Still Believing: A Modern Day Retelling of Persuasion by Jane Austen

Rate this book
Still Believing is a clean, wholesome romance.

They say second time’s the charm.  Can the same be said for love?

Ashley Everly ruined her first chance at love with Finn Weston when she refused his proposal.  Heartbroken, he left her to join the Navy.

Now, ten years later, the boldly handsome SEAL walks back into her life, and everything she felt for him is still there.  When circumstances change, Ashley finds Finn back in her life and realizes her feelings are unchanged; should she turn away or towards the one man who has the power to bring her to her knees.

Being a SEAL taught Finn to take risks, but when he sees Ashley, he wonders if a second chance at love with her now is worth the risk of losing his heart.

It is a modern tale of love ‘coming around again’ when you least expect it and the heart’s never-ending desire to take a chance.

A Modern Persuasion inspired book

I had gifted this book to my dearest friend and wanted to discuss it with her. Persuasion is a favorite of many Austen fans and it was nice to see a modern retelling. This book does not follow canon to a T which I enjoyed. It did need some editing in areas like making sure the word Navy, when referring to the military branch, was always capitalized. There are certain military wedding traditions that would have added some unique touches like for example the indoor arch ceremony with the sabers would have been nice to see. Maybe the bride being welcomed to the Navy with a swat of the sabers at the end of arch. Perhaps seeing what happened while the hero and heroine were apart once they started reconnecting would have given some insight. These wonderfully beloved characters needed more well developed supporting characters in this retelling. It was an enjoyable read and I liked it. I do hope that this author decides to write other Austen inspired stories with a bit more attention to detail like the ones mentioned above.
