magician and illusionist) at the newly built Venetian Hotel. The cycle begins again, although this time, both Valerian and Daisy are determined to solve the puzzle as to who is murdering innocent women in strange "vampire-like" murders, who is threatening Daisy in connection with these murders, and who has been so determined to repeatedly break Valerian's heart by bringing him face-to-face with his beloved Brenna only to take her away.

Quick Thoughts: This series is an old favorite of mine (I have the original paperbacks) so I jumped at the chance to listen on audio when they finally came out. Valerian! What can I say about him? He is annoying, pompous, arrogant, and sometimes very hard to like. His love story is a hard one to read because you spend part of the story absolutely "grrrrrring" at him. However, LLM makes it work. You end up rooting for the bast*rd! While this is not my favorite in the series, it is still really worth reading.
Audio Thoughts:
Cris does a great job with the characters in this series. She is quickly becoming one of my favorite PNR narrators. She know how to growl and how to be sweet (and pretty much everything in-between).

I am really enjoying these books.
They are written so much different and unique then many others.

Valerian himself is what this book is about. It tells his whole story. How he fell in love with Lady Benna but she died. He became a vampire at 35 and lived it up to its fullest. Some time later he met Elizabeth and she was his Benna even though she did not recognize him. It keeps going that he meets his true love but then she is taken away again.
The story begins in 1995 in Las Vegas where Valerian has a Vegas act and Daisy comes to see it. He immediately recognizes her as his true love once again but soon there are murders around them and he must do what he can to save her, even if he must die.

The only reason I gave this book just an o.k. rating was it was just a little too creepy for my taste. Linda Lael Miller writes great, suspenseful mysteries unlike anything that is out there. This book was no exception. Valerian and Brenna were doomed as soul mates in the fourteenth century. This story works its way through 1995 as Miller tells about how they find each other over and over. And how they try to break the curse that continued to keep them apart.
It was a great mystery. Very edgy. Had it been a western, it would have gotten five stars from me.

How much did I love this book? I can't count the ways. I finished reading it yesterday and I've got one heck of a book hangover. Valerian. Oh my goodness! He is, by far, THE sexiest vampire I've ever read. He surpasses them all. He's conflicted, gorgeous, arrogant, classy, deadly, devious, passionate....Be still my heart.

September 26, 2010Ah, the Valerian book we all wanted (I also wanted a book on Tobias but I guess we can't get everything.) This was good although it never staid with me the way that Maeve's story did. I liked the female lead a lot, though.

This was a sale ebook from B&N. I buy almost any book that might appeal if it is on sale.

Not bad
The story was pretty good although predictable at times. I would have enjoyed it more if it had been proofread to catch all the typos that autocorrect missed because the words are out of context when the author meant a similarly spelled word.

Valerian rules!
Number 3 book out of 4 book series. This one covers Valerian who I always thought of as a distinguished proper Victorian gentlemen. His story covers the past life and his love for one girl who stole his heart.

I loved this and I loved Valerian from Mauve's book. This one made me a crier too. I have all these paper back original copies in a shelf. Man the memories I had with this series. Aiden and Valerian became favourite names and vampires for me.

Regretfully, not much better than the two previous volumes.
This book like those before it or repetitive in content. The characters are constantly angry about one thing or another. Unfortunately, I bought all 4 books at the same time, won't make that mistake again!

I absolutely LOVE Linda Lael Miller's Vampire Series and I'm the proud owner of all 4 of them. This series is fabulous and definitely worth the read. :)
