Nash is contracted to verify, and assist if needed, the capture of supernatural predator who's been killing innocent people once a month during the full moon. Nash sets out to investigate the many unanswered questions about the capture of the creature and the murders attributed to it, but what the "Corsair", and his dwindling supply of silver bullets, didn't count on was the hunter becoming the hunted!
The novelette, CURSED, is part modern day werewolf action adventure and part supernatural mystery which "...kept me guessing until the very last page!"
James Donaldson, independent author and disabled veteran, is realizing his lifelong dream of writing speculative fiction. James’ writing philosophy revolves around “...eldritch styled escapism stories I’d enjoy reading.”
James crafts his books (novels, novellas and novelettes) in a continuing series referred to as "The Corsair Adventures". The series follows a single protagonist, Nash (Code Name: The Corsair), through his different mysterious, exciting and sometimes supernatural adventures.
James Donaldson is a former police officer and a decorated combat veteran. He currently lives in Utah with his family and works in the national security field.
I'm not this book's targeted audience. As a rule I don't read werewolf/paranormal/supernatural stories but it was free so I decided to take a chance.
It started out interesting enough with a double murder. A little creepy and some mild gore as expected but nothing super disgusting. The plot moved extremely quick and before long we're introduced to our main character- Nash. I'm not entirely sure if Cursed is the first book in this series or not but Nash seems to already have a history of dealing with this sort of thing. Nash is sent to the small town to confirm that the captured murderer is indeed a werewolf. Since this review is spoiler free I'll stop there.
Like I mentioned earlier, this is very fast paced which makes it hard to really know the characters. It also made the believability of the plot hard to swallow. The twist at the end was a very cool idea but in the same breath it was frustrating because...*fights the urge to include spoiler* because there were many ways the twist idea could have happened. The ending was pretty abrupt.
Overall: I'm giving this a 2.5 rating. I strongly believe that this story has great potential. I think it would be even better if it were longer with a slower pace. There was a bit of mild language too. Again, I'm not the intended audience but if you enjoy stories about a werewolf terrorizing a small town, then this might be a good option for you.
