When Canadian musician Steve Kielty goes missing in the Scottish Highlands during his band’s tour, freelance journalist Ayn Leland and her partner Ben set out to find him. Their investigation leads them to the enigmatic and wealthy Joan Shaw, living in a remote manor house. There they find the beautiful but mysterious Marianne McLintlock, a former rock star with delusions of a career comeback. As the two women plot to revive Marianne’s career, they do not take kindly to Ayn and Ben’s investigations when they begin to thwart their plans. In a reversal of roles, Ayn and Ben soon find that the hunters could get captured by the game! In a story spanning several decades, Ayn uncovers a ten-year old crime and a grave injustice she feels compelled to right. As she discovers the complex web of tales connecting the people involved, she travels to the stunning mountains of western Mallorca where her search, now personal as well as professional, reaches its climax. R L Middleton worked in English and Film education for many years. “Off The Map” is his second novel featuring music journalist Ayn Leland.
I thoroughly enjoyed "Off the Map". It was interesting to find more about Ayn Leland`s background, the main character in both this book and in " Fading Sounds ". It was lovely to have the mystery set in Scotland and Mallorca. Off the Map is a proper `page turner` which keeps you reading until the whole mystery is solved. I loved the way the author made you empathise with the character of Marianne McLintock, even though she did some horrible things such as cutting off Steve Kielty`s pinkie. I am looking forward to another mystery involving Ayn.
