GrimFaerie Chronicles #1

Grim Undertakings: Book 1 of the GrimFaerie Chronicles

Rate this book
Not all of the Faerie are sweet little Pixies. There are a few who do the dirty work on the side of the Light. Unknown protectors walk among us, gleefully using fang and claw and magick, leaving a bloody trail of vanquished evildoers in their wake. They are the GrimFaeries. If you are evil enough to try to tip the balance towards the Dark side, you might just get a visit from one. And they won't be leaving a coin under your pillow.

When Kane the Grim is tasked with finding a serial murderer in Houston, he discovers that there is much more at stake. Magick is afoot, and an evil sorcerer is behind the killings. When he rescues a witch from certain death, his new mission becomes stop the bad guy before it’s too late. Teaming up with a witch who's as good with a gun as with her spells, they'll face monsters, magick, and M-16's, as they risk everything to stop the evil in its tracks before all is lost.

If you're a fan of Jim Butcher's Dresden Files, you'll love the first tale of the GrimFaerie Chronicles, an exciting new urban fantasy from Whit McClendon, the author of the Fire of the Jidaan Trilogy!

Great read!

This is a fun story, yes I said fun. A grim (a new type of pnr being for me) and a witch going after a bad guy. Add goblins and other magical things and there's so much going on that you're definitely not bored! A must read!

Action Action Action

There’s probably 20 pages in the entire novel that aren’t action filled. There isn’t a single wasted word. Every movement builds into the next then BOOM, heart racing action. The tension is high and the pace Swift. The characters are well thought out and easily became friends in my head.
Grimm is definitely Fae and follows the mythology up until he starts feeling things. He questions the change but doesn’t dwell or respond to it. I’m guessing that’s in the future.
Ariana is human with that wicked wyrd Wiccan sister thing. She’s militia with magic.
I think this duo is going to keep me coming back.

Great Action & Great Characters

I enjoyed the storyline a lot and getting to know the characters. As others have mentioned, there's definitely a lot of action. I loved that! McClendon was great at sharing details of what was happening, and I could picture things happening as if I were right there with the characters. There was also a good variety of types of characters, which added more interest. I also REALLY appreciate not spotting a bunch of typos and editing errors, which can be distracting.

I'm anxiously awaiting the next book in the series (and wish it was already out)!

Awesome start to the series! I love contemporary fantasy and urban fantasy and this is perfect. Plus being set in my own city of Houston, this novel ticked all the boxes for me!

I truly loved this book. It’s kind of a cross between Batman, Angel and Jim Butcher’s Dresden files –but also so much more. It’s well written, with great characters and is just a fantastic read, full of action, twists and surprises. It’s chock-full of surprises, faerie creatures, magick, witches (who aren’t also afraid to be very unconventional), sorcerers and some great action sequences. It packs a punch and kept me turning the pages to find out what happened next. It’s just great, well-written fun. Can’t wait for more. This would make a fantastic movie. Hollywood, take note.

I actually liked the book. I've not read the author before and this is UF which I love. We have a Ariana a female character who can take care of herself which isnt unheard of in this genre but she was kinda funny as well. She's a witch and a pretty good one at that. We have Kane who is a faerie but not the type from stories. He's an assassin of sorts to keep the truly bad guys from doing horrible things. He's not really a warm fuzzy guy but I liked him. They have to work together to stop someone from completing a ritual which will change the world forever.

Although I liked the story I did have some trouble with some things. We were mostly in Kane's POV but then there were chapters where I wasnt sure who was talking. It took me awhile to figure it out and even then I wasnt sure exactly who was speaking but I knew it was the bad guy. I also had trouble with how long this mission took. What I mean is from chapter 12 to about chapter 34 they are trying to get into the building to get the bad guy. Thats a lot of chapters spent on that specifically. We dont need the step by step at least I didnt. I just wanted to skip over that part but I didnt to be true to my review. I got really bored though and just wanted it to be over. It was too much time spent on that I think. I think other areas of the book could have benefited more time like the characters Kane and Ariana we know very little about them just a little. Even more about Elias could have been added. Of course I'm intrigued with Max so I hope we havent seen the last of him. All that said I still liked it and I would like to read more of this series.

Criminal Minds meets Buffy in a Hotel Artemis setting. Captivating wit from the get-go, unputdownable!

Kane is a GrimFaerie - the one you call on (or he assumes the job himself) when someone has been very very naughty, which is to say grim dark and murderous. And no, he’s nothing like Tinkerbell (tho she isn’t harmless either). When 12 women are murdered and he’s shown the 13th in a vision, Kane is on the case.

I pictured Kane as someone from the Criminal Minds team - if they were a supernatural vigilante, out to prevent crimes. As for Ariana - kickass character - think Charlize Theron in Atomic Blonde but a pacifist superwitch who’s got all the skills and PG swears (involving Batman). Hope to see their sparks developing in the next book.

My kinda writing, my kinda dark humour (loved the James Bond and Star Wars references), fast pace, great plot, captivating characters - methinks I’ve found myself a new fave indie author. Will definitely read stuff by him again.

Quote: “No, I’m the kind that had your ancestors bolting their doors and cowering in their homes at night. /…/ Seeing me at work is usually enough to send people to years of therapy, and I’ve heard that their nightmares never go away.”

Recommended for lovers of dark urban fantasy, fae myths & legends, Grimm fairytales, and for those who think faeries are more like the mermaids in Pirates than those in Sleeping Beauty.

I enjoyed this book. It kept me turning the pages in suspense. There were times when it felt a little slow due to lots of description, but that's probably more a personal preference on my part than it is a fault in the storytelling. I've always struggled to keep my attention on lengthy descriptions. There are times when the narration jumps from first person to third person and it pulled me out of the story momentarily until I got my bearings. But other than those two things, I think the story was a fun read with lots of great characters. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next!

DNF @ 30%

I tried. I really did. But the writing is redundant and stilted and I was mistakenly under the impression that this would be more of an equal partnership team up and it’s definitely not. An incredibly OP Fairy guy rescues his damsel manic pixie dream girl side kick witch (who has brains the size of a pea) and a bunch of boring action scenes ensue with man info dumps along the way and some fourth wall breaking for funsies.

Oy.

It got worse from there. The villain is cartoony and unbelievable.

I just can’t anymore.

A fairy grim is sent to save a human woman, there have been a number of women killed and the fairy is to ensure that this woman is not one of them. The woman turns out to be a witch and she joins the fairy to find the being that is using women as sacrifices. Lots of action. I would have liked more character development but this may come in the next in series

Really great read!

This is one of the best books i have read in awhile. I couldn't put it down. The story line keeps you drawn in with lots of action and the characters make the story come to life. It's my first book by this author but won't be my last.

What do you get when you put a king, a witch, a grim, a demon, a troll, a gargoyle and a handful of smelly goblins in a book?

A great read!

This is currently my favourite read of 2019! I couldn't put it down - well I could have, but I didn't want to. Bring on the series!
