When a local minister and his wife are found dead, it sets in motion a swirling chain of events that pulls Kelly Sage into the center of a family in turmoil, and Cole is left out of the loop.
Regulations, prejudice, and apathy have left Native American Veteran, Michael Blackbear, alone and longing for his wife and child in Iraq. A chance meeting with Cole may get him the help he needs to cut through all the red tape and reunite his family.
But, desperate people do foolish things and the wheels of bureaucracy turn slowly. A human trafficker has a plan, but at what price? It seems it may be the only option left. Will Blackbear’s desperation send him down a path the warrior is ill-equipped to return from?
Murder, robbery, embezzlement, jealousy, resentment, Indian unrest, cast a long shadow over Orvin, Oklahoma, and the thin veneer covering centuries of hate begins to crack.

This book has a lot going on. A beloved preacher and his wife are found dead. Murder or suicide? A Cheyenne Indian is trying to bring his wife and son to America after he spent two tours in Iraq. He gets accused of murdering the preacher..he didn't do it. Cole gets him out of jail. The two daughters of the preacher are at odds over keeping his Center open. It is helping the local Cheyenne children have a safe place. The parents are split on whether the Center is good for the children or is just brainwashing them into leaving their culture. There are lots of sub plots, all of which get tied up a the end. The book leaves you wondering if Cole and Kelly are going to leave Orvin. Guess Book 10 will tell us the next chapter.
Who would think, there would be a crime wave in Ovid, OK, where Cole and Kelly have lived for the last couple years. And yet here it was. The reverend and his wife are murdered. Michael Blackbear is arrested, mostly because he is an Indian, but also because the police found some letters he had written to the reverend. Michael was also an Iraqi vet, who got married and had a son while he was deployed. Now he desperately wants to bring them to the states, but nobody seems to want to help. Except Cole, of course. Someone is robbing jewelry stores and it comes as a complete shocker, who killed the reverend and why
heartbreaking look at the failure of government on multiple levels
With Cole’s trademark benchmark moral compass, he attempts to rectify a bureaucratic morass for a Native American combat veteran, while pondering the murder of a beloved pastor and his wife, mainstays of a center dedicated to providing aid to the tribal residents around Orvin.
I have enjoyed the Cole Sage series from book one. #9 is no exception! Mr. Maxwell is a wonderful writer. I can't tell you which one I have enjoyed the most, maybe this one. Can't wait for #10 !!
Thank you Mr. Maxwell for another Cole Sage Mystery! Like all the past ones they were fast paced and wonderfully written. You have proved time And time again that you can write great books without all the profanity.
This is one of those books where it seems like the names were changed then their story was told. Sadly, this whole story could be true. Hopefully it's not.
This really was a soul-searching kind of story. Cole Sage is a likeable character with a need to help those he can. This one is rather sad, but good. I rate it 5 stars.
