For as long as she can remember, Katie MacAlister has loved reading. Growing up in a family where a weekly visit to the library was a given, Katie spent much of her time with her nose buried in a book. Despite her love for novels, she didn't think of writing them until she was contracted to write a non-fiction book about software. Memoirs of a Dragon Hunter by Katie MacAlister is the first book of the paranormal romance Dragon Hunter series. I picked this one up thinking it had been a while since I’d read a good paranormal romance and unfortunately I’ll have to keep looking to check off that box.

The main character in this book is Veronica who hadn’t heard from her sister in quite a while so imagine her shock when she makes contact. The reason however is even more shocking, Helen had come to pass on her dragon hunting ability and Veronica watches as she turns into a pile of ash.

Now, for anyone this whole dragon hunting/demon infested world would be a lot to take in as it is but even more so for OCD suffering Veronica. But if anything could get Veronica’s mind off of the germs surrounding her it would be Ian Iskander.

Now I’m one that absolutely loves a good eccentric or quirky character in a book so at quick glance the blurb for this one sounded like it could be right up my alley. However, instead of a quirky and funny Veronica came across to me as cheesy and childish. I know her actions are meant to convey her OCD nature but just in my mind it went a bit too far to make her into a believable adult character and felt as if I’m reading the view of a tween at times. Of course others are enjoying this opener for the series so while it wasn’t my cup of tea feel free to check it out if it sounds like a good one for you.

This sounded so good when I read the blurb. Then I started reading it and while it was fun in the beginning, the heroine's immature personality got old fast. Look, I love my quirky heroines but there is quirky and then there is silly and childish.She could hold one position in a discussion one minute and in the next she was on the other side saying the exact opposite. Conversations really went in circles with her.

I could never really get a read on Ian, even though I got to 50% I didn't have much to go on what kind of person he was.

The story feels like too much slapstick has been poured into it. The attempts at humor totally distract from the plot. I wanted to love it, unfortunately I got frustrated midway and just couldn't do it any longer.

For the life of me I just could not get into this book. I kept waiting and waiting to like it and I just couldn’t do it. I don’t mind main characters with quirks or issues, but Veronica drove me up the wall. If I heard how good looking Ian was and how she can’t stop touching him one more time.... they had no chemistry and I couldn’t get on board with them.

This book was my favourite type of porn: Torture.
It was awful. Terrible. One of the worst things I’ve read. But it also had the most romantic conversation I’ve ever read:
“Can’t… breathe…”
“Ha Ha, you take my breath away, too”

If my future partner won’t accidentally choke me and then make a shitty joke about it, I don’t want it.

Let me start out by saying that I am a big fan of Katie MacAlister - I absolutely loved her Dragon Septs series/world. So this book is a bit of an anomaly for me in that I could not bring myself to like it, no matter how hard I tried. And try I did, I would not let myself DNF this one. But not every book works for me, and this one was a miss in several areas.

Our hero is Ian Iskander, a half-demon, half-dragon, hot hunk of man meat, who also happens to be a dragon hunter. Don't let the name fool you... the dragon hunters don't actually hunt dragons. They hunt demons. (Confusing, I know.) So Ian is a tortured soul forced into demon servitude, but still grasping his goodness by the tips of his fingers. For the most part, I liked Ian's character. I got his broody conflict and admired his compassion for animals, espirit, and lost souls like Sasha. I thought Ian would be similar to MacAlister's dragony goodness in her earlier books... alpha male with a touch of humor. But Ian needed more spine, more maturity, and didn't have enough flavor for my taste.

Our heroine, Veronica (a/k/a Ronnie) is a strange bird. From the outset, we are confronted with Ronnie's OCD and neuroses. But while this could have been a cute and unique heroine, she came off as over-the-top and downright ridiculous (and not in a good way). Her behavior was so beyond extreme and silly that it threw me out of the story and nearly caused me to abandon the book on several occasions. Ronnie is a total spaz, hot and cold with her afflictions and her emotions, and a drama queen to no end. She just really worked on my last nerve.

Now, I'm not expecting a story about dragon hunters to be plausible. That being said... sometimes the implausibility of the story went so far out there to have me shaking my head in bewilderment. The plot lacked a cohesive quality and seemed to jump around at times, leaving plot holes or unanswered questions. I wasn't able to connect to any one character, nor do I feel like the world building was sufficiently developed. It was a bit shocking given what I know of MacAlister's fun and fiery dragons in the Dragon Septs world. I almost feel like I need to go back and read those books quickly to cleanse my palette.

Despite not caring for this initial installment, I am not giving up on the Dragon Hunter series quite yet. I want to see if we get back to classic MacAlister in the next book, Day of the Dragon. Hopefully I see that old dragony spark with our next dragon hunting pair, as I have been excited for a new series by this author.

Ich bedanke mich bei Netgalley und dem LYX Verlag für das kostenlose Rezensionsexemplar des Buches. Ich gebe hier meine unabhängige und unbezahlte Meinung zu dem Buch ab.
Durch das schön gestaltete Cover und den Klappentext wurde ich auf dieses Buch aufmerksam und die Lust geweckt es zu lesen. Ich habe schon ein paar Bücher der Autorin gelesen und war bisher immer positiv überrascht mit welcher Hingabe und Humor sie ihre Bücher verfasst hat. Daher waren meine Erwartungen an diesen Roman dementsprechend geartet. Da es es sich um den Auftaktband einer neuen Serie handelte, kribbelte es förmlich in meinen Fingern bis ich das Buch endlich auf dem Reader hatte und loslegen konnte. Doch dann, nun was soll ich sagen, ich war enttäuscht und quälte mich regelrecht durch die Seiten. Der Start in Buch war eigentlich noch recht gut gelungen, aber dann baute das Buch extrem ab in meinen Augen. Die Dialoge wirkten aufgesetzt und regelrecht gequält witzig geschrieben, so dass man als Leser nur noch mit den Augen rollen konnte und immer wieder erwischte ich mich dabei, dass ich einfach Textpassagen übersprang, weil sie entweder zu langatmig, langweilig oder zu gestelzt waren. Das ist eigentlich absolut nicht meine Art ein Buch zu lesen. Die Geschichte an sich hatte Potenzial nur mangelte es irgendwie an der Umsetzung und die Charaktere hatten in meinen Augen sehr wenig, mit dem man sich als Leser identifizieren konnte. Man wurde nicht wirklich war mit der Geschichte und den Personen. Man blieb außen vor wie ein stiller Beobachter, der irgendwann nur noch genervt umblätterte. Es tut mir sehr leid, dass mich dieses Buch nicht begeistern konnte, aber da ich andere Bücher der Autorin kenne, war dies hoffentlich nur ein Ausrutscher und nicht kennzeichnend für die gesamte Serie.
Daher kann ich dieses Mal wirklich nur 2 Sterne vergeben, so leid es mir auch tut.

This book has left me with conflicted emotions.
It had some adorable moments but it was also confusing and weird.

Let's start with the good. Ian was a good main male character. He was understanding and caring of Veronica's quirks and never judged her or them. He was often confused by her actions, and yet amused by it. Her actions did not amuse me but his reactions certainly did, for lack of a better word, they were cute. He was what I can only describe as Mr Nice Guy.

The plot was neither here or there. It had good moments and not so good moments. It was hard to get into but it ended on a sweet note.

I love a quirky and eccentric character but the main character here, Veronica, was eccentric on overdose. To the point of ridiculousness sometimes.
Yah, she had cute moments, hence the 2.5 stars. But often it was just too much and consequently obnoxious. She ended up coming across rather childish, her voice in my head was that of a 13 year old which made the sex scenes very very weird and uncomfortable to read.
Don't get me wrong, it was nice of the author to have a character with OCD, but she didn't have to sound like a child because of it! That was just so off putting.

Last but not least, there was no chemistry between the main characters. Even when they 'did it' it was strange. Her quirky habits interfered with a scene that should be sizzling hot.

All in all, not a bad pnr, but not a series I will continue reading either. One book was enough.

She must pass on her ability and birth right to one who will continue to rally for GOOD. Of course the one fit for this undertaking is her OCD half-sister Veronica. This is a fun story of heroes, spunky characters, and love that will champion over evil. Humor abounded with quirky phrases and friends that excel as brave sidekicks. MacAlister heats up the pages with a HEA romance. Look forward to more of this series. No Cliff hangers. Ausgerechnet die pingelige und an einer Angststörung leidende Veronica "Ronnie" wird von ihrer Halbschwester Helen auserwählt, deren Erbe als Drachenjägerin weiter zu führen und die Unschuldigen zu beschützen. Ronnie ist mehr als überfordert in dieser neuen Rolle und vor allem in dieser ihr neuen Welt voller Drachen, Dämonen und magischen Schwertern. Zum Glück ist da dieser verführerische neue Nachbar Ian, seines Zeichens Halbdämon, der sie unterstützt im Kampf gegen das Böse...

Meine Meinung
Katie MacAlister und ich ... ihre Bücher reizen mich immer sehr, sie klingen witzig und unterhaltsam und beinhalten oft Drachen, meine geheime Schwäche. Aber ich habe schonmal ein Buch von ihr abgebrochen und entsprechend skeptisch bin ich an Drachen bevorzugt rangegangen. Der Schreibstil lässt sich locker und flüssig lesen, die Kapitel sind aus er Ich-Perspektive von Ronnie oder aber aus der Sicht von Ian, dann aber in der 3. Person geschrieben.

Ronnie wird von ihrer Halbschwester in eine dunkle Gasse gerufen, wo diese schwer verwundet liegt und ihr eröffnet, dass die Welt voller magischer Wesen und Gegebenheiten ist. Mit einem Biss überträgt die Sterbende ihr Erbe auf Ronnie und verpufft dann in schwarzen Staub. Ausgerechnet Ronnie - die einen ausgeprägten Putzfimmel, eine Angststörung und noch so viele andere Ticks hat, wird in diese ihr völlig fremde Welt geworfen. Zum Glück ist ihr neuer Nachbar Ian selber ein Halbdämon und bietet ihr einen Deal an: Sie spielt seine Freundin, er hilft ihr und zeigt ihr diese neue Welt. Dumm nur, dass Ian besonders attraktiv ist und auf Ronnie eine unglaubliche Anziehungskraft hat.

Die Idee der Geschichte finde ich wirklich toll, besonders auch, dass eine absolut unperfekte Protagonistin in eine ihr so fremde und gefährliche Welt geworfen wird. Ronnie hat mit vielem zu kämpfen: Perfektionismus, Zwangsstörungen und ihrem ganz persönlichen Angsttierchen, dass sie bisher immer wieder plötzlich übermannt hat. Dass diese verwundbare Frau dann auf einen düsteren und sehr verzweifelten Halbdämonen trifft, der wortwörtlich mit seinen eigenen Dämonen zu kämpfen hat, hat eigentlich wirklich Potenzial... eigentlich. Wenn denn auch die Umsetzung stimmt.

Leider aber ist das Buch als "leichte Lektüre" zu betiteln. Es fehlt ihm an einem roten Faden, sinnvollen Szenen und Charakteren, Inhalt und Tiefe, während es von erzwungen komischen Sätzen, einer furchtbaren Lovestory und unglaublich anödenden Dialogen lebt.

1. Der rote Faden
Ja, er ist durchaus zwischendurch zu fassen. Das Buch folgt auch einem gewissen Ziel. ABER (dickes grosses fettes Aber) mehrheitlich besteht die Geschichte aus sinnlos aneinander gereihten Ereignissen, die eigentlich gar nichts mit der Geschichte an sich zu tun haben oder nichts dazu beitragen.

2. Szenen und Charaktere sinnvoll einsetzen
Das ist der Autorin hier definitiv nicht gelungen. Zu Beginn begleitet z.B. Teresita, Nachbarin und beste Freundin, die Protagonistin fast durchgehend. Aber plötzlich ist sie vom Erdboden verschluckt und niemand denkt auch nur ansatzweise mehr an sie. Welchen Zweck hatte sie also? Anderes Beispiel: Jemand (ein geheimnisvoller Unbekannter) verwüstet die Wohnung der Protagonistin und stiehlt ihr etwas Wertvolles. Es wird geheult und gerätselt, aber schliesslich wird auch dies einfach vergessen und findet keinerlei Erwähnung mehr. Auch hier stellt sich die Frage nach dem Zweck, zumal die Geschichte in sich abgeschlossen ist und Band 2 sich mit einem anderen Paar beschäftigt. Ich könnte noch unzählige Beispiele nennen...

3. Inhalt und Tiefe
Inhalt. Das A und O einer Geschichte. Hier aber irgendwie Nebensache. Unzählige Dinge werden aufgegriffen und wieder verworfen, es werden Dämonen und Nichtdämonen, Kuriere, Höfe und so viel mehr erwähnt - aber nie vertieft und nie erklärt. Selbst jetzt ist mir nicht zu 100% klar, was denn die Kirche des Gedemütigten Fleisches des Gequälten Zeugen letztendlich ist - und warum man hier gedemütigt und gequält konsequent gross geschrieben hat.
Tiefe bringt die Geschichte auch nicht auf, alles wird nur oberflächlich angekratzt und auch die Charaktere sind flach und farblos - einzigartig zwar, aber eben doch nur grob skizziert.

4. Erzwungene Komik
Ja, Komik ist ein wunderbares Stilmittel, Humor lockert eine Geschichte wunderbar auf. Und teilweise (in 1 von 10 Fällen) ist das hier auch gelungen. Aber dann kommen solche Aussagen und Sätze wie:
- Ein ultraböser Dämon namens Falafel
- Verzweifelt gesuchte Koseworte wie "scharfe Mieze"
- "[...]heilige, extra starke WC-Ente!"
- "Er blickte mich an, als bestünde ich plötzlich aus Kartoffelpüree.",
die den Leser - oder zumindest mich - verwundert und ein wenig (ziemlich) genervt zurücklassen.

5. Die Lovestory, die keine ist
Ronnie trifft Ian, verliebt sich in ihn. Ian trifft Ronnie, verliebt sich in sie. Viel Erotik, viel Sex, beides ziemlich schlecht dargestellt. Das alles in etwa 3 Tagen geschehen. Man spricht von Heirat. Ende.
Wenn das die Schmetterlinge in meinem Bauch anregen soll, ist gehörig was schief gelaufen, schliesslich hat es sie in Tiefschlaf versetzt, mehr nicht...

6. Die Dialoge
Zu Beginn fand ich sie erfrischend, teilweise auch sehr unterhaltsam. Aber dann - und weil sie einfach nicht weniger wurden - fand ich sie nur noch anödend. Jap. Anödend! Kein Protagonist hat jemals so viel gesprochen, wie Ronnie! Egal ob beim Sex, beim Kämpfen, oder bei persönlichen ernsten Gesprächen. Ronnie quasselt und quasselt. Und die Welt quasselt mit ihr mit. So werden in ihrer Gegenwart auch ganz böse Dämonen plötzlich zu ultra-gesprächigen Gefährten und anstatt anzugreifen, quatschen sie einfach mit Ronnie über Gott und die Welt. Ja ne, is klar.

Fazit
Für einen gewissen Unterhaltungswert und gelegentlich geglückte Komik vergebe ich ein paar wenige Punkte, ebenso wie für die eigentlich tolle Grundidee. Leider ist die Umsetzung alles andere als gelungen. Das Buch ist und bleibt bis zum schluss oberflächlich, unnötig und erzwungen lustig, voller schräger aber nicht wirklich guter Dialoge und ohne jegliche Gefühle. Für mich doch eher ein: Kann man lesen, muss man aber definitiv nicht!

An sich habe ich mich gefragt was ich da gelesen habe.
Der Klappentext hörte sich noch vielversprechend an. Normalsterbliche wird plötzlich zu einer Drachenjägerin und ihre Welt wird auf den Kopf gestellt. Und ihr steht per Zufall ein sexy Drachenjäger zur Seite.
Tja das war es dann aber auch schon irgendwie.
Der Schreibstil konnte mich diesmal so gar nicht packen, zumal mir die Handlung Konfus vorkam, mit sprunghaften Charakteren.
Die Welt der Drachen und was da noch zugehört, ist mir bis zu Letzt fremd geblieben. Ich fand die Geschichte chaotisch und ohne roten Faden.
An sich hat man versucht mit Veronica mal einen Charakter zu erschaffen, der von der Norm abweicht mit ihrer Keimphobie. Doch die spielt eigentlich nur am Anfang eher eine Rolle, kaum ist sie Drachenjägerin schon ist man nicht mehr in Panik mit fremden Keimen in Kontakt zu kommen. Verwüstet Wohnung ist dadurch natürlich easy zu ertragen.
Ian hätte interessant sein können aber dieser ist für mich total farblos geblieben, dabei hätte man hier so einiges raus holen können.
Die Liebesszene zwischen den beiden fand ich eher creepy, um es noch positiv zu bewerten. Gefühle sind Null für mich da gewesen, da ist kein Funke bei mir übergesprungen. Alles war Emotionslos, ich weiß gar nicht auf welche Grundlage die beiden sich verliebt haben.
Die Nebencharaktere sind da noch spezieller und waren von ihren Handlungen noch unlogischer.
Die Dialoge waren für mich streckenweise unterirdisch und teils gar nicht nachvollziehbar, was aber auch auf viele Situationen im Buch zu traf. Schlechte Komödie traf es an manchen Stellen ganz gut.
Ich mag es schon wenn mal Geschichten einen überraschen weil man mal was unerwartet liest. Aber diese Handlung hier hat den Vogel echt abgeschossen.
Ich weiß weder was sich die Autorin hier gedacht noch wie ehrlich gesagt die Geschichte in der Form überhaupt in den Verlag geschafft hat. Als Übersetzer oder Lektorat hätte ich wohl Schmerzensgeld angefordert.
Ich kann der Geschichte leider echt nichts positives abgewinnen außer dass sich das Setting gut angehört hatte.
Wenn ich es schon richtig gesehen habe, hat der zweite Band besser abgeschnitten, aber meine Erwartungen werde ich mal runterschrauben.
Bei diesen Band weiß ich leider nicht was sich man da gedacht hat.

Estranged from her half-sister, Ronnie is met with a startling realization about the world she lives in. On par for every Kati Mac book, Ronnie is hilarious, particularly in her way of thinking and awkward honesty. Her best friend and self-appointed sidekick Teresita is rib-crackling funny. While Memoirs may be an action packed romance, there's definitely no shortage of comic relief between the demon fights and Ronnie learning her new skills form Ian. And who doesn't want a sexy teacher like Ian Iskander. Half demon, half dragon, allllll male. Ian is charming and caring not only for Ronnie but for Sasha, a charge and apprentice in his care.

Ronnie and Ian soon learn that the mission her sister gave her and Ian's lead to the same direction. A woman and her two daughters aren't all they seem, and Ian's mission has a darker tone than Ronnie thought. Deception and magic turn this twisting fantasy mystery into a who-dun-it with an unexpected quirky romance on top. Definitely a fun new addition to the Katie Mac fantasy realm!

Memoirs of a Dragon Hunter by Katie MacAlister is the first book in the Dragon Hunter series. As with a lot of first books in a series, there is a bit of set up and paranormal world build up required which can be a wee bit tedious.

Katie MacAlister does not fail with her readers in setting up a descriptive scenes. Unlike every other writer out there, Ms. MacAlister's writing continues to be superbly edited and immaculately written. There is some humor, but not as many as you expect. The characters are the reason why I couldn't give the book five stars. I wan't able to bond with Ian, (Iskander), the hero. He was vague. Yes, he had many layers and secrets, I just didn't care to delve into his layers or his secrets. The heroine, Ronnie, (Veronica), seems to suffer from obsessive–compulsive disorder, (OCD). At first, Ronnie's OCD-ness is on the same extreme level of television detective Tony Shaloub's "Monk". The problem? Ronnie's OCD-ness seems to 'go away' quickly, not gradually. For example, there is a part of the book where Ronnie's apartment is ransacked. In order to get away from the mess, Ronnie stays at Ian's apartment. When someone has serious OCD issues, (as Ronnie has), she wouldn't be able to have her mind on anything else knowing there was a mess just one floor down that needed a super cleaning. Also, the love connection between the Ian and Ronnie was kind of meh. Not the usual steamy love making found in Ms. MacAlister's Dragon series, Dark One's series, and her contemporary novels. I will say, Teresita, ahem...(not me), she was funny! But Ian's 'assistant', a Sprite named Sasha was a bit blurry. I really couldn't figure her out. Just like with the H/h, I didn't really want to figure her out.

Katie MacAlister is still one of my favorite authors, she just sort of missed the mark with this book. That's why I can say, I will give the Dragon Hunter series another chance with the next release, Day of the Dragon, due out in March, 2019.

If you've ever listened to an audiobook, you know that a narrator can make or break the experience for you. Their tone, accent, inflection, etc. truly impacts the story and can either complement it nicely or take away from it. I wasn't expecting much of this Chirp audio deal given the nature of the plot, but man the audio did me dirty on this one.

Veronica isn't close to her half sister but when the latter is getting ready to pass on, she beckons Veronica to tell her that she's passing on her dragon hunting ability and her sword. Now, the anxiety laced, hand sanitizer overusing Veronica has to carry out the mission her sister passed on to her, after she takes at least three showers. She ultimately meets her new neighbor Ian while she's cloaked in dragon blood and learns he's a dragon hunter demon combo platter as well. Like calls to like and all that. Now the two unite so they can achieve their own missions.

I can't stress enough how annoying the narrator made the main character Veronica sound. I mean, she was annoying anyway just based on her personality, but the somewhat valley girl, whiny thing she had happening here made me cringe. A lot. The same accent without the whine was given to the character of Sasha, also terrible. All that said, the story still lost me early on. It was over the top and irritating. Also, these were the least sexy romantic scenes I have literally ever read.

A big thank you to NetGalley and Forever/Grand Central Publishing for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. I haven't read a book by this author in quite a while. This is the first in a new series I believe. I enjoyed the book, but I sometimes was as confused as Veronica. The world is not defined very well-what exactly is a Dragon Hunter? They don't hunt dragons??! I liked Veronica (Ronnie) and her friend Teresita. I found them refreshing, sometimes childlike but still great fun. Ronnie is a germaphobe whose 1\2 sister literally dies in her arms. Her sister gives her a task and a bite before she dies....This begins the quest. To me this felt like a concluding book as Ian finds love with Veronica. It's a quick read with very.silly chapter headings. Not sure why but it didn't detract to much. I think that many paranormal romance readers will enjoy. It can make you laugh and is quite tongue in check. It's not a serious book just a fun read. I give it a 3.5.

I really, really, really wanted to like/love this. I'm a huge fan of Katie's Dragon Sept books, especially May and Gabriel. The Silver Dragons are my jam, a reread when I need a paranormal fix.

So I'm a bit disappointed that Ian and Ronnie didn't tickle my fancy. In fact, I was quite bored, waiting for things to pick up, witty banter, teasing/flirting, chemistry to blossom, etc. I was waiting for ANYTHING that would capture my attention. Unfortunately, that never came for me, or other reviewers, it seems. I found myself setting this book aside multiple times.

On top of that, Ronnie was not a likable character. Her quirks were not endearing. They were over the top. Freakishly over the top. And as other reviews stated, Ronnie was more teenage like than adult. I had to remind myself often that she was a grown woman.

I ended this book thinking it was me, but after reading other reviews I realize it wasn't.

If you're looking for a Katie book to read, I would suggest starting with her Dragon Sept books.

Everytime I read her stories, I get completely swept up in the worlds she creates and I always have so much fun reading them! I always jump on the chance to read her stories and she never disappoints. This book was no different. I laughed out loud and was on the edge of my seat reading this story and I can't wait to read more!

I’d read several books from Katie MacAlister’s Dark Ones series quite a while back and thought they were hilarious, and since I was in the mood for a quirky paranormal, I figured I’d pick up the first book in a new series by her. Either my memory is faulty or my sense of humor has changed drastically, because there wasn’t much about this book that I liked.

“I am a dragon hunter,” I told her with great dignity. “We are not woo-woo.”

Much of the plot was a confusing mess. One item, for example – dragon hunters don’t actually hunt dragons, but demons, and they’re called that because they’re actually part demon and part dragon, with the dragon bit keeping the dark-leaning demon side in check. Why or how they’re this way, I don’t know. It didn’t help that the book switched from Ronnie’s first-person POV to Ian’s third person POV frequently. Ronnie has OCD, which I thought was well done for, oh, the first two chapters, and then was promptly forgotten unless it was dragged back out for comic relief or as an example of how Ian’s mere presence “fixed” her. There’s also an annoying running gag about her writing a book about her experiences and whether her creative writing teacher would approve of various chapter titles, dialogue, the believability of various plot points… it just felt like it was trying much too hard to be funny. This is the kind of book that has a wrath demon named Falafel, which sounds delightfully quirky on the surface but just got a bit old when they were trying to have serious conversations about, you know, the fate of the world and all that. It felt, at times, like it was trying very hard to balance between being off the walls quirky and “oh no the world is doomed” and it just didn’t do either well.

“[W]hat’s the good in being a dragon hunter if you can’t cover people in dragon fire and roast them alive?”

While I enjoyed the first few chapters, the book started falling apart once Ronnie met Ian, and the instalust and subsequent instalove really turned me off. I didn’t particularly like or sympathize with either character, and I found their relationship ridiculously unbelievable and unsexy. I forced myself to read the last 25% in the hopes of clearing up the confusing plot points, but while some things became clearer, it didn’t really help the story as a whole. Overall, this was just not my cup of tea at all.

Based on the description of MEMOIRS OF A DRAGON HUNTER, and what I know of Katie MacAlister's books, I was expecting a slightly goofy, fun paranormal romance. And honestly, MEMOIRS OF A DRAGON HUNTER is certainly goofy, but not in a good way. It has a convoluted plot, characters with minimal chemistry, and some very bad dialogue.

First of all, our main character Veronica, also known as Ronnie. Her internal monologue was the worst. I understand that she is being thrown into a world and situation she has no knowledge of, but she frequently sounds immature and clueless. Also, she has OCD, and while I've read books with nuanced portrayals of characters with mental illnesses such as OCD, this was not one of them. It's not consistent, and frequently feels like it's there for the humor (like when she's reminding herself to bring hand sanitizer in her "dragon hunter kit") and then disappears in other situations (like when she stays overnight with Ian).

The other characters aren't much better - I couldn't get behind Ian as a hero, he seemed a bit too melodramatic and one-dimensional (we learned barely anything about his history, for example). And the side characters were not very memorable other than a few stereotypical adjectives. There was quirky, animal loving Sasha and sassy sidekick Teresita - neither added a ton to the story.

Then there's the plot. I am still a bit confused as to what exactly happened in this book. I grasped the basic concept (Ronnie and Ian ended up together) but it felt like it couldn't decide if it was a paranormal romance or urban fantasy. The bad guys make no sense and seemingly come out of nowhere in the middle of the book, and the ending was a bit anticlimactic. Plus, the reasons that Ian and Ronnie couldn't end up together felt super contrived and ridiculous - I feel like the point of a romance is for the protagonists to overcome some obstacle and end up happily ever after, and that didn't really feel like it happened here.

All in all, I think this book would have been better if it hadn't even been a romance. I'm curious about the bits of world building that did happen, and I would be really interested in learning more with a different set of characters. I will likely give the Dragon Hunter series another try, but I would advise skipping this one.

DNF bei 52 Seiten. Entschuldigung, aber was ist denn das bitte? Welcher Lektor hat das durchgehen lassen? Ich weiß nicht, ob das Original so schlecht geschrieben ist oder der Übersetzer hier einen Totalausfall hatte. Ständig seltsame Satzkonstruktionen und Wortwiederholungen; redundante Formulierungen, durch die 3 Sätze eigentlich dasselbe aussagen. Zwei Kostproben, die mich schaudern lassen:

"Er schlug hart auf dem Boden auf und landete flach auf dem Gesicht. Einzig sein Kinn konnte den Aufprall abmildern."

"[...] und drückte meinen Arm gegen ihren Bauch. Er war warm, nass und schrecklich [...]. Ich musste mich waschen, jetzt gleich. Mich am ganzen Körper waschen. Ich bezweifelte, dass es genug Wasser gab, so groß war mein Verlangen, mich zu säubern."

Fast jeder Satz stößt mir hier irgendwie sauer auf. Das mag der Deutschlehrer in mir sein, aber das geht einfach gar nicht.
Die Protagonistin hat scheinbar überhaupt keinen Charakter und wird nur durch ihre Zwangsstörung bestimmt. Selbst in einer Situation, in der ihre Halbschwester lebensgefährlich verletzt am Boden liegt, kann sie nur an Hygiene denken, statt ihr zu helfen und Mitgefühl zu zeigen. Wie unglaubwürdig und kaltschnäuzig ist das denn? Dazu versuchen die Dialoge und inneren Monologe witzig zu sein, sind aber einfach nur peinlich, wenn einem an unpassenden Stellen zusammenhangslose Spitzen hingeworfen werden. Wirklich zum Gruseln.

I loved all of books in Katie MacAlister's Dragon series, but this is my favorite! It was so funny.

Veronica is a new Dragon Hunter and she didn't know what to expect or what to do. I love that she kept bringing up her OCD and the animal inside her head. She felt that she needed to control them. Funny, but when she was protecting innocents, her animal was quiet and it allowed her to do what she needed to do.

I laughed when she asked Ian to wash his hands and wash the vegetables , before he served them, to her. The scene in the bedroom, where they first make love, was so funny, that I couldn't stop laughing. Veronica was funny even though she doesn't try to be.

If you're a fan of Katie MacAlister's Dragon books or of humorous romances I highly recommend this book.

Hier sieht man einfach nur einen heißen Typen, dessen Äußeres dafür gebraucht wird, Frauen zum Kauf zu verleiten, ohne dass es einen Bezug zum Inhalt des Buches hat.

Rezension:

Zu Beginn muss ich sagen, ich bin froh dieses Buch hinter mich gebracht zu haben. Denn ich war einfach von 90% dieses Buches nur genervt.

Ronnie, kurz für Veronica, wirkte im gesamten Buch nicht wie eine erwachsene junge Frau, eher wie ein pupertierender Teenie, der die Auffassungsgabe eines Kleinkindes hat. Hinzu kommen ihre Zwangsstörungen, dass immer alles an seinem Platz und sauber zu sein muss, die sie liebevoll als ihr „Angsttierchen“ bezeichnet. Was ich ja schon ganz süß fand. Aber das ständige Wiederholen, dass dieses Tierchen da irgendwo in ihrem Kopf sitzt, war zum Augen verrollen. Es hat mich auch wahnsinnig gemacht, dass sie bei wichtigen Themen, die sie selbst angeschnitten hat, stets und ständig vom Thema abgelenkt hat. So kann man ein Buch ebenfalls in die Länge ziehen.

Ian, der andere Protagonist, ist schwer zu beschreiben, da er für mich sehr unnahbar wirkte, und das bis zum Schluss. Ich konnte mich schwer mit ihm anfreunden. Mir gefiel auch nicht, dass er Ronnie immer nur Häppchen an Infos, über die sie bescheid wissen sollte, quasi vor die Füße geworfen hat. Als erfahrener Drachenjäger hätte ich mir mehr Engagement von seiner Seite gewünscht, dass er Ronnie ausbildet. Es wurde darüber geschrieben, dass sie wohl etwas von ihm gelernt hat, aber was genau das war, blieb unklar. Dann ist die Erwähnung auch absolut irrelevant. Denn im Kampf konnte sie sich meines Erachtens nicht wirklich beweisen, es war wohl alles eher dem Glück oder dem Zufall geschuldet.

Man wird zu Beginn des Buches sehr schnell in die Handlung geworfen. Etwas gefühlskalt finde ich Ronnie’s Art, nach dem Tod ihrer Schwester. Denn sie schafft es direkt nicht, sich an Ihr Versprechen gegenüber Helen zu halten. Ich kann verstehen, dass sie verwirrt ist, nach all den Infos über magische Wesen, wie Drachen, Dämonen und Geistern. Aber mir hat hier wirklich der Schmerz des Verlustes gefehlt.

Nach der Einführung durch das erste Kapitel wurde es verwirrend. Man wurde irgendwie so schnell durch den Plot geschoben, dass man nicht mehr hinterher kam alles für sich zusammenzustellen. Kampfszenen jeglicher Art, die mehr durch Ian vollzogen wurden, wirkten unreal und Ronnie hat ihre Gegner einfach nur tot gequatscht. Man, die Frau hat nur geredet. Stets und ständig. Und ich weiß nicht, warum sie die Notwendigkeit gesehen hat, sich und ihre Art dauernd zu erklären. Ich war noch vor der Hälfte des Buches davor abzubrechen. Am Liebsten hätte ich Ronnie, und teilweise auch Ian, gerne mal kräftig geschüttelt.

Völlig unverständlich für mich war jede Handlung in Richtung Ende, ab dem Punkt, dass Ronnie ihre Wohnung verwüstet vorfand und man ihr das Schwert ihrer Schwester gestohlen hatte. Anstatt den Dieb zu finden, wird erstmal zu Abend gegessen. Total verdreht.

Und wieso sind Ian und Ronnie Drachenjäger, wenn sie doch eigentlich die „Sterblichen“ vor Dämonen beschützen sollen? Die Wortwahl ist mir völlig fern. Aber wären Drachen als Dämonenjäger nicht besser gewesen? Und wo sind die Drachen? Und wenn speien sie nicht Feuer, anstatt es zu atmen? Das Buch hat mich verwirrt zurückgelassen. Selbst jetzt nach 2 Tagen des Verarbeitens kommen immer noch Fragen über Fragen auf.

Es hat mich auch eine ganze Weile gebraucht zu realisieren, dass Ronnie, die teilweise als Ich-Erzählerin auftritt, offensichtlich das Buch geschrieben hat. Klar ist es mir erst durch den Originaltitel „Memoir of a Dragon Hunter“ geworden. Ich hatte mich schon über die absolut sinnfreien Kapitelüberschriften gewundert. Ich wollte mir immer wieder an den Kopf greifen, wahrscheinlich hab ich es auch getan.

Entschuldigt, aber ich kann an diesem Buch einfach kein gutes Haar lassen. Und um so mehr ich darüber nachdenke, um so mehr Ungereimtheiten und Fragen kommen auf. Ich sollte wirklich damit abschließen.

Fazit:

Dies war mein erstes Buch von Katie MacAlister und ich werde nicht ein weiteres von ihr lesen. Ich hatte einige auf meiner Wunschliste, aber mit diesem Buch hat sie mir die Lust auf mehr von ihr völlig genommen. Ihr Art von Humor, wirkte schwer und aufgesetzt. Aber lustig war es nicht!

Not gonna lie, I love hot dragon shifter romance. A girl just needs to make sure she has a few necessities by her bed, like a fire extinguisher or a bucket of water to put out the flames before they burn down the house. I really wish I could say this was used while reading this book, but sadly it was not. I have read this author several times in the past, in fact this was one of the authors that got me really hooked on the romance genre. I have always found her books to be funny, romantic, and engaging so when I saw this new series in her dragon shifter romance, I was excited about it. To my shock, this book was very hard to get through, and sadly this was mainly due to characterization, particularly the secondary characters.

Our story starts off with our hero Ian sacrificing himself to be bound by a demon lord for a friend desperately trying to find a way to remove the dragon hunters darker demon side. This sadly only saves his friend for a few short years and ties him to a female demon lord with a nasty mean streak and an ego the size of a planet. Ian is a brooding tough male character that was very interesting to me. His inner dialogue reminded me of a man who has been tortured far too long and is tired of all the hell he has seen, yet when he sees a person in need, whether it’s a friend or not, he jumps in to help however he can.

Our heroine, Veronica, has a bad case of OCD, so when her half sister calls her asking her to come to an abandoned shopping mall to talk, Veronica has a small melt down. Her half sister, Helen, insists it’s a matter of life and death, so Veronica gets over her anxiety and goes to see how she can help. What she doesn’t expect to find is her sister with a huge hole in the middle of her and about to die. The whole finding out her half sister is a dragon hunter because of their not shared parent and then turning her into a dragon hunter comes as a bit of a surprise as well.

I loved that Veronica has OCD to the extent she does. We are so used to seeing main characters that have some life problems or major issues from their past but are otherwise strong and health, so seeing a character with a well displayed disorder is amazing. The OCD is very well done in this book and really adds credit to Veronica’s character.

With that said, that is where the enjoyment of the characters stops. The secondary characters in this book, namely Veronica’s best friend Teresita, and Ian’s friend/charge, Sasha, are both so prominent they become weird main characters. While this isn’t enough to take a lot of value away from a book for me, the personalities of both characters were. I found both characters annoying in the way they act and talk. Now Sasha is not human so this was understandable, however Teresita was just anger inducing. When she finds out about what has happened between Veronica and her sister she doesn’t show remorse, she doesn’t show worry for Veronica, nor is she even there for her; Instead, she gets stuck on the paranormal aspect and thinks how she and Veronica will benefit from it. She asks what super powers she has and gets disappointed that Veronica doesn’t just know how to use her new powers. Then, when they are on their way back to where Veronica’s sister died in Veronica’s arms not even a full twenty four hours later, Teresita can only talk about how this whole thing will make them famous and what the movie about them will be like when it finally gets made. To top it off, when she sees Veronica in her first fight, instead of worrying her best friend could get hurt or killed she shoves Veronica into the battle and gets upset she not better at it. While I get this was probably for comedy it really put me off of the book.

The hotter scenes in this story are also filled with tense moments and strange demands and conversations. This was very true to a person with OCD but wasn’t my cup of tea. Honestly, it has never taken me this long to get through a book before, but I kept having to put it down because of how upset I got at the secondary characters

Overall:
The secondary characters in this story made me very upset and caused the book to be hard to get through. While this book does a good job of displaying OCD in a character and setting up a good story, at the end of the day, it wasn’t my cup of tea.

Would I Recommend It:
I always hate doing this, but I have to say no I would not on this one.

Meine Meinung

Dies war mein erstes Buch von Katie MacAlister. Ich hab es durch Zufall bei einer Leserunde entdeckt und gesehen, dass die Autorin noch mehr Bücher in diese Richtung veröffentlicht hat und dachte mir, wenn mir dieses gefällt kann man ja mal mehr von ihr lesen.

In der Geschichte geht es um Ronnie, die so alles andere als perfekt ist. Sie hat eine Angststörung und fürchterliche Panik vor Schmutz und Bakterien. Weswegen es mit ihr nicht immer einfach ist.
Ihre Halbschwester möchte sich ganz überraschend mit ihr treffen und als sie zu dieser kommt ist diese tödlich verletzt. Sie erzählt ihr, dass es in der Welt magische Wesen gibt und das Ronnie ihre Aufgabe zu ende führen muss. Sie beisst sie und vermacht ihr so ihr Erbe. Aber zum Glück ist Ronnie nicht alleine, quasi nebenan zieht nämlich der äußerst attraktive Ian ein, der ganz zufällig ein Halbdämon ist. Die beiden finden eine Vereinbarung sich gegenseitig zu helfen.

Das Konzept klingt eigentlich echt super. Genau auf sowas hab ich mich auch gefreut.
Das ganze ist so aufgebaut, dass Ronnie einen Schreibkurs besucht und das Buch quasi ihre Schreibaufgabe ist. Leider liest sich das Buch auch so.
Die Überschriften versuchen Witzig zu sein, sind aber einfach nur zu lang und verwirrend.

Man steigt am Anfang mitten in der Story an, es wird mit Fachbegriffen um sich geworfen, es kommt zu einem Kampf. Danach geht die eigentliche Geschichte los, in diese Startet man nach diesem Anfang einfach nur verwirrt.
Ich hab tatsächlich einige Seiten gebraucht, weil mich dieser Start in das Buch so sehr verwirrt hat. Musste sogar nachsehen, ob dies wirklich ein erster Teil ist.

Eigentlich war ich überzeugt das Ronnie mir sympathisch sein wird, aber ganz ehrlich, ich fand sie nur nervig. Sie war nur am reden, stellte wie ein Kleinkind tausend Fragen auf einmal, musste ständig in den unpassendsten Momenten ausführliche Erklärungen für ihr Verhalten an den Tag legen. Eigentlich war sie nicht sonderlich ausgearbeitet. Sie quasselte und quasselte sinnlos daher und verwickelte sogar ihre Gegner in anstrengende und langwierige Gespräche.

Ian leider genauso. Kaum hatte er Ronnie gesehen, ging in seinem Kopf so gar nichts mehr. Aus dem selbstbewussten, starken Halbdämon wurde ein sabbernder Teenager. Es drehte sich ausschließlich um Ronnie, wodurch Ian selber total zu kurz kam.

Allgemein kamen in dem Buch super viele Fragen auf, von denen kaum eine beantwortet wurde.
Im Vordergrund steht eigentlich die Beziehung zwischen Ian und Ronnie, während die eigentliche Handlung total im Hintergrund spielt.

Die Kapitel waren meistens aus Ronnies Sicht geschrieben, aber es gab auch ein paar aus Ians Sicht. Eigentlich liebe ich diese Aufteilung, weil man so beide Seiten gut kennenlernen kann, aber leider wurde aus total verschiedenen Perspektiven geschrieben. Ronnies Part wurde in der Ich- Perspektive geschrieben, während Ians Parts aus der dritten- Perspektive waren. Das störte den Lesefluss und verwirrte zusätzlich.

Allgemein konnte ich keinen richtigen roten Faden erkenne, es gab einige Logikfehler, einiges wurde erst gar nicht aufgeklärt.
Es wurde einfach mit zu vielen Begriffen um sich geworfen, die aber nie wirklich erklärt wurden. Man wusste nicht woher diese Leute kommen, ob sie gut oder böse sind, was für eine Rolle sie für die Geschichte spielen. Es gab auch Charaktere die Anfangs auftauchen, aber dann plötzlich verschwinden und nie wieder erwähnt werden. Es gab auch Figuren, die ständig namentlich erwähnt wurden, aber selber keinen Auftritt in dem Buch hatten.

Nicht einmal die Liebesgeschichte kann überzeugen. Es war die totale insta Love, man ging gleich auf Tuchfühlung und nach drei Tagen sprach man schon von Heirat … Zeit für Schmetterlinge oder Spannung war da nicht.
Allgemein war von dem Spannungsbogen keine Sicht. Die Ereignisse reihten sich ohne Sinn und Verstand aneinander. Oftmals fehlte der Zusammenhang.

Fazit

Dieses Buch hat eine interessante Grundidee, aber leider ist es furchtbar schlecht umgesetzt.
Charaktere ohne Tiefgang, ständiges peinliches geplapper, zu viele offene Fragen, keinerlei Richtungsweisung.
Ein Buch das man als einfach zu lesen, betiteln kann. Leider mein letztes Buch von Katie MacAlister. 1/5
