著者の渡辺さんはボストンに長く暮らし、民主党、共和党の両陣営のイベントに参加し、さまざまな人にインタビューを試みた。SNSの動向などにも目を配りながら、ナマの声をひろっていく。また大統領選の仕組み、南北戦争時からオバマまでのアメリカの大統領選の歴史、人々の投票行動、どんな利害関係や、思想的心情などがあるのを分析。専門的には見えない、極めてリアルはアメリカの一側面がわかる。
トランプの支持者は、プアホワイトのほか、高額所得者の白人も多いという。1950年までのアメリカの栄光を忘れられない人々がトランプを支持している。反トランプ派にしてみれば、暗黒の時代が始まろうとしている。そのような状況下、リベラル派はどのように希望を抱いたらいいのか、対話の可能性はどこにあるのか。一市民であり、移民である著者は全編にわたって問いかけている。
