I hate biographies and this book was an autobiography itself so I wasn't so into reading it, but I did finish it. It depicts a lot of emotions of the writer so I guess it was somewhat good, not to mention, funny. Anyways, I'd definitely recommend this book to people who love to read biographies and all that boring stuff:) It did get monotonous quite a lot of times but I guess the writer's humor and sense of understanding balances it out.
ps. i wanted to write a review on a book so i randomly found this, bare with me :P
If I were to rate this book, I would give it a 4 out of 5.
Along with "Fantastic Mr. Fox," this book is one of the most outstanding books Roald Dahl has ever written!
I loved hearing about his school life! I especially liked hearing about his activities, the teachers, and the older kids who were allowed to pummel the younger students. This was fascinating! I love this book so much!
I also enjoyed hearing about the sweet shop. I think I would enjoy pear drops and sherbet straws, or whatever they're called. The idea was brilliant! However, I was disappointed he and his friends had been caught.
In general, I don't really like non-fiction so I found some parts quite boring. However, Roald Dahl's books are all somewhat funny and, at some parts, this one was too. The book talks about what the writer experienced in the 20th Century and the experience of being a child at an English boarding school. The rules were harsh and it was normal for a child to be beaten as punishment. It was funny when the writer got up to mischief with his friends and it was well written. This book was good but I wasn't really into it.
Roald is undoubtedly an extraordinary storyteller. This was at times a curse as I would physically cringe and writh in pain when he so vividly recalls certain painful medical procedures, but mostly I laughed at his boyish mischief and his time at English boarding schools. I also rather enjoyed following him on his family adventures and could relate to so many of his anecdotes. Beautiful, easy reading - stolen from my children's library.
I absolutely loved reading about Roald Dahl’s early life & it’s so beautifully described. The only reason I marked it down is because there are some extracts from his letters home & they are extremely difficult to read.
One Of the best Roald Dahl books, makes you feel like you're experiencing his childhood with him and gives you great insight into what it would have been like to grow up in the very early 20th century.
Bestesttttt!!!! 1st ever read Book of Roald dahl!! Totally loved the childhood and teen journey of the author!! Loved the 1st and 2nd part of his Life the most!! Looking forward to read the next part of the book that's Going solo
Great for reading to your child, if you don't mind graphic descriptions of corporal punishment perpetrated by sadistic fucking men in English boarding schools.
Me encanta leer biografías interesantes y esta es una biografía interesante. Me entretuvo bastante, el lenguaje es simple (lo leí en inglés) y la verdad que lo recomendaría para leer.
Book 1 of Roald Dahl's autobiography. His childhood retold in great many detail -- growing up in an erstwhile rich family, and then in his boarding school. Littered with pictures, notes and hilarious anecdotes of his charming boyhood, this book is a much beloved gem for his massive, global fanbase. I received this as a gift, and have since gifted a number of copied to close friends.
I had to read it for school. Actually, at the begging, I thought it wasn’t an amazing book because it is about the author’s life but I finished it in two school days. Is also very interesting the pictures and the story because we can read about an old school which is very different from now. Good book for students in the middle school especially if you are studying this kind of books.
