James Gagnon’s debut collection of short stories explores the miraculous, magical, and morbid. In the darkness, Time falls in love with Life, breaking his pact with Death—thus the world is born. A young scientist sets out to prove that magic can’t exist and, in doing so, falls in love. A soldier travels to the darkest of nightmares to find her sister and escape the demons responsible. In a battle of literary quotes, a boy proves himself to be an equal to the most learned man in the world—but at great cost. A small band of holy warriors undertake a mission to burn out the very heart of evil, and must face an unseen enemy. These stories question the truth of reality, the balance of light and dark, and the nature of good and evil while entertaining with humor, character, and wit.
This is an absolutely fantastic collection of short stories, each one unique and riveting; I had a hard time putting the book down I was so eager to see how each would end.
The first story is just like the title says: short... but beautifully written. It pulled me into the book and everything just took off from there. I could not be more please with this book and eager to see what other brilliance the author delivers in the future.
